Big Little Lions - Hannah Scott - Hurtsfall - Les Flâneurs - Laura Adeline - Alex Hall - Astari Nite

Big Little Lions - Finish What You Started.

Multi award winning cross border duo, Big Little Lions are going to be releasing monthly singles, which is good news for Beehive Candy as they have been consistently delivering creative and exceptional songs for over a decade.  Big Little Lions are a duo who were born out of a collaboration that won them a JUNO Award in 2014. Since then they have been cranking out infectious folk pop songs that are jam-packed with emotion and tight harmonies that sound like the product of two people working side-by-side instead of living in different countries.

They have released 7 albums to date, which have garnered them awards and nominations including the CFMA Ensemble of the Year, Independent Music Awards Americana Sing of the Year and John Lennon Songwriting Competition Song of the Year. Their critically acclaimed music has appeared on the CBC’s Top 20 and featured on shows like q and Vinyl Cafe. The duo consists of Paul Otten and Helen Austin, both hugely prolific songwriters - their music has been placed in hundreds of movie trailers, ads, network TV shows.

Their live show is quite the spectacle with Paul playing drums, bass and keyboard all while singing lead vocals. Helen, who is no slacker either, sings, plays guitar and foot percussion. They use every limb, and then some, to make two people sound like a full band.

Hannah Scott - Sitting In The Dark.

Some background on this notable (to say the least) song from Hannah Scott "I wrote this song in early 2022 about my experiences of renting in London over a fifteen-year period. The song captures the final two weeks I spent in a studio flat in Ealing without working lights - just one example of the challenges I faced despite spending well into six figures on rent."

Some background: “Your music moved me to tears.” This is the refrain contemporary folk artist Hannah Scott regularly hears as she leaves the stage. The best stories make us feel deeply and in the 15 years she has been writing and performing, Hannah has become an exceptional storyteller. Her music is shaped by human connections, with family, in all its chaos and glory, sitting at the heart of her work. Her lyrics are powerful and poignant, and her voice feels strangely familiar, though you can’t quite put your finger on why. Her writing may be deeply personal but her music has a universal appeal that goes beyond the melodies you catch yourself humming in the days after listening to her songs.

The connection she builds with her audiences is most evident in the stories shared by audience members after her performances: the woman whose elderly mother lost a sibling in childhood and is moved to tears by Boy In The Frame; the young father who, upon hearing My Dad & I, realises he wants to spend more time with his small children; the adoptive parents who, like Hannah as a step-parent, may not have been the first person to hold their child, but Love You Like I Did. A deep-rooted desire for this connection has always been the driving force behind her songwriting and live performances.

Hurtsfall - Memento Mori.

Memento Mori, is the new single from Nottingham darkwave/post-punk trio Hurtsfall (out 1 May). Built around a driving post-punk bass line and brooding synth textures, Memento Mori explores the tension between intimacy and impermanence, that moment where connection is overshadowed by the awareness that everything is temporary. With a vocal that moves between restraint and release, it balances gothic atmosphere with a direct emotional edge.

Hurtsfall write and produce independently in Nottingham and have become a recognised presence on the UK alternative scene, with recent performances at Dot to Dot Festival, Whitby Goth Weekend, and Infest. They have shared stages with Ghost Dance, Skeletal Family, Miranda Sex Garden, and Aurelio Voltaire. Upcoming shows include appearances alongside Pink Turns Blue and The March Violets, as well as a festival slot at Darker Days.

With Memento Mori, Hurtsfall continue to refine their blend of darkwave atmosphere and emotional immediacy — a sound rooted in tradition but reaching toward something more immediate and human.

Les Flâneurs - Pretty in the Dark.

'Pretty in the Dark' the new single for producer Alessandro Marchetti's project Les Flâneurs is a nocturnal synth-pop track about trying to feel beautiful even when everything inside and around you feels unstable. Moving through dim lights, crowded rooms, and quiet inner tension, it captures the fragile balance between confidence and vulnerability. Beneath its shimmering synths lies a subtle resistance: a way of holding onto yourself while the world blurs, judges, or pulls you down. It’s about finding a personal light in the dark because not everything is perfect, and in spite of it.

For Pretty in the Dark video, Marchetti choose and obtained to syncronize Night Market, a 2023 2D animated short film created by Yingyu Zhu, Chenyi Zhu, and Xinyu Sun from the School of Visual Arts (SVA) in the USA. They are a three-person director team, Chenyi Zhu is responsible for animation, Yingyu Zhu and Chenyi Zhu are responsible for character design, Xinyu Sun and Yingyu Zhu is responsible for the scene design. The film tells the story of a young girl with cancer who finds escape from her isolated hospital life by following glowing butterflies into a magical, vibrant night market. The short explores with delicacy and dreamlikeness themes of illness, imagination, and hope.

Les Flâneurs is the project of the musician and producer Alessandro Marchetti. His first album A Long Season (2020) was played in countless nations around the world and got rave reviews and appreciation. Afterwards, the project entered a phase of exploration. The new album Afterglow, to be released in 2026,  arrives after six years of research, experimentation, and collaboration — a slow process shaped by mood, instinct, and artistic necessity rather than industry timing. Alex Marchetti is the creative mind behind the project. He writes, records, arranges, mixes, and produces the music, shaping every detail of the sound. Les Flâneurs is not conceived as a live act, but as a studio-driven project, in which atmosphere, texture, and emotional depth are central.

