Leonard Cohen - Gothenburg Sweden 1993

This is Leonard Cohen from 1993 touring around the time of 'The Future' being released, (his last tour until now).

Due to appear at Glastonbury this year and also touring from June 2008 in Canada and Europe,
if you get a chance to see him live, take it!

Having released three 'official' live albums, this is the first live material I have heard from 'The Future' era, and it is extremely good.

The man remains a massive influence in music, and now in his seventies, is as eagerly anticipated, as at any other time in his forty year musical career.

This was recorded from an FM broadcast of the concert at the Lisebergshallen, Gothenburg, Sweden, on the 2nd May 1993.

The set list was:

01. [6:56.67] The Future
02. [5:00.68] Ain't No Cure for Love
03. [6:23.33] Bird on the Wire (radio announcer)
04. [6:44.43] First We Take Manhattan
05. [4:14.05] Suzanne
06. [5:47.54] I'm Your Man
07. [6:58.47] Joan of Arc
08. [7:45.00] Closing Time
09. [5:58.58] Hallelujah (radio announcer)

The band line up was:

Leonard Cohen - vocals, keyboards, acoustic guitar
Perla Batalla - vocals
Julie Christensen - vocals
Bob Metzger - guitars, pedal steel guitar
Bob Furgo - keyboards, violin
Paul Ostermayer - keyboards, saxophone, flute
Bill Ginn - keyboards
Jorge Calderon - bass
Steve Meador - drums

Sound quality is extremely good 224kbps stereo.

The Go-Go's - Live In LA 1984

This is the Go-Go's in their 1980's hey day.

They made rock history as the first all-woman band that both wrote their own songs and played their own instruments to top the Billboard album charts in the USA.

Their energetic music spanned surf, new wave, pop-punk, power pop, and rock.

Although Belinda Carlisle has had considerable success as a solo artist, the Go-Go's are very much on equal terms with each other, as is evidenced by this concert.

I do not have the precise location or exact date for this gig, beyond LA, California in 1984. This is a superb and lively performance.

Set list is:

01 Get Up and Go
02 Head Over Heels
03 Our Lips Are Sealed
04 Forget That Day
05 We Got The Beat
06 Turn To You
07 Tonight
08 You Thought
09 Yes Or No
10 I'm With You
11 This Town
12 Can't Stop The World
13 Vacation - I'm The Only One

Band Line Up:

Belinda Carlisle
Jane Wiedlin
Charlotte Caffey
Kathy Valentine
Gina Schock

This is probably FM stereo rather than soundboard, it is either way a very good quality recording.

Nick Drake - Second Grace

I do not intend to write about Nick Drake here, except to echo the common view held by so many, who have come across his music down the years, of 'what could have been'.

His short life is well documented HERE, and I would only end up copy and pasting excerpts, so spend a few minutes at Wikipedia if you choose.

His three studio albums remain firm favorites of mine, and fall into that very special 'timeless' category.

The unofficial releases of Nick Drake tend to be demo's and home recordings, as is the case of 'Second Grace'.

Bootlegs in circulation include 'Tamworth-In-Arden', 'Complete Home Recordings' and variations on that theme.

Second Grace has appeared in at least three different forms, this version is originally from a 25 track CD circulated by 'Mirrorglass Music'.

These are home recordings probably at Tamworth and possibly Hampstead, and cover all three album releases in part, along with some unreleased tracks.

The sound quality is very good and the tracks that also appeared on 'Tamworth-In-Arden' are of a much higher quality.

Track Listing:

1. Day Is Done
2. Blossom Friend
3. Mayfair 1
4. Mayfair 2
5. Mayfair 3
6. Joey 1
7. Joey 2
8. Leaving Me Behind
9. Instrumental 1
10. Instrumental 2
11. Three Hours
12. Betty's Blues
13. Fly 1
14. Fly 2
15. Hazey Jane
16. Parasite
17. Saturday Sun 1
18. Saturday Sun 2
19. Saturday Sun 3
20. Place To Be
21. Strange Meeting II
22. Bird Flew By
23. Thoughts Of Rain
24. To The Garden
25. Early Morning Dialogue

Abba - Live Compilation

This particular recording is circulated as 'Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This'.

