The Blue Nile - Manchester 1991.

This is The Blue Nile in concert back on the 13th September 1991 at the Free Trade Hall, Manchester, England.

The band was formed in 1981 when Paul Buchanan  and his friend, Robert Bell, met Paul Joseph Moore after graduating from the University of Glasgow in the late 1970s. Although their individual degrees didn't reflect their future career wishes (English Literature, Electronics and Mathematics, respectively), their mutual friendship grew out of their shared interest in music, and they began writing and recording together. The music of The Blue Nile is built heavily on synthesizers and electronic instrumentation and percussion, although later works have featured acoustic guitar more prominently. The band have only produced four albums and large gaps between recording and touring has always been the norm for this band.

For over thirty years and through four, magical records, the tale of The Blue Nile has wound inexorably through the highest acclaim and the gravest misfortune, past record company ineptitude and personal disasters, taking in Top 20 albums and winning a fanatical word-of-mouth fanbase along the way a fanbase which includes Annie Lennox, Peter Gabriel and Rod Stewart. Their songs have been covered by a diverse array of talent Tom Jones, Isaac Hayes, Melanie C, Michael McDonald, Julian Lennon, Zucchero, Joe Cocker, Chris Botti as well as the aforementioned Lennox and Stewart.

Few people own just one Blue Nile album generally you will either own them all and still play them on a regular basis or have never heard of The Blue Nile. Their music has been described as ambient folk, electronic pop and 4am songs, none of which truly gets near what The Blue Nile are about. Essentially, The Blue Nile create songs about the day to day life of pretty much everyone who has ever been in love or who has ever looked out at the rain on a cold winter day or who has ever struggled to work on a bus which gets stuck in traffic, and they sprinkle each song with something special that lifts it out of the ordinary. As singer Paul Buchanan says, its always been a documentary of the imagination

2010FM - April Edition One.

A slight change for this edition with all the music streamed at the bottom in one player. Details of each featured track are mentioned with each artist.

Hidden Shoal Recordings recently announced the release of the single ‘The Green’ by American ambient experimental pop duo Boxharp. For those new to the band, Boxharp are Scott Solter (producer/engineer for the likes of Spoon, The Mountain Goats  and St. Vincent) and Wendy Allen (Tarentel and The Ballustrade Ensemble).

The title track from their forthcoming album, ‘The Green’ sees Boxharp perhaps clarify what spacious astral pop sounds like. The song is a splendid and gentle presentation of quality pop with the multi-tracked vocals of Wendy Allen, ‘The Green’is a great introduction for the forthcoming album and has got Beehive Candy very interested in hearing more.

The band was recently featured on David Bowie's official website after previously being chosen by Bowie in an article in British newspaper The Guardian as one of his current favourite artists, which makes for a pretty big reference indeed!

We have featured Julian Shah-Tayler before here on Beehive Candy and having listened to his latest EP 'Blah Blah Blahnik' are delighted to do so for a second time.

Julian is one busy individual, having recently been interviewed by E!, featured in the Huffington Post and performing as part of his ongoing residency with Macy Gray and Rolan Bolan at Prince's favourite Hollywood haunt, Bardot. He has also seen his songs featured in three independent films: "Whip It" (Whitey), "Youthful Journeys", "Prudence" and he also soundtracked an Australian Television show: "West Coast Diaries". He also signed a publishing deal for the debut album of his band "Adamandevil" His new live band debuted for Angie Bowie and Roy Rogers at their enormously successful Haiti benefit show.

He has also been invited to perform this summer in Manila for Imelda Marcos as part of an art extravaganza based on her infamous shoe collection. This was the inspiration behind the lead off track on his new solo EP "Blah Blah Blahnik" - "Show Me Your Soul" (spot the play on words).

OK you may ask but what about the music? Well I have to say having been very impressed with the last release, this latest offering is perhaps even stronger. Great songs, and excellent musicianship and production make Julian a likely contender for much bigger status in the music industry. The song's Electricity & Blood Destiny have to be my favorite's on the EP, lets hope they reach a much wider audience.

