The Bablers - LoveSeat - Hallelujah The Hills - Victoria Akua - Imogen Clark

The Bablers - Like The First Time (Album).

Finnish power pop veterans The Bablers and Big Stir Records can now announce the album release their fans have been waiting for: the new and definitive edition of the band's Like The First Time, long out of print and previously only available in Japan and Finland. Featuring a new track sequence and freshly remixed and rearranged tracks never before heard anywhere – and no fewer than six hit indie singles from the past three years – the album sees release on CD and streaming worldwide today April 25.

The story of The Bablers has become much more widely known outside their native Finland in recent years for good reason. It's been over forty years since the band came together as teenagers in the late '70s and took Finland's nascent power pop scene by storm with their debut album What's All About and its hit title track. For decades afterward, they remained a cult favorite among power pop aficionados worldwide until the surprise release of their acclaimed 2021 reunion album Psychadilly Circus won the band – in their longest-lived and definitive lineup of leader, singer-songwriter and guitarist Arto Tamminen, drummer Janne Haavisto, bassist Pekka Gröhn and guitarist Hannu Pikkarainen – a much broader and long-deserved audience of fans in the indie pop world. Those bookend releases tell a remarkable tale in themselves, but what keen-eared listeners have been slowly discovering since then is that the amazing story of The Bablers has a secret middle chapter... one that is about to be revealed at last.

The clues have been all over the indie airwaves since 2022, shortly after Psychadilly Circus bowed to near-universal acclaim, as a series of new singles from the band began to emerge and captivate the ears of the band's new fans. The indie hits began with “You Are The One For Me” (chosen by Stevie Van Zandt as The Coolest Song in the World This Week on SiriusXM's Underground Garage) and “Holding Me Tight Tonight”, followed in 2023 by “Mr. King” and “Thinking Of You”. Each found its way onto Top 10 charts on terrestrial and online radio in the US, UK and EU, paving the way for this year's “Together Forever” and the wonderful surprise of the beautiful and brand new “Where The Wind Blows Free”. Between them, they've revealed the band's unique versatility, varying in style from muscular pure power pop to highly sophisticated, groovy and infectiously catchy pop. Along the way, the press releases and social media posts from the band have teased the album from which these tunes originate: Like The First Time, a lost treasure hidden in plain sight for those curious enough to check Discogs, but never released on a global scale until now.

Originally issued only in Japan in 1998 by EMI, the album's first hit single “You Are The One For Me” received substantial airplay on Japanese national radio. Songs from the album were featured in TV commercials for the insurance company Nippon Life, Ford Motor Company and the Foreign Ministry of Japan. The next hit single “You Are The One For Me” became a karaoke favorite and is still widely heard in karaoke bars in Tokyo and elsewhere today. The album Like The First Time would go on to enjoy a Finnish release in 2000, and its songs would soar to greater glory still in the band's homeland: “Together Forever” was the winner of the Finnish Grammy Award (Emma) for Song of the Year in its Finnish language version, and two Finnish megastars, Samuli Edelmann and Vesa-Matti Loiri, recorded versions of the unforgettable ballad “Where The Wind Blows Free” under the title “Palava Pää”. But the forthcoming reissue of Like The First Time is the “first time” the album will be available to a global audience, making it a debut release to most of the indie pop, pop rock, power pop and classic rock fans in the world.

LoveSeat - Our Way (Album).

The first album of songs from Effingham, IL husband/wife duo LoveSeat is called “Our Way” and is released today April 25th, 2025. The album is composed of eight songs written or co-written by Bill and JJ Passalacqua, plus one throwback song written by Kirsty MacColl and Peter Glenister. The album was produced and engineered by Ezra Idlet in his Fayetteville, AR Trout Studios.

‘The Old Me’ is the standard bearer of the album, a classic country, waltz duet. It’s at once poignant, funny and sentimental. If songs can be judged by the number of requests, this one wins by a substantial margin.

The songwriting developed organically between a very experienced songwriter husband and a novice songwriter wife. The skill and experience of Bill combined with the excitement and drive of JJ to net some very real, personal songs for the “Our Way” album. Two songs came down a different path; Time Stand Still was written by JJ about the bittersweet feeling of watching one’s children grow up, Clock and Speedometer is a twenty year old song written for country radio by Bill.

