Don Henley - Los Angeles 1985

This is Don Henley live in concert in Los Angeles California back in 1985.

That's according to the limited notes that came with this recording and his comments throughout the show suggest that the location (LA) is correct, and the songs performed are from the right timeline.

However I have a feeling that this may actually be material from more than one gig based only on the sound differences around 'Desparado' and a couple of other tracks, and I am not familiar with the Fox Bowl which the notes suggest was the venue.

Feel free as always to add any comments on this one. All of that said this is a great performance from Don when he was riding high as a solo artist following the initial break up of The Eagles.

Comments:

Following the breakup of the Eagles, Henley embarked on a productive solo career, the most commercially successful of any of the Eagles. His first solo release, 1982's I Can't Stand Still, was a moderate seller. The single "Dirty Laundry", a denunciation of tabloid media, was Henley's all-time biggest hit. It reached No. 3 on Billboard Hot 100  at the beginning of 1983 and earned a Gold-certified single for sales of over a million copies in the US. It was also nominated for a Grammy.

This was followed in 1984 by Building the Perfect Beast, which featured layered synthesizers and was a marked departure from the Eagles' country-rock sound. A single release, "The Boys of Summer", reached No.5 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song's haunting rhythms and lyrics of loss and aging, capped by seeing "a Deadhead  sticker on a Cadillac," immediately connected with a certain age group. Don Henley also won the Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance for the song. Several other songs on the album, "All She Wants to Do Is Dance" (No. 9 on Hot 100), "Not Enough Love in the World" (No 34) and "Sunset Grill" (No.22) also received considerable airplay.

Henley's next album, 1989's The End of the Innocence, was even more successful. The song "The End of the Innocence", a collaboration with Bruce Hornsby, is a melancholy, piano-driven tale of finding bits of happiness in a corrupt world, and reached No. 8 as a single. The hit follow-up, "The Heart of the Matter", is an emotive chance remembrance of a lost love. Both songs use the effective technique of varying the words in the chorus each time it is sung, to advance the song's narrative. The album's "The Last Worthless Evening" and "New York Minute" were among other songs that gained radio airplay. Henley again won the Best Male Rock Vocal Performance Grammy in 1990 for the album. Also in 1989, Henley made a brief appearance on MTV's Unplugged series.

In live shows, Henley would play drums and sing simultaneously only on certain Eagles songs; on his solo songs he would either play electric guitar and sing or just sing. Occasionally Eagles songs would get drastic rearrangements, such as "Hotel California" with four trombones.

Muddy Waters - Paris 1964

This is the Father of Chicago blues Muddy Waters live in concert at L'Olympia Bruno Coquatrix, Paris, France back in 1964.

Muddy's sound was basically Delta blues electrified, but his use of microtones, in both his vocals and slide playing, made it extremely difficult to duplicate and follow correctly.

"When I plays onstage with my band, I have to get in there with my guitar and try to bring the sound down to me," he said in Rolling Stone. "But no sooner than I quit playing, it goes back to another, different sound. My blues look so simple, so easy to do, but it's not. They say my blues is the hardest blues in the world to play."

Comments:

Muddy Waters influence is tremendous, over a variety of music genres: blues, rhythm and blues, rock 'n' roll, folk, jazz, and country. He also helped Chuck Berry get his first record contract.

His 1958 tour of England marked possibly the first time amplified, modern urban blues was heard there, although on his first tour he was the only one amplified. His backing was provided by Englishman Chris Barber's trad jazz group. (One critic retreated to the toilets to write his review because he found the band so loud).

The Rolling Stones named themselves after his 1950 song "Rollin' Stone", (also known as "Catfish Blues", which Jimi Hendrix covered as well). Hendrix recalled "the first guitar player I was aware of was Muddy Waters. I first heard him as a little boy and it scared me to death". Cream covered "Rollin' and Tumblin'" on their 1966 debut album Fresh Cream, as Eric Clapton was a big fan of Muddy Waters when he was growing up, and his music influenced Clapton's music career.

The song was also covered by Canned Heat at the legendary Monterey Pop Festival and later adapted by Bob Dylan on the album Modern Times. One of Led Zeppelin's biggest hits, "Whole Lotta Love", is lyrically based upon the Muddy Waters hit "You Need Love", written by Willie Dixon. Dixon wrote some of Muddy Waters' most famous songs, including "I Just Want to Make Love to You" (a big radio hit for Etta James, as well as the 1970s rock band Foghat), "Hoochie Coochie Man," which The Allman Brothers Band famously covered, and "I'm Ready", which was covered by Humble Pie. In 1993, Paul Rodgers released the album Muddy Water Blues: A Tribute to Muddy Waters, on which he covered a number of Muddy Waters songs, including "Louisiana Blues", "Rollin' Stone", "Hoochie Coochie Man" and "I'm Ready" (among others) in collaboration with a number of famous guitarists such as Brian May and Jeff Beck.

