Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Tokyo 1998

Image
This is Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds performing at Fuji Rock in Tokyo back on the 2nd August 1998. This is a resonably well circulated recording of the show and is missing Brompton Oratory and possibly Whiskey Rye from the concert although there remains some confusion if the latter was performed on this occasion. Sound quality is good and Nick Cave comes across in an upbeat mood somewhat teasing the audience on a couple of occasion. The set list reads as a 'Best Of' up to this point in the bands history. 2010FM - May Edition Three

UK producers and remix sensations Mock and Toof released their debut full-length Tuning Echoes on Monday of this week. Riding a reputation as one of the most sought after acts on the DJ circuit, Mock & Toof demonstrate what happens when one combines an education in house music with a love of experimental pop and psychedelic rock. Duncan Stump (Mock) & Nick Woolfson (Toof) are two of the UK’s most creative music producers. Having made a name for themselves via 12” releases on James Murphy’s DFA Recordings and their own Tiny Sticks imprint; the pair have forged a reputation for brilliantly off-kilter, disco-fuelled house grooves that are laced with originality. Enough originality in fact to have caught the attention of Hot Chip, Zero 7, Holy Ghost! and Groove Armada who’ve all come calling for their remix services. Their press release goes on "Tuning Echoes is not a “nu-disco” album of grooves. It would have been far too easy for the duo to compile ten club tracks and c

Jenny Lewis - Live In Orlando 2009

Image
As mentioned in The Watson Twins feature, the pathway that led Beehive Candy to the twins was through Rilo Kiley and their lead singer Jenny Lewis . It's notable that performing as a solo artist Jenny has an alt country feel that is quite different to the music of Rilo Kiley, and demonstrates another dimension to her musical talent. Occasionally we feature audienced sourced material here, provided the audio quality is very clean and does the artist and the concert justice, which is the case with this recording. Recorded live at the Plaza Theater, Orlando, USA, last year on the 29th June this is a really good concert from Jenny Lewis. Source: Audience Sound Quality: Very Good stereo mp3@192kbps. The Watson Twins - Morning Becomes Eclectic 2007

Image
This is The Watson Twins on KCRW's wonderful Morning Becomes Eclectic programme, this particular performance took place on Monday 9th April 2007 at KCRW Studios, Santa Monica, CA, USA. I would imagine like a good number of music fans I became aware of The Watson Twins when they recorded 'Rabbit Fur Coat', their collaboration under the name Jenny Lewis with the Watson Twins. Jenny Lewis was of course the singer with Rilo Kiley, a band that has been mentioned in positive terms here on Beehive Candy in the past. This set includes a number of songs from their excellent 2006 release 'Southern Manners' and is a good introduction to the band for those unfarmiliar with them. Genre: Alternative country, indie folk Set: Full Studio Set Set List: 01 - Intro 02 - Southern Manners 03 - Waves 04 - Shoot The Lights Out 05 - Interview 06 - Friend And Foe 07 - Darlin' Song 08

2010FM - May Edition Two

In support of their new release, Sweet Sister, Annuals are currently touring with The Most Serene Republic and What Laura Says for the first leg of their summer tour . In 2006, the six members of Raleigh, NC group Annuals earned critical acclaim with their debut album, Be He Me.  Their expansive, energetic sound and tight pop sensibilities captured the hearts and ears of listeners and critics alike, and was followed by, Such Fun, on Canvasback Records in 2008. At an age where many are just starting their careers, Annuals, armed with a reputation for solid songwriting and several years of experience, now goes back to the formula and sound that first cemented their acclaim. The Sweet Sister EP marks band leader Adam Baker's return to the producer role, Annuals' return to a more tight-knit DIY collective, and a pure distillation of their trademark quirky pop experimentalism. Amy Winehouse - Norway 2007.