The songs feature a playful interplay between husband and wife, featuring love peppered with a lot of laughs. While the language is ‘clean’ throughout, some of the lyrics are a bit spicy, with a few references to sex and drug and alcohol use.

The album crosses a lot of genres from folk to rock and roll, touching on country and bluegrass at times. Some of the songs are stripped down, while others include full band instrumentation, truly something for everyone interested in roots/Americana styles.

Hallelujah The Hills - Crush All Night.

Today, prolific Boston indie rock ensemble Hallelujah The Hills unveil their latest single, “Crush All Night,” a feverish anthem that surges with raw energy and searing hooks. This track offers another glimpse into their forthcoming magnum opus, DECK, set for release on June 13th, 2025, via Discrete Pageantry Records and Best Brother Records.

Featuring a dynamic guest vocal from Speedy Ortiz’s Sadie Dupuis (SAD13), “Crush All Night” embodies what frontman Ryan H. Walsh describes as “Dirtbag Rock.” Walsh elaborates: “In our band, we have a genre of song that we sometimes like to mess around with that we’ve titled Dirtbag Rock. ‘Crush All Night’ is a great example of a Dirtbag Rock song. I wanted this track to sound like running red lights and smoking cigarettes inside a church. But also, the lyrics try to rise above all that; the adventure might take in an old Camaro, but the stakes are mythical. And then the great Sadie Dupuis comes in on vocals and it just takes it to a whole ‘nother level. We hope this single, coming on the heels of ‘Fake Flowers at Sunset,’ will give listeners a hint at just how many different sounds we’ve packed inside the DECK.”

Clocking in at a tight three minutes, the track barrels forward with gritty guitar riffs, lo-fi drum machines, and warped vocal layers that capture the chaotic euphoria of late-night escapades. Dupuis’ haunting vocals intertwine with Walsh’s, elevating the song’s intensity and adding an otherworldly shimmer to the beautifully unhinged composition.

“Crush All Night” follows the release of “Fake Flowers at Sunset,” a folk song with a disco beat that features a haunting guest vocal from Cassie Berman (Silver Jews). This track subverts the notion that nature serves as an apt metaphor for human relationships, examining love’s intensity with both longing and hesitation.

Victoria Akua - The River.

Victoria Akua from Copenhagen Denmark, describes her music as a genre mix of indie pop, folky singer-songwriter and meditative music. The new single The River drops today April 25, 2025 via Greywood Records.

Her new single: "The River is a celebration of friendship and connection. Friendships that keep growing and evolving, like a stream of water running freely, softly and wildly. I began writing The River, in 2018, and in the meantime it’s also been called “The Friendship Song” in my nearest circle. What makes me smile about this recording, is that three of my closest friends are singing along with me."

Victoria's music is based on her own journey, which began at a young age, searching for more balance and a deeper peace and understanding within herself. In a hectic world where it is so easy to be pulled in many directions, she wants to find ways to stay centered with an open heart in the hope that her music can support others on their own paths. The intention of the music is to have a nourishing, calming and healing effect.

Music that comes from the heart and that reflects and creates inner peace, trust and self-love - and connects us. Her music is inspired by the rhythms and cycles of nature, healthy and nurturing connections between people and creating spaces for expression, creativity and loving energy. Through the simplicity of the music, the listener is invited directly into a calm cocoon where breathing becomes deeper and the mind can rest.

Imogen Clark - Squinters.

Imogen Clark has a new album Choking on Fuel due May 30, 2025. It’s reimagined versions of songs from her album The Art of Getting Through (2024) that have been stripped down to their singer/songwriter roots and includes a cover of Sheryl Crowe’s “If It Makes You Happy.”

Imogen Clark calls Nashville home, but earned her stripes as a high-schooler playing bars in her native Western Sydney. Touring with Shania Twain, Steve Poltz and Bowen * Young, collaborating with Colin Hay and Jim Lauderdale and many more, Imogen has earned the respect of her heroes and peers through her deeply personal storytelling, roof-raising voice and leave it all out on the field live energy. Her witty, melodic songwriting crosses generations and genres, with influences from Joni Mitchell to Jason Isbell, Led Zeppelin to Taylor Swift.