Angus Young of the rock group AC/DC has cited Muddy Waters as one of his influences. The song title "You Shook Me All Night Long" came from lyrics of the Muddy Waters song "You Shook Me", written by Willie Dixon and J. B. Lenoir. Earl Hooker first recorded it as an instrumental which was then overdubbed with vocals by Muddy Waters in 1962.

2010FM - June Edition Two

Coltrane Motion are a Chicago-based electronic indie rock duo, with a new album titled  'Hello Ambition!' which was released a few days ago via Datawaslost, which they are currently touring in support of.

Lead singer, Michael Bond records sixties obsessed electronic pop in his home studio, while guitarist Matt Dennewitz covers it all in wailing distortion and delay at their live shows-the result is a raucous wall of sound built out of drum loops and fuzzed-out melodies, held together by swirling synths and organ drone.

The group has its origins in a hanfdul of lo-fi CD-R and compilation releases, culminating in theit 2007 full-length debut, Songs About Music and a series of successful tours across the US and Canada. Their frantic live show has been described by the press an an "exuberant seizure" and the "cool kids in programming class", it's hyperactive intensity is a far cry from your usual laptop performances.

Tour Dates:

6/11 - Stonefly Brewery - Milwaukee, WI
6/12 - Medusa - Minneapolis, MN
6/19 - Woodstock Opera House - Woodstock, IL
6/24 - Backyard Film and Music Festival - Chicago, IL
9/29 - Pop Montreal - Montreal, Canada

I just had to copy the following publicity piece as it is a good summary, “Stevie Ray Vaughn trapped in a woman's body with Janis Joplin screaming to get out.” This is how one critic describes Kelly Richey, a blues-based rock virtuoso.

They continue Buoyed by critical praise and fiercely loyal fans, The Kelly Richey Band tour extensively bringing their live experience to venues throughout the US, Canada, and Europe. The attention centers around this Kentucky native’s guitar playing; Kelly Richey’s proficiency has earned her comparisons to Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan while gaining her a place on stage with blues legends, Albert King and Lonnie Mack.

OK having listened to a good number of songs from the band I have to say that for me Kelly's vocals are somewhat 'softer' than Janis Joplin which is no bad thing as with so much excellent musicianship going on this complements the guitar work rather than competes with it. Blues rock fans will love The Kelly Richey Band.

NYC based singer songwriter Mary Jennings who goes by the moniker of Jennings has come to our attention over the last week.

Her development into music is of note  Mary’s surge in musical expression started after the sudden death of her mother.“This tragedy rocked me to the core, but there is so much beauty in what it allowed me to do,” she says. “All of my emotions came pouring out in the form of melody.” At the time, her father, a former musician, gave her the option to go through therapy or record an album. He knew both would be equally helpful to her, but by recording her music, she would be able to have something to hold on to and share with others for a lifetime.

It is often my experience that 'singer-songwriters' either capture my imagination and register straight away, or just dont 'work' for me on a personal level. I am not sure why but it seems a trend. Jennings 'works' because she is genuinly talented and has enough variety in her song and musical styles to keep me interested. It's radio friendly music and perhaps quite mainstream for Beehive Candy however if you like something whats the problem?

Beatific is brainchild of vocalist, guitarist, and producer Elad Marish. In his latest studio effort he brings together bassist/co-producer Eric Holden and drummer/co-producer Jonathan Gorman.

Playing in a vibrational sandbox of infectious beats, indie rock roots and electroacoustic influences, Beatific's hypnotic grooves mix with a languid, lyrical prowess and deep melodic sensibility. Marish is interested in accessing those secret places where the whimsical meets the angelic and magical; when we are able to shed the masks of our identities and don the beatific smiles - countenances of our higher selves.

Ok it's just annoyingly catchy and has got stuck in my head so lets get it stuck in yours too.

Colour Revolt  are an Oxford, MS band dubbed a 'Band To Watch' by Stereogum and the 'best edge-of-your-seat energy since The Arcade Fire' by Paste.

