Soft Hearted Scientists - Frog - The Last Time - Coloured Paper Shapes - Jesse Harris feat. Norah Jones

Soft Hearted Scientists - Wonder Girl.

Taken from the new album “The Phantom of Canton”. Soft Hearted Scientists are a Cardiff based band who can loosely be described as psychedelic, in the sense that they create a technicolour sound using a huge variety of instruments and sound effects, whether guitars or vintage keyboards. The idea is to transport the listener to a better place, whether that’s on a 3-minute action packed single, or a 10-minute multi section epic.

Their influences include everything from The Beatles, Beach Boys and Kinks to The Beta Band, Super Furry Animals, 1940s big band music and electronic music. Nothing is out of bounds. It all gets thrown into the SHS blender. The band has had great press reviews and radio play on BBC 6 music shows such as Cerys Matthews, Gideon Coe, and Stuart Maconie’s Freak Zone.

“Wonder Girl” A lovestruck song featuring half an album’s worth of hooks, Motown and surf guitars, celestial humming choirs, a sudden mood change middle section, and the whole thing bounces off the walls with energy.

There are shades of The Beach Boys, The Kinks, ancient Disney film songs, and circus and vaudeville music in this track as well as many obscure 1940s songs (singer Nathan falls asleep every night to such tunes so they must be having a subconscious effect). It crams 80 years of musical genres into just over 3 minutes 30 seconds. The Wonder Girl in question may be real, an ideal, a ghost from an old photograph, or she might just be a product of wishful thinking.

Frog - BITTEN BY MY LOVE VAR. XI.

Today August 29th, Cult New York-based band Frog announce ‘The Count,’ their seventh album, with the “BITTEN BY MY LOVE VAR. XI” single. The new record will be released on September 19th.

Following February’s ‘1000 Variations on the Same Song,’ Daniel Bateman and brother Steve (drums/percussion) offer another ten variations, locking into a style and sound, stretching its limitations and exploring the possibilities.

The eleven variations released six months ago brought Frog back to the Indie Rock and Alt Country sounds of previous albums like ‘Kind of Blah’ and ‘Count Bateman,’ earning them Stereogum’s Album of the Week, sessions for KEXP and WFMU, as well as praise from Pitchfork, FLOOD Magazine, KLOF Mag, and airplay from stations like KCRW, WFUV, WKDU, and WNYU, which saw them reach the top 30 of the NACC 200 chart, on top of national airplay in Europe from FM4, Kosmos, and the BBC.

However, ‘The Count’ takes a left turn from even Frog’s most idiosyncratic past material, with Bateman assuming the titular role of a mysterious New Yorker turned piano man for one impromptu and unforgettable performance. While Bateman’s skill for penning songs about love, loss, and lust remains unchanged, this is a Frog album like no other.

The Last Time - She Says She's Lost Her Glow.

After 25 years of existence, The Last Time, a Power Pop group from the island of Yeu, France, has finally recorded 4 compositions at the legendary Blackbox studio. The release date is September 20th, 2025 @ Truly Yours Records.

It's also the new band of Olivier Popincourt. (For the benefit of the uninitiated, Olivier Popincourt is a stylish French Mod, a musical Anglophile, an accomplished songwriter, and a big fan of Paul Weller - Acoustic Egg Box, 2020). Here is what Jean-William Thoury (lyricist notably for Bijou, Marie-France and Daniel Sani, sound producer, journalist and rock'n'roll critic) thinks of it:

"An arpeggio, a voice in the third, a roll on the toms between the different parts of the song and, abracadabra, the magic happens, you just have to know it and, above all, love it... The Last Time have always loved it. Verse, chorus, bridge, solo, nothing is missing from their songs which have the elegance of never reaching the fateful three-minute mark. Everything here breathes grace and sincerity. With a shared passion for so-called pop music in the Small Faces or The Jam meaning of the term, The Last Time is also one of the best songs of the Rolling Stones golden age period (1965). It also evokes a certain awareness, that of time passing. "Let's be brilliant before it's too late" is what Olivier Popincourt (vocals, guitar), Olivier Cha (guitar), Pierre Borny (bass) and Daniel Le Bris (drums), who have been playing together for 25 years, seem to have said to each other. But this is the first recording!”

Coloured Paper Shapes - Playtime.

Coloured Paper Shapes is the genre-fusing project of South London-based artist-producer Richard James Jakubowski. Blending jangly guitars, rich storytelling, and subtle experimental touches, his sound finds a sweet spot between indie pop and alternative rock. Honest, human, and emotionally expansive.

