Jill Andrews - Burr Island - Megan Wyn

Jill Andrews - 80's Baby.

Ahead of her anticipated new album Modern Age arriving on August 18th, Nashville singer-songwriter Jill Andrews has released her new single "80's Baby." With the slow burning nostalgic leadoff track, Andrews remarks with wistfulness on just how different the world has come to be since the days of making mixtapes and cruising the cul-de-sacs.

Of the new single, Andrews said “I grew up in a small town in East Tennessee. We lived in middle class suburbia with green lawns, fenced dogs, and nice neighbors for the most part. If my homework was done, I had freedom to run around the neighborhood and explore with my friends. Friday night was a trip to Blockbuster and The Dairy Queen for a couple chocolate dipped cones for my brother and I. My family would all gather on the couch with a bowl of popcorn to watch the latest Indiana Jones movie.

As a child, I loved the feeling of togetherness with my friends and family. My life was centered around other people. In writing this song, I was comparing my experience of childhood to my own children’s. There has been more isolation in their experiences brought on by the pandemic and by the proliferation of personal devices. Now kids can be entertained at every moment. The outdoors isn’t as exciting as watching television or playing video games. There isn’t as much time to dream and create. It makes me miss the simplicity of my childhood and wish that I could go back in time a few decades and take my kids with me.”

Standing at the intersection of memory lane and tomorrow, Modern Age is an ode to simpler times, an album that goes beyond nostalgia to veneration of what were to so many, the golden years. It’s a stunning reflection on how far we’ve all come, but one that leaves the listener wondering about the price of “progress.” Produced by Lucas Morton at 4115 Studios, it features ten tracks that range from anthemic, pop dreams with ethereal synths and rich vocals, to intimate acoustic confessions. It’s a meditation on childhood and changing times, growing up and looking back. In moments, the epitome of 90s pop perfection with airy synths and shimmering vocals and in others, pared down and heart-wrenchingly intimate, Modern Age is dripping in reverence for a simpler time, when the world was as big as your high school, when love was waiting by the phone, when we wondered about the future instead of lived in it. With addictive melodies that evoke Susannah Hoffs and Kate Bush, Modern Age is at once a time capsule of and a love letter to the places we all began.

Burr Island - English Roses.

From the UK’s West Country, Burr Island are duo and best friends, Tom England and Oskar Porter. After garnering support from Mark Radcliffe at BBC Radio 2 for their second single, ‘Nunney Town’, Burr Island dive into more political waters with their third release, ‘English Roses’.

Having harnessed a core following round the Glastonbury type fields of yore, Burr Island have brought comparison to the iconic Simon & Garfunkel, however, their originals and equally introspective lyrics bring new meaning to that golden era of San Francisco ‘happening’ hippie spirit, as channelled through their beloved West Country, as they take you on their own Burr Island; an intimate, melodic journey and state, in search of meaning and humane value.

‘English Roses’ is a folk song about xenophobia and how growing up in small towns, the duo saw the insidiousness of unconscious racism, notably during Brexit when there was so much hostility in the air. “You only grow English roses, calling the other flowers weeds”. Now, with the government forcing this cruel rhetoric again, with ‘STOP THE BOATS’, aiming to divide us once more, Burr Island look to remind us that there is an inherent commonality among humans.

Recorded at Kundalini Studios in Devon and produced by Steve Cradock (Ocean Colour Scene/Paul Weller/The Specials/P.P. Arnold), ‘English Roses’ encases its politically charged lyrics in a sentimental and warm vintage sound, which builds from its poignant beginnings to powerful and thought-provoking heights. It’s a classic sound but with the duo’s perfect heartfelt harmonies echoing important social and political issues of our modern era.

Megan Wyn - You Don't Get It.

They say no artist's journey is the same. And in the case of Megan Wyn that statement could not be more true. Megan has been playing festivals and shows on the circuit since she was 16. At the ripe age of 18 she has already done the toilet tour more than most musicians ten years her senior, thanks to the kind help of her mum, Nerys.

It is rare that an artist's first single release comes after sets at The Great Escape, Truck Festival, Y Not and Isle Of Wight Festival. Especially when they completed their debut headline tour earlier in the year. But no story is the same.

An old head on young shoulders, Megan rightly feels that she has reached her starting point. With live experiences already in the bag, it was just a matter of honing her sound and landing on something that was truly representative of herself. It's also true that moving from her native Anglesey just off the Welsh coast, to her now home of Manchester at the age of 16, would have helped Megan develop not only as a musician but most importantly as a woman.

Megan grew up wanting exactly what she has now, the ability to put pen to paper and have songs fall out of her, to play shows to packed out venues in Manchester, as well as, elsewhere. And most importantly, play the festivals she probably would have attended anyway. 'You Don't Get It', sounds like a cut from the Ayoade classic, Submarine. It is a quintessentially British sounding record full of hope and desperation in equal measure.

Born Days - Sandy Bailey - Ribs - Lindsay Lou

Photo - Erica Contreras
Born Days - My Little Dark.

Born Days is the conceptual darkwave synth-pop project from Chicago-based multi-instrumentalist singer, songwriter, and producer Melissa Harris. Her first full-length album My Little Dark is set to release on October 6, 2023, through AudioSport Records.

Candidly vulnerable and emotionally complex, My Little Dark is a concept album that draws inspiration from the confessional poetry of Sylvia Plath and the childlike innocence of Dr. Seuss to narrate a mystical, sci-fi, coming-of-age, adventure of a young woman trying to survive the psychological limitations she has placed on her own reality. Mystical and melancholic, Harris’s ethereal voice escapes into dark symphonic soundscapes driven by dreamy, synth-heavy polyrhythms that paint a cinematic electronic pop soundtrack soaked in moody, hazy textures.

Drawing influences from alternative, darkwave, dreampop, and goth culture, Harris plays with a sonic palette of soft, dark, and dusty tones that mix elements of grunge, post-punk, neo-psychedelia, shoegaze, and modern pop. Deeply nostalgic and profoundly personal, My Little Dark explores Harris’s struggles with mental illness, trauma, and destructive cycling. Her distinctively soft and sweet voice is saturated with otherworldly essence that explodes into apocalyptic crescendos and escapes into ghostly innocence. Harris’s songs are brilliantly enchanting and sonically dripping with haunted textures, little spirits from the ether, and dystopian landscapes that leave you longing for a more innocent and beautiful time.