Probably better as a recording band, Abba none the less were highly successful on their tours, and with Anni-Frid and Agnetha fronting the performances, were not short of glamour!

This live performance is as I understand, recorded from the 1981 concerts taped for the Dick Cavett Meets Abba TV special, in the USA.

Some of the cuts are I think commercially available on Thank You For The Music and Abba Live, however for completeness I have included all of the boot here. Apart from that I do not have any other information on this particular bootleg.

As a whole this is possibly better than the official releases, and some have said is the best Abba live album never made.

Set list:

1. Voulez-Vous (4:44)
2. Knowing Me Knowing You (4:30)
3. Chiquitita (5:29)
4. Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight) (5:06)
5. Super Trouper (4:31)
6. I Have A Dream (6:35)
7. The Name Of The Game/Eagle (9:26)
8. Thank You For The Music (3:10)
9. Two For The Price Of One (3:10)
10. Slipping Through My Fingers (4:04)
11. Me And I (4:19)
12. Summer Night City (5:29)
13. Take A Chance On Me (4:33)
14. The Way Old Friends Do (3:06)
15. Waterloo (3:31)
16. Dancing Queen (3:45)

Audio quality is very good stereo soundboard.

INXS - Concert For Life - Sydney Australia 1992

I was one of 72000 people who enjoyed INXS at Wembley Stadium, London, eight months prior to this concert.

They were pretty cool in London, and still rocking, when they got back home to Australia at this event.

The London concert was released officially, this boot really compliments that release.

Their Sydney performance was broadcast locally on FM, however their final song of the show was not aired. A rare audience recording of the last song has been included here for completeness, and is a must for any INXS fan.

This then is INXS performing at the Concert for Life, in Centennial Park, Sydney on the 28th March 1992.

Set list:

01. Guns in the Sky
02. Send a Message
03. The Stairs
04. Mystify
05. Bitter Tears
06. Taste It
07. Need You Tonight
08. Mediate
09. Disappear
10. All Around
11. Suicide Blonde
12. What You Need
13. Kick
14. Never Tear Us Apart
15. Baby Don't Cry (Audience - partially remastered)

With the exception of the final track this is an excellent FM stereo recording at 192kbps.

Reloaded - 03/June/2013 - download link in comments.

Whats Up Doc - Number Nine - April 2008

A second helping of 'Whats Up Doc' this month, exclusively for The Puppini Sisters.

OK I am a little late as their second album was released in February, and yes, they have received considerable attention in the UK media, however just in case you have missed them, here's an unashamed plug from the Beehive!

The Puppini Sisters led the British retro wave in 2006 with their 1940’s-influenced blend of pop with swing, a gorgeous sense of glamour, and fun.

Their debut record, Betcha Bottom Dollar, was the fastest selling jazz debut in Britain on its release, also debuting at number 2 on the US jazz charts and in the Top 10 of Billboard’s Heatseekers chart.

In that vein, their second album The Rise & Fall Of Ruby Woo is a collection of highly original songs written by the trio, including “I Can’t Believe I’m Not A Millionaire” and “Jilted,” as well as extraordinary covers of tunes by artists ranging from Barry Manilow to BeyoncÈ. The Puppinis’ trademark watertight harmonies are still present, as is their love of and respect for music from a bygone era.

Elvis Costello and The Attractions - Live In The USA - 1978

Declan Patrick MacManus aka Elvis Costello was one of a good number of energetic performers on the London 'pub' circuit in the mid 1970's.

He was linked to the 'punk' scene and perhaps more fittingly to the development of 'new wave' music.

This recording is from his first USA tour in 1978, with material from his 1977 debut (My Aim Is True), and his then forthcoming new album 'This Years Model'.

The frenetic energy of Elvis Costello and The Attractions is recaptured in full on this recording.

Performing live at The Warner Theater, Washington DC, USA on the 28th February 1978, the concert was broadcast on WHFS-FM.