After a breakneck year in 2024 of non-stop touring, Imogen’s new album Choking on Fuel sees her returning to her roots. Armed with an acoustic guitar, Imogen is rolling out a record that captures the intensity, vulnerability, musical dexterity and vocal power that characterizes her compelling live performances. “I spent last year on the road around the world, playing headline shows but also touring with Robyn Hitchcock, Steve Poltz, Bowen * Young and Andrew Farriss”, Imogen explains. “So many people have messaged me or commented on my social media to say that they would love to have an album that captured the spirit of what I do live, and that’s what this is”.

The album puts Imogen’s rich, devastating vocals front and center, foregrounding her deft, cutting lyrics and affecting melodies. A mix of co-writes and purely self-penned songs, the record runs the emotional gamut from the wry, incendiary All Hard Feelings (with 70s style backing vocals from co-writers Sinead Burgess and Blake O’Connor, who also tears up a blistering slide guitar solo) to the raw, powerful anthem The Last of Me (with My Morning Jacket’s Bo Koster on propulsive piano), the road not taken nightmare of Squinters (a co-write with Steve Poltz powered by Bryan Sutton’s nuanced acoustic guitar)to the delicate, timeless wisdom of If Your Heart Never Breaks (featuring gorgeous harmonies from co-writer Jim Lauderdale and a dexterous and beautiful guitar from the iconic Tommy Emmanuel).

Big Little Lions - Victoria Akua - The Shootouts - Taylor Rae - Esther Rose

Big Little Lions - Nothing Makes Sense Anymore.

Nothing Makes Sense Anymore examines the disturbing new political world in which we are living, trying to understand the madness. The song also pleads for us to keep connecting with each other, to help each other through the daily barrage of new absurdity.

Big Little Lions are an award winning duo who were born out of a collaboration that won them a JUNO Award in 2014. Since then they have been cranking out infectious folk pop songs that are jam-packed with emotion and tight harmonies that sound like the product of two people working side-by-side instead of living in different countries.

They have released 6 albums to date, which have garnered them awards and nominations including the CFMA Ensemble of the Year, Independent Music Awards Americana Sing of the Year and John Lennon Songwriting Competition Song of the Year. Their critically acclaimed music has appeared on the CBC’s Top 20 and featured on shows like q and Vinyl Cafe. The duo consists of Paul Otten and Helen Austin, both hugely prolific songwriters - their music has been placed in hundreds of movie trailers, ads, network TV shows.

Their live show is quite the spectacle with Paul playing drums, bass and keyboard all while singing lead vocals. Helen, who is no slacker either, sings, plays guitar and foot percussion. They use every limb, and then some, to make two people sound like a full band. Their music has been dubbed by Mariposa Folk Festival as ‘a blissful marriage of new folk and sophisticated pop’, and is packed with emotion and tight harmonies.

Victoria Akua - Surrender.

We are really pleased to feature Victoria Akua's new single released today for the simple reason that we think it's absolutely exquisite! Victoria Akua on her new single: "It is so easy to get caught up in fears and desires - and both is related to the past and the future, and as I see it, it takes us away from where life is happening - in this moment! “I want to let life surprise me, instead of trying to figure it all out”. This sentence has come to me many times, especially in situations where I’ve been trying to control the outcome — it helps me relax and trust more. Life just feels so much more joyful, creative and alive with that sense of openness to it."

Victoria's music is based on her own journey, which began at a young age, searching for more balance and a deeper peace and understanding within herself. In a hectic world where it is so easy to be pulled in many directions, she wants to find ways to stay centered with an open heart in the hope that her music can support others on their own paths.

The Shootouts - Trampoline (feat: Lindsay Lou).

Akron, Ohio’s Rustbelt Americana torchbearers, The Shootouts, have announced the May 30th release of their new album Switchback on Transoceanic Records. The forthcoming collection finds the band refining their sound by incorporating elements of roots rock and bluegrass while maintaining their traditional country sensibilities. Their infectious first single, “Trampoline,” featuring ethereal guest vocals from Lindsay Lou is an exciting taste of what's to follow, it's really that good!.

Recorded in Nashville, TN, The Shootouts brought in Dan Knobler (Allison Russell, Lake Street Dive, Bahamas), to produce, mix, and co-engineer Switchback. The collaboration was exactly what the three band members (Ryan Humbert / lead vocals & rhythm guitar; Emily Bates / backing vocals & acoustic guitar; and Brian Poston / lead guitar) had hoped for: someone who shared their vision and brought fresh ideas to the group. The result is the natural progression of a seasoned band whose sound continues to evolve without losing its identity.