My Little Dark is a project that has been several years and several thousand miles in the making. Harris began making experimental music under the name Born Days in 2017 as a way to express herself, process her memories, and heal from the complexities of trauma to reconnect with the purity and innocence that is part of the innate order of nature. After receiving critical acclaim on her first two self-released EPs from Bandcamp, Chicago Tribune, Destroy//Exist, and Audiotree, she went on to perform live sets and music festivals with globally recognized talent like Neggy Gemmy, George Clanton, Kedr Livanskiy, and Caroline Polachek.

Sandy Bailey - I Ain't Your Honey.

Massachusetts-based singer-songwriter Sandy Bailey has unveiled “I Ain’t Your Honey,” a sassy new track from her forthcoming LP, Daughter Of Abraham, out August 18th viaRed Parlor Records.

“The impact of the digital age on our social interactions is a topic that’s often circling around in my brain,” explains Bailey. “It really is bizarre to me the way we connect through our online personas. It gets especially weird when it involves internet dating. I’m fascinated by the packaging and wrapping paper we put on ourselves when we are seeking true intimacy. I wrote an earlier version of this song that had the lyric ‘I’m never crying in my pictures.’ My friends and I have gone on our share of Tinder dates and at best we would be able to laugh about how they went afterward,” she continues. “I often wonder how different things would be if our dating profiles had a list of our personality flaws and photos of our morning hair rather than our prettiest scenes and best angles.”

“I Ain’t Your Honey” follows title track “Daughter Of Abraham,” in which Bailey channels her ancestors for a tale about a former slave walking to freedom along the Underground Railroad, and “Get The Message Through,” about the irony of the current environment that we live in, where we are more connected than ever through the internet but also lonelier than ever.

”The depth of Bailey’s songwriting stems from her life and identity as a biracial woman and single mother who abandoned a Pentecostal upbringing in favor of a life of art-making and rock n’ roll. Her sound has often been compared to acts like Norah Jones, Patsy Cline, and Susan Tedeschi, though the upcoming 10-song collection, expertly produced by Bailey, showcases her bolder, more idiosyncratic attention to detail.

Ribs - Claws.

Ribs, the Boorloo-based (Perth, AUS) indie-pop band known for creating honest and expressive music, Have released their latest single, 'Claws', today Friday, August 4. With a passion for connecting with others on topics that are often challenging to discuss, such as mental health, social power constructs, and healing from trauma, Ribs delivers a clashing and cathartic anthem that explores the journey of healing from intimate partner violence.

Originally conceived as a solo, stripped-back lyrical piano project by Georgina Cramond, Ribs received critical acclaim and emotional responses from audiences in her one-woman music and storytelling show, 'Interrupting a Crisis'.

Driven by a desire for collaboration and connection with other artists, Cramond found like-minded creatives to join the project, resulting in the dynamic four-piece band that exists today, with each member contributing to Ribs' authentic songwriting, supported by vibrant, immersive sounds.

Now, 'Claws' is Ribs' heaviest release to date, both in terms of content and sound. The song serves as a powerful anthem for those who have endured abuse and have embarked on a journey of healing from intimate partner violence. Drawing from her own lived experience, Georgina Cramond's poignant songwriting delves into the pain, anger, and growth that are intertwined with this transformative process.

Cramond shares, "Growing claws is about learning what you will no longer accept, how anger can be a protective and productive force, and regaining control over the jagged parts of your history." Her guarded vocals in the verses are contrasted by a commanding, hardened chorus, where she screams out, "I grew claws", to reclaim her own power and control in her life.

Lindsay Lou - Shame.

Lindsay Lou shares the dreamy new single “Shame” from her forthcoming album Queen of Time, out September 29 on Kill Rock Stars Nashville. Featuring an anthemic solo from Grammy-winning guitar virtuoso Billy Strings, the song and its accompanying music video highlight the album’s continued theme of duality. “Shame” challenges the notion that we should hide any part of ourselves and celebrates the multitudes women contain.

"I don’t think shame does us any favors,” says Lindsay Lou. “There’s this lie that’s been passed down and around that we need shame, that it keeps us safe or something. I'm calling bullshit on that. We contain multitudes, and each aspect is as deserving of love as the next.” She continues, “May we all embrace the balance of feminine and masculine aspects in our nature. May we reclaim our own self-expression and uncouple ourselves from systems that aim to oppress or cast shadows of shame on the beauty of our bodies."

After the loss of her grandmother, the end of her marriage, and the overwhelming turmoil of COVID lockdowns, Lou sought out a hallucinogenic ritual that would not only inform the way she processed the waves of grief ahead of her, but led to a profound realization about her own feminine power. With a new vision of womanhood in mind, she began to see a throughline from her grandmother, to herself, to the art she was creating. Queen of Time is the result of that deeply personal spiritual journey, unfolding across eleven tracks of tender, heartbreakingly beautiful music. Lou has previously shared two singles from the album, including the title track “Queen of Time” and the folk-pop ballad “Nothing Else Matters” featuring Grammy Award-winner Jerry Douglas.

Soft Science - Sloppy Heads - The Connells

Soft Science - Kerosene.

Soft Science have just released their new dreampop single "Kerosene" off their upcoming new album 'Lines' on Shelflife (US) / Spinout Nuggets (UK) / Fastcut (Japan).

Soft Science began working on their recently completed album Lines in 2019, forging the record in their home studios together and at times in isolation from each other during the height of the pandemic, swapping tracks and making adjustments from a distance for what felt like an eternity. Reuniting in person to finalize the mix created a palpable excitement, an energy that can be felt throughout the record. Lines addresses living and loving within the complexities and challenges of everyday life in our fast-paced digital world.

Formed in 2009 by longtime collaborators Katie Haley (Holiday Flyer, California Oranges) and brothers Ross and Matt Levine (Welt, The Tank, California Oranges), the group was later joined by partners Tony and Becky Cale (English Singles, Arts & Leisure), and Hans Munz. With alluring vocals, two 12-string guitars, bass, drums, and synthesizers, the ensemble layers copious melodies, celestial harmonies, and propulsive rhythms with lush electronic soundscapes to create "a sound built to outlast trends" (Chicago Tribune). "It's not often you hear dream pop that's so devastatingly dynamic and driving" (The Big Takeover).