Laura Adeline - Acquainted.

Like slipping into a soft-focus daydream you don’t want to leave, Naarm/Melbourne-based artist Laura Adeline creates a sweet escape in her new single ‘Acquainted’, out Friday, May 1. Silky and smooth, this tune is Laura's latest addition to her velvety and intimate R&B catalogue. With her vulnerable storytelling, interlaced with textured beats and smooth synthesisers, Laura Adeline remains authentic and vibrant. Receiving considerable endorsement from Triple J, Triple J Unearthed, and Apple Music for previous singles 'Curbside' and '501s' and included in publications The AU Review, AAA Backstage, Stereofox and more, Laura is back with a more stripped-back and experimental version of herself.

‘Acquainted’ draws from a mix of studio-written lyrics and journal entries pulled from years of personal notes, tracing the lingering confusion, anger, remorse and regret that can follow long after a relationship ends. Speaking on the track, Laura shares:

“Acquainted is about looking back on something and thinking that I wish this person the best… but I’m actually still mad. But then they probably have the right to be mad at me, too… but I've changed. Have they changed? I don’t want to ever see them again, but if I do… I hope I can find out. And then this process repeats itself.”

Intoxicatingly lustrous, ‘Acquainted’ drifts through a floaty, daydream-like haze, supported by a fusion of R&B and alternative pop threaded together with modern funk sensibilities to offer a refined, minimalist sound. Underpinned by subtle electric drums, laid-back bass and reverb-soaked guitar parts, Laura's rich, mesmerizing vocals stand out beautifully.

Alex Hall - Turn This Love Around (EP).

Nashville-based singer-songwriter Alex Hall has released his star-studded new EP Turn This Love Around. Boasting collaborations with Vince Gill, Tenille Townes and Mae Estes, the five-song collection finds Hall embracing creative freedom as an independent artist, with vulnerable love songs that don’t shy away from the turmoil of everyday life.

“The Turn This Love Around EP is a project about love, growth, the highs and lows of it all, and everything in between,” says Hall. “It touches on my experience with sobriety, the work it takes to build a strong marriage, and stepping into a different side of myself as a songwriter. When it came time to record, I went in a different direction – rather than bringing in the usual top session players in Nashville, I made the record in the studio with close friends I’ve shared the stage with over the years. I think that gave it more of my own fingerprint. It was also really special to have friends like Mae Estes, Tenille Townes, and Vince Gill be part of it. I’m a huge fan of all three, and I’m grateful to make music alongside them.”

Townes, who teamed up with Hall and Gill on the uplifting title track, says: “I love this song so much and I will always smile looking back at the day at Vince’s studio when we all wrote this. The stories shared and the time together talking about the heart of music is something I’ll always carry with me. So glad this song found us that day, and what a joy to be a part of this release! Alex is one of my favourite voices to sing with and a friend I’ve known in this community for a long time, and having a song with the legendary Vince Gill is an absolute dream.”

Astari Nite has just announced the release of their new EP, Medications In Bloom. Medications In Bloom is available on limited edition compact disc and on all major digital outlets worldwide. Astari Nite is known for blending elements of alternative, post-punk and new wave, resulting in a distinctive dark / glam alt sound. Hannah Scott - Argo & The Violet Queens - I See Orange - TRAITRS - Scarlett Macfarlane - Hector Gannet

Hannah Scott - In Your Light.

It's been a while since we last featured Hannah Scott and Beehive Candy are delighted to share her latest release 'In Your Light' the first single from her forthcoming EP, Threads (due 19 June). Hannah is a Suffolk-born, South London-based contemporary folk artist, whose consistently produced fabulous songs with the latest being no exception. As a gentle teaser for the EP I'll just add, if you like this song, you are going to love the rest!

Hannah tells us: Some songs are written, recorded and released within months, while others wait patiently for their time to shine. In Your Light falls firmly into the latter camp, having been written as a gift for Hannah’s mother’s 50th birthday - some 15 years ago - because she couldn’t afford to buy her a present. The song showcases Hannah’s gift for storytelling, with gentle, poignant lyrics and nostalgic warmth, enhanced by her rich vocals and soaring string lines.

Threads follows Hannah’s widely praised 2024 album Absence Of Doubt and marks the first release she has both written and produced. She worked alongside acclaimed engineer Adrian Hall (Tori Amos, Anna Calvi), and recorded piano, acoustic guitar and vocals at home, with a makeshift vocal booth inside her wife’s wardrobe! These songs are inspired by family, nostalgia and grief - and, perhaps unexpectedly, a desire to change the rental market for the better.

As the lyric suggests (“With grace and thought and faith // You taught me to create”), Hannah’s mother, Judith is also an artist. She has created a series of artworks for the EP and its two singles, all featuring Hannah’s childhood home, which is the theme of title track.

Argo & The Violet Queens - Casablanca.

Argo and the Violet Queens are a psychedelically driven band based out of Washington DC, who aim to synthesize and reimagine the 20th century’s most pre-eminent genres in a modern setting. Sonically, all four members make unique contributions to the band’s sound, from their implementation of seventies dance sensibilities, abstract auditory textures, and rhythmic flourishes informed by jazz tradition, the band maintains an open canvas for their eclectic influences to take form.