Drawing on a lifelong reverence for David Bowie and the stylistic quirks of acts like Metronomy and Japanese Breakfast, Jakubowski crafts songs that speak to people caught somewhere between reflection and release—what he calls music for extrospective introverts. His writing delves deep into the quiet thoughts that live behind loud nights out, exploring the blurry intersections of identity, routine, and connection.

His current body of work forms part of a wider concept project titled Flamingos, a narrative-rich album that plays out like the soundtrack to an imaginary film or musical. Set against the backdrop of an all-night dive bar (based loosely on a real spot once frequented by Jakubowski and his friends), Flamingos follows a group of 30-something co-workers caught in the familiar loop of post-work drinks, blurry weekends, and existential stasis—until one of them starts to see the cycle for what it is.

His upcoming single “Playtime” began life as something separate from the Flamingos arc, originally inspired by a scene from Sean Baker’s The Florida Project. The artist shares, “I was watching The Florida Project, and there’s a scene where these kids are running around a motel parking lot, laughing and causing mayhem. That moment really stayed with me — the way the film captures innocence and joy even in tough circumstances.” He continues, “I wanted to write a song about that feeling of being able to let go — how, whether we’re kids or adults, we have certain people or places that let us tap back into that carefree sense of play.”

Jesse Harris - Having a Ball (feat. Norah Jones).

"Having a Ball" is the new love song from Grammy Award-winning songwriter Jesse Harris and features him in a duet with his longtime collaborator and friend Norah Jones. Wrapped in a lush orchestral arrangement by Brazilian composer Maycon Ananias, the song blends classic elegance with emotional intimacy. It’s the second glimpse into Harris’s forthcoming orchestral album, If You Believed In Me, out this fall: a sweeping, cinematic journey from one of today’s most quietly iconic songwriters from NYC.

"Since I first met Norah in 1998, she has always brought magic and energy to every song she sings. It had been years since we'd recorded together, and ‘Having a Ball’ seemed to cry out for her to harmonize with me. Once she got in the studio, her improvised ad libs and scats added so much, so I asked her to do two separate takes of it, which you can now hear throughout the song" says Jesse Harris.

If You Believed In Me began with an unexpected offer: “If you ever need an orchestra…” Jesse Harris’s friend and arranger Maycon Ananias had extra recording time with an Estonian orchestra and invited Harris to send a song. That first experiment, Dolores, sparked something new. Though Harris - a Grammy winner and longtime collaborator of Norah Jones, Willie Nelson, and Cat Power - had released over twenty albums, he had never recorded with an orchestra.

Inspired, Harris wrote eight more songs in five weeks, crafting intricate compositions designed for symphonic arrangement. Recorded between New York, Rio, and Tallinn, the album features guest appearances from Norah Jones, Brazilian guitarist Guilherme Monteiro, Jake Sherman, and Marine Quéméré of Nouvelle Vague.

better joy - Glazyhaze - Frog - Phonseca

better joy - quiet thing.

Following her first new music of 2025 with ‘waiting on time’, Manchester-based Bria Keely, better known as better joy, has shared her new single ‘quiet thing’ taken from her forthcoming debut EP ‘heading into blue’ released on 28th March.

Building through gritty guitars and honeyed vocals to a euphoric chorus, new track ‘quiet thing’ is a captivating and buoyant new track. A reflective and personal song, lyrically it illuminates the understated beauty of the normal and quiet times in relationships.

Bria says, "’Quiet thing’ is one of those songs that has taken on so many different lives since its original conception. I was originally inspired by someone close to me, who at the time was describing the quiet type of love he needed from his partner when going through a tough time. It got me thinking how important it is to not take the quiet moments in relationships for granted. I suppose I wanted to write an ode to those moments, but I didn’t want it to be sweet-sounding; I wanted the lyrics to be against music that had a bit of grit to offset the sweetness.”

New single ‘quiet thing’ is taken from better joy’s forthcoming debut EP ‘heading into blue’, produced by Mike Hedges (The Cure, U2, Manic Street Preachers). The 6-track EP features previous singles ‘waiting on time’, ‘carnival’ and ‘what a day’ alongside new single ‘quiet time, as well as two brand-new tracks, ‘couldn’t run forever’ and ‘can I land the plane?’. It is the first full-length project from better joy and is both a perfect introduction to better joy’s alt-pop sound and an exciting taster of more to come this year.

Glazyhaze - Nirvana.

