Realmonte - Lala Salama - The New Pornographers - Ashley Monroe - Alys North - The Clockworks

Realmonte - Go Go Go.

With their new single “Go Go Go,” Realmonte from the canton of Basel-Landschaft in Switzerland invite you on a musical excursion that stylishly blends past and present. The band has created a captivating earworm that not only gets stuck in your head instantly but also makes your heart beat faster.

Over the past years, Realmonte have built up a solid fanbase through countless live performances. When they’re not writing their own songs like “Go Go Go,” they enjoy taking on current hits and reinterpreting them. They run these songs through a retro filter—refined, soulful, jazzy, with a touch of swing and a bluesy note. The result is a charming mix that revives the spirit of the 1950s and 60s without losing its modern edge.

With their own track “Go Go Go,” the band stays true to this style while delivering an energetic piece that combines vintage aesthetics with a contemporary pop attitude. The musicians certainly have the skill. Among those in Realmonte is Ramaon Vaca, a bassist who has played with countless bands and is still well known from the Basel indie pop heroes of the 1990s, Phébus.

Lala Salama - Muistot haalistuu.

Helsinki-based Lala Salama released their new single Muistot haalistuu on Friday, March 27, marking the band’s first new song since their acclaimed debut album Miltähän me näytettäis yhdessä. The single also opens a new chapter for the band’s line-up, with Elli Holmström, known from Drug Store Raid, joining as bassist.

Muistot haalistuu brings out a more wistful and atmospheric side of Lala Salama. Moving between dream pop, shoegaze and indie rock, the song centres on the pain of letting go, memories that slowly begin to fade, and the feeling that when something ends, something new may also begin to take shape.

“We’re super excited about this new phase and about Elli being part of it. This song is maybe a kind of in-between point, and it’s really from here that we start properly building the new Lala Salama,” says guitarist and singer Rosa Jules.

“The song was born in a space of transition. It captures the feeling of leaving something meaningful behind: a person, a moment, or an entire phase of life. At the same time, it reminds us that even when something disappears, new possibilities begin to open up.”

The New Pornographers - The Former Site Of (Album).

A woman is trapped on a cruise ship. A preacher decides to go down with his town. A man at the florist finds himself lost in the meaning of the arrangement. These and other people at personal and societal extremes are the subjects of ten timely, timeless short stories collected as meticulously crafted pop songs by The New Pornographers on their new album, The Former Site Of, released yesterday March 27 on Merge Records.

The album, like Continue as a Guest, finds The New Pornographers—bandleader A.C. Newman, Neko Case, Kathryn Calder, John Collins, and Todd Fancey expanding their already rich catalog in surprising fashion. Joined for this album by legendary session drummer Charley Drayton (Divinyls, The Cult, The Rolling Stones, Fiona Apple), the space contained in a New Pornographer’s song has never been this clearly articulated or generously textured, giving a distinct pulse to the characters whose lives spill out in Newman’s tender, evocative lyrics.

The Former Site Of adds new depth to the sound Newman shook loose through building and recording in a home studio, fine-tuning the band’s creative process far beyond the lockdown-era necessities of remote collaboration. “Having time in my studio really opened things up,” he explains. “I don’t like wasting my bandmates’ time, and always felt guilty when I’d give them a song, ask them to do something, then completely change the song and ask them to do it again. Now I can get the skeleton of a song together first—just a couple of elements, the key feeling, really as little as possible—before bringing it to the band and running from there.”

Two albums into this shift, The New Pornographers are creating universes of intricately textured sound and narrative detail, every layer keyed to reveal an unexpected new facet. As on Continue as a Guest, one of the more readily apparent layers is the way a song forms itself around a featured instrument. On The Former Site Of, it’s a mandolin which, in Carl Newman’s hands, lends lead single “Votive” its sense of acceleration as it builds from the atmospheric sweep of its synth and keyboard opening to a classic, wide-open jam.

Ashley Monroe - Dear Nashville (Album).

Ashley Monroe has spent nearly 25 years building a life and career in Nashville, writing songs, making records, and earning the respect of her peers. But even with all she’s accomplished, Monroe has often felt invisible in the very town she’s devoted her life to. On her surprise-released album Dear Nashville, she puts those conflicted feelings front and center.