Sloppy Heads - Try Again.

The first single from Sloppy Heads' Sometimes Just One Second was a real ripper, pleasing from the first howl. The new one's got a stoned and sun-kissed psychedelia that makes it feel like the perfect high summer jam. I've been playing it on repeat and the pleasure gets deeper with each spin of the blissful and patiently dynamic 6-minute track.

The band says that "'Try Again' is a meditation on escaping the somnambulance of day-to-day life, of floating away on a breeze and viewing the world from a remove, at peace." Do yourself the pleasure.

I hear Sloppy Heads as situating somewhere in a brilliant constellation of spirited rock music adventurer stars like Half Japanese and The Vaselines and The  Fugs. The record features contributions from James McNew of Yo La Tengo across all tracks. This music is imbued with a sense of pure adventure and joy that is all at once familiar and totally refreshing. It's music made to be loved.

The Connells - Running Mary (Live Acoustic Version).

Craft Recordings is celebrating the 30th anniversary of The Connells’ breakthrough album, Ring, with its first widely available vinyl reissue and a bonus-filled CD. Today the group has also shared a previously unheard live acoustic version of “Running Mary” which is featured along with other recently discovered versions of tracks from Ring on this bonus-filled release.

"For me the songwriting process can be somewhat accidental..." writes guitarist and songwriter Mike Connell. "And often times, it's only long after the fact that I realize that I really like a song. That was the case with 'Running Mary.' It's become one of my favorite songs to perform live."

Long heralded as one of North Carolina’s most successful indie rock bands, The Connells carved out a niche for themselves in the early ‘90s alt-rock scene with their special brand of introspective jangle pop. The band was formed in Raleigh in the early to mid-80s by brothers Mike Connell (vocals, guitar) and David Connell (bass), and soon expanded to include Doug McMillan (vocals), Peele Wimberley (percussion), and George Huntley (guitar, vocals). They played their first show ever in September of 1984, and in 1986, the band released their debut LP, Darker Days, followed by the Mitch Easter-produced Boylan Heights (1987). They continued to build momentum, entering the Billboard 200 with 1989’s Fun & Games and 1990’s One Simple Word, and scoring a string of college radio hits like “Something to Say,” “Stone Cold Yesterday,” and “Get a Gun.”

Sneakpeek - The Kind Hills - Amon Tobin

Sneakpeek - Green Light.

Los Angeles-based psychedelic synth-pop duo Sneakpeek have shared a video for their single “Green Light.” The track is featured on their long-awaited sophomore album, Scene Within A Dream, which dropped earlier this summer.

Discussing the inspiration for “Green Light”, Sneakpeek’s Dora Hiller noted, "I was reflecting on an alien experience I had where I was camping in the middle of nowhere with some friends years ago, where we all saw a bright green shining orb. It circled all around us and then flew away insanely fast through the darkness."

Sneakpeek released their self-titled debut album in 2013 on Burger Records, with the LA Times hailing it as a, “noisy nine-track album offering up heavy, druggy guitar riffs that’d make Kurt Vile (or Lou Reed) proud.” While that record combined elements of dream pop with grungy, garage-rock sludge, Scene Within A Dream finds Hiller and Aric Bohn heading in new directions.

Surrounded by walls of synthesizers and vintage drum machines in their Glassell Park studio, Dora and Aric leaned into their psychedelic abandonments, pushing their mostly analogue gear to its limits. “We love obscure electronic music from the 70s, 80s + 90s,” notes Hiller, “and wanted to experiment with a new sound that embodied those elements but with our own spin on it.”

Throughout Scene Within A Dream, Sneakpeek explores the world of dreams, the mysteries of nature, mortality, magic and manifestation; old Hollywood studios, non linear timelines, synchronicity, and paranormal experiences, leading the listener out onto a surreal, dreamy dancefloor.

The Kind Hills - Clusterluck (Album).

The album Clusterluck by The Kind Hills features 10 warm and relaxed indie-tunes that are the perfect soundtrack for a chilled picnic in the countryside, an exhausted or hung-over moment in bed or a long, beautiful road trip.

The band call it 'music to fall asleep to' and they mean that in a positive way. Some influences are obvious (Beach House on ‘Summer’ or Ducktails on ‘Volunteer’) but on all tracks the band essentially plays their own, laid-back, dreamy indie pop. Standout tracks are 'waiting for the good times' and 'let youth take over'.

About The Kind Hills: Hailing from all corners of the globe, The Kind Hills stand as a testament to the transcendent power of music. The band, a cohort of long-standing friends who met while studying in Australia, now create captivating soundscapes from their respective homes worldwide. Their innovative approach to songwriting and recording has given rise to a deeply personal yet universally relatable body of work. The Kind Hills’ new album, Clusterluck, released on July 28, is a magnificent embodiment of this ethos.

Amon Tobin - Figueroa: Time Is On The Way.

When Amon Tobin released debut Figueroa album The World As We Know It on his Nomark label in 2020 Trebuchet magazine described it as a “landmark record” and the legendary writer Kris Needs wrote “Tobin has taken folk’s ongoing evolution and pushed it another giant step forwards.”

Now as that album celebrates its third birthday, there is a new Figueroa video being released this week as a taster of the second, as-yet-untitled album which is planned for next year.

The Hello Darlins - Clementine Valentine - Georgia Mooney - The Grahams - Shadwick Wilde

The Hello Darlins - Don't You Fall.

After making one of the biggest breakthroughs on the international Americana scene with their debut album Go By Feel, Canadian country/roots collective The Hello Darlins is gearing up to return with an even more ambitious collection of material for its official sophomore release, The Alders & The Ashes, due early in 2024.

The group, led by Romani-Canadian musician Candace Lacina and world-renowned Hammond B3 player Mike Little, The Hello Darlins consist of some of Canada’s most in-demand session musicians who came together to forge a distinct hybrid of country, gospel and blues. After three European Tours that included an Americanafest-UK showcase and a support slot with Lucinda Williams at the Paradiso in Amsterdam, as well as a 36-date cross-Canadian tour with blues-roots icon Matt Andersen with sold-out stops at Massey Hall and National Arts Centre along the way, The Hello Darlins are just getting started.