Glazyhaze will release their second album 'SONIC' on 21st March. Now they share new track 'Nirvana', which offers a blend of fresh pop energy and dreamy feels. The heart of 'Nirvana' is the interplay of two distinct vocal lines: one raw and direct, the other soft and melancholic, creating a contrast that adds depth and emotion to the song. Built on shimmering guitars and playful rhythms, it explores the complexities of desire, the inner struggle between longing and letting go, and the bittersweet, fleeting nature of perfect moments.

The accompanying video, set in a greenhouse transformed into a cosy library, features two protagonists playfully interacting and exchanging books. The video's light-hearted, dreamlike atmosphere complements the song's warm sound. 'Nirvana' follows previous single 'Forgive Me', a haunting shoegaze ballad that explores the bittersweet of love and heartbreak.

Forthcoming album 'Sonic' was written and recorded between Italy and London, produced, mixed and recorded by Paolo Canaglia and mastered by Maurizio Baggio, the album explores the complexity of love, narrating a journey of self-discovery and emotional contrasts. It is a more ambitious and mature album, characterized by a more personal sound and writing that embraces shoegaze, post-punk and alt-rock sounds.

Frog - 1000 Variations on the Same Song (Album).

Following the critical and commercial success of 2023's ‘Grog,’ cult New York duo Frog return with ‘1000 Variations on the Same Song,’ their sixth album, which features their recent singles.

An eclectic, emotional, and lyrically vivid collection, the songs see Daniel Bateman refer to My Chemical Romance, Gucci, Stillwell deals, fatherhood, and the 6 train (“I was listening to a lot of Mozart, Kodak Black, and Prince, but it doesn't really sound like any of those.”). Musically, songs like “TOP OF THE POPS VAR. I” and “DOOMSCROLLING VAR. II” touch on the agitated Indie Rock that defined their earlier work, while the Alt. Country of ‘Count Bateman’ and ‘Grog’ can be heard on ‘WHERE U FROM VAR. III’ and ‘ARTHUR MCBRIDE IN THE LOWER EAST SIDE VAR. X.’ Elsewhere, singles like ‘JUST USE YR HIPS VAR. VI’ and December’s ‘DID SANTA COME VAR. IX’ introduce a smoky lounge element to Frog’s sound, but as Bateman explains it, these are all just variations on the same song:

“1000 Variations on the Same Song is a theme and variations—there are times in your life as a songwriter where you'll start a bunch of stuff that all sounds alike, which can be a problem, something that you want to excise from yourself. This time I decided to embrace it and take it as far as it could go.”

Since Frog returned in 2023 with the addition of Daniel’s brother Steve Bateman on drums, they’ve received significant critical acclaim and enjoyed sold-out shows in the Tri-state area. Their 2025 dates will see the band joined by Frog co-founder Tom White on bass and will take them to new cities for first-time-ever shows, as well as to the KEXP studios for a session with Larry Mizell, Jr. on March 25th.

Phonseca - When Night Equals Day.

‘When Night Equals Day’ is the superb new single from Indie Synthpop duo, Phonseca, which brings together Bristol’s much respected keys/synth player Matthew O’Connor and radiant Swedish vocalist Kristina Sheppard.

Matthew has a rich musical background, bringing his talent to bands across the musical spectrum from House to Shoegaze, Psyche to Soundtrack, Electronica, Britpop and Rock. Both touring and featuring on albums released on labels as diverse as Rocket Recordings, Invada Records and Dishy Recordings, his creative input has featured on many projects. Inevitably the urge to form a more personal musical landscape saw him starting to write his own music. This began the process which resulted in ‘Between A Dream’, the debut Phonseca album, which came out in 2019.

The album was championed in the UK on BBC Radio 6 Music by both Gideon Coe and Steve Lamacq. With Steve Lamacq featuring it in his "Recommends" show. It also picked up lots of airplay and excellent reviews around the world. Matthew’s classical piano training has an influence on his work. This was the catalyst for first writing with Kristina, initially working on songs for a Disney project which followed a chance meeting at a wedding fayre, where they had stalls directly opposite each other. Since its release, the pair have spent the past few years promoting the debut album while writing/recording the second ‘Everything Lasts Forever’, which is now ready for release via Old Bad Habits Label.

‘When Night Equals Day’, the second single to come from the new album, captures the emotional heartbeat of Phonseca’s indie synthpop, electronica sound. The track’s unhurried pulsing beats, icy ambient synths, desolate piano and sweeping drones make for a deep, contemplative listen. A wintry, never ending glacial atmosphere pervades the track, conjuring lonely and dark winter nights. What begins as a fragile cry for help, evolves into something more resilient. Then by the refrain ‘When Night Equals Day’, it’s realistically introspective again.

