sundayclub - Blue Wave.

sundayclub, the Winnipeg-based, band-to-watch of Courtney Carmichael and Nikki St. Pierre share their second new single, “Blue Wave” an up-tempo, fuzzy, anthemic song, layered with three drum kits and the product of over 170 vocal takes. The track comes from their forthcoming self-titled, debut, sundayclub for release on July 10th, 2026, via Paper Bag Records. “Blue Wave” leans into the complex feeling of “pre-nostalgia”–which happens when you experience nostalgia in real time and feel as though you miss the current moment before it’s even passed.

It also makes reference to Courtney's first car, a 2009 blue Pontiac Wave (lovingly named “Trudy” after its previous owner) and the memories Courtney and Nikki started to associate with the car itself and with a specific period of time in their lives. The car quickly became a vehicle to explore the space between the past and the present.

“This song reminisces on the early days of a relationship in the midst of inner turmoil and uncertainty over what the future might hold,” Carmichael explains. “It’s about wanting to be a different, better, and more evolved version of yourself despite not being there yet, and seeking escapism in the past as a way to find solace. I felt impossibly restless at the time of writing the song and was just generally tired: tired of feeling like I wasn't progressing, tired of being patient with the record we were making, tired of feeling vulnerable and overlooked. By looking back into the past, I could escape into a feeling of wistfulness to distract myself from how frustrated I was in the present.”

Arc Iris - iTMRW (Album).

Arc Iris’ sixth LP, iTMRW , was written as the foundation for a 90-minute multimedia production combining live music, videography, and contemporary dance. The album showcases Arc Iris’ strengths as storytellers and arrangers, moving fluidly between experimental pop, string quartet, and R&B while guiding listeners through the narrative world that anchors the stage production.

iTMRW began as a simple prompt: “Write songs for the year 2080.” What started as an exercise quickly grew into a broader vision of the future. The work satirizes societal trends while mourning losses in human connection, exploring the leaps humanity must make as our minds adapt to accelerating technological change. Ultimately, iTMRW gestures toward a future in which these technologies might serve us—if deployed with care and ethical intent.

Just before committing the album to mastering, WILLOW contributed the final touches in a single, late night recording session, breathing new life into the project with inspired vocal performances across several tracks.

Stranger Still - We Might Not Tell Everybody This (Album).

The last time listeners heard from Toronto-based composer and musician Pete Johnston (on record, at least) was on his acclaimed 2025 collaboration with Màiri Morrison & Alasdair Roberts, Remembered In Exile: Songs and Ballads from Nova Scotia (Drag City). Johnston was the instigator of this project and performed on bass and organ while crafting arrangements for the seven-piece band and co-producing.

Johnston's band Stranger Still's may not quite have the firm traditional grounding of this other project but it nonetheless works from a shared perspective of reshaping folk music into something utterly unique.  It's also similarly rooted in Johnston's Nova Scotian upbringing. Stranger Still's new album, We Might Not Tell Everybody This (released yesterday May 22 on CD/DL from All-Set! Editions) is the quartet's third release and continues to trace the writing of beloved autodidact poet Alden Nowlan to produce intricate and angular songs.

Reflecting Johnston's love of British Isles folk music, progressive rock as well as his immersion in various creative music forms spanning standards to free improv, the band creates tuneful yet asymmetrical pieces that bring accessibility and eccentricity in equal measure.

Mim Adams and Randy Helmers are often heard singing together in this work (sometimes joined by Johnston). Johnston—best known as a bassist—is the group's guitar player while bass duties are handled by Rob Clutton, another key figure in Toronto's jazz and improvised music scene.  This new recording's sonic palette is undeniable tinted by its cast of noteworthy. Sarah Frank of the Bombadils (violins) and Johnston's longtime collaborator Andrew Killawee (harmonium), were both previously heard on the Morrison & Roberts recording, while harpist Màiri Chaimbeul has worked with the likes of Darol Anger, Liz Carroll, and Rose Cousins. The contributions of each of these three make this Stranger Still's most rich and varied recording to date, infusing Johnston's songs with newfound warmth and nuance.