A guiding ethos for Argo and the Violet Queens comes from the band’s deliberate explorations of contexts in which dance music has previously flourished. By drawing comparisons with our current moment, Argo and the Violet Queens create the conditions for critical reflections of social issues to occur in tandem with celebrations of resilience and community. Ultimately, though, Argo and the Violet Queens make killer psychedelic-rock tracks which hold a mirror up to the listener, allowing one to engage with sonic worlds that are pensive, and hopeful in equal measure.

When writing and recording their new single ‘Casablanca’, Argo and the Violet Queens took inspiration from Peter Jackson’s Beatles documentary ‘Get Back’ and sat down together in the studio as a full band as if they were going to perform live. No separation, no over-dubs or studio trickery, just the refreshing raw electrifying energy and of a band that have grown up together, playing together.

One of three live studio recordings the band completed in the last days of 2025, ‘Casablanca’ is a potent distillation of the chemistry Argo and the Violet Queens have developed over three tours, over 65 live shows and countless hours spent rehearsing that year.

I See Orange - Wine Boy.

Rising alternative post-grunge trio I See Orange return this March with their new single 'Wine Boy'. The new single comes fresh off the back of performances at New Colossus Festival in New York City, before heading to Austin, Texas for SXSW, with backline provided via the band's new sponsorship from Orange Amps. These consecutive US showcase appearances mark a significant step in the band’s international growth, following a strong run of UK festival performances across 2024–2025 and expanding global radio support.

Blending the grit of 1990s grunge with a modern melodic edge, 'Wine Boy' continues to define I See Orange’s heavy yet hook-driven alternative rock sound. Built around driving basslines, textured guitars and powerful vocal delivery, the single grows from its spacious, tight verse to the grungy tones and layered harmonies, blending fuzzy guitar work with infectious melodies to showcase both a rock intensity and a commercial edge.

Formed in 2022 after lead singer and bassist Giselle Medina relocated from Mexico to the UK, I See Orange quickly found creative chemistry with British musicians Cameron Hill (guitar/backing vocals) and Charlie Hart (drums). Their debut EP Lonesome Joy established their signature blend of post-grunge weight, classic rock influence and contemporary alternative energy.

TRAITRS - Possessor (Album).

After releasing a slew of riveting singles, coldwave perfectionists TRAITRS are proud to share their new album, Possessor. Out this weekend on all streaming platforms, the new album is packed with ten songs filled with reverb-drenched guitars, rushing 808s, and haunting, yet mesmerizing vocals.

Previous singles on the album have been described by critics as evocative and deeply human, driven by themes of grief, isolation, ecstatic release, and the darker corners of the subconscious.“Burn In Heaven” showcases TRAITRS’ signature blend of atmospheric synths, driving rhythms, and emotionally charged lyrics. The song delivers a powerful and anthemic sound that marks a bold evolution in the band's sonic landscape.

A melancholic meditation wrapped in gothic electronics, "i was ill, you were wrong" finds TRAITRS exploring their most vulnerable terrain to date. It is a track that holds the listener close in the cold, balancing raw intimacy with a sweeping cinematic scale. The single deepens the duo’s position as essential voices within modern post punk.

“Dream Drowning” evokes a sense of urgency with its thought-provoking lyrics. On the captivating new track, TRAITRS aim to analyze the meanings and emotions behind their dreams. Showcasing the horrors of everyday life on an endless loop, the Canadian duo create a track shrouded in mystery.

Scarlett Macfarlane - Immortal.

Scarlett Macfarlane returns with “Immortal,” a powerful and defiant pop-rock single built around themes of resilience, self-worth, and inner strength. Written as an empowering anthem, the song embraces the idea that while life’s challenges may knock us down, something essential within us remains unbreakable.

“I wanted to write a song that made you feel empowered and inspired,” Scarlett explains. “A song that made you want to put a fist in the air. A song that reminded you of your own strength and fortitude.” For Scarlett, immortality isn’t about living forever in a literal sense, but about the endurance of identity and creation. The idea that what we make and who we are continues long after moments of struggle pass. “Our essence is ultimately unkillable,” she says. “We have this crazy inner fortitude to come back swinging.”

The concept of immortality has long resonated with Scarlett, shaping both the song’s title and its central message. The track leans into bold, arena-ready energy, combining modern pop production with classic rock foundations to create something designed to feel larger than life. “Who comes out the gate with an arena-ready song and sings about all of us being immortal?” she laughs.

The song came together quickly, written during an unexpected moment of inspiration while waiting at the gym. Realizing she didn’t yet have a song in her catalogue that matched the empowering energy she gravitated toward while working out, Scarlett set out to write one herself. The recording process with Grammy-winning producer Scott Jacoby helped bring that vision fully into focus, particularly when the chorus was reworked to drop into half-time, giving it the impact she had imagined from the beginning. “I wanted that sort of Queen ‘We Will Rock You’ impact,” she says. “When we made that change, the chorus really landed the way I always imagined.”

Hector Gannet - Seven Signs.

Hector Gannet released their new single “Seven Signs” on Friday, ahead of their third record which is expected to arrive in the autumn of 2026. The band are currently in Austin, Texas for SXSW, adding to their live history with Elbow, Sam Fender and Richard Thompson.