They have 'crafted their strongest statement to date' with new album ‘The Cradle,’ due out on August 10th 2010 on New Fear/Dualtone.

The band has been whittled down to core members Jesse Coppenbarger (vocals, guitars) and Sean Kirkpatrick (guitar, vocals), and the resulting consolidation of creative energy has reinvigorated the group, resulting in a 10 song album that focuses the band’s wild-eyed, textured, standing at the edge of the world rock.

Mention Arcade Fire and I get a little anxious, as I am a flag waving fan of said band and any comparisons need to be bonafide or I get a little rattled. OK no need to panic I can see some positive similarities Colour Revolt are clearly not trying to be like them and have enough of thier own individual class and talent going on, I guess the likeness is in the energy and passion which is no bad thing. One to watch out for.

Jonneine Zapata completes our second round up this month. A mood filled introduction to her stated 'Infused with smoky, psychedelic instrumentation and slow-burning swells, Jonneine Zapata delivers a definitive grand-slam with her debut release, ‘Cast The Demons Out’, a record that luminously captures the musical essence and prowess of this one-woman army'.

Word is she has an electrifying live stage show, and comparisons with Patti Smith and PJ Harvey have dutifully been made.

Beehive Candy have the single release 'Good Looking' to share and on the strength of this will be checking Jonneine out some more. This is a great song full of mood and intensity that made us stop what we were doing and give it a proper listen.

The Mick Fleetwood Blues Band - Hamburg 2008

This is The Mick Fleetwood Blues Band live at Fabrik, Hamburg, Germany, on the 12th October 2008.

This makes a great companion to the officially released live album  'Blue Again' (recorded live at the Sheldon Concert Hall in St. Louis, Missouri in February of 2008) and we would urge anyone interested in this show to check out that album if you have not already done so. Blue Again received a 2010 Grammy nomination for 'Best Traditional Blues Album'.

This concert features some alternative songs to the official release and is a great reminder of the incredible material from the original 1960's Fleetwood Mac.

Genre: Blues Rock.

Set: Radio Edit Concert.

Set List:

10.Homework.

Band Line Up:

Rick Vito - Guitar - Vocals
Lenny Castellanos - Bass
Mark Johnstone - Keyboard - Vocals
Mick Fleetwood - Drums - Vocals

Comments:

Mick Fleetwood did not seek to copy the original Fleetwood Mac, rather to "pay it tribute by creating something both historically respectful yet new and invigorated." To this end, he recruited former Fleetwood Mac guitarist Rick Vito, who had played on the Behind the Mask album in 1990, together with two relative unknowns, Lenny Castellanos and Mark Johnstone, to form the Mick Fleetwood Blues Band. The band subsequently undertook a tour of the United States, and later in 2008, Europe, including an appearance at the Notodden Blues Festival in Norway.

2010FM - June Edition One

According to his website Matt Stevens is a musician and composer from North London. An instrumental artist, he uses an acoustic guitar and a sampler to create multi layered tracks live. This is often called Live Looping. His music is compared with artists as diverse as John Mclaughlin, Johnny Marr and Sigur Ros. He plays live all over the UK from festivals to house concerts.

His new album Ghost released today (June 1st) arrived in my inbox last Friday and has been playing on and off all weekend. This guy is really talented and the instrumental acoustic music takes you in many different directions and styles. Please check Matt Stevens out, it's a great shame that so many radio stations seem to shy away from 'instrumental' music as talented and creative work like this can go un-noticed, but not if Beehive Candy can help it! You can download 'Ghost' and more from Matt Stevens website below.

Music marketing company Musebox celebrate their forth annivesary in Brooklyn, New York, tommorrow (June 2nd) at Glasslands and one of the bands on the bill are Soundpool.

Soundpool are the disco-shoegazer NYC ensemble that fuses ethereal vocals, spacey lush synths, a wall of guitars sounds with funky bass lines, disco beats and psychedelic visuals. Their current record 'Mirrors In Your Eye's was released on the Killer Pimp label (of A Place To Bury Strangers’ fame) and was applauded by the likes of Pitchfork, The Deli Mag, GBH, and Losing Today. We here at the Beehive are reminded a little of St Etienne (in a positive manner) and cannot help ourselves in sharing a song on this occaision.

Also appearing at the above mentioned event are Telephoned. Now I did not intend to feature this band however the following song is just so catchy and the fact it goes off into a dub thing at one point is the tipping point. Oh well there goes my street credibility amongst the serious rock music fans...