Ethan Gold - Earth City 2: Nightfolk (Album).

Ethan Gold returns with Earth City 2: Nightfolk, the second instalment in his Earth City trilogy - an expansive, emotionally charged work exploring nightlife, duality and the search for connection in the modern world.

Where the first chapter focused on solitude, this new release shifts toward human connection, told through a series of nocturnal stories unfolding across a single, imagined night. “This is kind of my nightlife record,” says Gold. “Earth City one was a more of a lonely experience. And this record is about connecting with others.”

Recorded across Glasgow, Nashville, Berlin and Los Angeles, the album reflects Gold’s transient, international life. Its sound moves fluidly between folk instrumentation, art rock and richly layered arrangements, shaped by his instinct to let each song find its own identity. A recurring motif of trains and transit runs throughout the album, acting as a metaphor for movement, longing, and connection. “It’s about connecting and trying to interconnect the world. So it’s both a little bit alienated and about connection.”

Natii - Jolene.

“Jolene” is not another cover version of the famous Dolly Parton classic. This “Jolene” comes from the pen of the young Zurich-based singer and songwriter Natii – and it impressively demonstrates why her name is one to remember.

With a modern mix of neo-soul, pop, and urban influences, Natii delivers a debut song that sounds contemporary, emotional, and confident all at once. Inspirations from artists such as Amy Winehouse, Olivia Dean, and Jorja Smith subtly resonate throughout – the sound was created during intensive recording sessions in England, where Natii worked with international producers on her musical vision.

Why England in particular? Well, Natii strongly identifies with the sound and atmosphere of British female artists and incorporates this preference into her own music. “Jolene” was produced by Louis Ryan, who has previously worked with artists such as Demi Lovato, Bea Miller, Sabrina Carpenter, and Katy Perry.

Through her positive songs and strong messages, she aims to inspire people and pass on hope and faith, the musician says. “Jolene” impresses with catchy hooks, soulful grooves, and a modern production at an international level. The song marks a strong debut for an artist who captures the spirit of the times while establishing her own distinct style.

St. Catherine’s Child - Cosmic Dancer / Fly Me To The Moon.

St. Catherine’s Child is the project of Ilana Zsigmond, a transatlantic singer-songwriter rising in the Indie Folk/Americana scene. Born in England and raised in New Haven, Connecticut, Ilana’s music is shaped by both continents, blending the poetic storytelling of Americana with the dry wit of her British Sensibilities.

She recently signed to TRO Essex Music and its label arm Shamus Records, further enriching an iconic catalogue including Woody Guthrie, David Bowie, T. Rex, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, along with breakthrough artists such as Jaden Evans and Flamy Grant. Named after the patron saint of eloquent women, her vocal strength and enchanting songwriting lie at the heart of St. Catherine’s Child. Her 2025 album, This Might Affect You captures Ilana writing at its most honest and raw yet.

Her latest release, a double single covers project features her own irresistible and modern renditions of the classic tracks, "Cosmic Dancer" by T. Rex and "Fly Me To The Moon" by Bart Howard and made famous by Frank Sinatra.

Genre Wander: Del Caesar - Arc Iris - Lara Filip - The Alpacas - Alton Ellis & The Flames

Del Caesar - Like They Always Say.

Background promo - Del Caesar, are a phenomenal new garage/psych trio based in Brooklyn. The band is gearing up to release their second EP, aptly titled EP 2, on November 11th through their imprint Reheated Spaghetti, and in conjunction with the announcement, they’re sharing the raucous lead single “Like They Always Say”

Del Caesar is comprised of frontman/songwriter/guitarist Aaron Lloyd Barr, who doubles as a visual artist by day, and Eric Arikian (Let’s Be Loveless) on bass and Ben Reynolds (Slang King) on drums. Recorded straight to tape, EP 2’s sound embodies riff-driven, upbeat garage rock, snarling in a way that betrays some swagger, but never hostility. Their lyrics that point to the everyday: relationships, ambitions, stuff we all experience, combined with a stripped-down mono recording sound that leaves us with songs that could have been recorded last month or in 1965.