Hector Gannet’s emotive sounds have been praised by music lovers from Chris Packham to Sam Fender and acclaimed as “North Shields’ answer to Crazy Horse” (Uncut Magazine). This reception is now justified by new single “Seven Signs”, a rousing soul sermon which blends the group’s North Eastern heart with touches of Dexy’s, Style Council-period Paul Weller and a bit of the Boss.

The single’s soulful power is there in the sweet brass parts, arranged by North Shields-resident US brass expert Jason Holcomb, who has worked with Ohio soul supremos The O’Jays. But where Hector Gannet’s music is anchored in past rock and pop classicism, the words take it somewhere else – towards a wonderfully literate Tyneside modernism. The song opens with a wheezing Gabriel relocated to the edge of Springsteen’s Born To Run, “Pulling at the feathers / Underneath his motorcycle vest.” The narrative then builds to a widescreen consideration of class, moral responsibility and redemption. A hoped-for state of grace comes “one revelation at a time”.

“Seven Signs is about the God Complex,” says lead singer/guitarist/songwriter Aaron Duff. “And how those suffering from it seem to actually believe in their powers. I used a lot of Biblical references with the lyrics, which informs the vocal delivery and leans into the soulful drive we ended up with. The first time I heard the horns I just couldn’t help shouting 'Dexy’s!’ Jason [the brass arranger] really hit the nail on the head there.”

The Faux Faux - Kendall Lujan - Hannah Scott - Jesse Hite - BC Camplight - Cody Hall

The Faux Faux - Cold Hearted Woman.

Faith Vern, lead singer of notorious Manchester punk band PINS, has shared new single ‘Cold Hearted Woman’. The single, a swaggering and smoky number, marks the launch of her new solo project, The Faux Faux, as well as the relaunch of the Drowned in Sound Singles Club. “We’ve always championed Faith’s work in the ultimate punk gang PINS” says Drowned in Sound founder Sean Adams. “We got talking a couple of years ago, when she sang with Iggy Pop at the BBC’s legendary Maida Vale studios and kept in touch.”

“When I murmured that I was thinking of bringing back the label, Faith mentioned a solo project… and as I absolutely adored what she sent over, here we are, restarting the singles club that previously kicked off the careers of Kaiser Chiefs, Bat for Lashes, Martha Wainwright and more. This is track one from what will be a slowly released 10-track compilation of new artists I love, with a new track arriving each month.”

With a chill in its bones and a fire in its belly ‘Cold Hearted Woman’ is a debut single that feels as if it has just marched off the set of Peaky Blinders or John Cassavetes’ Gloria. “I’ve always been intrigued by Cindy Sherman, Sylvia Plath, Gregory Crewdson, Virginia Woolf, Nan Goldin to name a few,” explains Faith Vern, “these writers, poets, photographers, artists, who have shown us the beauty and the desperation in the mundane.”

Vern continues “After the birth of my first child I needed more space which meant moving from my one bedroom flat in Prestwich to a ‘proper’ house. Somehow my husband and I convinced ourselves that we should head to the country, little did we know that lockdown was lurking… I was writing about being somewhere and feeling trapped, anxiety and coping mechanisms.” “The chorus ‘I’m a Cold Hearted Woman’ is of course tongue-in-cheek, it’s almost like once everything, all your personality, freedom, joy, is forced out of you, you just sorta go ‘ok fk it, you think I’m cold, well yes, here it is...’ ”

Kendall Lujan - Forger Me Knots.

The striking talents of rising Portland artist Kendall Lujan will be impossible to miss in the coming year. Her indie-operatic voice stratifies songs through octave runs, making moody, melodic folk rock. To rise out of Portland's flush music scene is no easy feat, Lujan has been making herself heard by singing harmonies in AC Sapphire’s backing band The Shoulderpads.

In her latest project Lujan steps out in front of the band. Many folks introduction to Lujan will be “Another”, a song of lingering desire that floats Lujan’s vocal range over a small symphony of archtop guitar and strings. Her strengthy voice –which ranges from mountain holler to bird-like warble, seems to hang in the air. She sings a song about retracing steps to the point where love was lost, and resolves to regain that trail in another life.

Lujan opens the moody “Dot My I’s” solo, fingerpicking guitar, giving us a chance to hear her commanding voice. Layered vocals and gentle driven drums join Lujan in a pocket groove. Enjoy her lyricism as she asks “how can these memories be so sweet, and other times only sting?” Lujan comes to Portland from the upper-left-most corner of rural Washington. She’s had bands before but the time of the pandemic created an opportunity for Lujan to do things differently. She moved to Portland, and saw the isolation of relocation and lockdown as a chance to really dig into her own songs. The trained piano player picked up a guitar.

Lujan’s songs concentrate on growing up, and figuring it out, and she  turns experience into a story to make the point. The natural singer and songwriter put together a band with Micah Hummel (drums) Sam Arnold (bass) and recorded at the Map Room in Portland with Dominik Schmidt producing.

Hannah Scott - Into Your Grief.

Taken from the forthcoming EP “Ancient Lights”, “Into Your Grief” is the new single from Surreybased contemporary folk artist Hannah Scott. The EP is a collection of old songs Hannah thought deserved to be dusted down and played to audiences once more. Into Your Grief was written towards the end of 2008 as her three year relationship was breaking down.