Fans of rock and dance music alike have New York City duo Streetlab to thank for creating catchy and danceable versions of some of their favorite tunes. Since 2001, friends Mark “Cosmo” Lamorg and Ryan Leary have been exploring the pastiche between classic rock tunes and their rump-shaking potential with an irresistible formula for electronic remixes. After years of re-inventing popular tracks such as The Rolling Stones’ “Gimme Shelter” and Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Fortunate Son” the pair began venturing into writing original material, including “NYSound,” a single that has generated a considerable buzz and coverage since its 2008 release.  Since gaining the support of various top-notch radio DJs and record labels, and receiving praise from media outlets from the likes of Billboard Magazine and URB.com, Streetlab is gearing up to release its full-length debut.

Influenced by the music scene of the early 90’s, Lamorg and Leary started out remixing classic rock songs, creating tracks that defied the boundaries of music genre and ended up appealing to both rockers and club-goers. Their early remixes caught the attention of BBC Radio1’s Annie Nightingale, and in 2002, inspired indie-rock label Kanine Records to solicit the duo to contribute remixes of tracks by Mixel Pixel and Professor Murder. Astralwerks and Invisible Records followed suit, adding Streetlab mixes to their repertoires. The talented duo spent the next few years teaming up with New York DJs and club promoters, remixing tracks for Parisian acts PlayGround and Thieves Like Us, and creating their own versions of songs made famous by everyone from Nine Inch Nails and Hot Chip to Led Zeppelin and Bob Marley.

With a endless list of remixes and a growing collection of original material to their name, Streetlab is gearing up to unleash a whirlwind of new songs with a slew of acclaimed vocalists. They’re latest single “Rat Racer” is available on iTunes and will be the first single off of the debut full-length album set for release on April 20, 2010.

Already the first French act to score a number one record in France with an album sung in English, The Dø are set to release A Mouthful in the US today (April 6th) via Six Degrees Records, complete with three bonus tracks.

Running the full musical gamut, A Mouthful deftly channels the melodic and vocal stylings of Nina Persson, the sharp and bouncy guitar jangle of contemporary indie rock, a touch of folk intimacy and even some wistful hints of summer Tropicalia. The Dø are French/Finnish vocalist and guitarist Olivia Merilahti and multi instrumentalist Dan Levy. As NME states, The Dø have created “something genuinely captivating. [A Mouthful] tastes real good.” It does indeed.

Communist Daughter have a new release 'Soundtrack to the End' which is due out today (April 6th), via Grain Belt Records.

Three years ago John Solomon walked away from music. After struggling with addiction and brief stints in jail, with great sadness he dissolved his critically acclaimed band Friends Like These, and moved to a small town in Wisconsin, trying to get away from it all.  And that was that – or so he thought.

After Solomon decided that he had to leave music, he painfully learned that the music never left him. After his prolonged hiatus he called some old friends, inviting them to picturesque Prescott, Wisconsin, where they made a demo album that proved once-and-for-all that the music was his everything.

Steve Yasgar, the former drummer of The Swiss Army and Roma di Luna, Jonathan Blaseg of The Blinds, and former Friends Like These comrade Adam Switlick convened in Prescott on the Saint Croix, where John had serendipitously met Molly Moore. With her contributions, the muse took flight and resulted in their latest groundbreaking album, Soundtrack to the End.

With Soundtrack to the End, Solomon and company have reclaimed their spot in the music world with a soulful style that is writhing with the visceral, the real, and the romantic. Glowing reviews have come from critics all over: some that remember Solomon and company from Friends Like These, and others meeting them for the first time. A reinvigorated Solomon has assembled a record that demands attention.

The Disappeared contacted Beehive Candy a week or so ago and in a very polite and friendly email asked us to give them a listen.