That’s not to say Del Caesar is nostalgic… far from it. There’s no kitschy throwback dress-up, in terms of appearance or sounds. While some of the band’s songs sound like they could’ve come from The Standells or The Sonics, it’s not because the band is trying to reproduce those acts; it’s because they’re tapping into the same universal vein of youth and volume. Facebook here.

 Live Dates:
10/08 - Brooklyn, NY - Brooklyn Rock N Roll Marathon (w/ Here We Go Magic)
11/18 - Brooklyn, NY - Sunnyvale (w/ Heliotropes, No Honeymoon and Von Mons)

'Like They Always Say' has all the vital garage/pysch ingredients, bags of energy, no nonsense rock and just a hint of attitude. There's also the potency and power that rock trio's can deliver when the music is kept stripped back, case in point being this song.

Arc Iris - Paint With the Sun.

Background - Arc Iris release new "Paint With The Sun" Video. Last month, Arc Iris released their second studio album Moon Saloon on Bella Union. The album follows their critically acclaimed self-titled debut that was released in 2014. Produced by the group and mixed by electronic producer David Wrench of FKA Twigs and Caribou fame, Moon Saloon showcases beat-heavy melodies and textural, groove-riding rhythms.

The band is currently in the midst of a massive US and European tour that includes dates with Superhuman Happiness and John Grant. Arc Iris is comprised of lead singer and lyricist Jocie Adams, keyboardist Zach Tenorio-Miller and drummer Ray Belli. Adams previously spent eight years as a key member of The Low Anthem, effortlessly zipping from hammer dulcimer to clarinet to bass to vocals, sometimes barely pausing to take a breath. iTunes here.

Second time on Beehive Candy this year and on this occasion with the brand new video for 'Paint With the Sun'. Back in June I stated "Production is superb and the musicianship is quite stunning, and add to this the exquisite vocals". 'Paint With the Sun' confirms the band are highly creative and deliver beautiful songs that are full of imagination.

Lara Filip - The Other Side.

Background - Chicago singer-songwriter Lara Filip stepped out from behind the short-lived moniker “Birdie Wing” to release her debut album Stop Time. Stop Time, which was produced by Grammy-nominee Liam Davis, references 70’s Laurel Canyon folk rock and polished piano pop as it explores not only Filip’s personal triumph over breast cancer but universal themes like emotional/geographical distance, the preciousness of life and the power of love.

Lara Filip is a singer/songwriter, based in the Chicagoland area. With her deep connections in the Chicago music and theatre scenes, she draws the best musicians in town to collaborate on her earthy, evocative sound.

Lara attended The Chicago Academy for the Arts for vocal performance, where she met writing partner and keyboard player, Shannon Greene Robb. Shannon went off to study music at Berklee College of Music and DePaul; while Lara began working professionally in musical theatre productions. Filip went on several tours throughout the US and Canada, finally settling back home in Chicago. Website here.

'The Other Side' is one of ten really fine songs on Lara Filip's latest album 'Stop Time'. The featured song showcases the folk side of her music. Lara is equally comfortable performing quality pop (piano pop as mentioned above), her vocals are refined and the album tracks are varied and highly likable.

The Alpacas - Artifacts.

Background - The new single off of The Alpacas debut LP is Artifacts. The Barrie Ontario group's forthcoming was produced, engineered, and mixed by Kevin Dietz (The Cranberries, Alexisonfire, Placebo, Nelly Furtado). It was recorded at Metalworks in Toronto and Slipone Digital in Newmarket, Ontario, Canada. Out Oct 14, 2016 on Willow Music.

The band's thoughts on the track: “Some of the lyrics in 'Artifacts' are about drifting apart. An occurrence that everyone experiences at one point or another in life. It's sad how natural it can seem, that things can simply fade away. However, the song also expresses a truth that it is never too late to reconnect. Time isn't a legitimate obstacle, you always have the option to reach out. It's nice to include some optimism in our music.”. Website here.