Telephoned are a dance-pop duo from Brooklyn made up of DJ/producer Sammy Bananas (Fool’s Gold) and singer/party starter Maggie Horn (Good Peoples) that have earned early praise from the likes of Pitchfork, RCRD LBL, and YRB Magazine for their pseudo-covers and reworkings of original beats into hypnotic club tracks.

Not one but two instrumental albums in this edition! Spotlight Floodlight with debut album 'Polarized' which is a mixture of instrumental, cinematic and often mysterious songs from keyboardist Peter Adams.

Performed primarily on Rhodes and Wurlitzer electric pianos, Polarized blends the influences of Bill Evans, SIgur Ros (again - however valid point), and Erik Satie into a thick sonic atmosphere, where upright bass, and double drums interplay with Mellotron and wordless vocals.

Peter Adams, originally from Lexington Massachusetts, has recorded, toured, and performed keyboards with numerous bands and artists in Boston, New York City, and Los Angeles. He is now based in LA as an independent artist.

San Francisco-based The Real Nasty has just released its debut full-length album 'Paper City'.  Recorded completely 'live' in the studio, the band have set out to get the concert vibe in the studio, something many bands struggle to achieve, however listening to the album I have to say there is an immiediacy and I can just imagine the guys collectivily playing along.  With a traditional, up-right bass and a self-made cajon percussion set counterbalancing country-blues inspired guitar, The Real Nasty combines an electric sound with a more down-home, acoustic ethos, and are sure to gain some much deserved attention with their debut release.

Background to the band includes: Formed in January 2009, the Real Nasty is comprised of 3 veteran bay-area musicians with diverse musical backgrounds.  Jacob Groopman’s guitar work is noticeably influenced by his bluegrass picking skills, and drummer Matt Smith’s deep interest in West African drumming is what informs his mastery of the cajon.  With bassist Ryan Lukas, a music professor at the University of Santa Clara, holding down the bottom end, The Real Nasty brings together 3 very strong musical backgrounds, forming a unit and a sound that is truly unique.

Now, with their debut album just released, The Real Nasty are focused on bringing their explosive live show to new fans all over the West Coast.

They contacted Beehive Candy directly and have informed us that they recently released their debut album, and are getting positive reviews from various blogs, such as Wild Honey Pie, Brill Dream, Moxie And Mayhem, and Knocks From The Underground.

The band formed in January 2009 and have been working the Brooklyn and Manhatten music circuit, and have independently released their debut album. Whats most important is they are really good, with the powerful sound a three piece rock band can produce, and some creative and well performed songs, check Vanguard Villains out - recommended !

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Tokyo 1998

This is Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds performing at Fuji Rock in Tokyo back on the 2nd August 1998.

This is a resonably well circulated recording of the show and is missing Brompton Oratory and possibly Whiskey Rye from the concert although there remains some confusion if the latter was performed on this occasion.

Sound quality is good and Nick Cave comes across in an upbeat mood somewhat teasing the audience on a couple of occasion. The set list reads as a 'Best Of' up to this point in the bands history.

Comments:

In 1990, the band collectively eliminated hard drugs from its diet, relocated to Brazil, and released The Good Son, Kid Congo Powers' final collaboration with the band. Their next record, 1992's Henry's Dream, was the first to feature current members Martyn Casey and Conway Savage. Following it came 1994's Let Love In.

In 1996, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds released Murder Ballads. It includes "Henry Lee," a duet with British rock singer PJ Harvey (with whom Cave had a brief relationship), and "Where the Wild Roses Grow," a duet with Australian pop idol Kylie Minogue. The latter was a mainstream hit in the UK and in Australia, winning three ARIA Awards including "Song of the Year." Australian violinist Warren Ellis began working with the band at this time, and would play an increasingly significant creative role in the band's output in coming years. American drummer Jim Sclavunos also joined the group.

Their next album, The Boatman's Call (1997), is marked by a radical shift away from archetypal and violent narratives to biographical and confessional songs about his relationships with Carneiro and Harvey. Nick Cave then took a short break to rehabilitate from his 20 years of heroin and alcohol abuse, during which time he got married.

2010FM - May Edition Three

UK producers and remix sensations Mock and Toof released their debut full-length Tuning Echoes on Monday of this week. Riding a reputation as one of the most sought after acts on the DJ circuit, Mock & Toof demonstrate what happens when one combines an education in house music with a love of experimental pop and psychedelic rock.