They went on to say 'We are a four piece group from Manchester called The Disappeared. We believe that music, politics and intelligence do mix well together. Although we've only been formed for a year, we think we're getting our own sound together'.

Well yesterday I was going through a load of new songs some of which are featured today and I was really surprised with these guys. Half expecting something that immediately reminded me of half a dozen other bands, The Disappeared reminded me of only one (and I am keeping that to myself). There is a strong enough individual identity within their music along with clear Manchester accents for these folk to deserve attenion in their own right.

Finally for this edition, when I received a promo for Leo Blais telling me one of his songs was used as a soundtrack in a Dunkin Donuts commercial I really could not get excited. Maybe it's a personal thing but hearing great songs used in commercials has a bit of a negative effect on me (especially cars and jeans adverts).

Anyhow having skipped the link to watch it and just play the music I am really glad I have. Leo Blais’ brand of pop-songwriting is reminiscent of a diverse array of artists ranging from Elliott Smith and Teenage Fanclub to Ben Folds and Travis.

His current Free EP is merely one installment of an ambitious ten-volume release series entitled Everyone’s Feelin’ Alone, which will eventually encompass over 40 tracks all told. Blais has shared the stage with such acts as Snow Patrol, Dispatch, The Dresden Dolls, Rocky Votolato, Sam Roberts, and The Neighborhoods.

Yet, the music is only the beginning of the story. Leo Blais is an artist and environmentalist in his own right. On top of spending nearly five years in the recording studio, Blais labored close to three years hand-creating the artwork for the Everyone’s Feelin’ Alone series. Using only an X-acto knife and a sharpie, Blais transformed his Lowell apartment into a tangible manifestation his musical vision. Whether it is the meticulously carved lyrics that wrap his room, or the hand-drawn tracklist, it’s clear you will not find a more unique approach to cover art and packaging anywhere soon.

In 1938, a group of winegrowers founded the Winzer Krems, Austria’s biggest producer of high-quality wines, situated in Krems. The location offers a gorgeous view over the whole town, the river Danube up to the Göttweig monastery and the Lower Austrian wine growing area at the border to the Wachau. This is the setting for this concert and festival.

The orchestra has had varying line-ups over the past two decades, but is currently performing as an octet, with seven ukulele players and one bassist. The members wear traditional orchestra dress for performances, with the men in black tie and the women in smart evening wear.

Peter Frampton - Record Plant 1975

It is worth going over the history regarding this Peter Frampton recording.

The show was was performed at San Francisco's Record Plant studios on the 24th March 1975 without any audience which does give a 'session' feel to the material. It was originally broadcast on KSAN-FM's Live From The Record Plant concert series in 1975.

Peter Frampton had little commercial success with his early albums. This changed with Frampton's breakthrough best-selling live album, Frampton Comes Alive!, in 1976. As a result bootleg versions of the KSAN show began to appear.

A limited edition CD release was remastered from the original master tapes by Suha Gur in 2004. Peter Frampton himself was  involved in the project and 5000 copies were made. These often change hands for in excess of $100 (USA).

2010FM March Mega Finale (Four).

The last round up of new music for March and there is plenty of diverse music, that hopefully will have something that appeals to your ears. I really do intend to fly through this addition so in no order at all here we go...

Starting with the wonderful My Education who have a new album coming out on the 27th April 2010 called 'Sunrise'.

Word is, it is absolutely their best album to date and really shows the band expanding their compositional talents.Well having listened to the track featured below I will personally be after more from them, the musicianship and atmospheric build are spot on for me.

The Delta Mirror have received some positive attention from the likes of Pitchfork and Stereogum, and for good reason. There is something a little haunting and distant about their sound that strikes a chord for me.

Their debut album 'Machines That Listen' was released a couple of weeks ago. Craig Gordon and David Bolt started out as a hip hop two piece in the late 90's and have been writing music in some form ever since. With the addition of Karrie K on bass, their sound has progressed to an ambient mix of shoegazy guitar and gothic vocals, but their production has held onto the same boom bap button pushing they started with.