Back in August we featured the bands song 'Wax' and said at the time "the band pack power chords alongside a belting rhythm and just hook you in". 'Artifacts' demonstrates that they can consistently do the same again, with plenty of spark and energy, it's rock with passion, and music that cuts straight to the chase.

Alton Ellis & The Flames - Rock Steady.

Background - 2016 marks the 50th anniversary for Jamaica's celebrated musical genre rock steady. Rock steady, which was a successor of ska and precursor to reggae, used elements of rhythm and blues (R&B), jazz, ska as well as African and Latin American drumming. With its irresistible slow tempo beat and more bass-heavy, stripped-down sound, it was a distinct contrast from the more upbeat, big band ska era. Although it lasted only a couple of years (1966-68), rock steady is one of Jamaican music's most influential genres and produced immortal rhythms that are still sampled and used today.

17 North Parade, VP Records' vintage imprint, commemorates the genre this year with First Class Rock Steady. The 12" double vinyl edition is available from Fri. (Sept 30) and follows its 40-track CD and digital companion box set  (released on July 1) as well as the 7" limited edition vinyl piece exclusive for Record Store Day 2016.

This new collection of First Class Rock Steady is completely remastered on black vinyl. The 24-track set expands on the 16-track 7" RSD vinyl exclusive and cherry picks the CD and digital version's most pivotal songs from some of the genre's defining artists like  Lee "Scratch" Perry, The Techniques, Desmond Dekker and Johnny Nash. It's detailed cover reflects the excitement of the era when postal mail was the only mode for sharing this burgeoning Jamaican export for worldwide consumption. Playing off of Jamaica's long history of tourism, the packaging also features images of picturesque postcards and stamps of Cricket (a Jamaican pastime), the Doctor Bird (national symbol) and Montreal's Expo '67 (World's Fair). In addition, the set includes extensive liner notes written by Harry Wise and filled with commentary from the genre's key players, including living legend Bunny "Striker" Lee, Trinidad and Tobago's late-great Lynn Taitt and the 2014 fallen icon, Hopeton Lewis.

Just one of the songs on this wonderful collection of vintage music and also the name of the genre, 'Rock Steady' by Alton Ellis remains a personal favourite, and is now surrounded by so many other wonderful songs, from when I was very, very young (honest!).

Quality Not Quantity: Renders - Arc Iris - La Legacie - Chain Wallet

Renders - Running Through The Night.

Kelly McMichael (Renders) has this to say about the featured song and forthcoming EP - The song is my 'take back the night' anthem, inspired by Slutwalk, dedicated to empowering those of us who feel vulnerable walking at night, and to protest victim-blaming. It's the first track off my Self-titled EP. The EP is out July 8th.

On this EP, I am looking both inwards towards the emotional core and outwards to the dance floor. I write about the fluid and complex relationships we face - relationships tied to personal growth, inner struggles, and the multi-faceted world of human relations. This debut EP is about claiming space and demanding acceptance. Writing from an emotional intelligence; and singing for the fluid and tangled forces tied to nature. Keeping a keen ear to both classic and contemporary pop music.

There are four really cool songs on the EP and featured track 'Running Through The Night' is the opener. Beehive Candy featured Renders in the latter part of 2015 and we were impressed back then. Her music remains consistently pleasing and there is considerable variety packed into the new EP.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Arc Iris - Kaleidoscope.

Background - On August 19, the New England based Arc Iris will release a new album called Moon Saloon. Produced by the group and mixed by electronic producer David Wrench of FKA Twigs and Caribou fame, the album showcases beat-heavy melodies and textural, groove-riding rhythms.