Hannah says, “I’ve often found myself too afraid to say how I really feel. As I’ve got older and realise the impact that not being fully open and honest has, I definitely see this as a weakness and it’s something I’m working on. Somehow expressing those feelings in lyrics is easier. My relationship had been on the rocks for a while and we hadn’t voiced it. I played my then partner the song and we both started crying and that was that! We are still good friends 15 years later.”

Ancient Lights takes its name from the house she grew up in, a Tudor building in Suffolk, named by her father because of its leaded light windows. These take centre stage in the EP artwork created by her mother. Hannah had the idea to name a record after the family home in her early twenties but she knew she’d have to wait until she was older in order to have some old songs to record so the title would make sense! Two close family bereavements in the space of a year as well as the period of quiet which the pandemic and lockdowns brought set Hannah on a path of reflection as she rediscovered some of her oldest material.

Jesse Hite - Just A Kid.

Heart-felt lyrics wrapped in a saucy bass-line, catchy chorus, and a head bobbing groove; with remnants of Gorillaz, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Arctic Monkeys, and The 1975.

This opening song for the upcoming EP Vol. 1 is really a look into getting older and fighting with the feelings of aging, depression, and anxiety. How have 30 years already past? I still feel like a kid. I am just a kid. I was always “the kid” in the local music scene. Always the youngest one on stage and still keeping up with the veterans. But now, that is no longer the case. I think everyone has this disconnect at some point in their life. As time goes on, our lives get busier and life seems to speed up day by day. We all want to feel young forever.

Jesse Hite is an American artist living in the French countryside as a musician, producer, and singer-songwriter. His experience exploring and living on the West Coast of America, travels through Asia and Europe, and time spent living in France has taken his lyrics and songwriting to a whole new level. He has combined those life experiences inside his home studio and molded them into a piece of art for all music lovers to enjoy. He shares his honest experiences through his intricate storytelling-like song style. His songs are groovy, atmospheric wonders with poppy hooks and deep stories.

BC Camplight - The Last Rotation Of Earth.

BC Camplight has just announced news of his new album, The Last Rotation Of Earth, out May 12th via Bella Union. To accompany the announcement, BC Camplight has shared a lyric video for the LP’s title track and first single. Is there a curse that says Brian ‘BC Camplight’ Christinzio cannot move forward without being knocked back? That the greatest material is born out of emotional trauma? Whilst making his new album, The Last Rotation Of Earth, Christinzio’s relationship with his fiancé crumbled after nine inseparable years.

The album follows this break-up amid long-term struggles with addiction and mental health. The outcome is an extraordinary record, with Christinzio describing it as “more cinematic, sophisticated and nuanced than anything I’ve done before.” He goes on to describe how the separation altered his creative focus and caused him to “scrap 95% of what I’d already recorded”, finishing The Last Rotation Of Earth in two months and making what he believes is his most vital album.

Still, Christinzio doesn’t see any of this as a story of redemption. “This is not a story of victory,” he says. “It is a document created in the shadow of incredible darkness. One from which the creator hadn't planned on escaping, and still doesn't. Hence the title of the album. It is the result of an illness that I've battled my whole life. It isn't something that the world has done to me. It's the world I live in and it's no one's fault.”

Mall Girl - I.You.She - Century Egg - Hannah Scott

Mall Girl - Bubbly Cool Drink.

‘Bubbly Cool Drink’, the new single from Norwegian art-pop outfit Mall Girl, represents an exciting new chapter for the buzzed-about band. A string of infectious singles released in 2020, including ‘My Sweet Mall Girl’ and the fierce ‘Bad Girl’, cemented the bands reputation as an act to watch in the alt-pop arena. Now they are gearing up to release their debut album in Spring 2022, via Norwegian label Jansen Records.

Members Iver Armand Tandsether, Hannah Veslemøy Narvesen, Eskild Myrvoll and Bethany Forseth-Reichberg were forced to get creative when the pandemic hit, side lining best-laid plans to flesh out some songs before heading into the studio together.

"Because of COVID regulations and the four of us living in two different cities, we changed the way we worked with the songs quite radically in the months leading up to the studio recording,” Narvesen says. "We’ve always been very oriented towards the live performance of the songs, including when we compose them together in our rehearsal space. That way of working has led to some challenges when recording, as you end up listening to the songs in a different manner and might figure out you should have done everything differently."

While some put their creative endeavours on hold, Mall Girl opted to try something different. “We actually ended up ‘remote composing’ big parts of the album, with everyone working from their own home studio and bouncing ideas back and forth,” Narvesen explains. "This was a very welcome change of workflow for us, and it led to us writing some songs which probably wouldn’t have turned out that way had we been together in the same room."

I.You.She - Sink.

Boston-based indie pop wunderkind I.You.She, AKA Aayushi Kumar, is gearing up for the release of a buoyant new song “sink!.” The song, produced by respected local Seattle musician Jake Crocker (her hometown), integrates irrepressibly catchy hooks with lyrics that illustrate the despair of a young person caught up in a sense of disillusionment with her life and an eventual realization that everyone is in the same boat.   Kumar exhibits a remarkable mastery of melody and lyricism in only her second single as a solo musical artist—she’s currently a freshman at the Berklee College of Music.  “Sink!” will be released digitally October 29.