Duncan Stump (Mock) & Nick Woolfson (Toof) are two of the UK’s most creative music producers. Having made a name for themselves via 12” releases on James Murphy’s DFA Recordings and their own Tiny Sticks imprint; the pair have forged a reputation for brilliantly off-kilter, disco-fuelled house grooves that are laced with originality. Enough originality in fact to have caught the attention of Hot Chip, Zero 7, Holy Ghost! and Groove Armada who’ve all come calling for their remix services.

Their press release goes on "Tuning Echoes is not a “nu-disco” album of grooves. It would have been far too easy for the duo to compile ten club tracks and call it an album. “We’ve never been about ‘nu-disco’, whatever that means anyway…” Explains Duncan. “Anyone who knows our music will know that we’re a bit all over the place as producers, if we like an idea we run with it and we’re much more comfortable being eclectic and not pigeonholed.” Dont be put off by words like 'disco' and 'club scene' this is all about developing a quite unique album that has really captured Beehive Candy's interest.

Sonny Smith, front man of the group Sonny & The Sunsets, has launched a gargantuan art project called 100 Records that is currently running at San Francisco’s Gallery 16. Sonny dedicated one year to write 100 songs that were recorded over various sessions with his band The Sunsets, The F**karoos, solo recordings, and even recording sessions in his esteemed camper Sluggo. Close to 80 visual artists created faux 7” record covers of fictional bands and singers created solely by Smith...In addition is a homemade custom built working jukebox loaded with all 100 songs to play in the art show. The songs on the jukebox range from pop, concept ideas, spoken word, instrumentals, surf, garage, folk and rock n roll.

Gallery 16 has put out 100 Records ‘Volume 1’, a limited edition of 40 box sets including reproductions of 12 of the art covers, with a CD of 16 original songs inside. 100 Records ‘Volume 2: I Miss The Jams’, coming out on Turn-Up Records in early June, is another box set including five 7” splits with 10 of the fictional artists represented. Volume 2 also features fellow San Francisco singers Ty Segall, Tim Cohen (Fresh n Only’s), Heidi Alexander (The Sandwitches), Donovan Quinn and more.

Interestingly, two of the bands created in the project, The F**karoos and The Loud Fast Fools, have become real bands in addition to random appearances in live shows by Earth Girl Helen Brown and Zig Speck.

100 Records will be featured at Okay Mountain Gallery in Austin, TX opening June 5th as well as Cinders Gallery in New York opening August 13th. Look for 100 Records ‘Volume 3’ later this year.

He has also shared one track from the forthcoming album free over on the AOL radio blog. In support of the new album Steve will be touring North America from the 18th of June, just click on the picture to enlarge and see the tour date details.

Having only heard the song shared through the AOL radio blog Beehive Candy are not really in a position to say much more than it's good enough to repeat here, and if this song is anything to go by we look forward to listening to the full album.

And we have written all this without one reference to his 'former band' either, not bad eh?

The City And Horses, have been around for several years and just recently sparked new attention with their song "I Miss It All" that was featured in the Paper Heart movie.

The City and Horses is the work of a Brooklyn songwriter and former Cosby Show extra named Marc.  While firmly steeped in the indie tradition, The City and Horse's songs traverse many genres of pop: from twee to power to psychedelic to chamber to folk to lo-fi and back again. The common threads are idiosyncratic vocals, often accompanied by surprising harmonies, and clever and heartfelt lyrics that mix the wit of Stephin Merritt with the wist of Stuart Murdoch (or something).

Anyhow this song came our way and sparked our imagination, the band are now with ever growing Paper Garden Records who seem to have the knack for spotting some 'stuff' we like.

Invisible Elephant is the project of one man and his assortment of randomly acquired instruments, ranging from frog guiros to pre-school toy drum kits. These are melded together with found sounds, synthesizers and spectral vocals to create a dream-like wash of psychedelic noise which defies simple categorisation. Veering from ethereal softly-spoken psych folk to walls of monolithic feedback in a heartbeat, it's difficult to pin the sound down to one genre.

Well that's how the promo describes Invisible Elephant, and on the strength of the featured track we kinda agree. Actually this is a fine way to finish off this 2010FM round up, there have been a few quite contrasting tunes and Invisible Elephant dont let us down. More please!

Jenny Lewis - Live In Orlando 2009

As mentioned in The Watson Twins feature, the pathway that led Beehive Candy to the twins was through Rilo Kiley and their lead singer Jenny Lewis.