Whilst on the theme of distant and haunting music Tape Deck Mountain released 'Ghost' back in January of this year.

There is most definately atmosphere and warmth within the sound they create and musically they discribe themselves as a mixture of  Indie / Gospel / Acousmatic and Tape music. This is one of those bands that are hard to pidgeon hole in anyone genre, whilst their musical structure is solid and consistent they seem to creep off in different directions within any one song, anyway we say well worth checking out.

The Brazierlights In The Window are a Danish band that for some obscure reason remind me a little of Amon Duul II but dont ask me to explain why.

The Brazierlights In The Window are one of the most interesting bands in the Danish underground scene (I am told), because they do not sound like an ordinary Danish Indie Rock act. One of the most interesting things about TBITW is the age of Anton Rank and Perry MacLeod Jensen which are both just 18 years old. I have to say their music is mature sounding and very creative and I sincerely look forward to hearing more from them.

Playing a sold out show in LA sharing a stage with Memory Tapes is a feat many bands would give anything for. When your band was just formed around the begining of January, this feat is amazing.

This is the beginnings of Dazzle Ships, a duo consisting of Tyler Haran and Hatii De Leon. They wanted to make music that sounded like David Bowie, Brian Eno, and Cocteau Twins among others; they try to make “experimental pop music”.

The young pair have a phobia of doing the same song twice so they try to radically shift roles and techniques while writing a song. More Please!!! (oh and if your still trying to work out where you have heard the name before its OMD).

The Vicious Guns are a Toronto-based electro-rock band that is making waves on an international level with their sleek, edgy sound. The Vicious Guns, featuring Jennie Vicious (formerly of  Tuuli and The Von Bondies), Richie Vicious (formerly of The Scourge of the Sea) and new bassist Alana de Vee. They are one to watch this year and have been on the receiving end of some upbeat reviews.

"The Vicious Guns are everything a band should be; cleverly written lyrics, infectious dance beats, cheeky vocals, and an onstage/offstage compatibility that is so charismatic you can't take your eyes (and ears) off of them." – Dead Sexy Magazine

"This duo carves out sleek garage-rock buzz that leans heavily towards The Jesus & Mary Chain, including elements of Joy Division and New Order. Sassy bassist/vocalist Jennifer captures unwavering attention, while Richard is the obvious driving force on guitar, perfectly complimenting her blissed-out vocals. With a dress-code that crosses into BRMC territory, The Vicious Guns rekindles that Creation Records spirit to crisp perfection." – Lonely Vagabond

B-52's - Montego Bay Jamaica 1982

You may have noticed that Beehive Candy owes something to the B-52's with our picture of Kate Pierson complete with 'Beehive' hairstyle residing alongside our 'music sharing policy'.

Therefore it's about time we gave them some coverage musically and this is a solid performance from the band back in 1982.

The band were taking part in the Jamaica world music festival and this concert was performed at The Bob Marley Performing Arts Centre in Montego Bay on the 25th November 1982.

The recording starts with the first song fading in and I am not sure if this was the first song of the performance, however it is likely as they were one of many acts on that night, and the running time seems about right.

Sound Quality: Very good stereo mp3@192kbps.

Genre: New Wave, post-punk, pop, surf-pop, dance rock.

10 - Rock Lobster (5:11)
11 - Private Idaho (3:14)
12 - outro goodbye and announcer (1:51)

Comments:

The band stick close to the studio versions of material in this concert which is quite challenging as the arrangements are quite intricate despite the catchy nature of their music. There is some wonderful passion in 'give me back my man' and and if I am not mistaken they took advantage of a horn section here and there.