Says Kumar: “I don’t believe in perfectionism but I really believed in this song and wanted to give it my all. In general, this person feels like their life is a mess and they feel a sense of emptiness.  To me the song is really about how struggle in life is inevitable. If I had to have one tagline for the song it would be ‘The grass is greener on the other side, but what if we were underground?’  I don't think this song is a negative one even though it may come off that way on a surface level. I think it's realistic and shows how struggling is inevitable and ok. We always think we're sinking but sometimes don't realize that everyone else is as well.”

I like to stay informed on the local artists from Seattle and Jake, the featured artist and producer of ‘sink!,’ was a Seattle-based musician who I really looked up to.  He was a dream collaborator, and after some email/phone exchanges we started the process of working on the current version of “sink!”. I’m a freshman at the Berklee College of Music, The journey has been a long one but I feel so proud of this song and am excited to introduce my sound to the world.

Century Egg - Moving On.

Century Egg is a band of escape artists with a focus on playing visceral punk rock. Today the Halifax, Nova Scotia-based quartet are sharing their new single, "Moving On" which makes up the first half of a double A-side single release, the second of which will follow next month. The new track is released via Forward Music Group.

Following previous spots opening for the likes of Lido Pimienta – a self-proclaimed fan of the band with Robert Drisdelle, guitarist in Century Egg producing a track on her Polaris Prize-winning album, La Papessa – Partner, Julie Doiron, and more, Century Egg will be performing at Toronto's Handlebar on November 14 and La Sala Rosa as part of M for Montreal (Mothland's stage) on November 19 to celebrate the release of these new tracks. This new single, "Moving On" further cements their inspirations taken from Asian pop and rock artists such as Faye Wong, Jun Togawa, Spitz, Cui Jain, Pu Shu, along with the driving post-punk rhythm section and blistering guitar work taken from The Stooges, Thin Lizzy, etc.

Hannah Scott - Drawn To Darkness (Album).

London-based independent artist Hannah Scott is fast cementing her place as one of the country’s most exciting new songwriters, with her emotive, personal songs and striking voice. Hot on the heels of her recent sync success which saw No Gravity open an episode of Grey’s Anatomy, she releases her Help Musicians-funded sophomore album, Drawn To Darkness.

Co-written and produced with long-standing creative partner Stefano Della Casa (Ultra Music Publishing), Drawn To Darkness expertly combines organic, live elements with electronic sounds. The two artists have struck a perfect balance between Hannah’s traditional songwriting craft and Stefano’s unique cinematic production.

Hannah draws much of the inspiration for her music from her affinity with Italy. A year living and working on an olive press in rural Tuscany in her late teens provided the backdrop to her early work and she has found her musical home with writer-producer and multi-instrumentalist Stefano, who she met in London but may well have met years earlier when passing through the train station in Italy he was working in!

Further highlights for the pair include opening for Madeleine Peyroux to an audience of 2000 at Edinburgh’s Festival Theatre and travelling across Ireland with Paddy Casey to open shows for him in Dublin and in a tiny Irish speaking village near Galway! Their music has also been featured on BBC Radio 2 including a live session with Dermot O’Leary, BBC 6 Music, BBC Introducing, The Guardian, MOJO and Clash Magazine.

Charlotte Jacobs - Hannah Scott - Ladderman - Adwaith + Massimo Silverio - Francis Lung - Petey and Miya Folick

Charlotte Jacobs - Other Half.

Charlotte Jacobs is sharing the music video for her new single, "Other Half". Charlotte describes the track as, "I think this song is about being close to another half- which can be another person, but I think also another part of yourself, and I think the images used in the video translates the music really well."

Brooklyn-by-Belgium vocalist Charlotte Jacobs transposes her world into music. Sights, movements, sounds and places coalesce, reflecting the artist’s surroundings in lush electronic unison. Born and raised in her parents’ art gallery in a small village in the Flanders countryside, Jacobs’ dense avant-pop arrangements pull influence from visual art, poetry and contemporary dance, converting one artistic medium into another. After spending several years performing in Belgian electronic trio SEIREN while studying jazz vocals at The Royal Conservatory of Ghent, Jacobs began writing her own material, experimenting with vocal manipulation and unorthodox song structure.

Despite performing with multiple collaborative projects, as well as composing video game and film scores, it wasn’t until Charlotte Jacobs relocated to Brooklyn in 2017 when she began to thoroughly find her voice. It was there she embarked on a new eccentric musical exploration, collaborating with New York’s cohort of producers and artists while delving into the textures, shapes and colors of her own vocals in her Crown Heights bedroom. 2019 saw the release of Jacobs’ debut Fishtale EP, a lurid collection of forward-thinking pop tied together with the help of producer and engineer Zubin Hensler (Half Waif, The Westerlies, Hannah Epperson). Influenced by jazz vocalist Betty Carter, Bjork’s vocal-centered Medulla and Tirzah’s wheezing pop loops, Charlotte Jacobs’ music upends expectations, subverting tradition through playful fusions of style and genre.

Ladderman - The Huntress Obeyed.

It is pure melancholy that is transformed here into a bittersweet fairy talesque Brothers Grimm style. With 'The Huntress Obeyed' a new indie band from Lucerne enters the music scene: Laddermen.

Singer and guitarist Leopold Oakes hails from Texas, where he played in several indie and hardcore bands which taught him to express emotion through music.
In 2019, Oakes left Texas to redefine the concept of home, as well as his musical work, in Switzerland. Together with musicians from previous projects, they created «Laddermen», a construct of melancholic, dark and haunting rock music.
'The Huntress Obeyed' is a spherical post-punk song about cocaine addiction in Austin, Texas and the darker side of the excessive party scene there.