Lead singer and lyricist Jocie Adams, Tenorio-Miller, and drummer Ray Belli form the core of Arc Iris, all virtuosic musicians in their own right. Adams spent eight years as a key member of indie darlings The Low Anthem, effortlessly zipping from hammer dulcimer to clarinet to bass to vocals, sometimes barely pausing to take a breath. As the band members see it, Moon Saloon works like a song cycle that parallels the arc of everyman’s passage through modern day dilemmas. According to Adams: “The album is meant to be cathartic. There’s an imbalance in everyone’s lives. When there’s often so much going on, we yearn for simplicity.”

The album starts with “Kaleidoscope”, mimicking a kind of fanciful stroll down the street, and ends with the title track, a delicate soliloquy in a strange, desolate landscape. The album sometimes offers a sharp counterpoint to the mean-spirited nature of current American political discourse. One example is “Paint with the Sun,” a paean to those who help others in need. Soaring over each song is Adams’ ethereal voice, often joined in close harmonies with other members of the band.

Tour dates:
7/5: Brooklyn, NY - C'mon Everybody
7/12: Brooklyn, NY - C'mon Everybody
7/19: Brooklyn, NY - C'mon Everybody
7/21: New Haven, VT - Cafe Nine
7/26: Brooklyn, NY - C'mon Everybody
9/9: Elizabethtown, NY - Otis Mountain Get Down

'Kaleidoscope' suggests there will be considerable quality across the awaited album. Production is superb and the musicianship is quite stunning. Add to this the exquisite vocals, and waiting another couple of months for the rest seems a bit of a tease.

La Legacie - Dinner.

Background - La Legacie is an award winning band of 5 with Vermillion and SouFire. La Legacie is based out of Northern France and are all English except their drummer, Baptiste who is French and their Lead guitarist and Pro Engineer, Benoit (who is also French, but completely bilingual), making La Legacie a bilingual band.

La Legacie has their our own recording studio which they create classics out of. Originally setup purely for writing and recording songs for the band, but now they are opening it up for others to use. (www.dusktodawnstudios.com) Dinner is La Legacie's latest single, described as a cheeky song.

'Dinner' may be 'cheeky' however it's one really good listen. The band are clearly making good use of their own studio, and there is plenty of room on Beehive Candy for good quality music that can add a smile anytime.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chain Wallet - Muted Colours.

Background - You can’t deny that there is something sorrowful behind the Bergen-based, lo-fi dream/psych pop trio Chain Wallet, and you can’t hide that their music suits the environment wherein it was created. It may be a cliché that it always rains in the band’s hometown, but when you play Chain Wallet’s self-titled debut album, it’s not too difficult imagine the mist hanging heavily over their indie dystopian vision of Bergen.

Even though feelings of nostalgia and melancholy lurk in the Scandinavian shadows, it’s not difficult to find indie-pop gold in its purest form, glittering below the heavy layers of synth and reverb. Tracks like ‘Shade’ and ‘Abroad’ have an up-tempo urgency to them which calls to mind bands like Motorama, whereas other dreamy psych ballads like ‘Muted Colours’ and ‘Stuck In The Fall’ occupy a rich and hazy middle ground between Diiv and Wild Nothing.

On their debut album, Chain Wallet explore themes of betrayal, idleness and crushed dreams against the backdrop of an existential breakdown; The album is loosely based in the same universe, and portrays different aspects of the quarter-life crisis, ensuring that ‘Chain Wallet’ hits on a visceral, teenage level, amongst the shimmer and haze of the lo-fi soundscape that they conjure.

Frode Boris from the band explains the band’s ethos and sound - “We want to capture the acute distress of an afflicted character; his self-indulgent pity, gradual loss of touch with reality and his forlorn attempts on returning to normal life. The abrupt disintegration unveils interesting tensions between urgency and inertia. The album is about fragmented memories, unfulfilled ambitions and the quiet whisper of a stranger.” Self-title debut album due out 7th Oct 2016 via Jansen Plateproduksjon.

Having read the bands promo material I was left wondering what to expect. 'Muted Colours' is actually a pretty bright song, with lot's of dreamy vibes and psychedelic leanings. The bands brand of Indie pop, has another fan.
