Whats new or current in the Beehive?

Lets start with The Polyphonic Spree, who released their third album 'The Fragile Army' this summer. On this album they take their unique 'spaced out choral pop' a little towards the dark side. I think they are probably a love or hate group. I like them (to be awkward).

Now a band I am really keen to promote (you know you can still buy music & help new artists?). Bodies Of Water remind me a little of the aforementioned, add a touch of Beach Boys harmonies, and something a little maverick, and you are almost there. Marvin Gaye - Budokan - 1979

Yet another little treasure. This is Marvin Gaye live at Budokan Hall, Tokyo, Japan, way back on November 13th 1979.

The man made great music throughout his career, and is synonymous with Tamla Motown.
As is widely known he also had something of a troubled life at times, and when this concert took place he was not far from rock bottom with both tax debt and drug problems.

However a true performer, he sounds great, and with a backing band that has real power & edge, this was a great show.

Johnny Cash - New York - 1996

This is Johnny Cash live playing at the Irving Plaza,
New York City, on the 07.09.1996.

In 1996, Cash released a sequel to American Recordings (1994), entitled Unchained, and enlisted the accompaniment of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, which won a Grammy for Best Country Album.

This live performance does justice to the exceptional studio work he produced around that time & thereafter. Sadly in 1997 the on set of serious illnesses, greatly reduced his live appearances.

Pink Floyd - Psychedelic Sound Check - 1994

In my little world, a small claim to fame is having been in the audience with my eldest daughter, at Earls Court, London, when Pink Floyd recorded the Pulse DVD. Like I say my little world.

Turning the sad level up to eleven, I still have a guitar plectrum used in the show, and given to me after, in my possession. Did I mention little world?

The 1994 tour promoting the Division Bell album was no little thing! In my opinion it was a fantastic tour, a spectacle definitely, the musicianship well crafted, and the gig I attended, plus the footage, and recordings of others I have heard, suggest the tour as a whole, was really appreciated by the fans.

Oh, I know there are those who say it stopped being Pink Floyd when Roger Waters departed, or even when Syd Barrett was dropped, and those who hark back to the golden years, whenever they were. However do you know what? I really don't care. There are more important things in life than becoming retentive over music...

So to the purpose of this feature.

I am pleased to share some of the sound checks ahead of the shows. These are full songs, played obviously without the audience, and some of the banter before or after, with the sound crew.

If you listen closely you may also notice David Gilmour 'adjusts' some of the lyrics.

The Who - Tommy Tour - Amsterdam 1969

This one is special. The Who toured their then new album Tommy in the autumn of 1969, through to 1970, with gigs across the USA, and then on to the UK.

They started out in Europe, and this was the starting point.

Playing Amsterdam on the 29th September 1969, they featured some of their then best live material, and the whole of Tommy.

Pete Townsend seemed in a good mood, chatting to the audience a little, the whole performance was outstanding.

Spooky Tooth - Grugahalle, Essen 1969

Originally there was 'The Art', led by Mike Harrison on vocals and Luther Grosvenor on guitar. They then met American keyboardist Gary Wright and changed name to Spooky Tooth.

They first recorded It's All About (Island, 1968). For those who look for the roots of progressive rock, and the harder edged likes of Led Zeppelin, your starting place could well be Spooky Tooth.

Spooky Two (1969) delivered a mixture of heavy blues with guitar and organ both to the fore, and some more AOR sounding material. Both albums are worth checking out, or one of the 'best of' collections.

This is a recording of the band live in 1969 at Grugahalle, Essen, Germany.

David Bowie - Montreal Canada - 1983

David Bowie played the Montreal Forum, Montreal, Quebec, on the 07/12/1983, part of the Serious Moonlight world tour.

Described as the early and late shows, this was in fact one performance with a twenty minute intermission in the middle.

David Bowie - Diamond Dogs Tour - Live 1974

This particular bootleg is known as - David Bowie - Strange Fascination 74. This is one of the few high quality recordings of the Diamond Dogs Tour of 1974.

This one was recorded at The Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles on the 5th of September 1974.

Not much in the way of information for this gig, I am guessing it was an FM broadcast, very listenable throughout.

Sinead O'Conner - Live Vredenburg - Utrecht - Holland

This is Sinéad O'Connor Live in concert at Vredenburg, Utrecht, in the Netherlands.

The concert took place on March 16, 1988, and was also broadcast on FM. Sound quality is excellent, as was the performance, it's a must have for any Sinead fan.

Her first album The Lion and the Cobra was "a sensation" when it was released in 1987 and it reached gold record status and earned a Best Female Rock Vocal Performance Grammy nomination. The single "Mandinka" was a big college radio hit in the United States, and "I Want Your (Hands on Me)" received both college and urban play in a remixed form that featured rapper MC Lyte.

In her first US network television appearance, O'Connor sang "Mandinka" on Late Night with David Letterman in 1988. The single "Troy" was also released as a single in the UK and Ireland.

The Doors - Live - Isle Of Wight - 1970

Known as 'Palace Of Exile' this bootleg is in a class of it's own.

The Doors played not long after midnight, whoever took the time to record this to such a high standard, and those who have ensured that the quality of the recording has remained until today deserve some thanks to say the least.

Considering this boot was recorded thirty seven years ago, it remains a fine quality recording, and really does justice to the highlight of that years Isle of Wight festival.