The latest taste of their new music is the single “Don’t You Fall,” an upbeat, radio-friendly track that showcases Candace’s unmistakable vocals. The song delivers a message to persevere through hard times by enjoying the wonder of life, and the love and support of those closest to us. “I wrote it after a dream,” Candace says. “I was watching someone have a conversation with an old tree and they were both saying the same thing to each another: ‘Hold on, friend. You’ve seen so much, but don’t resign, because there is still so much more.’”

The video for “Don’t You Fall” is a playful variation on the same theme. “As a society, we’re so obsessed with preserving our youth, but age is just a relative concept,” says Candace, who conceptualized and created the video based on animation techniques often used in children’s television programs from the 1960s and ‘70s. “Who didn’t love Romper Room, Mr. Dressup, Mr. Rogers, or Sesame Street,” she says. “Kindergarten is the age of innocence and imagination—you never think about getting old when you’re five.”

Clementine Valentine - The Rope.

Clementine Valentine, the Coromandel-based art-pop duo formerly known as Purple Pilgrims, share a new single ‘The Rope’ off their upcoming album, The Coin that Broke the Fountain Floor, out August 25th via Flying Nun Records. To celebrate the album's release, the duo will perform four intimate shows around the country this September as well as a show in August alongside Roy Montgomery for the Christchurch WORD festival.

Following their previous album singles ‘Endless Night’ and ‘Time and Tide’, the new single ‘The Rope’ is a captivating siren song, that entices the listener, inviting them into a world of both safety and potential darkness. Produced by Randall Dunn — known for his work with acclaimed artists like Björk, Oneohtrix Point Never and Jim Jarmusch —the track features expressive percussion by Matt Chamberlain, who’s worked with the likes of Lana Del Rey, David Bowie, Fiona Apple to name a few

The accompanying visuals, directed by the Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland-based duo PICTVRE (Veronica Crockford-Pound and Joseph Griffen) and made with the support of NZ on Air, draw inspiration from 1960s films such as Jean-Luc Godard's sci-fi/noir classic 'Alphaville' and Ingmar Bergman's psychological drama 'Persona'. Styled by Tom So, the duo wears all local designers including Emma Jing, Wynn Hamlyn, and Shannen Young. Makeup and hair styling by Kiekie Stanners and Vanessa Mitchell.

Georgia Mooney - Nothing Is Forever.

‘Nothing Is Forever’ takes off like a train in both sound and spirit; an anthemic slice of triumphant alt-folk that will resonate with fans of First Aid Kit and Courtney Marie Andrews with its tumbling drums, potent trumpets, and lush, swelling open chords in a widescreen arrangement featuring dulcimer, mandolin, harmonium, trombone, guitars and bass.

Penned at a high point of the #MeToo movement, the track remains startlingly relevant with its shots at the kind of misogynist that poses as enlightened; “arguably the most damaging type of sexist… the wolf in sheep’s clothing” affirms Mooney, and is ultimately an aspirational call-to-arms that she says promises “Nothing is forever, not even the patriarchy.”

This evocative tone is shared by the track’s cinematic visuals, directed by Nick Mckk (Kate Miller-Heidke, Jen Cloher, Alice Skye) on the land of the Dharug and Gundungurra people in the so-called Blue Mountains. Characterized by sweeping cinematography and long, slow zooms, the video finds Mooney and her dulcimer in an ethereal, serene state against a backdrop of majestic ancient trees, rocks, and waterfalls - a perfect visual complement to the inherent drama of the single.

Of the video, Mooney says “With dulcimer in tow, Nick and I scrambled through bush and fell (literally) into creeks, finding captivating and evocative places for me to perch, strum and sing into the trees. We started at noon and by nightfall had explored waterfalls, valleys, and watched the sunset over the treetops. I enjoyed the contrast of singing ‘Nothing Is Forever’ in an environment so ancient. One wonders how many people and birds have sung to those trees. The video became a love letter to that part of the world, which of course I hope is forever.”

The Grahams - Glory Bound.

The Grahams have shared their uplifting anthem “Glory Bound,” the next offering from the duo’s upcoming self-titled album, out September 8 via 3Sirens Music Group. Arriving with a golden-hued music video showcasing the importance of family and love, this meditative song finds The Grahams reflecting on life’s journey, regrets and all, with bright eyes toward a hopeful future. “Glory Bound” was recently featured by Magnet Magazine and is one of ten reimaginings slated to appear on The Grahams, which sees the duo revisiting fan favorites to reflect their artistic growth over the last decade. The Grahams is now available for pre-order.

“On ‘Glory Bound,’ what was once a bold, from-the-chest manifesto becomes a shimmering reflection on hope and regret, building around a subtle, hypnotizing riff,” shares Alyssa Graham, who is one half of The Grahams with Doug Graham. “Listening back to my approach, originally and now, I'm a different person. You can hear it in my voice.”

“Glory Bound” follows the serotonin-boosting “The Wild One,” which was praised by the The Alternate Root, Americana UK, Americana Music Association and more upon its release. On The Grahams, the duo pays homage to a fulfilled commitment they made a decade ago: three concept albums over 10 years, which found them exploring America and its rich tapestry of music. The new self-titled album takes 10 songs from The Grahams’ catalog and pours them through a new filter – what they’ve learned, how they’ve changed, and perhaps most centrally, how they sound today. While these songs bear some resemblance to their Americana roots, they lean harder in a new direction, weaving threads of the duo’s other influences: the bands they grew up with, the input of collaborators, and the ever-evolving love affair that now includes their child. Track by track, the changes are transformative, stripping the songs down in some cases and dressing them up in others.

Shadwick Wilde - Without You.

Shadwick Wilde has released "Without You," the second single from his upcoming solo record Forever Home, produced by renowned Nashville drummer Ken Coomer (Billy Bragg, Will Hoge, Margo Price, Vance Joy, Al Green, Wilco and Uncle Tupelo), available everywhere September 22nd.

“Without You” is an existentialist love ballad… examining the frailty of memory, the truth of impermanence, and our clinging to one another. Wilde, who lives with major depressive disorder, is a self-described Buddhist-Nihilist, but credits meditation, therapy and a focus on compassion and presence to saving his life. The recording of this album was a practice in surrender for Shadwick… Coomer pushed for live recording and minimal takes to preserve the spontaneity of the creative process, and to let the songs unfold on their own.