Laddermen will release their debut album later this year. Their haunting songwriting and deep dramaturgy, for which they draw inspiration from English bands, should splash the indie scene with another palette of color.

Adwaith + Massimo Silverio - Nijo (Yn y Swn).

This week sees the launch of an international partnership between the National Eisteddfod and the SUNS Europe Festival – the European Festival of Performing Arts in European Minority Languages. The partnership is a celebration of music rising above linguistic borders, with the first project combining Welsh with Friulian, the indigenous language of Friuli, northern Italy.

This first collaboration features Welsh band, Adwaith and Friulian musician, Massimo Silverio, with the song, Yn y Sŵn (Nijo), released on 26 February.
Two versions of the song have been recorded, a Welsh and bilingual version in Welsh and Fruilian, and both Adwaith and Massimo Silverio feature on both versions. The word ‘Nijo’, the title of the bilingual version, is an ancient Friulian word meaning ‘Nowhere’, and when writing the words, Massimo Silverio thought of all the feelings, words and language which ultimately reach ‘Nijo’.

Welcoming the partnership with the SUNS Europe Festival, National Eisteddfod Chief Executive, Betsan Moses, said, “This partnership between the Eisteddfod and the SUNS Europe festival shows how we can successfully collaborate with other countries and cultures across the world.

“I’m confident that the fact that we’re both festivals celebrating minority languages binds us together, and I hope this is a solid foundation for us to further develop this relationship and other projects in the future. We’ve created something quite magical with this first collaboration, and I’m sure everyone will agree that the song – be that the Welsh or bilingual version – is amazing.”

Leo Virgili, SUNS Europe’s Artistic Director, added, “I want to thank the Eisteddfod for this brilliant idea. Collaborating with Wales at this specific time has even more importance for us. We strongly believe in a Europe that goes beyond Brexit, banks, and state agreements. A real Europe able to express proudly its diversity, sharing the power of indigenous languages and cultures.”

Francis Lung - Bad Hair Day.

Francis Lung (ex-WU LYF) is announcing his second album, Miracle (out June 18 via Memphis Industries) with this first single, "Bad Hair Day".

This is the second album from Tom McClung – the real name behind the Francis Lung moniker – following his 2019 debut, A Dream Is U, which scored support at the Times, MOJO, Uncut, NPR, Best Fit, Paste Magazine and more. He recorded the new album at the idyllic Giant Wafer studios in rural Wales before self-producing in collaboration with Brendan Williams (Dutch Uncles, Kiran Leonard) and Robin Koob (who co-arranged and performed strings).

The opportunity to self-produce and maintain that creative control is something that somewhat plays into the album's deeply personal themes which represent a period of introspection for Francis as he reflected on his own struggles with mental health, substance (ab)use and, relationships.

There's something disarming about the breezy, sunny art-rock and power-pop, but underneath that, Miracle is a cathartic process for Lung which finds him tackling these demons in a brutally honest and open manner; the album is intended to celebrate the healing process whilst being aware of and accepting of the darker sides of the human psyche. This first single, "Bad Hair Day" demonstrates Francis' step-up in widescreen, kitchen sink power-pop, a sound not too far from Pet Sounds and Brill Building pop.

Petey and Miya Folick - Haircut.

The Los Angeles-based artist Petey and Miya Folick released a new single “Haircut” via Terrible Records. The duo co-wrote the song and recorded it together in Miya’s apartment, and also collaborated on an official video for the track in Petey’s backyard featuring Folick shaving her own head.

“Haircut is a very fun song I wrote with my friend Miya about getting an extreme haircut and not wanting to talk about it,” explains Petey. “I hope you like it. it was really fun to make. We recorded it in Miya’s apartment.”

“Petey started this song and showed it to me. I immediately related. Just scroll through my feed to see a history of emotional haircuts. I really love the way it turned out. And it’s one of my mom’s favorite songs that I’ve made!” said Miya Folick about the track.

After signing to the Los Angeles-based Terrible Records (Claud, Empress Of, The Voidz) in late 2019, Petey has released 3 EP’s (Car Practice, High Life From The Bottle on the Beach, and Checkin Up on Buds) as well as 2 singles. Petey and Miya Folick previously collaborated on his single “California - Prius Edition” which appeared on High Life From The Bottle On The Beach. UPROXX said, Petey is a unique creature, combining elements of emo, electronic, and folk music into a sound that is unmistakably Petey.

Leahy - Good Water.

If you think you know what the music of Canadian band Leahy sounds like, it’s time to think again.

Their new album Good Water brings the five women members of the group – Leahy sisters Julie, Erin, Maria, Siobheann, and Denise – freshly to the fore, in singing and especially songwriting, along with brother Frank on drums. As the songs on Good Water took shape, a new edge to their sound began to emerge with the addition of electric guitars which – as played by new band member Xavier Leahy (as well as guest musicians on the recording Bill Dillon, Nick Johnson and Adam Agati) – spurred the band on to explore the outer edges of their traditional/Celtic/folk/roots musical origins, pushing well beyond that footing.

