Katherine Perkins - Swiftly.

“Swiftly” is kind of a cinematic lullaby for the end of an era — it’s last call at the bar of our youth. It's the final single ahead of the album 'Helpless Love' which is due September 25.

Perkins' first solo record, Being Younger, was primarily an album about friendships and getting older; with Helpless Love, Perkins says she was trying to take a step back and look at humans with a wider lens, "because so much of what we do is so baffling to me."

There are elements of the Americana worlds of Lucinda Williams and Bonnie Raitt, flashes of bizarro humor in the galaxy of Aldous Harding, and something higher-octane that’s hard to put a finger on. For this, her second full-length album, Perkins wrote the songs on piano and recorded them on Wurlitzer. Her band brought a host of musical upbringings and influences to the table, from indie-pop to folk to soul to jazz, and the result is an unplaceable hybrid that is both fresh and deeply familiar.

Brooke Annibale - Bolder Font (Album).

Indie singer/songwriter Brooke Annibale has released her new album Bolder Font. Her first collection of brand new music in four years, Bolder Font finds the Rhode Island-based, Pittsburgh-native at the precipice of a creative rejuvenation as she rediscovers her self-worth after a series of disheartening and unexpected setbacks. Bolder Font also marks the first time she dove into full creative control of an entire album, including writing, recording, producing, editing, and mixing entirely on her own.

"I learned so much making this record,” stated Brooke. “Not just about recording, producing and mixing, but I learned something quite extraordinary about life in general. The process is the fulfillment. The fulfillment is not the likes, the streams, or any of the visible successes. It’s the quiet moments of making the thing, and making it with my hands, my mind and my whole heart. The release is the celebration of that process."

Capturing the album’s emotional centerpiece is the recently released “Try Again,” which finds Brooke turning the lens on her own complicated relationship with music: the thing that has always healed her is also the thing that has wounded her. The title track “Bolder Font” wrestles with the album’s underlying theme of self-worth and the gap between who we are and the identities that have been placed on us. V.V. Lightbody - Two Swans.

Today Chicago songwriter and multi-instrumentalist V.V. Lightbody is sharing "Two Swans." It's the final advance single from her new LP Period Piece and it comes with a video directed by Robert Salazar. 

Quote from V.V.: Anywhere I saw two swans, it felt like a comforting sign from the universe that I was doing something right. I eventually began to question their cosmic potency when I started seeing them too often and remembered that swans are usually portrayed in pairs. “Two Swans” critiques our society’s tendency towards “magical thinking” while also confessing my curiosity and delight in divinatory practices. I feel like this song feels deeply Chicago and combines many of my musical influences - angular guitars, mixed meter chorus, and raging farfisa. Cate Le Bon, but in a cornfield.  

Vivian has long been an in demand collaborator whatever instrument she's on (flute, guitar, vocals, etc), and the fact that she's sought out by folks as diverse as art-rock group FINOM, International Anthem-signed Panamanian drummer Daniel Villarreal, and Harry Styles indicates how highly regarded and diverse her musicianship is. Her collaborators are largely a who's who of the thriving Chicago indie and new jazz scenes, and her own project has always been a place for her to explore songs that cache intense feelings under self-effacing midwestern humor, breezy Brazilian-influenced guitar picking, and gauzy arrangements with sneakily complex moments. "Cate Le Bon in a cornfield or Gal Costa mowing the lawn" as her bio puts it.

Night Teacher - St. Augustine.

Night Teacher has shared a new single produced by and featuring Allen Tate of San Fermin. Brooding and sultry, “St. Augustine” is an introspective ode to the complexity of love, as songwriter Lilly Bechtel’s vocals delicately braid into Tate’s moody baritone. 

Songwriter Lilly Bechtel shares: St. Augustine is about love in its many forms and the tough work of caring deeply for something without holding on so tightly that it doesn’t have room to change. It is about letting go of preconceived ideas of what love looks like, and the painful paradox that any ‘great’ or ‘lasting’ love is ultimately about having the courage to watch that person leave. The Morning Line - Spellbound.