Switchback opens with “Trampoline,” followed by the high-energy rocker “The Other Side of My Life.” Lou, Sam Bush, and Mickey Raphael lend their talents to an original take on the 80s pop classic “Only You” by UK duo Yazoo (aka Yaz in North America).

Two country legends accompany Humbert on vocals, starting with Rodney Crowell on the country folk-infused “Half a World Away,” and Vince Gill on an electrifying rendition of “I’ll Be Damned,” a song he penned and recorded as a member of Pure Prairie League in 1980. “Only Good at Goodbye” features a guest vocal by singer/songwriter Logan Ledger, with the renowned Russ Pahl on pedal steel.

Taylor Rae - Telluride (feat. Sierra Hull).

Austin-based singer/songwriter Taylor Rae unveiled today her new single “Telluride” featuring a guest appearance by Grammy-nominated artist Sierra Hull. The latest to release off her new album The Void (due out April 18th), the track arrives on the heels of her debut at SXSW, which prompted NPR Music to name her on their Best of SXSW 2025 list. With a bluegrass-tinge and steady groove, “Telluride” is a windows-down, road-wary anthem that calls to mind the likes of Petty’s “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” or Zeppelin’s “Going to California.” It was featured on Relix who raved “‘Telluride’ is easy listening and an ideal track for a journey on the road or of the heart.”

"I should start by saying that I have never been to Telluride,” stated Rae. “I have, however, been to just about every other corner of that state, and have driven through the Southwest Region of the United States countless times. This song seed came while on a radio tour through Colorado, which ended right before the weekend of Telluride Bluegrass Festival, and I remember feeling so bummed that I wasn't attending. Feeling left out, behind in life, and alone, I drove myself back home to Austin and finished the bulk of the song in the driver's seat. Living life on the road allows much time for contemplation, processing, and accepting. It can be addicting because of this, referenced in the line 'time stands still on the road.' Who wouldn’t be addicted to time standing still? For that reason, it gets overwhelming coming off the road. Things seem to move at a lightning speed making it hard for someone like me, who has a hard time with transitions, to ride the wave.”

She continued, “When I met Sierra, I immediately dreamt of her contributing to this song. Before the song was even finished, before recording this album was even in my head, I knew I wanted her to be a part of it. She brought this song to life, and I thought with the bluegrass/Telluride reference, it would just make so much sense to have the mandolin queen herself grace our presence."

Esther Rose - Had To.

Esther Rose will release Want on May 2, 2025 via New West Records. The 11-track set was produced by Ross Farbe (of Video Age) and recorded live-to-tape at the Bomb Shelter in Nashville, TN. Want is the anticipated follow up to 2023’s Safe to Run which was met with wide acclaim from The New York Times, Pitchfork, Stereogum, No Depression, and more. The album features appearances by the singer songwriter Dean Johnson as well as members of Video Age, The Deslondes, and Silver Synthetic.

Following the wide-open serenity of Safe to Run, Rose now leans toward confrontational arrangements full of distortion and full-band spontaneity, never sacrificing a classicist’s gift for melody that makes each song instantly memorable. “For me, these songs felt like revelations,” she explains, comparing the record to a memoir, alive with kinetic storytelling and personal insight. Ranging from stark solo performances to grungy blowouts, the album maintains a steady focus while never staying too long in one place. Vivid and bracing, she has made the most adventurous, hardest-hitting record of her career.

Yesterday, Rose shared the video for the album standout “Had To,” which was directed by Anthony Simpkins of GemsOnVHS. She says, “In ‘Had To,’ I examine my relationship with alcohol, and also my relationship with touring. A long time ago, I heard New Orleans legend Washboard Chaz say this: ‘People are always offering musicians exposure. But you can die from too much exposure!’ Since writing this song, I have stopped drinking, but I have not stopped touring.”

Denielle Bassels - Victoria Akua - Steph Cameron - Tobacco City - Bambara

Denielle Bassels - Songbird.