“Without You” was the first song recorded live as a group with Shadwick on guitar, Coomer on Drums, and Ted Pecchio on Bass. Sam Wilson was brought in to add some beautifully tasteful guitar work, and Shadwick overdubbed piano and synthesizer parts, resulting in a beautiful rich orchestration to juxtapose the song’s darker subject matter.

TANDM - T.G. Shand - Jay Wood - Cara Hammond - Moving Into Tucson

TANDM - Sirens (Album).

On the surface, they’re charming in their sweet simplicity – effortlessly compelling thanks to graceful melodies, heartfelt lyricism, and syncopated synergy. But the deeper you dig, the more Toronto duo TANDM’s songs seem to transcend time, place, and even stylistic categorization. The core duo of vocalist/guitarist Maxine Beck-Sinderby and drummer Thomas Franklin first met in their mid-teens and quickly united over a unique creative chemistry.

Their new collection, Sirens, finds the duo teeing up their most engaging and enveloping output to date – a potent distillation of the magical individual components that comprise TANDM’s masterful take on alternative pop but with a newfound polish and elevated production style. The rhythms are entrancing and engaging, drawing the listener into a warm, dreamlike world of stirring melodic dynamism and delicate-but-dauntless vocals.

The title track, “Sirens,” blasts the hopefulness and excitement of youth, with lyrics referencing the Greek myths of Odysseus and Icarus. TANDM describe the painful truths of growing up, independence and severing the connection from family.

“I have always tried to tell a lesson or a story in our music,” says Maxine. “With our first two EPs, the majority of our songs were about teenagehood, with many of the themes touching on negative experiences of growing up. With this upcoming EP Sirens, the music is much more about the transition, post teenage angst. The upcoming songs are about the progress and the ‘moving on’ of past troubles, and how we overcame them. Consider it a sequel to our previous chapter.”

Jay Wood - Initial Pulse.

West Australian alt-indie acoustic singer-songwriter, Jay Wood unleashed her eagerly awaited single, 'Initial Pulse' on Friday, July 28th, 2023. This release marks the second single from her upcoming EP, 'Respire,' scheduled for release on 1st September. Jay Wood's latest single promises to captivate audiences with its heartfelt lyrics, soothing melodies, and profound messaging.

Produced, mixed, and mastered by the talented team at Norman Solander Studios, 'Initial Pulse' holds a special place in Jay Wood's heart as it represents her personal journey of rediscovering life and falling in love. “This song was the first song I painstakingly managed to write after a long-time re-learning how to play my instruments post-accident” – Jay Wood

After a long period of re-learning to play her instruments following a life-altering accident and a Catastrophic Traumatic Brain Injury, Jay Wood poured her emotions into this song, depicting the joy and excitement of new love, with ‘love’ representing a deeper meaning of life itself. The title 'Initial Pulse' symbolises those first beats of the heart when encountering someone who sparks a newfound love and rejuvenates life—a fresh start filled with hope and anticipation.

Jay Wood's music is an embodiment of her life experiences and her unique ability to connect with listeners on an intimate level. Her skilful lyricism, passionate vocals, and humble demeanour allow her to effortlessly tug on heartstrings - offering insight into her own soul as well as encouraging reflection upon one's own life experiences. Jay's unique thoughts about love, life and everything in-between come alive through honest yet unconventional and at times "in your face" lyrics which touch audiences deeply.

With 'Initial Pulse' and her 1st September forthcoming EP, ‘Respire’, Jay Wood invites listeners on a journey of self-discovery, love, and the pursuit of happiness. Her music serves as a reminder that we each possess the power to shape our own destinies and find fulfilment no matter the obstacles life presents us with.

Cara Hammond - America.

'America' is Cara Hammond's second self produced single of 2023. Influenced by Lana Del Reyand Fleetwood Mac, America is a summer anthem about what happens after theAmerican dream. Country guitar slides, gospel organ and 60s girl group harmoniesblend together in creating a classic Americana sound that slowly disintegrates viaharmonic shifts.

I wrote America after returning from showcasing at SXSW 2022. At the beginning of 2022 I’d been dropped by my label & left my management, so when I was invited to play this huge festival in Austin, Texas, I couldn’t have been happier.

I spent all my time practicing, planning and emailing industry in the lead up that I didn’t give anything else much thought. SXSW was a dream so when it ended, I landed home with a bump. The weeks after that I felt very lost and unsure what my next step was. Luckily songwriting held the answer and America was born on a rainy day in Dolgellau, North Wales.

Moving Into Tucson - Moving Into Tucson.

Hey, come along. We are Moving Into Tucson. There is no stopping us, so join us on our trip. All we wanna do is bring joy, happiness and good music to this world. Now, who can argue with that? No-one can! Not even your most bitter critic.

And here it is. Single number 3. It doesn’t matter if you’re young or old. Anyone will dig the message. This tune is just to cool to ignore. The beat is wild, the harmonies are high. Mr. Tambourine Man is going to get ya. Just think of the Byrd that wouldn’t fly and it all makes sense to you. So, if you ever thought about Moving Into Tucson, this is your chance!

Moving Into Tucson is for fans of: REM, Lemonheads, Sugar, The Posies, Buffalo Tom, Teenage Fanclub and the Counting Crows but also reminiscent to bands as U2 or The Police. Contemporary indie pop rock with an early 90s sound, sometimes dark, sometimes mysterious, or vague, but with depth in the music and certainly in the lyrics.

Vines - Nora Kelly Band - Brewflies - The Vanrays

Photo - Anna Longworth
Vines - The World At Large.

Brooklyn composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Cassie Wieland has released the third single, a cover of Modest Mouse's "The World At Large," from her upcoming debut LP as Vines.

In 2022, Wieland began covering popular indie songs using her vocoder as a side project, unearthing the emotions lying inside of these tracks. “The World at Large” is just one example of her contemplative reimaginings. Throughout her cover of Modest Mouse’s 2004 hit, Wieland softens each beat, slowing down each peppy “ah” into a pensive hum. The song takes on themes of drifting and running away, and in Wieland’s gossamer threads, heart-wrenching simplicity amplifies its melancholy to unveil the existentialism that colors the music.