It's notable that performing as a solo artist Jenny has an alt country feel that is quite different to the music of Rilo Kiley, and demonstrates another dimension to her musical talent.

Occasionally we feature audienced sourced material here, provided the audio quality is very clean and does the artist and the concert justice, which is the case with this recording.

Recorded live at the Plaza Theater, Orlando, USA, last year on the 29th June this is a really good concert from Jenny Lewis.

Sound Quality: Very Good stereo mp3@192kbps.

Genre:Indie Rock, Alt Country.

Set: Full Concert.

Comments:

In 2004, Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes invited Jenny Lewis to record a solo record for record label Team Love. Described by Jenny Lewis as "a kind of soul record", Rabbit Fur Coat (released January 24, 2006) features contributions from Oberst, M. Ward, and Maroon 5 guitarist James Valentine. Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie (and Lewis's bandmate in The Postal Service) guests on a cover of The Traveling Wilburys' "Handle With Care."

The Watson Twins provide accompaniment on the album, billed as Jenny Lewis with the Watson Twins. Lewis toured with the Watson Twins in support of the album three times in 2006 and appeared with her band on The Late Show With David Letterman, The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson, Late Night With Conan O'Brien and Later with Jools Holland.

In 2008, Lewis released a second solo album, this time without the Watson Twins, titled Acid Tongue.

The Watson Twins - Morning Becomes Eclectic 2007

This is The Watson Twins on KCRW's wonderful Morning Becomes Eclectic programme, this particular performance took place on Monday 9th April 2007 at KCRW Studios, Santa Monica, CA, USA.

I would imagine like a good number of music fans I became aware of The Watson Twins when they recorded 'Rabbit Fur Coat', their collaboration under the name Jenny Lewis with the Watson Twins.

Jenny Lewis was of course the singer with Rilo Kiley, a band that has been mentioned in positive terms here on Beehive Candy in the past.

This set includes a number of songs from their excellent 2006 release 'Southern Manners' and is a good introduction to the band for those unfarmiliar with them.

2010FM - May Edition Two

In support of their new release, Sweet Sister, Annuals are currently touring with The Most Serene Republic and What Laura Says for the first leg of their summer tour .

In 2006, the six members of Raleigh, NC group Annuals earned critical acclaim with their debut album, Be He Me.  Their expansive, energetic sound and tight pop sensibilities captured the hearts and ears of listeners and critics alike, and was followed by, Such Fun, on Canvasback Records in 2008. At an age where many are just starting their careers, Annuals, armed with a reputation for solid songwriting and several years of experience, now goes back to the formula and sound that first cemented their acclaim. The Sweet Sister EP marks band leader Adam Baker's return to the producer role, Annuals' return to a more tight-knit DIY collective, and a pure distillation of their trademark quirky pop experimentalism.

Prepare to be swept away by Vancouver-based Buckman Coe and the debut album “Latest Waking,” released on 3/6/2010 said the press release, well if the couple of tracks I have heard are anything to go by than they may well be spot on.

They went on Produced completely independently and without commercial support, “Latest Waking” represents an artist who, without years of training or formal development, has exposed himself completely, offering listeners a sincere, honest, and unaffected first look into the mind of this burgeoning musician. With beautiful vocal melodies complementing lush soundscapes that evoke the artist’s coastal Vancouver upbringing, “Latest Waking” is a testament to what you can do in the studio without fancy equipment and funding, but with creativity, innovation, a stripped-down approach, and grade-A songwriting.

When I first listened to the featured song I thought of Jeff Buckley and although no one person can really ever replace him this guy has a style that develops fond memories of Jeff whilst having his own quite separate prescence.

Luna is Honey has become a fixture in Los Angeles' burgeoning, increasingly diverse, and always progressive DIY music scene since their inception in 2006.  Having played in various bands together since their early days as goth teens who gradually transitioned into more melodic, more adult, less gaudily-stylized disillusionment, guitarist/vocalist Josh Crampton, drummer Amorn Bholsangngam, beatsmith/soundscape artist Jay Francisco (also known as jbts), and keyboardist Elijah Crampton (also known as E&E) joined forces once more to coalesce their love for punk intensity, pop sensibilities, jazz spontaneity, and dreamy sonic textures.

Having self-released two full-length albums on CD-R and cassette formats (2008's Rhino Sinners and 2009's Raptor Red), the group has crafted what may be their most accessible, most immediately enjoyable release yet. Copy Cats (available now) is a fine introduction to the world of Luna is Honey for those who have lived beyond the reaches of the L.A. music scene and the most accurate representation of the band as a formidable live entity. Bassist Tyler Binkley has joined the ranks to round out the line-up.

