The Who - Selected Quadrophenia Demo's.

Image
This is a selection of demo's that in part eventually led to The Who recording one of their most popular and enduring albums namely Quadrophenia. Quadrophenia was recorded at Ramport, The Who’s own studio in Battersea, south London in May and June of 1973, and these demo's are predominately the very early stages of the process including Pete Townsend performing his work to the rest of the band. The album, The Who's second 'rock opera' was released to coincide with The Who’s first UK and US tours for two years, it reached number 2 in both countries’ album charts. It was immaculately packaged in a handsome black and white gatefold sleeve, complete with extensive liner notes outlining the story and a 22-page book of evocative black and white photographs illustrating the central character Jimmy’s personal odyssey. 2010FM - February Magazine SXSW Previews

Image
With SXSW just a month away there is no shortage of bands and artists looking to get noticed at the moment ! The Butterfly Explosion are a band from Ireland that blend powerful spiraling music with delicate vocals to form rich soundscapes of beautiful melodies, gliding between moments of ethereal dreampop and explosive sonic bliss. Well so says their promo and I have to agree they really are a breath of fresh air, and I hope get to be heard far and wide, they deserve it. When UK webzine Drowned In Sound had a week of articles in April 2009 dedicated to the revival and diverse influence of the early 90s shoegaze scene, Butterfly Explosion were amongst the international artists highlighted as ones to watch. Recording on the debut album Lost Trails began late 2008 with producer Torsten Kinsella (God Is An Astronaut) and is released March 1st 2010 through Revive Records. 'Closer', the first single, has been receiving extensive airplay from Ireland's leading alternative music s

Here in the UK synth-laden electro rockers Viva City have been gaining some well earned attention and will be bringing their razor-sharp mix of catchy and gritty electro rock across the pond to the States with a number of US dates, culminating with an appearance at SXSW. Viva City, whose signature sound is most reminiscent of a swirling mix of Depeche Mode and Prodigy, have shared the stage with the likes of Friendly Fires, Ladyhawk, Maximo Park and have collaborated with dance-house phenom Don Diablo on the banger “Audio Endlessly”. Their music has been applauded by UK critics and has garnered them extensive airplay on BBC and XFM Radio in the UK. The BBC's Radio 6 Music proclaims the songs are “a slice of classic electropop and sheer genius;” and Time Out Magazine declares their sound as “souped-up synth stabbing electro rock.” Listen: 'Lasers' Website: MySpace Purchase: (MP3's) Viva City There second single “Have You Ever Felt So Messed Up?” will be released in t

Fleetwood Mac - Tour Rehearsal 1979

Image
This is part of a series of tour rehearsals undertaken by Fleetwood Mac over three days on a sound stage in Los Angeles. The rehearsals took place from the 18th to 20th October 1979, and there was an audience in attendance for the 'warm up' performance made up of friends and family. The rehearsals were filmed using a single camera video shot except on the 19th October where multi camera material exists. DVD boots of the rehearsals are in circulation, the sound quality on some is not to good and picture quality even worse. This is audio only from one of the sessions and is a whole lot better quality. We start our second new music round up with SAADI whose promotional biography tell us & I quote ' As precious stone is extracted fr om its natural environment to be cut and polished, revealing its infinite multi-colored reflections, SAADI derives elements of musical influence and transforms them into pop gems rich in melody and reflecting an almost schizophrenic obsession with music. SAADI, the musical pseudonym of the radiant Boshra al Saadi, is an eclectic and transcendental artist with a unique ability to create harmonious tunes tiled from fragmentation's of both empathetic influence and detached curiosity. Drawing early influence from sources as diverse as Bob Dylan, classic 80's synth pop, traditional Arabic music, punk rock, Nigerian music and Brian Eno, SAA DI assembles her musical creation to form what is fundamentally her own. This collision of pop-smarts, exotic influences and fearless eclecticism spawns music which sounds both sophisticated and delightfully

XTC - Live In Belgium 1982.