Quoting from 'CD Universe' regarding the Storyville gigs 'By the early '50s, Billie Holiday's tone and timbre were already markedly different from her light, sensitive approach of the '40s. Deeper, richer, and more heavily stylized, her delivery here is gorgeously drowsy, an aesthetic heightened by the intimate setting and feel of the live nightclub to the point where both Lady and the combo border on the seductive consistency of molasses'.

The Quarrymen - 1957 to 1960 (Part One).

This is another selection of material from The Quarrymen dating back to 1957.

Some of this material is a duplication on the first Quarryman bootleg featured on Beehive Candy, however this is from an alternative CD source and the sound quality is much cleaner.

With the amount of interest generated by John Lennon's first band (joined by Paul McCartney & George Harrison along the way) it is not surprising that many versions of the same material have surfaced down the years. The obvious historical nature of the recordings continues to fascinate fans over four decades on.

This is the first of three features and inevitably the sound quality is average (but quite listenable) and their will be some more duplication of material.

Television - This Case Is Closed 1978

This is Television live at The Bottom Line Club in New York back on the 29th July 1978.

This concert has been circulated as 'The First Farewell' and 'This Case Is Closed' both suggesting and confirming the historical nature of this gig, as it was indeed the final live concert of Television until 1992.

At the time it was of course unknown if the band would perform or record again. The source of this recording is from the linage that led to 'This Case Is Closed' which suffers a little in the early stage from level adjustments, but is compensated by perhaps one of the best live recordings of the classic song Marquee Moon ever captured.

2010FM March Mega Catch Up (Three).

A backlog of music to go through has focused my mind somewhat, and I have to say as I set about another batch today, I was all set up to be remorseless with the delete key.

Trouble is one of the first bands I checked out was Codeine Velvet Club who have absolutely delighted me, I just love their music, and if you are in 'skip through mode' please at least give these folk a listen!

They have raised the bar for this edition so perhaps a few others failed to get a look in as a result however as you will notice plenty of other pretty good tunes have also surfaced.

As regards Codeine Velvet Club the new musical project from The Fratellis’ Jon Lawler (AKA Jon Fratelli) and singer - songwriter Lou Hickey, they release their self-titled U.S. debut April 6th on Dangerbird Records. The album is available for digital purchase now.

The collaboration began when Jon Lawler, taking a break from whirlwind touring and recording with The Fratellis, teamed up with Lou Hickey to work on a track – the jazz-noir, big-band duet titled “Vanity Kills” – for her record. The song inspired the duo to embark on a full-fledged project together. The resulting album features an elegant orchestral score written by Mick Cooke of Belle & Sebastian, backing vocals by the Gospel Truth Choir and strings parts recorded by renowned classical musicians, including legendary trumpeter Derek Watkins.

The group celebrates Jon Lawler and Lou Hickey’s shared love of ’60s boy-girl duets, dramatic orchestral pop and dark postwar Hollywood and Las Vegas romanticism. Lawler drew inspiration for the album’s dark energy and vampish edge from his time spent in Hollywood. He described his vision for Codeine Velvet Club’s album as sounding like ‘60s soundtrack composer (and James Bond theme-tune creator) John Barry “playing with a rock ‘n roll band.”

Flugente, the solo project for former The Blam front man Jerry Adler, has just released his second album 'Flugente 2'.

This is stripped down and raw where the musical focus is on unadorned Americana, a captivating blend of folk, alt-country, and pop. If you like anyone from Bob Dylan to Lucinda Williams I think there might be a place in your music collection for this guy.

Continuing the narrative that traces a path from Woodie Guthrie through modern day artists such as The Felice Brothers, Flugente is a testament to just how far American acoustic music has come as we enter the second decade of the 21st Century. With strikingly poetic lyrics, captivating, almost whispered harmonies, and twanging finger picked guitar, I have to say I think this guy deserves a lot of attention.

It's my opinion that bands and artists coming out of Canada over the last decade have gained a much larger amount of recognition and following thanks to the web and music sites however at the end of the day the fundamental bottom line has to be the quality of the music and the heartbeat of the act.