The single follows "january" and "I don't mind," the latter of which Stereogum likened to "Imogen Heap’s “Hide And Seek,” with traces of Sigur Rós, Bon Iver, and various electronic singer-composer types a la Lydia Ainsworth and Laurel Halo." Vines' full album, titled Birthday Party, will be out August 18th.

On Birthday Party, Brooklyn-based composer Cassie Wieland (aka Vines) braids poignant, rich instrumentals with sparing lyrics. It’s a new, deeply personal direction for the composer, whose previous music was primarily written for others to play. Here, her own voice, diffused by the feathery touch of a vocoder, is front and center; her economical words stem from the loneliness you might feel on your birthday, where long gone memories and nostalgia feel their most acute. From these thoughts, Wieland weaves lush, contemplative tapestries, finding catharsis in fuzzed-out melodies.

Nora Kelly Band - Horse Girl.

With their latest single, “Horse Girl,” the Nora Kelly Band tell the tale of an urban cowgirl. Featured on their upcoming debut album Rodeo Clown, due out August 25 via Mint Records, the Montreal quintet premiered a video for the track via Under the Radar, who said, "Kelly’s lyrics namedrop Hank Williams and Townes Van Zandt and the band echos those vintage country touchstones, soaking the track in keening pedal steel, sweet vocal harmonies, and a heady dust-tinged haze." Rodeo Clown was written by Nora Kelly, produced by Kelly with Ethan Soil, and mixed by Pietro Amato (The Luyas/Belle Orchestre).
Having completed a run of Pacific Northwest dates earlier this month, the Nora Kelly Band head out along the East Coast in August, including a hometown release night celebration at La Sala Rossa.

Discussing “Horse Girl", Nora noted,  "When I started writing country music a few years ago, I arrived with a deep appreciation for the genre and history. Still, I live in Montreal, where I earned a Fine Arts degree. I’m not trying to fool anyone. I’m no ‘Okie from Muskogee’ or ‘Coal Miner’s Daughter'. But I’m not the first city slicker to love playing ‘cowboy’ either. In writing ‘Horse Girl’ it felt good to just come out with it… ‘I always tip my waiter but I’ve never tipped a cow’ and ‘I could ride the range but I don’t know how.’

Maybe this is the Nora Kelly Band’s theme song. It definitely was a group effort. I delivered the lyrics and vocal melody to the band, and more than any other track we really workshopped the music together. The result feels fresh and playfully new.”

Regarding the video, Kelly added, “We shot the video for ‘Horse Girl’ at a county fair in Ormstown, Quebec. Our day began at 9am at a horse competition. With each member of the band making bets on which horse would be voted best in show - Vader inexplicably chose correctly every time. After, we witnessed a demolition derby where young men in broken down cars slammed into each other, with firefighters and ambulances waiting on the sidelines. We also rode fair rides and played carnival games. Because the director and cinematographer were carrying a big camera, we looked like we were up to something important and this served its purpose. When it came time to shoot my close up on the ferris wheel, the ride attendant let us on for free and didn’t make us get off for a good 20 minutes.”

Brewflies - Anything is Possible.

Brewflies released “Anything is Possible” a few days ago. The song written by Michael Veitch derives from his participation in the PBS Songs of Survivor project which paired songwriters with Holocaust survivors.

The song tells the story of a young boy’s escape after witnessing the rounding up of Jewish people into concentration camps. It starts from the harrowing revelation of the depths of the “possibility” of Nazi depravity and inhuman brutality of unimaginable proportions (that “anything IS possible and nothing is impossible) and immediately proposes the limitless hope of overcoming this dire possibility by taking “one step” toward freedom (“He told me just one step could start a road…”).

Brittain says, “We included the song because of its relevance now, too; it points to the possibility in our time that a microbe could bring a ‘sophisticated’ techno-scientific society and economy to its knees (a stark reminder that NOTHING is impossible)…and yet-actually overcoming that threat IS also, it turns out, a real possibility.”

The song features Kirsti Gholson on lead vocals and background harmonies, Billy Clockel on bass, Larry Brittain on acoustic & electric guitars, Gary Oleyar on violin, and Dan Hickey on drums.

The album documents Brewflies Covid-19 experience through interpretations of noteworthy songs representing the period. Artists represented on the album include Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, and Mary Gauthier, and three original songs by their musical soulmate and collaborator, Michael Veitch.

The Vanrays - Put It Out (Album).

The Vanrays have just released their latest long-player “Put It Out” with an accompanying video for the album’s focus track “Hard Times.” The band carries on with their tradition of belting out undeniably catchy Motown and Soul tunes with big hooks, big melodies and an even bigger brass section. Taking notes from classics and contemporaries like Spencer Davis group, Detroit Cobras, Curtis Harding and the Daptone Records roster, The Vanrays have delivered an album of soulful classic R&B and garage music.

Their bio reads like a manifesto for their brand of music: It’s a Motown beat down in a sharkskin suit. It's wailing like it’s gospel while they're laying in the boots. It's a curb stomping rhythm on the corner of control. It's a nod in the direction, when all shoes had leather souls. And to when those shoes were twisting, to Otis and to James. And so now do, The Vanrays too, we are here to do the same.

The video for “Hard Times” was directed by Carleen Kyle and shot at the Wise Hall during the pandemic and in the middle of the heat dome. Piano and organ player Gordon Rempel describes the scenario, “We were happy for the space and air conditioning! The objective was to bring a more intimate “performance” video than a regular live video. Thus, setting the performance on the floor rather than the stage.”

Overall the album touches on themes of love and heartache which seems to tie the songs together. Bassist Phil Adington laments, “We never intended for this to be a concept album, but for me all of the songs involve love and relationships and the order they appear on the record does seem to map out a passionate, tempestuous affair that ultimately ends in heartbreak." The recording sessions for Put it Out began just before the onset of the pandemic, when the world went into lockdown. Rempel reflected on the time by saying, “It's been a journey. We were forced to adapt. With only bed tracks recorded before the lockdown, we were forced to improvise. We remotely finished a couple songs as demos compete with Zoom-like videos that we released as "The Social Distanced Demos" on Bandcamp.