In another new development, Good Water finds the band working under the sharp, exacting hand of Grammy-winning Canadian producer David Bottrill (Peter Gabriel, Rush, Smashing Pumpkins, Afro Celt Sound System), who brought an additional new intensity to the sonic palette. The result is a wide-ranging collection of songs that newly ignite the many musical influences that motivate the band members – from rock to choral, country to classical, and beyond.

As an example, the first single and title track, “Good Water,” is an entirely contemporary song of hope; a timely message to a generation of “people called to be together” in a world stricken by anxiety, turmoil, and uncertainty. Although it expresses a universal sentiment, it’s as relevant a song as you’ll hear in 2020. With “Good Water,” Leahy have caught the eternal in the commonplace, and captured a feeling we can all recognize now, across the globe.

Hannah Scott - Untangling.

London-Based independent artist Hannah Scott is fast cementing her place as one of the country’s most exciting new songwriters, with her emotive songs and striking voice. Untangling, the third single from her forthcoming album, showcases her powerful and personal storytelling.

The song expresses the dismantling of a life and home following the breakdown of a long term relationship. Co-written and produced with long-standing creative partner Stefano Della Casa (Ultra Music Publishing), Untangling expertly combines organic, live elements with electronic sounds.

The two artists have struck a perfect balance between Hannah’s traditional songwriting craft and Stefano’s unique cinematic production. Recent highlights for the pair include being awarded funding by Help Musicians UK to go towards the production of the album, opening for Madeleine Peyroux to an audience of 2000 at
Edinburgh’s Festival Theatre and travelling across Ireland with Paddy Casey to open shows for him in Dublin and in a tiny Irish speaking village near Galway!

Their music has also been featured on BBC Radio 2 including a live session with Dermot O’Leary, BBC 6 Music, BB Introducing, The Guardian, MOJO and Clash Magazine.

Tamara Willamson - Swim / Flashback.

Swim is single number four this year and is a ten minute sound journey. Collaborating this month with award winning HBO and Canadian Screen film composer Tom Third. This single is not a single but rather an ocean of self adulation. And why not...

Dubbed the Godmother of indie Tamara Williamson has opened for Oasis,
been told she is Feists inspiration and beat Bjork in the listings of best show in NOW mag.

Tamara Williamson has been a mainstay in the Toronto music scene since the early 90s. She released 3 albums with her band Mrs.Torrance on the major label BMG. Mrs.Torrance toured extensively in Canada opening for such acts as Oasis, The Beautiful South, Talk Talk, and Jewel. They toured with bands such as The Crash Test Dummies, The Pursuit of Happiness, The Waltons, The Rheostatics, Hayden and King Cobb Steelie. Their single Mrs. Torrance broke into radio with their single and were mainstays in Much Music rotation.

In 2000 Mrs. Torrance disbanded and Tamara started a solo career. Her music is ethereal and sensitive. Using many effects and layers she was one of the first artists to start live looping and was known for her experimentation using both vocal effects and looping. Tamara was featured in The New Music Show in 2000 and her first independent single went into rotation on MUCH Music.

Her first recording Nightmare on Queen Street was very well received and Tamara played at many folk festivals such as Hillside, The Regina Folk Festival, and NXNE. She also went down the West Coast touring with Bob Wiseman and Matt Nathensen.

Kill The Giants - Three Word Phrase.

St Albans's genre bending collective Kill The Giants are back with their third LP - Three Word Phrase.

The album has been recorded in response to the extreme pressures put on society and individuals casued by the continuing lockdown restrictions imposed by the government. Freedom and democracy have been surrendered to an increasingly authoritarian government bent on creating mass fear in the population so that they can be controlled. The band are focusing on celebrating and cherishing our freedoms.

One of these tools of control is the repetitive use of a Three Word Phrase devised by behavioural scientists on the SAGE committee these are an effective tool of mind control and the likes of Adolus Huxley (whom the band sample) warned about this over 70 years ago. CONTROL THE VIRUS, STAY AT HOME, HANDS FACE SPACE - to name a few.

The band also sample Charlie Chaplin (from his famous speech in The Great Dictator), Geroge Orwell, Donald Trump & even Boris Johnson.

KTG frontman Mark Christopher Lee has had a traumatic time during lockdown and is wanting to raise awareness of all those with mental health issues who have suffered as a result of continuing lockdown with treatments being cancelled and suicides increasing.

Palberta - Before I Got Here.

NYC punk trio, Palberta are set to release their new album, Palberta5000 on January 22, 2021. They have a new single and video, ‘Before I Got Here’ – it’s out via Wharf Cat Records (Bambara, Public Practice).

I'm not sure if you're aware of the band already but if not, they're an NYC-based trio who've developed a combination of a really devoted cult audience and critical acclaim over the last few years in the US, earning comparisons to some of the legends of left-field music like Captain Beefheart (Rolling Stone), ESG (Pitchfork), CAN and Yoko Ono (FADER), and Pitchfork called their last LP, 2018's Roach Going Down "a leap to another level...[that] suggests even higher peaks to come."

Their new LP really delivers on the promise that their last album's direction implied, upping the production and reconciling their sound with more traditional pop forms while sacrificing absolutely none of the Palberta-ness that has endeared them to people over their catalog to date. The band opened for Bikini Kill on some of their US dates last year and were supposed to tour the UK and Europe for the first time earlier this year before COVID hit – hopefully, these dates will now come next year.