With a new album announced for release next month, veteran Northern California indie rockers The Morning Line and Big Stir Records bring you the second single to preview the record. “Spellbound,” with its textured guitars and plaintively melodic vocals, is a moody but lovely change of pace from “Anhedonia,” the band's previous indie hit single, and together they hint at the stylistic depth the band displays on the new album Stars. The single is released this weekend (three weeks ahead of the release of the full-length record's street date).

Frontman Stephen Smith reveals the intention behind the track. “It's about someone re-entering the world, after a period of loneliness, upset, or treatment.” He goes on to point out some details that listeners, whether hearing the song for the first time now or when its original version appeared on the band's 2007 debut album Stay My Satellite, might overlook: “One word people often miss when listening to it is 'Darien,' the Connecticut town. The song was featured on the soundtrack of the 2012 film Just Like Being There, a documentary about the makers of rock show posters. It is the only The Morning Line song with horns – a trumpet part that leads the song to its end. It’s anthemic and earnest.” 

With dense lyrical and musical touches like this, the song still packs a visceral and emotional punch as its layers ebb and flow. It's another side of The Morning Line's fascinating take on guitar pop and just one of 21 examples on display on Stars, a record that's rapidly emerging as an essential event on 2026's indie rock calendar.

Ungus Ungus Ungus - The Fun House (Album).

Musical contortionists Ungus Ungus Ungus return to bending boundaries with more of their signature mind-tickling tracks on their seventh studio album 'The Fun House', out yesterday August 28th.

With six full-length albums under their belt and having taken the stage at an array of internationally regarded festivals, including Woodford Folk, Port Fairy Folk and Rainbow Serpent, Ungus Ungus Ungus are back with an electrifying album that promises to deliver an unpredictable and enlivening experience, at times intentionally disorienting in its stylistic turns but always staying on track to a good time - much like the fairground ride from which the album takes its name.

With players based across three states, the Naarm/Melbourne-centred band returns with their shapeshifting, dancefloor-friendly sound. Conceptually, the album explores foundational dimensions of life together with its assorted peaks, valleys and contrasting flavours. Bandleader Max Schollar-Root says of the album: “As a band that plays fast and loose with genre, we have held nothing back stylistically, taking the listener on a journey from our signature circus party freak folk through psychedelic dub, funky hip-hop, electro swing, drum and bass, and ambient spaciousness.”

The album opens with ‘Funlerable’, a driving, moody track featuring circus organs and haunting vocals that speak to the duality of joy and vulnerability as an oscillating feature of life. ‘Poltergeist’ follows with a theatrical lament to lost love that builds from a slow cabaret feel to an uptempo frenzy. ‘Dr Quiet’ slows down the pace, giving way to atmospheric dub and sensuous, leisurely horns, setting the scene for the conceptual funk odyssey of ‘Wishes Three’, a foray into the foundations of where food comes from through deep grooves, group vocals and character-driven lyrics.

Part Time Signals - Green Light.

'Green Light' is the first single from 'Part Time Signals’ upcoming album 'Duck’s Back, Baby'. Placed as the opening track to their new album, Green Light symbolises the urge to get moving after remaining stagnant for quite some time. It’s like checking your watch and feeling like time is standing still but taking comfort in the knowledge that a green light will eventually shine. The song features layers of warbly guitars and keyboards, vocals drenched in spring reverb, luscious harmonies and crisp saturated drums. 

The band self-recorded Green Light at Giant Wafer Studios, and it features additional instrumentation from Stephen Black (flute & clarinet), Rhodri Brooks (pedal steel) and David Newington (vibraphone). Duck’s Back, Baby is the brand new album from Part Time Signals and the follow-up to their debut album Another Day In Paradise and EP The Window. It was self-recorded over an intensive five days at Giant Wafer Studios in Mid Wales, with subsequent additional recordings made at their rehearsal space and homes.
                 
The band say, “We’ve been quietly chipping away at this album for a few years, assembling it piece by piece since the initial studio session. In its essence it’s a collection of songs that reflect some of the many aspects of the human condition, and listening from start to finish there are plenty of dots to be connected.”
                       
With the main recording session being the band’s first time recording in a professional studio together, they explored the extensive instrumentation and equipment at hand to create different textures and atmospheres, further developing their sound. During subsequent sessions back in Cardiff, the band recorded additional performances from David Newington (vibraphone), Rhodri Brooks (pedal steel) and Stephen Black (clarinet, flute, saxophones).