Slowly, we completed recording the album, instrument by instrument together and apart. I recorded many of my organ and piano parts in my garage studio. Others ventured into Brian’s studio to record their parts with masks and social distancing. Scott Fletcher, producer of the Put It Out shared his take on the experience, “My shared vision as producer of this record was to tip our collective hat to the classic 60s and 70s Soul and R&B from stax records, without being a museum piece. Music is an organic, living, growing thing and I truly believe we took this genre to a new place. Recording a 9 piece band is no easy task at the best of times, but we tried to preserve the “live off the floor” feel while staying socially distanced in the studio. The Vanrays, needless to say, became my bubble. If I were to put it in a nutshell, I would say recording Put It Out got us through the tense times of the pandemic.”

Chloey Rose - desert life - Deidre & the Dark & Violet Sands - Sara Noelle - After The Flesh - Zola Courtney

Chloey Rose - Shot You Down.

Delivering powerful pop songs with a theatrical twist, Chloey Rose has been captivating audiences at major venues up and down the UK and in Europe with her dramatic, soaring vocals that have attracted comparisons to Adele and Paloma Faith.

Drawing inspiration from Kate Bush and Taylor Swift, Chloey has just released brand new single ‘Shot You Down’, an edgy pop ballad full of dark sounds that could become the theme tune for the next James Bond Movie.

‘Shot You Down’ follows the story of being in an unhealthy relationship and the strength it can take to walk away. Written by Chloey Rose and produced by Aron Bicskey, the track builds from smoky late night piano atmospheres to become a powerful anthem for getting up again once you’ve been cut down, with a nod to Nancy Sinatra’s classic track ‘Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)’.

As a songwriter, Rose’s debut single ‘Golden Dreams’ was released in 2016, followed by a string of singles including ‘Hearts On The Line’, which was named Track Of The Week on BBC Radio Lincolnshire and A Best Track of 2021. Not only, a talented singer-songwriter, Rose was a finalist in Miss Lincolnshire in 2018/19 and has also been cutting her acting chops, with the leading role as Ruth Ellis in ‘The Thrill of Love’ and as Leading lady Nina in the BBC’s ‘First World War Musical Show’, amongst numerous other stage and TV appearances.

The video for ‘Shot You Down’ (to be unveiled in the coming weeks) sees Chloey on neon-lit streets in the twilight hours as she searches for answers. The track weaves its hypnotic repeating refrains around her, growing and growing with intensity as she works through her emotions. “I’ll paint your name all over this town”, Chloey sings in this epically woven ballad which combines big production values with raw feelings to really work its way under the listener’s skin.

desert life - I Don’t Wanna Know.

Alt-folk/Americana artist, desert life, released their single “I don’t wanna know” a week ago.  Their first release in 4 years, it includes Jon Graboff (Ryan Adams and the Cardinals, Norah Jones, Willy Nelson and Noel Gallagher) on Pedal steel guitar.  It’s a song that sounds as if it was written on the back roads of Nashville, rather than near the sandy beaches of Tenby.  The upbeat acoustic guitar and soaring lap steel guitar, makes you want to put on cowboy boots, rather than a wetsuit.  The song is the tale of how a man's heart sank as he received word of his ex-girlfriend's newfound love.

Desert Life is the moniker of Chris Swales, a Pontypridd born, Tenby based alt-folk / singer-songwriter, and multi instrumentalist, Tom Jordan.  Conceived in 2018, Chris originally released material in a ‘bedroom artist’ guise following an off-the-cuff collaboration with poet Brian ‘Old Pa’ Mackenzie.  Then when Chris started playing the material live, he met Tom at some local open mic events, and quickly realised that they had a strong musical connection and expanded into a duo..

They blend Americana/Alt-folk music with songs that contain imagery of hope, loss and isolation, yet do not take themselves too seriously.  Comparisons to Bon Iver, Jeff Tweedy and Ryan Adams can be heard in some of their songs, yet, the next moment you might think you’re listening to the sonic landscapes of Calexico.

They have played throughout West Wales, at The Swansea Fringe Festival and Lush.  Their first-ever release ‘Not my girl’ was aired by BBC Wales’ Adam Walton via BBC Introducing.  ‘Whisper to the Wind’ won a Syncr Music Competition, and ‘My darling friend’ was the runner-up in the Radio Wigwam’s ‘best single’ category.  They also made the Record Store Day 'Unsigned (2019) long list'.

Deidre & the Dark & Violet Sands - Desert Rental Home.

Were more than happy to feature the new single and collaboration from Brooklyn based Violet Sands and Deidre & the Dark. Deidre & the Dark is the solo project of Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter Deidre Muro (previously founding front-woman of Savoir Adore). Violet Sands is a sonic trio made up of long-time collaborators Deidre Muro, Derek Muro, and David Perlick-Molinari (French Horn Rebellion).

On “Desert Rental Home,” these two creative forces dance together on the only song Deidre was able to write during the pandemic lockdown in 2020. “During months of quarantine, this was the one song that managed to come out of me. I was feeling very isolated at home with my 1 year-old son while David, my husband, kept our business afloat, working out of a makeshift bedroom studio, for most of the hours of most of the days.

Delusion starts creeping in when you’re unsure how long this will be reality.” Intimate moments of acoustic guitar and voice quickly transform into a grandiose fantasy, soaring and sparkling, while a lurching synth bass hints at the uneasy nature of an escapist dream.

After The Flesh - Changeling.

On the heels of their self-titled 4-song EP in May 2023, After the Flesh from Wellington, New Zealand, share ‘Changeling’: the EP’s captivating new video-single, which just made its international debut on Friday via Europe’s legendary Side-Line Magazine. The band’s sound skilfully brings together elements of ethereal gothic dreampop, new wave, post-punk, and modern dark alternative rock.

Formed on the approaches to 2020, After the Flesh showcases the talents of Slovenian-born vocalist and keyboardist Maruša Sagadin (“Marusha”); guitarist and vocalist Alec Morris; veteran local bassist Duncan Nairn; and later addition Sam Leamy on drums.

The new ‘Changeling’ video is filmed and directed by Martin Sagadin (sibling of Maruša), who explains: “After the Flesh asked me to do a video after we did a photo shoot at the Pūtangirua Pinnacles, where we were in the harsh daylight among the cliffs. We decided the next project would be very glamorous, dramatic and interior, layered in plastic and projection, while paying tribute to some of our favourite New Wave music videos…”

Zola Courtney - California.