Dropping out of college to pursue his rock and roll dreams, lead singer Ben Fox collaborated with old friends and new friends to create the brooding sound and style of Toronto's Dinosaur Bones.

With Ben Fox on vocals, Branko Scekic on bass, Dave Wickland on keys, Lucas Fredette on drums, and Joel Clifton on guitar, the Canadian group transformed their unpolished music into a sound filled with haunting synth layers, powerful rhythm, and contemplative lyrics. Playing alongside artists like Crystal Antlers, Malajube, Hey Rosetta!, Arkells, Born Ruffians, and more, Dinosaur Bones quickly impressed audiences by their melancholic, yet ambitious show. After gaining praise and attention from Canada’s top media outlets, including Toronto’s 102.1 The Edge, the group collaborated with producer Jon Drew (Tokyo Police Club, Arkells) and Giant Studios to record their debut full-length.

These indie rockers recently played Billboard’s SXSW showcase at the Billboard Bungalow.

The following are just to good to miss out on, so in no particular order and forgive me for some copying from press releases as I try and get up to date, here are a few outstanding acts to check out.

Borrowed Eyes are a band that truly must be seen live to fully grasp the depths of their sound. Their soulful outlaw folk-fused bluesy southern rock amalgamation is easier heard than described, and the band puts on a hell of a show to say the least.

Led by the charismatic front man Danny Wood (formerly of …And You Will Know us by the Trail of Dead), Borrowed Eyes plays a blend of Americana, folk, and roots music with the intensity of a punk or metal band, and their passion for their style is apparent during the energetic jamming sections. Their sound is highly conceptual with a distinct vibe and theme, but stylistically never overthrows their music and its all around fun, soulful, and powerful breed of pure rock and roll.

This remix of Neon Indian's "Mind, Drips" comes from Chattanooga's Summer Dregs. Summer Dregs is the result of Carl Cadwell collaborating with musicians of greater talent to make better music than any of the contributors could alone. On their new record From Gold to Green it manifests itself as delicious, dark, semi-sweet electro-pop for fans of Passion Pit, Dntel/Postal Service, and the aforementioned Neon Indian.

Tour plans for later this year are underway for Summer Dregs, and Neon Indian can be caught pretty much anywhere music is played including SXSW, Bonnaroo, and Sasquatch to name just a few.

Finally Jordon Corey sent Beehive Candy a nice little message a couple of weeks back, we quote:

Hi Beehive Candy,

I recently had the opportunity to make some music with talented producers (Brandon Howard) and writers (Stacy Barthe) in the industry and was wondering what you, and or your audience thought of it. I just released my first single "Truth" and I will be releasing 5 new songs in the coming months.

Check out Jordon Corey's website with 'Truth' available to stream HERE. It's a really good song, and I hope we hear much more from her in the future.

Pink Floyd - Meddler (London) 1971

This is Pink Floyd recorded live on the 30th September, 1971, at the BBC’s Paris Theatre, in London UK. Recorded for the John Peel Show, part of the concert was subsequently broadcast on the 12th of October 1971 on BBC Radio One.

This was the first time two songs from the then new album Meddle were performed for the BBC (Echoes & One of These Days), and Nick Mason's vocal debut in the band is characteristically commented on by host John Peel.

The version of 'Meddle' is quite funky and raw in a good kinda way. 'Fat Old Sun' is transformed into something quite special in this performance.

A number of CD boots have been circulated down the years including both through 'Swinging Pig' & 'Harvested 'Records'.

The Harvested version is complete and is probably the best boot version (from which this is sourced) and was put together from the sources below to become the full concert again.

Source: BBC Rock Hour transcription disc (show #214) / Westwood One CD / 2nd Generation WNEW recording.

Sound Quality: Very good stereo mp3@160kbps.

Genre: Progressive rock, Psychedelic rock.

Set: Full Set.