Laurelyn Dossett - How Many Moons? (Album).

After more than three decades writing songs for Grammy Award–winning artists and fostering some of the top talent in a rich North Carolina scene, Merlefest favorite Laurelyn Dossett is finally ready to step out for her debut solo album How Many Moons? The album, produced by M.C. Taylor of Hiss Golden Messenger, is set for an August 28 release via Sycamore Road. Taylor says, “Laurelyn Dossett is a songwriter and human that I find immensely inspiring. A survivor and a wonder-er. I know she has played a huge part in the lives of so many creative people, and I'm honored to have played a part in her new album.”

How Many Moons is an embarrassment of sonic riches—and Dossett has clearly been saving her 12 best for her first. There’s everything on here from saucy, swampy, bluesy waltzes (“Tomorrow Won’t Remember”) to back-barn country rambles (lead single “How Many Moons”) and back-alley jazz-bar laments (“Run to the River”). “You and the Moon” has a gentle, ear-worm melody. She previously shared the heartbreaking single “Believe Me,” featuring producer M.C. Taylor. One could easily picture the song in a Norah Jones set. The serene lilt of “Glory Glory,  is an original song that features Taylor on electric and acoustic guitars and mandolin.

Dossett assembled a who’s-who of N.C. and regional players to help her deliver this stunning, eclectic solo debut. Players include Charly Lowry, artist and activist of the Lumbee and Tuscarora, who lends her vocals to “The Vision And The Call” (out June 29); Stephanie Coleman, a Brooklyn fiddler and musical partner of Nora Brown, whose worked with everyone from Rhiannon Giddens and Aoife O’Donovan to Béla Fleck; sacred steel legend DaShawn Hickman, whose pedal steel skills have wowed millions on America’s Got Talent; jazz/folk bassist Jason Sypher, whose list of notables includes Irma Thomas, Kermit Ruffins, and Clarence Gatemouth Brown, among many others; drummer Nick Falk (Molly Tuttle, The Wood Brothers, CAAMP and Hiss Golden Messenger); Riley Baugus (Willie Nelson, Alison Kraus and Robert Plant) and Taylor, who pitches in on acoustic/electric guitars and mandolin when he’s not behind the boards.

Disgusting Sisters - Not Cool.

Disgusting Sisters just shared their new single "Not Cool", taken from their upcoming debut album Skin & Blisters, which will be released October 30 on Source Records. "Not Cool" is, a punchy, hilarious new offering that blends tongue-in-cheek lyricism, addictive melodies and a strong dose of defiance. The single also references The Strokes, MDMA, Candy Crush and 36 year old men still buying boxers with their mum.

Cut The Wire - Find A Friend.

Boston’s wires are still fraying, but this time Cut The Wire are not just chasing sparks. They are looking for connection in the middle of the blur. After making their debut with “The Friction,” a fuzz-loaded first strike that already found its way onto major alternative and rock playlists, Cut The Wire return with “Find A Friend,” the second glimpse of their upcoming debut album, dropping November 20 via TCBYML.

Where “The Friction” introduced the band’s rusted, high-voltage indie rock, “Find A Friend” kicks the door open with jittery fuzz guitars, crashing dry drums, messy melodic solos and double-tracked slacker vocals that sound like they are trying to outrun the room as it tilts sideways. It is fast, nervous and catchy in all the right ways, pulling from 80s college rock, lo-fi analog grit and the distorted melodic chaos of bands who know that beauty often lives inside the rattle.

Lyrically, “Find A Friend” is all loose threads, worn shoes, smudged maps and lucky mistakes. It captures that strange in-between feeling of wanting someone to reach for, while everything around you shakes just enough to make standing still impossible. The Bankes Brothers - Risk It All.

Victoria, BC rock outfit The Bankes Brothers share “Risk It All,” a high-energy, angsty, and jubilant new single that captures the tension between burnout and bold decision-making. Driven by punchy guitars, an old-school rock edge, and a sense of restless momentum, the track channels the frustration of chasing stability while trying to hold onto a creative dream.

At its core, “Risk It All” reflects the reality of building a life in music while navigating the uncertainty that comes with it. “Being in the music industry is everything we wanted starting out,” Nelson Bankes shares. “As we’ve gotten more into it, there’s often a lot more ‘hurry up and wait.’ We’ve all had to work jobs to support ourselves while we chase this thing which can burn you out pretty quick. This song is about that shared frustration, and the reminder that life is what you make of it.”