Credible British Songwriter Zola Courtney shares an incredibly heartswelling moment and single called “California.” With vocals and writing that swoon, It’s a song fitting for an epic movie montage where flashing memories turn into poetic music between that post break-up ‘what have I done’ and the affirmation phases.

Speaking about the song, Zola explains “California was written in the early stages, during the ‘what have I done’ phase of the breakup. I kept thinking about specific moments in the relationship that had meant a huge amount to me.”

“I did a writing trip to California when I was 19 and had a really awful time. My boyfriend   at the timeflew out to be with me and I’m still so grateful he did that. That was near the beginning of our relationship and New York was the last place we visited together. The song talks about these bookend moments, as well as feelings of doubt and regret, but also care and admiration for him and all the things we did together.”

Zola Courtney today returns to releasing music after playing extensive shows across the county since her last single.  The last single from her debut EP “Nothing To Lose” saw the talented Cornwall native garner withspread support from BBC Radio 1 specialist DJs, and  was later added to their playlist and onto their One Big Weekend festival line-up. She's also enjoyed online tastemaker support from the likes of Complex, Milk.xyz, Clash, Notion & Wonderland to name but a few.

Tamar Berk - Chonna - Jess Nolan - Mull Historical Society

Tamar Berk - if u know, u know.

Noted indie darling Tamar Berk is excited to share “if u know, u know”, the second single from her upcoming third album tiny injuries, out August 18th. The new single “if u know, u know” comes on the heels of last month’s first single “drop in the bucket”.

"If u know, u know" utilizes Tamar Berk's spirited vocals to explore existential crises caused by loss, reminiscent of Soccer Mommy, Aimee Mann, and Liz Phair for an alternative pop edge.

In describing the new track, Tamar Berk writes: “I recently learned that we are always mourning something...a child leaving home, houses, cities, jobs, friends, marriage, a death, ourselves...our youth." Getting older has its advantages...but what I dislike most is how long the list of things I mourn has become. When you know, you know."

Her lyrics hint at her existential crisis, where she's still coping with feelings of confusion, isolation and dislocation after her dad's absence: "The sun comes up but I'm already down/Wander from room to room, but you're nowhere to be found."

Chonna - Teach Me.

Indie-soul singer songwriter Chonna is proud to release her new single "Teach Me".

Chonna is gearing up to release her forthcoming LP “Don’t Judge” later this year, which trapezes complexities of life such as self-acceptance, growth, and human relationships. The first taste of the album,  "Teach Me"  accurately represents the different types of seeds required to plant a healthy partnership. Another underlying theme the track uncovers is the struggle to fully accept and love oneself.

Recorded at The Music Vault Academy in Orange County, "Teach Me" trades out a more conventional song approach for a stripped down ballad setting. Underneath a strong piano motif and choir-like backup vocals, Chonna’s emotional lyrics glisten. In addition, a bouncy guitar riff wiggles its way in at certain parts of the track, adding a funklike vibe to the aforementioned atmosphere.

Chonna’s musical endeavors continue to stray towards healing and self-discovery, and her songs are open invites for others to embark on that journey with her. On "Teach Me", the concept of self-love is vitalized. The uplifting track showcases the doubts and uncertainties present when entering a new relationship, and hopes to normalize these feelings. Sonically, Chonna’s unique vocal timbre is reminiscent of Sigrid and Anna of the North.

Jess Nolan - Windowpanes.

Nashville-based singer-songwriter Jess Nolan has released “Windowpanes,” the latest single and its hypnotic, accompanying video from her forthcoming LP, ‘93. The 10-track treasure is due on September 8th via Ani DiFranco’s label, Righteous Babe Records.

"Back in the summer of 2021, I picked up an old beater guitar that had been collecting dust on my wall. I’ve been a piano player my whole life but something about strumming in open tuning helped me tap into a childlike state to channel 'Windowpanes,'” Nolan recalls. “It came through after a heated phone call with a friend about a political topic that we vehemently disagreed on. Talking to them felt like hitting a brick wall.”

“This song is meant to be a meditation for finding common ground. It’s become a white flag for the difficult conversations we find ourselves in with people close to us. Empathy can be a window to understanding,” she adds. “To record it, I brought in my dear friends, Katie Pruitt and Kyshona, and we stood around one mic to sing the chorus - a call for unity in the face of so much divisiveness." The video was created by fellow artist Grouch Bucket, who animated Nolan’s visual art.

Nolan is an old soul and a skilled creator who continuously channels a palate of creative endeavors. A member of Jenny Lewis’ all-female touring band, she is an in-demand collaborator, lending her writing, vocal, and instrumentalist talents to projects by artists like Joy Oladokun, Katie Pruitt, Lydia Luce, and more.

The seeds of her new LP, ’93, sprouted in the height of 2020. In the midst of the initial involuntary stillness, she planted a backyard vegetable garden, moved her involvement in mentoring young female songwriters online, and traveled back to her New Jersey hometown to stay with family for weeks at a time. In the face of uncertainty, strong, deeply-rooted feelings came pouring out, resulting in 10 poignant reflections on rebirth, reconnection, and mindfulness.

Mull Historical Society - Panicked Feathers.

On what will be his first album since 2018’s ‘Wakelines’, Colin MacIntyre’s upcoming album ‘In My Mind There’s A Room’ was written in collaboration with thirteen world-renowned authors; each of whom were asked to write about a room of special significance to them.

Enlisting the talents of Nick Hornby, an author whose passion for music is well-documented across his bestselling pop-fiction classics like ‘High Fidelity’, ‘Juliet, Naked’ and ‘About A Boy’, the pair’s meeting of minds has produced the anthemic new song “Panicked Feathers”.

Written by Hornby (with additional music and lyrics added by MacIntyre), the single transports the listener back to his teenage bedroom through lyrics laced with the mischief and adventure of self-discovery and coming of age.

Remembering that room in “Panicked Feathers”, Nick writes: “Outside my bedroom there was a flat roof // The garage roof where cats came through // My bedroom sat at the top // And sometimes they’d bring birds dead or dying // And sometimes they would drag them in // Over my teenage face // But who knows with cats with cats? // And I learned to climb // Outside of that window // With a friend we’d smoke outside // Dangled legs in the sun on the roof // Imagining the world was smaller than us…”