“As with the whole album, these songs have a nocturnal feel and this one is no exception”, says O’Connor. “Lyrically I was inspired by classic songs like Kraftwerk - Computer Love and Soft Cell - Bedsitter and other songs too that are so evocative the images freely play out in your mind. The title refers to the Spring equinox, and by complete coincidence this was when we were recording the vocals at Invada. It’s my favourite lyric and possibly my favourite song on the album and another amazing vocal from Kristina, completely embracing the song and meaning”, he further reveals.

Frog - Zooni - Catherine MacLennan

Frog have shared 'Black Friday' taken from their fourth album 'Count Bateman' due for release next month. The band carve out a pleasing and unique blend of genre styles with just a little quirkiness to further their originality.

From Zooni we have a new video for 'Cotton Blue' which is a beautifully arranged piece, that gently drifts somewhere between lo-fi and alt rock.

We have two songs from Catherine MacLennan namely 'Roll With The Wind' and 'Emmet's Song'. Both are pretty special to say the least, as this talented singer-song writer creates some pristine and natural roots music.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Frog - Black Friday.

Count Bateman is the fourth release from Frog, the acclaimed cult Wyrd-Americana Indie band from Queens, NYC. Their music has found over one million streams on Spotify, they’ve received support from the BBC, NPR Music and many more.

On their latest eclectic and emotional outing, there’s hints of the Carole King’s ‘70s pop, Jonathan Richman’s earnest eccentricity, Ned Doheny’s white boy funk, Greg Dulli’s lust, the Meat Puppets’ bastardized Americana and the wild wit and narrow self-control of The Silver Jews.

Count Bateman will be co-released August 16th by Audio Antihero and Frog founder Danny Bateman's fledgling Tape Wormies imprint (which he describes as “a hippie commune label, seeking to make its artists co-owners/profit sharers so that everyone will help each other succeed”).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Zooni - Cotton Blue.

‘Cotton Blue’ follows the April release of their debut single ‘Pany’, which appeared on the Radio X Evening Playlist, was included on Spotify’s ‘New Music Friday’ and ‘Hot New Bands’ playlists, and was followed by a packed performance at The Great Escape Festival.

Discovered by Mercury and Brit award winning producer Charlie Andrew (Alt J, Nick Mulvey, Marika Hackman), the band - Peter Martin, George Godwin, Ben Clark, and Matt Glasbey - mix hypnotic beats with delicate piano, angular guitars, and haunting vocals.

Talking about the single, they explain "Cotton Blue is an introspective song about giving up on a broken relationship. It was written and demoed on a retreat to the Welsh countryside with the producer Jay Pocknell.”

Following their sold out debut London show on July 2nd at The Waiting Room, the band will appear at the below festivals:

Kendal Calling, Cumbria | July 25-28
Moseley Folk & Arts Festival, Birmingham | Aug 30 – Sept 1

Catherine MacLennan - Roll With The Wind / Emmet's Song.

Hot on the heels of her first two singles released last month, JUNO-award winner Catherine MacLellan, returns with another double release, "Roll With The Wind" and "Emmet’s Song" from her forthcoming album Coyote. This self-produced record is a travelogue through heartbreak, loss and the joy of life, set to be released in October 2019.

Some thoughts from Catherine on the songs: "Roll With The Wind" was written for a few male friends in my life, who would come and visit me at my country home and somehow disturb all the quiet peace. They’d waltz in from the city, break all the girl’s hearts, start fights with the guys, drink all the booze, and then leave me to clean up their mess. And yet, I would always welcome them back.

“Emmet’s Song" was written for my teenage nephew. He was going through such a tough point of his life, so much change and feeling outcast from society and his family. He asked to stay with me for a while, and I took him in. The two of us learned so much during that time. I was so inspired by his bravery, walking through life with his head up and heart open despite the hardships he was going through.

Catherine’s previous album of original material, The Raven’s Sun, won a JUNO for Roots Recording of the Year in 2015. Since then she’s been building a catalogue of songs just waiting to come to light. The songs are a result of big changes in her life and perspective. And while The Raven’s Sun was an intimate look into her musical work with long-time collaborator Chris Gauthier, COYOTE builds on that and adds the sounds of a fuller band. As well, it adds some more traditional East Coast instrumentation of accordions, fiddles and bouzouki.