The song began almost accidentally in the most unassuming way. “This one mostly happened in the shower,” Nelson explains. “I just started humming it and realized that it was a song that hadn’t been written yet.” From that simple melodic idea, the track quickly evolved into one of their most direct and explosive recordings to date.

With rhythm guitar, bass, and drums locked in early, the song still felt like it needed something to fully ignite it. That missing piece arrived unexpectedly in the form of guitarist Carson, who was recovering from a heavy flu during the session. “He was buried in his hoodie on the couch in the corner,” Nelson recalls. “Within two or three takes, he had this crazy lead part that tied the whole song together.”

Lo-fi Jones - Coming Sŵn (Album)

Lo-fi Jones, a folk-indie four-piece from the heart of mid-Wales, recently announced the release of their debut album, Coming Sŵn, available now on all major platforms (12 June 2026). Recorded primarily at Our Lady Studio in Borth with producer and engineer Mike West, the album is an eclectic, defiantly original debut — rooted in Welsh folk and indie, but defying easy categorization. Additional tracks were recorded and produced in Oxford by Nikò O’Brien and Hannah Jacobs of pecq, in Cardiff by Mei Gwynedd, and in frontman Siôn Rickard’s bedroom. Adam Walton of BBC Radio Wales once described the band’s work as being like ‘an excellent home brew’ — ‘take one sip and it might take you somewhere you weren’t expecting.’ Words that certainly ring true for this record.

The album opens with a rhythmic, syncopated thrum of nylon strings as fiddle and harmonica glide the listener into an upbeat rendition of the Welsh traditional ‘Diofal yw’r Aderyn’. From there, the band veer off the beaten track, moving between genres and moods — playful, lyrical, reflective, and subversive. Original songs tackle topics ranging from broken toasters to refugees, climate change, and the language, landscapes and communities of Wales. Lo-fi Jones weave seamlessly between Welsh and English, with a smattering of Spanish and French.

Breakfield - Breakfield (Album).

Nashville-raised band Breakfield released their self-titled album this weekend via Rounder Records. Produced by The 400 Unit’s Sadler Vaden (Jason Isbell, Beck, Morgan Wade), Breakfield reincarnates the band formerly named Boy Named Banjo as a four-piece that’s fully in tune with their most adventurous instincts.

Breakfield has already garnered support from Ones to Watch, MusicRow, Holler, All Country News and Americana Highways, who praised the album’s “sharper-edged storytelling” as the band delves into the complexities of relationships. Early singles include the rowdy “Straight for Heartbreak,” the optimistic “Pull Some Strings,” the bittersweet “Darker Out Tonight,” the tender "Ever-Loving Mind" and the anthemic “Canyon Walls.” Reimagining never-released material through the lens of their less-is-more approach, the album harnesses the spirited vitality they’ve shown at major festivals like Bonnaroo and historic venues like the Grand Ole Opry, while capturing the joyful abandon of their earliest days 15 years ago.

Formed in their teens, Breakfield includes Barton Davies (vocals/banjo), William Reames (guitar/vocals/harmonica), Ford Garrard (bass) and Sam McCullough (drums). Williams and Slowdive come to mind within the first few bars of “Interesting Times.” The atmospheric density, urgency, and sonic expansiveness associated with these artists resonate throughout the new single by Bern-based musician Mirqa. With “Interesting Times,” she delivers an impressive solo debut.

Yet Mirqa is far from a newcomer to the Swiss music scene. As a drummer, singer, songwriter, and now also a producer, she moves confidently between different musical worlds. Alongside her solo work at Studio MMI and on her own label, Greymouse, she plays drums in two bands: the singer-songwriter trio “The Schrad’Elles,” of which she has been a member for more than 35 years—with interruptions—and, since 2024, the indie alternative rock formation “Curvy Curls.”

After spending an extended period abroad, Mirqa returns with a whole series of new songs. Her music comes straight from the heart—sometimes in Bernese German, sometimes in English—depending on which side of her artistic expression is calling to be heard. For her productions, Mirqa records most of the instruments herself, only occasionally receiving support from guest musicians. This independent and highly personal approach also defines “Interesting Times.”