Image
This is Amy Winehouse live on the Amfiscenen Stage at the first Hove Festival in Arendal, Norway back on the 26th June 2007. This is a superb concert and includes a couple of excellent covers (Cupid, and Monkey Man) along with the regular material performed at the time. Despite the obsession of tabloid newspapers over every little flaw and mistake in Amy's life this concert reminds us of just how good an artist she is. During her 2009 stay in St. Lucia Amy Winehouse worked on new music with producer Salaam Remi. It has been confirmed by Island that a new album is due in 2010, Island co-president Darcus Beese said, "I've heard a couple of song demos that have absolutely floored me". On 27 April 2010, Winehouse's spokesperson said she was recording new material with Mark Ronson. Source: Soundboard Sound Quality: Excellent stereo mp3@192kbps. Cactus - Buffalo NY 1971

This is Cactus live at Gilligans, Buffalo, New York back on the 26th June 1971. A limited edition 2CD including this gig was also officially released on Rhino Records in 2004 (5000 numbered copies only worldwide) the latter half of the second CD included other live material. This is just the Gilligans gig from a bootleg copy which has been in circulation for a long time. This was the last performance from the original Cactus line up. A good number of music fans were introduced to the band through the 1972 sampler album 'The New Age Of Atlantic' which included the studio version of Long Tall Sally, which took the song from it's Rock'n'Roll roots to a much heavier rock anthem sound. Joni Mitchell and James Taylor - London 1970.

Image
This is Joni Mitchell and James Taylor in concert at the Royal Albert Hall, London back on the 28th October 1970. The performance was some two weeks after their collective appearance at the Amchitka Concert on October 16th 1970 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, which was a fund raising concert for what would eventually become GreenPeace. This is a high quality recording and reflects two people who are clearly enjoying themselves. The concert was originally broadcast on BBC Radio and is introduced by then BBC DJ John Peel, the concert was also broadcast on WNEW in New York Source: FM broadcast, soundboard. The Rolling Stones - Camden Theatre 1964

Image
Having recently covered The Rolling Stones BBC sessions from 1963 to 1965, this is another incredible recording from the same era. Recorded live at The Camden Theatre, London, England, on March 19th 1964 and subsequently broadcast on May 9th 1964 on The BBC "Rhythm And Blues" show, bootleg label The Swinging Pig eventually released a CD single (TSP-CDS-004) which from what I can gather was sourced from a soundboard tape rather than any BBC transcription disc recording. Source: Soundboard. Sound Quality: Excellent stereo mp3@320kbps. Genre: Rock, rock and roll, blues-rock, rhythm and blues, blues. Set: Full 'Rhythm And Blues' show set. Set List: 01. Comments: Nothing to add regarding this recording, The Swinging Pig released another Stones single boot called Chess Chicago outtakes also from 1964, more

Iris DeMent - Byron Bay Australia 1998

Image
This is Iris DeMent at the East Coast Blues and Roots Festival, Red Devil Park, Byron Bay, NSW, Australia back on April 10th 1998. The performance was subsequently broadcast on national radio on June 14th 1998. Iris DeMent's songs are typically simple, clearly told stories about life's pains and joys. She at times sounds a little like Dolly Parton and occasionally like Emmylou Harris. The songs are superb and in this performance she uses just guitar and piano, which makes for an intimate personal feel. This is the sort of country music I can enjoy, clear of stereotypical songs and falseness, rather just plain simple heartfelt songs stripped back and very roots orientated. Source: FM Broadcast Sound Quality: Very good stereo mp3@192kbps. Genre: Country, Folk. Set: Full Set. Set List: 01 Introduction 02 Let The Mystery Be 03 Easy's Getting Harder Every Day 04 When My Morning Comes Around 05 I'll Take My Sorrow Straight 0

2010FM - April Edition Three.

Image
With the third April edition of 2010FM we start with a band to watch out for this year, namely Elogy . The California based band are set to release its debut album 'One' on July 6th, 2010. With sweeping melodies, well thought out synth lines, and driving vocals, Elogy has recorded an album that is distinctly new, but that still evokes contemporaries like Coldplay, Muse, or Thirty Seconds To Mars. Based in Orange County, California, the members of Elogy came together four years ago under the leadership of Derek Cannavo. Transforming an old warehouse space into a fully functional, state of the art studio, Elogy began to develop their sound and their organization from scratch. Using their classical training as a foundation, the band quickly amassed a large catalogue of songs, and as they brought their music to a live setting, their sound began to evolve as well. The featured track certainy evokes thoughts of Coldplay in terms of vocals however the musical style is different and c