“I had a writing session on the books with Luke and I’d woken up that morning with a storm in my heart, like, ‘My gosh, have I done this all for nothing?’” she says. “When I got to Luke's house that day, I knew I had to address my hurt feelings and get it out of my system. I told him the idea of ‘I Hate Nashville’ and he loved it. That song put everything into motion. We felt the window of all the muses open, and decided that I’m going to say what I feel and make it a whole project.”

Those emotions come through immediately in “I Hate Nashville,” a title that masks her deep love for the genre. “Country music is the reason I’m alive,” she declares.

“This album started with Ashley bringing the title, "I Hate Nashville," to the room one day,” Luke Laird explains. “The music is what brings most songwriters to this town – but when it comes to the business, that’s when people can get burned out.  So Ashley and I talked that day about our love for country music, the songs and the people – we had such a good day talking about all of our favorite Nashville memories and what led us both here. I love how honest Ashley is in her writing and just how pure her singing is. She really is the triple threat: artist, songwriter, and producer. We had so much fun making this record. No rules… just what felt right.”

Alys North - Replace You With.

Alys North is an emerging artist we think you’ll genuinely enjoy. Alys new single is called Replace You With and was released yesterday. Dynamic, raw, and fiercely authentic, Alys North brings a storyteller’s fire to every stage she steps onto. Raised in a small Northern Territory town, before honing her skills and passion in Brisbane, Australia, Alys can now be found carving out her sound in venues and streets around Cardiff and the UK.

Known for lyrics that land with striking honesty—the kind that stops new listeners in their tracks, Alys’ songwriting is unfiltered and unafraid, offering a powerful mix of vulnerability and grit. For her growing audience, each performance is more than a show—it’s an invitation into the real, unpolished life of an artist who refuses to hold back.

Alys blends heartfelt songwriting with a raw, authentic vocal style, creating music that connects immediately. In the build up to today's release, this track has been played on stations in both the UK and Oceanic scenes, with early charting on Amazing Radio (up to #27 from initial entry at #32!), as well as 'B' Playlisting on Amazing Radio UK, and a fantastic debut and reception through BBC Introducing, which has led to placement on the BBC Radio Wales A List!

The Clockworks - The Entertainment (Album).

Galway via London fourpiece The Clockworks have this weekend shared their second full-length musical project with brand-new album ‘The Entertainment’ out now via V2 Records. The Clockworks introduced themselves and their cinematic sound with debut album ‘Exit Strategy’ in 2023 and their self-titled EP ‘The Clockworks’ in 2022, gaining acclaim from the likes of BBC 6Music and BBC Radio 1. With a sonic palate that pulls from seemingly disparate regions of the musical landscape, namechecking Daft Punk next to Pixies, next to Ennio Morricone, they are also influenced through their passion for film and literature. Lyrically, singer and lyricist James McGregor writes with purpose, integrity and emotion, balancing light with darkness and finding poetic intrigue in everyday life.

New album ‘The Entertainment’ was largely written and recorded in isolation and is a project that looks to loneliness and connection in its exploration of life in the modern world. The framework for the album came intuitively and fast, carving out a sonic landscape built around tension and release; moments of darkness juxtaposed with glimmers of light. A raft of cinematic inspirations were on the moodboard - Bladerunner, Drive, the works of Fellini – alongside cover art inspired by an old LIFE Magazine cover featuring the first theatre to show 3D films. Their second record is not so much a concept album, but more a ‘work of friction’. The band say;

“The whole album seems to be filled with push and pull, black and white. There is such a conflict and contrast between everything. Even just recording the music, we did it all separately and then put it back together.” “We had the idea to record in a way that was in keeping with what the album is talking about, and to try and do it in isolation completely. We wanted creatively to turn in and see what we could do, so then when we did bring it all together, the parts had all this tension to play with.”

“We had this really strong identity for the album from the start, which meant that we could then spend so much time on the details. It’s like if you have all the beats of the film, then you can tell the actors to go and improv between them.”

The record showcases the band’s signature blend of Americana, country, and indie folk, delivering heartfelt narratives that explore themes of resilience, longing, and human connection.

Since forming they have shared stages with Jolie Holland, Herman Dune, Ronnie Lane’s Slim Chance, Nina Nastasia and many more. File in your record collection somewhere between Low, Mazzy Star, Songs Ohia and next to an old, yellowing, red-wine-stained copy of Frank Stanford poems.