The writing of ‘Make You Mine’ fell out in about a day. I love those kinds of songs, because they just feel natural, unforced. Tommy Ng, who played bass on this, really created this danceable element with the driving bass line in the choruses. I hear it in my head even when I’m playing it solo. Sure this could be taken as a simple love song, and it has some of that inspiration in there. But it also is about the pursuit of dreams, and chasing something more.”

Norwegian indie-folk act Louien has shared new single 'Second Best', the second cut to be shared from her forthcoming EP Figure Me Out. Emerging from Nesodden, a peninsula in the Oslo fjord, Live Miranda Solberg (Louien) fuses the fiercer elements of Feist and Sharon Van Etten’s songwriting with the timelessness qualities present in the work of Carole King and Gillian Welch.

We last heard from Louien in the summer of 2021 when she shared her highly-acclaimed, liberating EP No Tomorrow. An attempt to write from a less serious perspective, it was the antidote to her 2019 debut album None of My Words which dealt with the trauma left behind by her father’s death. Out September 16th via Jansen Records, Figure Me Out is in many ways a sequel to last year’s No Tomorrow.

Thematically, the EP is about how characteristics we think of as cool, such as aloofness, are often the reverse and that it’s much cooler and, indeed, stronger to be yourself and choose vulnerability when you know it might bring pain.

“I’ve found that so many people try to stay mysterious in order to seem interesting, when in reality it’s being open and candid that’s the most attractive, at least in the long run,” explains Louien. "So many of my relationships have had this deep insecurity in their core, creating a very intense and very toxic dynamic,” she continues.

Her new single, 'Second Best', showcases Louien’s truly arresting vocal abilities. It speaks of the journey Louien has taken towards accepting her own emotions.

Of the song, Louien says “I grew up learning that some emotions are good and some bad. Later in life I’ve learned that emotions are emotions, and that they only become dangerous when we label them as such and let them scare us. This song came from my process of understanding this, and from meeting people who’d been taught that it’s safe to be emotional from a young age.”

Indie singer/songwriter Brooke Annibale has just released her new single "Be Around." The latest peek at her forthcoming album Better By Now (out Sept. 30th through Nettwerk Music Group), "Be Around" finds Annibale leaning more into her pop sensibilities with a simpler thematic approach and a straightforward love ballad about just wanting to be in someone's company as much as possible. Basset - Change Of Time.

This is Sam Clark and Yasmine Shelton of the folk-duo Basset. We call Toronto home, and this gritty, massive, in-your-face, messy place is woven deep into the music we create.

After graduating from university we took a big trip to Italy. I (Sam) was coming out of the worst burnout of my life, and had made the decision not to continue with school, and pursue music instead. Yas was in a similar boat, and had decided to take some time off as well.

I couldn’t believe how much Italy looked like a movie; it was so beautiful it was almost ridiculous. While we were in Florence we got caught in the rain, and not a little shower, it was a total downpour. We were soaked in seconds, but we didn’t mind at all. We had nowhere to be, and the rain wasn’t cold, so we just stood there while the water made rivers in the streets. Later that night we took a walk, with the street lights reflecting off the canals and the wet cobblestones. It was total catharsis, and the perfect thing to mark that transition in our lives.

We find the closer we stand next to each other, the better we sound. Because of this, we had always wanted to record a song around a single microphone. So we set up in a barn in rural Ontario with our friend and fellow songwriter, Benjamin Dakota Rogers. It was the high heat of summer, and there was no air conditioning in the barn, no windows. We cooked and sweated our way through that session, and you can see the heat in that video. But we really captured the heart of the song in this recording.

Lauren Monroe - singer, songwriter, and healing artist - announces a September tour in support of Messages from Aphrodite with the premiere of a new video, “Sparrow.” This is the latest offering from the upcoming album, due out September 9th, which Monroe co-produced with the legendary Jim Scott. 

Monroe, a New York-born, California-based polymath, conducts parallel careers as a gifted singer-songwriter and a renowned mental-health advocate. She approaches these intertwined roles with equal passion, her nuanced understanding of human behavior informing her music, which she sees as “a heart-based experience” that is “not just about listening—it’s about feeling and connecting.” She draws on her deep well of accrued knowledge in her songs, which she delivers in a luminous alto that resonates with empathy. Her experiential lyrics, emotionally authentic and free of pretense, are embedded in vibrant folk-rock settings, immediate in their impact and timeless in their sound. 