Canadian JUNO-nominated powerhouse vocalist Denielle Bassels releases a new single, "Songbird," a haunting and introspective ballad that explores the complexity of love, loss, and societal judgement. Releasing on February 7th, 2025, on all platforms, "Songbird" is the third offering from Bassels' forthcoming album It Goes Like This, and once again showcases her dynamic range as a singer and songwriter.

"Songbird" finds jazz/blues chanteuse extraordinaire Denielle Bassels crossing arbitrary genre boundaries with a gorgeous foray into a folk ballad with country vibes. In an astonishingly beautiful and tender vocal performance, Bassels tells the story of a seemingly joyful songbird by day who becomes a lonesome wolf by night. It encapsulates the emotional turmoil of losing a deeply troubled partner, and the burden of mourning in silence. The melodic turns and vocal harmonies from Bridgette Anderson are stunning; Drew Jurecka's string arrangement is heartbreaking; and Ewan Farncombe's brief organ solo is as engaging as it is subtle.

"'Songbird' tells the story of a relationship with a person whose struggles with addiction led to their untimely passing," says Bassels. "It's meant to evoke a quiet, profound sense of mourning – an unspoken grief that remains unsolved in the face of social stigma."

Victoria Akua - Radical Self Love.

Released today 'Radical Self Love', is the second single of artist Victoria Akua from Copenhagen, Denmark. Victoria describes her music as a genre mix of indie pop, folky singer-songwriter and meditative music.

Victoria Akua on her new single: "Like leaves falling from the trees in autumn, I’m reminded of the natural cycles within us. Not all of them are easy, but each one is essential. Radical self-love means embracing every part of ourselves – not just the ones we find easy to love, but also the ones we believe are unlovable."

Through the simplicity of the music, the listener is invited directly into a calm cocoon where breathing becomes deeper and the mind can rest.

Steph Cameron - Rain.

Polaris Music Prize nominee Steph Cameron returns with "Rain", the first offering from her highly anticipated third studio album, ‘Blood Moon,’ out later this year via Neon Moon Records. Accompanied by a striking new music video, the single finds the Saskatoon-born artist expanding her sonic palette, weaving elements of indie Americana into her signature folk roots.

A hauntingly poetic ballad, “Rain” blurs the lines between longing and memory, its evocative lyrics carried by a melody as fleeting as the wind. Rich in atmosphere and emotional depth, the track showcases Cameron’s arresting lyricism and emotive vocal delivery, elevated by the skillful production and mixing of John Raham and engineering work by Mike Lefebvre. Cameron’s hands-on approach to the production ensures a sound that is both intimate and exquisitely polished.

“Rain is the first song I wrote in this genre—a significant departure from the sparse, revivalist folk music I’m known for,” Cameron shares. “This song allowed me to be playful with vocals and structure them in a more layered way than I have in previous recordings. Rain is about the dissipation of the soul and the search for those we’ve loved and lost. It reflects on connecting with those who have passed by finding them in the earth, the elements, and the natural world.”

Tobacco City - Bougainvillea.

There's plenty of country influence around these days, but few contemporary bands hit the sweet spot for me the way Tobacco City does. The wry humor, the mundanity and the heartbreak all in equal measure make them real torch bearers for classic country songwriting the way I've always loved it. Today we're sharing second and final single Bougainvillea, along with a beautiful video for it.

In Chris Coleslaw's words: “Bougainvillea is my favorite song on the album. It’s another nostalgia trip about the time in your younger years when you are free to be stupid and silly with very little consequence. Those days of excess were wild and illuminating but eventually times have to keep changing but the view from the heights of those times never changes.”

Bambara - Letters From Sing Sing.

Bambara’s new single "Letters From Sing Sing" is out today! This classic Bambara rager drops with a video by Jason Miller featuring Wife Erath and the band. The video captures the grim madness of the track’s narrator, depicting a scene that fits neatly within Birthmarks’ intricate, multi-generational story arc.

Birthmarks (out 3/14) emerges directly from the band’s favored aesthetics and themes, but captures them with a new sense of sonic adventurousness and thematic subtlety, resulting in a collection of songs that are somehow both the band’s most apocalyptic and most poignant. Produced by Graham Sutton (Bark Psychosis, These New Puritans) and the band, Birthmarks is a wild, musically adventurous suite of songs that follows a host of lost characters caught in a cycle of love, violence and rebirth.