Mercury’s Antennae - Among the Black Trees (Album).

Seven years after the release of their celestial The Moon Viewing Garden EP (Sett Records, 2018), Mercury’s Antennae have re-emerged with their latest offering of sonic lullabies, Among the Black Trees. Nine existential tales inhabit a ghostly realm of reflection, rebirth and reconciliation, overlaying dense bass, swirling ghostly guitars, and atmospheric electronics, all melding with lustrous and soaring vocal melodies.

Currently based between Geneva, Switzerland and Portland, Oregon in the US, the trio comprises Dru Allen (This Ascension), Cindy Coulter (This Ascension, Faith and the Muse), and Erick r. Scheid (The Palace of Tears). Their sound incorporates influences from shoegaze pop, ethereal darkwave, and unadorned acoustic beauty, often compared to ‘90s-era Projekt artists, while also drawing inspiration from modern ambient electronica.

Through the iconic Projekt label, Mercury’s Antennae released their debut album, A Waking Ghost Inside (2014); followed by The Guides EP (2015); and sophomore album, Beneath the Serene (2016). Their debut for Sett Records was 2018’s The Moon Viewing Garden EP, followed by appearances at prestigious festivals Wave-Gotik-Treffen in Leipzig, Germany; and Tomorrow’s Ghosts Festival in Whitby, England. It was also during this period (c.2018) that songs for Among the Black Trees were conceived, prior to a hiatus as members went on to explore other projects. Reflecting on the themes explored by the new album, guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Erick r. Scheid says:

“Among the Black Trees is almost concept album in a way. Themes of love, death, rebirth, reconciliation and the imagined landscape of the unseen world are all intentionally, sonically and emotionally fed into the music. And Dru’s lyrical contribution truly adds a vastness of beauty and life to the music. Her lyrics on this album are my favorite; literally every song. Cindy was very receptive and active in writing this music alongside of me. While I had the demos, her ideas and creative insights held the music to be very truthful and not to be too overindulgent. Her openness to explore a deeper bass sound with tunings makes this album truly different from all our previous work. Both Dru and Cindy have had a huge impact on this work, and it’s the first album where we all three equally wrote the music together.”

The album will be available digitally as well as in limited-edition colored vinyl pressings (150 copies each of yellow & violet editions). Lead Pony - Lala Salama - The Drive-By Truckers - The Broken Islands

Lead Pony - Vultures.

San Diego psych/blues rock group Lead Pony release their new single, “Vultures” this week, the title-track to their upcoming debut full-length, which they have announced for a July 14 release.

Discussing the single, guitarist Jesse Hofstee noted, "’Vultures’ is a story about someone leaving their hometown to go to the city and 'make it big'. It’s about change, taking risks and finding yourself, but also a cautionary tale about the vultures that will take advantage of people that are finding themselves, and send them in the wrong direction. It was one of the first songs we wrote for the record that started to lay the groundwork for the sound and idea of this being a record about the city.”

Lead Pony emerged in 2017, releasing their debut EP, Eclipse, and quickly followed with the appropriately titled, double-single, Two Love Songs in 2018. The band toured relentlessly, and had successes getting music placements, including on the TV show “Shameless”. In 2019 the they decided to take a break to pursue other projects and creative endeavors.

In the summer of 2022, the addition of bassist Seancarlo Ohlin sparked desire to make a full-length record. Writing shifted into overdrive with a goal of creating an environment where these songs could really live. In this case, it’s Lead Pony’s imagined version of ‘70s New York City. Various stories weave through Vultures with a diverse range of sounds and styles all glued together with the voices and production that they were able to achieve with producer Trevor Spencer (Fleet Foxes, Father John Misty, Beach House).

Lala Salama - Summer Love.

Lala Salama, the newest signing to the All That Plazz record label, is joining the summer hit parade with the release of the irresistibly cheerful single Summer Love. The new single, which is being released today May 17, doesn’t pale sonically alongside the world’s biggest contemporary indie bands at all thanks to mastering by American Grammy nominee Ryan Schwabe.

Lala Salama comprises singer and guitarist Rosa Jules together with drummer Aliisa Keränen and bassist Santeri Hytönen, who also play with the band Bad Sauna. Having gained a following in Helsinki’s punk and indie circles, Lala Salama has previously self-published one EP and a single. With their new single, the band is readier than ever.