Music and healing have always been focal points in Monroe’s life. Earlier this year, she was joined by her husband, the legendary drummer Rick Allen of Def Leppard, for a run of intimate East Coast club dates during which they also displayed their mixed-media art. The pieces were then auctioned online to benefit Raven Drum Foundation, an organization they founded with the mission to serve, educate and empower veterans dealing with PTSD and combat trauma, people in crisis, and other at-risk individuals. 

And in 2021, she staged the first Big Love Benefit Concert, which featured performances by Billy Idol, Wynonna Judd, and the Allman Betts Band, among others. Proceeds from the event, which brought financial and mental health support to music-industry professionals affected by the pandemic, were donated to the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund. “Being of service is a way of helping yourself as well,” she reflects. “And the healing power of music is profound. Everything I do is part of a journey of healing.”

Bel-la - Nothing's Gonna Get You Back.

Los Angeles-based Artist Bel-la showcases her original brand of ethereal indie rock on the powerful new single with a universal theme of loss - "Nothing's Gonna Get You Back", out now via Dime Dash's BLUROC Records. Hohnen Ford - Infinity.

Hohnen Ford has just released her debut single "Infinity" via Young Poet (Conor Albert, WOOZE, Carmody). Hohnen Ford is the solo project of singer-songwriter Ella Hohnen-Ford who counts the likes of Joni Mitchell, Bjork, Big Thief, Fiona Apple and Sarah Vaughan as inspirations. Prior to the release of any music, Hohnen Ford found a corner of the internet in which to really express herself on Reddit, where she regularly commands the attention of up to one million viewers on her live streams, with the associated Kudos to reflect such viewership. Hohnen Ford has recently taken her live experience “offline” and has sold out venues including Vortex and St Pancras Old Church in London.

Debut single "Infinity" was written and produced by Hohnen Ford and mixed by Tom Carmichael (Matt Maltese, Porridge Radio, Wu-Lu). The song is a delectably sparse treatise on serenity, written at a make or break moment in her life where Hohnen Ford was searching within herself for answers and a breakthrough in her own self-discovery; in her lyrics she muses on the loneliness of youth as she embarks on her exploration: "I haven't found it yet / maybe I never will but I'll tretcher on / It's a lifetime skill".

Speaking more on the lyrical inspiration of the new single, Hohnen Ford described "Infinity" as: "A stream of consciousness in a quiet moment when the world felt overwhelming. A note to myself as I was reflecting on what was bubbling around in my brain at a time of crossroads in my life."

Hohnen Ford is a native of North London, by way of a brief stay in San Francisco where a next-door neighbour (who shared her house with a chatter of Parakeets) introduced her to her first instrument, the flute. From that colourful introduction, music seeped into Hohnen Ford’s world from almost every familial angle. A baptism into the world of Northern Soul came via her father; her mother flooded the house with classical piano pieces and the family has leaned into music’s healing qualities by reciting a grandfather’s favoured jazz repertoire to help him find calm in the stormy waters of dementia.

Hohnen Ford’s path almost inevitably led to the doors of The Royal Academy of music where she studied “Jazz Voice” (one of the few young women to do so). A self-confessed explorer, Hohnen Ford’s ambition is to “fill rooms around the world with people who want to be there, making them really feel something so they get lost in the music”.

Lawn - Keep Shelly in Athens - Brooke Annibale - Dubmatix Meets Future Dub Orchestra

Last month Lawn announced Bigger Sprout, their new record which is due out July 15th on Born Yesterday, the up and coming Chicago label that is home to bands like Moontype, Cafe Racer and Caution. Written, rehearsed, and recorded under a month-long period, Bigger Sprout explores a feeling of urgency as a theme and a catalyst: urgency to get out of uncomfortable situations, urgency to take relationships more seriously, urgency to work on themselves, urgency to play shows again, urgency to record, urgency to start a family, urgency to make plans and leave old settings behind, urgency to grow up and become more in tune to your surroundings, urgency to quit old habits and pick up new ones. The EP, co-written with former drummer Hunter Keene, is a document that embodies the anxieties of change, for better or worse. Now the band are sharing a second single from the record, a track called "Night Life".