Set List:

01. Fat Old Sun
02. One Of These Days
03. Echoes
04. Embryo
05. Blues

Website: Official.

Comments:

The John Peel Show was only 55 minutes long. “Embryo” and “Blues” were never broadcast originally in the UK. They were only aired on WNEW-FM, New York City, USA sometime in 1971.

This WNEW portion was broadcast only once, unfortunately, and features the station’s call sign (“This is WNEW…”) in the middle of Embryo. As a result of this all earlier versions of Embryo in circulation either have a rough (or very smooth) edit, or contain the call sign. The 1971 show are rebroadcast nearly every year in the USA on the “King Biscuit Flour Hour.” However, it is a combination version of the two shows and is incomplete.

Sisters Of Mercy - Trans Europe Excess 1985

This is a soundboard recording of the Sisters Of Mercy recorded live at Kolingsborg, Stockholm, Sweden, back on the 17th May 1985, and subsequently released through semi official (or at least loop hole in international law specialist label) KTS Records.

There are a number of recordings from various gigs from the Trans Europe Excess tour in circulation, this one is possibly the most popular as the sound quality does the band justice, and KTS were pretty good at getting hold of soundboard & stereo FM material.

In terms of performance and considering the stresses and strains on the band at this time the performance is spot on, seemingly warming up after the first two or three songs.

Source: Soundboard

Sound Quality: Very good stereo mp3@320kbps.

Genre: Rock, Goth Rock.

Set: Edited Set (not far off full gig).

Set List:

01. First And Last And Always
02. Body And Soul
03. Marian
04. No Time To Cry
05. Possession
06. Walk Away
07. Emma
08. Amphetamine Logic
09. A Rock And A Hard Place
10. Floorshow
11. Alice
12. Gimme Shelter
13. Ghostrider

Website: Official.

Comments:

This is another KTS (Kiss The Stone - KTS-068) silver CD bootleg that as previously mentioned were released through 'loop holes' in local Italian laws for a few years. As always with KTS releases the sound quality is very good, however as most of the KTS releases were on a single CD the concert is edited to around 60 plus minutes.

2010FM March Mega Catch Up (Two).

You can accuse me of blatant promotion when it comes to Seasick Steve, in fact I will insist that anyone not already in the know, check him out immediately and hereby order all fans without a copy of his latest album (Man From Another Time) to purchase a copy right now! (OK hopefully you get the point..).

Born in Oakland, CA, Seasick Steve ran away from home at age of 13. He spent his adolescence living rough, grabbing work where an underage labourer could find it. By 16, he was busking and starting to become the musician that close to fifty years later emerged as Seasick Steve. Through this journey, his feet took him through Europe, back to the U.S., and then ultimately back overseas.

While living in the Pacific-Northwest, he opened a small studio in Olympia producing albums for acts as diverse as Bikini Kill and Modest Mouse, and found some success in the Washington music scene. In 2001, at the insistence of his wife, he returned to Oslo with his three sons (he has five children). In 2003, he recorded his first album under the moniker Seasick Steve, titled Cheap; which began to establish a foothold in the UK for him.

With momentum in hand, devastation struck when in 2004 he suffered a heart attack. While home and finding a way of life he could sustain post-heart attack, his wife pressed him to start recording on his 4-track. Those sessions would become the 2006 release, Dog House Music; which was independently released on the Bronzerat label (200,000+ copies sold). His follow up album, I Started Out With Nothin’ And I Still Got Most Of It Left, found Seasick Steve landing his first platinum album and critical success overseas.

Focusing on a “live” analogue sound, the new album, Man From Another Time was produced, written, recorded and engineered by Seasick Steve, with the assistance of engineer Roy Williams.

The U.S. release of Seasick Steve’s Man From Another Time is through Ryko on March 30th, 2010.

The Black Atlantic are from Groningen (The Netherlands), They are an acoustic pop quartet, formed around singer-songwriter and former Shai Hulud front man, Geert van der Velde.