Summer Love is a wistful but also empowering and rollicking love song that yearns for a summer love in the style of a modern and urban hit. Musical points of comparison can be found in dreampop and Scandinavian nostalgia pop, but also strongly in shoegaze, indie rock and even punk. Bands like Regina, Beach House, DIIV and Wet Leg come to mind. However, perhaps no one has previously been able to combine Finnish melancholy and jagged romanticism with indie rock quite like Lala Salama does.

The strongly feminist DIY band formed during the pandemic, when Hytönen and Keränen fell in love with the demo tapes of singer and songwriter Rosa Jules. The trio bonded immediately, and Lala Salama became a real band. Summer Love will no doubt grab the attention of not only the local punk gang in Kallio but also wider indie circles, both in Finland and around the world.

The Drive-By Truckers - Goode’s Field Road (Remixed / Remastered).

The Drive-By Truckers will release The Complete Dirty South on June 16, 2023, via New West Records. Originally released in 2004 to wide acclaim, The Dirty South explores the mean highways and dark hollers of what the band called the “Mythological South,” a tornado-ravaged landscape populated by bootleggers and small-time criminals, everyday folks just scraping to get by and looming icons like Sam Phillips, John Henry, and Sheriff Buford Pusser. The album is a reckoning with the place they call home. Pitchfork sang its praises: “The Drive-By Truckers’ Southern rock always sounds homemade, and like liquor from a still, it’s extremely potent… [They] find the connections between these larger-than-life figures and the life-size experiences that shaped them. For them, the South is a stretch of highway where many have died, an ordinary place made extraordinary by human tragedies. The Dirty South is their homemade roadside memorial.”

The ground-breaking album has been re-sequenced and expanded to the band’s initially proposed 17-song track listing. It includes 3 bonus tracks that were left off the original album, and 4 remixed songs featuring newly updated vocals. Also included is a 32-page book featuring original and new liner notes written by the Drive-By Truckers’ Patterson Hood, track-by-track descriptions written by Hood, Mike Cooley and Jason Isbell, never-before-seen photos, and updated artwork by the late Wes Freed. The Complete Dirty South was remastered by the legendary Greg Calbi. This definitive version of the album will finally be available as the band intended.

This week, the Drive-By Truckers shared the remixed “Goode’s Field Road” featuring new vocals from Patterson Hood. He says, “I wrote the song as part of the album as we originally envisioned it as a kind of connective tissue between the state line gang narrative and the more personal songs on the album. We recorded it in Athens during the fall of 2003. When it ended up being dropped from the sequence, it was later released on The Fine Print collection of outtakes and oddities. This version features a new vocal and mix (and is quite a different version from the one on Brighter Than Creation’s Dark). It has always been one of my favorite songs that I have ever written.”

The Broken Islands - Tempest.

Following on from the release of their highly-acclaimed sophomore LP 'Masquerade’ in 2020, Canadian outfit The Broken Islands are now ready to break their three-year silence with the release of their euphoric new single ‘Tempest’. Lifted from their eagerly-awaited third studio album, which is set to arrive later this year, ‘Tempest’ sees them bring back more of that raw and driven post-punk-meets-shoegaze aesthetic they have developed for themselves over the years. Brimming with broad and immersive textures from start to finish, they are returning with one of their most impactful efforts to date here.

To celebrate the release of their new single, The Broken Islands will also be performing a string of shows across the UK throughout May, including a slot at this year’s Great Escape Festival. The Broken Islands are a Vancouver-based quintet who meld elements of ambient pop, shoegaze, post-rock, post-punk, trip-hop and dark wave to create their own distinct sound. With crashing guitars and delicate sounding keyboards weaving around swooning, siren-like vocals, the band’s songs can sound at times like an otherworldly sonic experience while still being packed with emotion and moments of tenderness.

Their well-received debut album ‘Wars’ was released in the autumn of 2017, with the follow-up LP ‘Masquerade’ released in February 2020. The Broken Islands third album is slated for release in late 2023, with full details emerging soon. Like its predecessors, the new untitled third album has been produced and mixed by Dave ‘Rave’ Ogilvie, who is best known for his work with industrial music titans such as Nine Inch Nails, Ministry and Skinny Puppy and was the perfect choice to harness the many influences that constitute the sound of The Broken Islands.