Lawn's Mac Folger and Rui DeMagalhaes share lead vocal duties in the band, and while the jangly and melancholic first single "Down" was sung by Folger, DeMagalhaes takes center stage for "Night Life", a more wirey, punky track (with drums performed by Hunter Keene) that was based on an encounter with a former Todd Rundgren crew member in a DC bar.

"I was at a bar in DC shortly before the pandemic started when I met this washed up dude who said he had been a live tech for Todd Rundgren," DeMagalhaes explains. "A few drinks in, he went on a tirade against what he perceived as “weak manners” among millennials and Gen Z musicians, saying that we’ve gotten lazy and soft. He offered to show me around his favorite dives, saying that he was in aa constant search of the night life. The song is written from the perspective of a character loosely based on him, a Don Quixote-like figured who has overstayed his welcome but is oblivious to this.

"On an added note, he complained that Rundgren fired him for being a booze hound and an overall liability. He still seemed pretty resentful about losing the gig, but also played in a Rundgren cover band around the area. To be honest, I don’t know how truthful this man was, but I suppose it does not matter."

Keep Shelly In Athens pays tribute to groups that fought against the Nazis during WWII on a pair of new songs. "White Rose" is the first of these and will be released on May 27.

"The White Rose was a non-violent, intellectual resistance group in Nazi Germany. Their activities started in Munich on June 27, 1942. The group conducted an anonymous leaflet and graffiti campaign that called for active opposition to the Nazi regime. The core members of the group who carried on distributing the pamphlets, faced show trials by the Nazi People's Court (Volksgerichtshof) and were executed by guillotine four days after their arrest, on February 22, 1943."

It is a calling on the ethereal to take on form, on music to bring touch and connection over the frontiers of physical walls and distances.

In chasing the feeling of connectedness for this song, it naturally evolved into a full band sound. Dan Lissvik (Studio, Atelje) added live bass and drums to a formerly electronic track.

The alchemy of more contributors and instruments resulted in the feeling we wanted for the song.

Nutrients - Window Seat.

Nutrients, the Toronto-based group renowned for their gentle melodies and jangly pop songs are today sharing their new single, "Window Seat" which is out via Earth Libraries. The group – who have previously opened for Luna Li and Jaunt as well as performing at Boise's Treefort Festival – has slowly but surely grown into something more elaborate than their humble beginnings and this is evident with this new single.

Nutrients is often compared to various 90's bands for their slacker delivery and sometimes likened to certain contemporary bedroom pop artists for their oddball pop leanings. Periodically, but decreasingly so, they are noted for their occasional dissonant digressions. Taylor Teeple, the primary songwriter in the band, began the band as a modest home recording project deep below Boulevard St-Laurent in Montreal. After relocation to Toronto, the group’s membership eventually grew to include pianist, Iulia Ciobanu, bassist Sean McKee, and guitarist Will Hunter.

The new single finds the band mixing bouncy guitar lines and driving percussion with gorgeous vocal melodies, somewhat reminiscent of contemporaries such as Barrie, TOPS and Andy Shauf while drawing inspiration from the likes of Haircut 100, Steely Dan and China Crisis. The new single arrives with an excellent visual accompaniment further emphasizing the track's breezy notions with panning shots of vast landscapes lifted from the band's time on the road. Speaking about the single, Teeple says: "This is a quick guitar pop song that harkens back to songs Nutrients used to write. The guitar interplay is actually just two guitars playing this one-string riff at the same time with some minor deviations. The riff kinda sounds emo-adjacent almost."

After releasing a series of homemade tapes from 2016 to 2018 and early albums released on beloved Birmingham, Alabama label, Earth Libraries, the band is today returning for the first time in the 20s. Having spent the pandemic mining for fresh and forgotten sounds alongside a new member in multi-instrumentalist Ben Fukuzawa. The fruits of their labor are proudly on display this new single, "Window Seat". Teeple and Hunter’s guitars, once the center of attention, are overshadowed on this release by McKee’s basslines, Ciobanu’s ghostly harmonies, and Fukuzawa’s steady cadence.