The band’s folk influenced sound is reminiscent of Bon Iver or Sigur Rós. The band pairs lush, dreamy melodies with softly layered vocal harmonies and minimal percussion.

Exuding formidable intimacy and heartfelt urgency, the Black Atlantic are (according to their promo) contenders to be one of the biggest surprises of 2010. I would not be surprised if this happens, put quite simply, I find their music both soothing and moving, as much as I have given Seasick Steve an unashamed plug I heartily recommend giving this band a listen.

AOL Spinner described their sound as “ethereal and evocative”, while Slam Magazine called it “bright and refreshing”, and Drive Wayferer Drive hailed it as “lovely without being precious, ambitious without being alienating”.

The Black Atlantic are heading out to Austin, TX to perform at the 2010 South by Southwest Music Festival (SXSW) this week. This will mark their maiden trip to SXSW After their five-day stint at SXSW, the band will embark upon a spring tour of the US, making stops at major cities including New York and Chicago.

OK I am going to blast through a few other artist that have come the Beehive way in recent weeks and who have made us look up and take notice!

Zachary "Ulysses Campbell" Wilson is a product of the DIY generation and proud of it. He records primarily on an 8 track, edits with freeware, and plays shows whenever a party is happening. Sometimes there may be two other guys playing with him, sometimes it’s just Ulysses Campbell solo - but it’s always high energy; which in itself mirrors the frantic style of Ulysses Campbell. While maintaining basic pop instincts, Ulysses whirls through an ever changing thrash of electro, drum n bass, 8-bit, dub step, and all around ill beats.

Standout track "Dinosaur Hunting" begins with a bit of a Mt. Eerie/Microphones feel, and about halfway through the beat drops in true Ulysses style. The song was written mere hours before his departure on his six month journey in South Africa; his mood well captured in the vocals and musical progression.

FlyinFisch, the new project of modern-day-renaissance-man Adrian Fischer, is set to release its self-titled debut album on March 19th. With each song representing a unique exploration into the experiences and cultural influences that have formed his musical identity, Fischer’s new album is a sonic journey that should not be missed. With tour dates throughout February to support the upcoming release, Adrian is pleased to be hitting the road again, and introducing his material to new audiences.

If you try to pinpoint where Adrian has been the last ten years, you’ll notice that he hasn’t stayed in one place for very long. Having lived everywhere from Venezuela to New York City, and many places in between, Adrian Fischer’s story is one of travel, exploration, and evolution. The resulting musical sound is as difficult to characterize as Adrian is – influenced by the tones and sounds of each place he has lived, his style is a blend of classical, reggae, pop, and afro-Caribbean influences, with each element representing a snapshot in his decade-long journey.

In FlyinFisch’s debut album, Adrian has brilliantly fused his influences into one solid and united offering. While still clearly referencing the cultures and sounds that inform his music, Adrian has now moved a step further, developing a sound that is uniquely his own. With an interest in the natural world linking many of the songs together, and a desire to promote what Adrian calls “positive consciousness” providing the album’s context, FlyinFisch’s first offering is meant to be enjoyed by audiences of all ages and cultures, who will hopefully be brought together by Adrian’s message of unity and love.

San Diego's Tropical Depression (Jordan Thomas and Joe Campesino) have played in a variety of bands together before deciding to form their current indie electronic two-piece, but are already on their third album release in four years. Their sound has been described as "grunge, electronic, nu-gaze, and a hint of 90s emo" by The FMLY.

Their band consists of a twelve string guitar, bass, electronics and vocals. "As multi-instrumentalists we both usually come to the table with ideas," says Thomas, "and follow the songs wherever they go. The single best thing about being in a two piece band is direct one-on-one collaboration." Tropical Depression has just released the album Years On Years (November 2009), which was recorded and produced by Pall Jenkins (The Black Heart Procession, Three Mile Pilot).