This is a show from the final XTC tour (this concert was broadcast on FM radio), from a gig at L'Ancienne Belgique, Brussels, Belgium, back on the 7th March 1982. The last major hit of XTC's touring phase was "Senses Working Overtime," the first single from their double album English Settlement and a top 10 hit in 1982. At the peak of their popularity, the band embarked on a major tour, but Andy Partridge suffered a mental breakdown on stage during one of the first concerts of the tour in Paris on March 18th, 1982. The European and British dates were cancelled and after completing only one show in San Diego the whole US leg was also abandoned. Source: FM Broadcast. Sound Quality: Very good stereo mp3@320kbps. Bad Company - Electric Ladyland 1992

Image
In 1986 Mick Ralphs and Simon Kirke decided to re team for a new project. Their label, Atlantic Records , however, insisted they resume the Bad Company name. But Paul Rodgers was already engaged with a new super group called The Firm. So the remaining two members hired ex-Ted Nugent vocalist Brian Howe as the new lead singer, Steven Price as the new bass player and Greg Dechert (ex-Uriah Heep) on keyboards. Brian Howe's vocal style brought more of a pop-rock sound to the band, as opposed to Paul Rodgers' more bluesy style. Over a six -year span from 1986 to 1992, this version of the band released four albums including Fame and Fortune, Dangerous Age, the platinum selling Holy Water and Here Comes Trouble. The final studio album of the Brian Howe era, 1992's Here Comes Trouble , featured the Top 40 hit 'How About That', and 'This Could Be The One' (number 87). The album went Gold but the formula was growing stale. Before touring in support of Here Come

2010FM - February Magazine One

I was not sure quite what to make of Peasant (Damien DeRose) when I was first sent a song of his last year, for whatever reason something was missing for me, and however much this site is about supporting new artists and music, liking what you hear has to be a key part of any endorsement. OK so you have guessed what happened next, but I will state it anyway, was I surprised and delighted when I received a copy of his forthcoming album! His record companies promo actually states "While the last album gave many people their first taste of Peasant, in the eyes of the moniker’s human form, Damien DeRose, this was a mere appetizer to what would soon come to fruition". So that's what happened, it turns out I was not to keen on the appetizer, but I have to say the second course 'Shady Retreat' is absolutely delightful. Listen: 'Well Alright' Website: MySpace . John Hiatt - Take Root Festival 2008.

Image
This is John Hiatt performing a solo acoustic set at the Take Root Festival in Oosterpoort, Groningen, Holland back on the 4th October 2008. The material is a mixture of songs from across the years, along with a few from his current album of the time 'Same Old Man'. Some artists have the ability to grab my attention from the first chord and in this case the power, passion, energy and full sound just adds to the occasion. The radio host mentioned that John was flown in especially for this gig, having performed in North America throughout the summer promoting the album. He has also worked alongside Lyle Lovett on a number of occasions since 2008 and is currently touring Europe performing undertaking both solo and joint gigs with Lyle. Foo Fighters - Reading Festival 2002.

Image
The Foo Fighters are another one of those bands that have been around for a lot longer than it seems (for me anyway). Formed in 1995 by Dave Grohl originally as a one-man project after the dissolution of his previous band, Nirvana the Foo Fighters have of course gone on to stadium filling, Grammy award winning super group status. What would have been if Dave Grohl had accepted a permanent position as the drummer in Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers back in 1994 (he very nearly did). This is The Foo Fighters live at the Reading Festival (England) back on the 24th August 2002, and the recording comes with an additional four songs performed by the band on BBC TV's 'Later With Jools Holland' from November 2002. Source: FM & TV Broadcast. Sound Quality: Very good stereo (Nero Music Files). Genre: Alternative rock, post-grunge, hard rock. Set: Full Set. Set List: Reading Festival: 1. All My Life 2. Andrew Bird - With Bowl Of Fire Live 1998

Image
I have to admit I was about ten years late in 'discovering' Andrew Bird . It was only a couple of years ago that I first gave his music a listen and I have been kicking myself ever since (OK not literally), however the back catalogue has been fun to say the least. Back in the late 90's the music was quite different to today's indie rock and folk direction, with an element of old time swing and harmonies. Taking on the role of bandleader, Andrew Bird released Thrills on Rykodisc in 1997 with his group Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire, shortly followed by second album Oh! The Grandeur in 1998. Both albums were heavily influenced by traditional folk, pre-war jazz, and swing , with Andrew Bird relying on the violin as his primary musical instrument, as well as providing vocals along with his trademark verbose lyrics. The Bowl of Fire featured musicians from Andrew Bird's home town of Chicago, including Kevin O'Donnell, Nora O'Connor, Andy Hopkins , Jimmy Sut