The art work in the picture contains front and back CD covers. I am not sure of the origins of these, and if they have any resemblance to the early vinyl boots in circulation, however Jim Morrison was certainly sporting the beard etc, at that time.

The gig was recorded live at the 3rd Isle Of Wight Festival at Afton Farm, Freshwater. Commencing at 12:05 am on Sunday, 31st August, 1970. This is a soundboard recording.

This is Jeff Buckley live in japan in 1995.

The audio quality on this concert is superb for an audience recording.

The concert took place on January 30th 1995, and as far as I know was just one of two gigs he undertook in Japan.

Jeff Buckley - Arlene's Grocery - 1997

Jeff Buckley was born in California's Orange County in 1966.

He died in a tragic drowning accident on May 29th 1997.

He left one near perfect album, several live concerts recorded and released in full or part prior to, and/or after his death, and the material that may have lead eventually to a second 'proper' album.

If you are a fan this leaves a void, that can never be filled.

Sadly for an artist as talented as Jeff, the 'unofficial' recordings remain sadly few and far between. In away this is a good thing, as a badly recorded concert, would be such an injustice, to someone who was capable of such incredibly moving music, and never had the chance to expand definitively beyond his debut album.

The bootlegs that I have of Jeff Buckley are few in number. I know of around fifteen, that are supposed to be of good quality, the live radio material seem to be those most widely circulated.

This is my favorite. The copy I have was called 'The Grace Of J'.

At midnight on February 9, 1997, Jeff Buckley debuted his new drummer, Parker Kindred, in a show at Arlene Grocery on New York's Lower East Side. He also played a couple of solo gigs in New York during the first months of 1997: a gig at the Daydream Cafe (featuring band members Mick Grondahl and Michael Tighe as "special guests") and a solo performance February 4 as part of the Knitting Factory's 10-Year Birthday Party.

Steely Dan - The Rainbow Finsbury Park London 1974

Steely Dan - precise, cool, bluesy, jazzy, mature, thoughtful, clever, serious, catchy, timeless, flawless, and hopefully you get my drift.

Steely Dan were one of the bands that taught a younger me, that there was much more to music than three chord rock anthems, or in them day's who looked the part. When I bought Pretzel Logic, it became my favorite album of the time. I obtained a copy of a 1994 concert a while back, and was impressed with how good they sounded.

I went to see them in London in 1974, I even remember the hassle our driver had finding somewhere to park, and the subsequent frantic search for a bar, before the gig. Arriving at the venue, the foyer was a sea of faded denim, and hair, so many long haired blokes, it seemed the hippies were back, from memory it seemed a rather male audience. So when I obtained a boot of the show recently I have to say I was over the moon. I was almost nervous when I began to play it, hoping it was at least listenable, and looking for signs that this really was the gig I had attended thirty plus years ago.

The memories flooded back, this was definitely the show (all I need now is for someone to tell me, if it really was Kiki Dee supporting them? as that remains a vaguer recollection). The quality of the boot is astounding, definitely from the sound desk, and mastered, with some care.

A Trip With The Beatles - Part Three

The 'Get Back' or 'Twickenham sessions', took place in 1969.

Paul McCartney, wanted to get The Beatles playing together again as opposed to just recording. It was an opportunity to help the band gel together again, have some fun, and maybe lead to some new live performances.

It was also a chance for band members to share new material, some of which would surface later on solo albums.

In the end the now legendary roof top performance, was all that was to happen, as public performance's go.

The actual sessions were filmed, and each film reel was accompanied by a mono soundtrack.

The soundtrack has surfaced in different forms down the years. Recently I acquired the full soundtrack set, from a generation of copies quite close to the originals (so the sound quality is very good).

These copies are not broken down into individual songs, rather they are inclusive of what was included on the film reel in use. I will when time permits try and edit these down to songs, to help, I do at least have a full song listing from a boot series circulated some time ago.

One of the best known bootlegs from these performances, that has done the rounds for some time is 'The Corn Of Apple', or 'The Core of Apple'. Lost in translation, the 'Corn' typing error seems to be the more widely circulated version, indeed the cover of my copy has 'corn' rather than 'core'...

Those days playing in Hamburg, certainly paid off, they are up there with Elvis Presley's Wooden Heart. Mind you Elvis did his army conscription in Germany.

Perhaps it should me mandatory for all 'boy' bands to play live in Germany for a couple of years before hitting the big time in the UK, if you follow my drift.

In part one of this series, I used the first CD from the mythology boot series. Mythology is such a large collection, that it would be easy just to source from that.

It seems rather pointless to just keep dipping into this, especially as you can purchase the official Anthology series, especially if various outtakes, or work in progress versions are your bag.

So I will try and expand out on The Beatles rarities trail. The Beatles took a conscious decision to stop performing live, and most live recordings from the USA tours that I have heard feature the screaming audience rather than the band.

As a consequence the rehearsals for albums in the studio, have thrown up some real gems, as often the band would play 'live' without the audience. One of the best set of sessions are the 'Twickenham' or 'Get Back' sessions. This is a story in it's own right, and will be featured another time, it deserves the attention.

In 1968 The Beatles were both at Trident and EMI studios in London. Some excellent (performance and recording quality) material from sessions played, are on the bootleg 'Lord of Madness'. I have uploaded tracks 1 & 3, for your enjoyment.