Mutts contacted the Beehive directly and pointed us in the direction of their EP 'We Float'.

Intrigued to listen to the three member band centred around Keyboards, Bass and Drums, I have to say right up front that they ooze energy and passion, however they do not use punchy volume to disguise any weaknesses, in fact quite the opposite, yes they are 'loud' but they are a tight well crafted group of musicians worthy of closer inspection, and to make things easy you too can download the EP in return for signing up for their email newsletter. If you do nothing else on this visit, go grab a copy of the EP and introduce yourself to Mutts, and next time you need a quick rock around your room you have the perfect soundtrack!

Oholics are a six-piece psychedelic rock band hailing from Gothenburg, Sweden. They formed in 2005, when they discussed the lack of real rock acts in Sweden. Since then the mission has been to create mind-blowing, beer-fueled rock tunes. The music is often described with reference to early Stones mixed with Pink Floyd, Primal Scream, Oasis, Strokes etc. London meets New York.

They’re also teaming up with Pledge Music, a new interactive site where fans help support the artists, while also contributing to charity. Pledgers have the opportunity of gaining invitations to private events such as an Oholics Beach Party or special fan-only releases. In the case of Oholics, listeners will not only be supporting the album release and a full North American tour, but will also be directly donating to the American Indie Ritual Object Repatriation Foundation. They also happen to tick several Beehive Candy crucial boxes including from Sweden and not suprisingly pretty damn good.

I guess Beehive Candy have been a little slow on the up take with Phildel.

After all her achivements to date include.

- Currently writing with Rupert Christie (who created the string arrangements for Kate Bush's 'Aeriel' album)

- Her music has been featured in a number of high profile advertising campaigns throughout Europe (Expedia 2008, Generali 2009, Marks & Spencer 2010)

- Phildel performed the music for award-winning designer Henrietta Ludgate's fashion collection at London Fashion Week 2010.

- Phildel is collaborating with Peter S. Beegle, renowned fantasy author of The Last Unicorn, on music for the audio version of his upcoming collection of poetry.

- As a child, Phildel was forbidden from playing music in her own home and spent her school recesses writing and practicing her songs, until she ran away at age 17 to pursue her dreams.

She proudly unveiled her newest release in April , ‘Tales From The Moonsea’, a 6-track EP brimming with fantastical, meditative sound-scapes. Released by Warner Chappell Music Publishing, the collection showcases a unique fusion of acoustic folk, neo-classical, and pop-rock traditions and most important of all its just sublime and we love it.

Amy Winehouse - Norway 2007.

This is Amy Winehouse live on the Amfiscenen Stage at the first Hove Festival in Arendal, Norway back on the 26th June 2007.

This is a superb concert and includes a couple of excellent covers (Cupid, and Monkey Man) along with the regular material performed at the time. Despite the obsession of tabloid newspapers over every little flaw and mistake in Amy's life this concert reminds us of just how good an artist she is.

During her 2009 stay in St. Lucia Amy Winehouse worked on new music with producer Salaam Remi. It has been confirmed by Island that a new album is due in 2010, Island co-president Darcus Beese said, "I've heard a couple of song demos that have absolutely floored me".

On 27 April 2010, Winehouse's spokesperson said she was recording new material with Mark Ronson.

Cactus - Buffalo NY 1971

This is Cactus live at Gilligans, Buffalo, New York back on the 26th June 1971. A limited edition 2CD including this gig was also officially released on Rhino Records in 2004 (5000 numbered copies only worldwide) the latter half of the second CD included other live material. This is just the Gilligans gig from a bootleg copy which has been in circulation for a long time.

This was the last performance from the original Cactus line up. A good number of music fans were introduced to the band through the 1972 sampler album 'The New Age Of Atlantic' which included the studio version of Long Tall Sally, which took the song from it's Rock'n'Roll roots to a much heavier rock anthem sound.

2010FM - May Edition One

Welcome to a slightly late edition one of 2010FM for May, and we are gonna tear through this one and as always in no particular order so hang on tight..

Portland's Spirituals are set to release their debut record with Waaga Records on June 22nd.

Spirituals is the moniker for the sample-based electronic music endeavor of drummer, producer, and graphic artist Tyler Tadlock. In his hometown of Jackson, Mississippi, Tyler began experimenting with samples from local free jazz projects and sounds recorded with his laptop to form rhythm driven compositions. After relocating to Portland, OR, he began work on his first album, drawing on a wealth of samples, meticulously chopped and arranged to form electronic music which pays homage his jazz roots.

Next up we feature a song from the soon to be released new album, Hay, Hay, Make A Wish and Turn Away from Portland, Oregon folk-pop five-piece Norman.

Norman we are told embody the Portland, Oregon’s rustic, folk-infused sound. Their latest album is set for release on May 18th via Timber Carnival Records (Portland) and is a notable exciting step in the band’s sound that only further attests to their growing, Northwest popularity. Building off the strength of lead-singer Eric Nordby’s songwriting. It's got that low hung guitar swagger that the Beehive are suckers for and in our ever humble opinion is worth a listen at the very least.

Woodsman is an experimental ambient post-psychedelic band based in Denver, CO. The quartet contains two totemic percussionists and two sonic animators who employ electric guitars, feedback loops, and recorded samples to build the dreamy astral soundscapes that define Woodsman’s sound.

Influenced by hazy mountain passes, the cinema of Stan Brakhage, and early 1970’s improvisational recordings by Miles Davis Woodsman has crafted aural offerings that are uniquely their own.

They have an EP 'Mystery Tape' due for release on June 1st on Lefse Records from which we feature a track which kinda fits the above well copied and pasted description of the band - seriously they are worth checking out if ambient dreamy is your thing.

Hunter Valentine just dominated The MTV-U video contest ‘The Freshman’ while GO! Magazine named them the “Best Local Band in New York.” On April 18th “The Stalker” made its debut on MTV’s LGBT channel, Logo, and went on to be the Video of the Day on Spinner.com.

Even more outlets have come on to support the band including: Marie Claire, Venuszine, Blender, Curve, AOL, East Village Radio, Tattoo Savage, Modern Drummer and more.

After an amicable defection from their native Canada, the “infectiously catchy” garage rock trio have embraced Bushwick, Brooklyn as their new home. 1 album. 3 women. 7 blistering tracks. Hunter Valentine’s Lessons From The Late Night was released yesterday (11th May) on Tommy Boy, how could the Beehive refuse giving this a mention (it's a girl group thing, and at my age...).

8000 bam bam (Samuel Cooper) & Baby Seal ( Brady Keehn), the two members of Sunglasses met at Savannah College of Art and Design. The two came to Savannah in search of finding creative friends who shared the same interest and goals.

They first started working together on Samuel’s Senior thesis film, MILES. The film, written and directed Cooper, was an 8 1/2 inspired black and white musical short film in which Keehn supervised the sound design. After the project was completed they were surprised that the work flow was so consistent and enjoyable that the two immediately began the next project, Sunglasses.

With Sunglasses, the two wanted to combine Samuel’s love for pop songs with Brady’s obsession with bass and multi-layered beats. Recently completing their debut EP, Sunglasses plans on touring the East Coast slowly making their way to New York City, eventually moving to Maryland to record the full length at Brady’s Lake House.

Pure Ecstasy and Sleep Over  announce a split 7" to be released May 25th via Light Lodge.

Sleep Over's track "Your World is Night" previously appeared on a super-limited cassette release premiered by Gorilla vs. Bear back in January, while Pure Ecstasy's contribution "Dream Over" first surfaced Friday via Pitchfork.

Both songs are quite unique, however share a calming atmospheric sound and remind me of music from the likes of the Cocteau Twins among others. We have the OK to share both songs on the Beehive.

Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Mark McAdam has released his third solo album, “Paper Man Songs”, a unique collection of material written in and around the perspectives of the characters featured in the recently released independent comedy, Paper Man (starring Jeff Daniels, Ryan Reynolds, & Lisa Kudrow). With stories so aptly linked to the film, a number of the songs found their way into the final cut. Much more than a typical film soundtrack, “Paper Man Songs” is a beautiful accompaniment album inspired by, and featured in the motion picture.

After film directors Kieran and Michele Mulroney tapped Mark to provide original music, he began writing songs that would eventually form the musical foundation for the movie. Upon completing the production of Paper Man, Mark realized he had written enough original songs to compile a strong stand-alone record. The folk-tinged, indie-rock tracks highlight the power of a well-played lap steel, cleverly building vocal hooks and subtly entwined harmonies around stories as unique as the characters they were drawn from. As a teaser we have finished this addition with the instrumental first track, this is a great album and worthy of further investigation!