Set List is:

1.Pump it up.
2.Waiting for the end of the world.
3.No action.
4.Less than zero.
5.The beat.
6.(The angels wanna wear my) Red shoes.
7.(I don't want to go to) Chelsea.
8.Hand in hand.
9.Little triggers.
10.Radio radio.
11.You belong to me.
12.Lipstick vogue.
13.Watching the detectives.
14.Mystery dance.
15.Miracle man
16.Blame it on Cain.
17.Chemistry class.

Sound quality is very good stereo FM and edited down to the full concert performance only.

Wilco - Live In Seattle - 2002

This is what the UK's Uncut Magazine had to say about Wilco in 2007.

'Sometime in the late 1980s, Jeff Tweedy and some friends from Belleville, Illinois, formed a band called Uncle Tupelo. They were pretty good, as it happens, but the impact they had was phenomenal. By fusing American roots music with the scrappy vigour of punk and grunge, Uncle Tupelo accidentally kicked off the entire alternative country scene. Quite an achievement.

But that wasn’t good enough for Jeff Tweedy. In 1994, Uncle Tupelo split up, and Tweedy began a quest to stretch the parameters of what we could loosely call Americana - though he’d probably baulk at the term himself. Tweedy put together Wilco and, over the course of six studio albums, various elaborate and rewarding projects and multiple gifted line-ups, the band have become one of the most inventive and popular bands in America'.

Praise indeed, and having listened to their music over the years, I tend to agree that Wilco are one high quality band.

You can listen to a more recent Wilco concert in full HERE from February 27th 2008, recorded by NPR, in the USA.

The recording I have to share is a remastered soundboard recording, and captures the band in really good form and mood.

Set List is:

1. Spiders (Kidsmoke)
2. I'm Trying To Break Your Heart

Franz Ferdinand - Live In Amsterdam 2006

Franz Ferdinand seem to have survived the curse of the 'Mercury Music Prize' and a third album is due out later this year (October 08).

The new album will apparently have an 'African' feel to it (they recently performed at the Africa Express show in Liverpool).

Anyway this particular concert has a Franz Ferdinand feel to it (music that girls can dance to), and reminds us that they breathed life back into the British music scene not so long ago, even if they do remind me of The Jam.

Performing in Amsterdam on the 11th March 2006 this set comprises of songs from the first two albums:

01 - Cheating On You
02 - Jacqueline
03 - Tell Her Tonight
04 - Shopping For Blood
05 - Take Me Out
06 - Love And Destroy
07 - Truck Stop
08 - This Fire
09 - Michael
10 - Darts Of Pleasure

Paul Thomson - drums

Bob Marley - Paris Theatre London 1973

Bob Marley and the Wailers undertook the 'Catch A Fire' tour from April 27th to July 21st 1973, in the UK and then finishing in the USA.

The set list varied from show to show on this tour, however this gig captures those songs most frequently performed, and includes both Peter Tosh compositions (Stop That Train and 400 Years).

The running order is also fairly typical of the gigs where these songs were performed.

This concert was at The BBC's Paris Theatre in London, the line up included Wailers stalwarts Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer.

The concert lasted just 45 minutes and an additional performance of Jammin' recorded at Pittsburgh in 1980 is included at the end.

This then is Bob Marley and the Wailers live at the BBC Paris Theatre, on the 24th May 1973.

Set list is:

1. Rastafarian Chant
2. Slave Driver
3. Stop The Train
4. No More Trouble
5. 400 Years
6. Midnight Raver
7. Stir It Up
8. Concrete Jungle
9. Get Up Stand Up
10. Kinky Reggae

Re broadcast by BBC Radio 6 this is an excellent quality 320kbps stereo recording, unedited just let it play!

America - Live In Boston 1975

America (the band) formed in 1970.

By the time of this concert in 1975, they were in the process of releasing their first 'greatest hits' album.

With five albums released by 1975 (the first two went platinum, the following three gold), the band who formed in London (UK), had achieved popularity and commercial success both sides of the Atlantic.

Bon Jovi - Milwaukee, USA, 1985

This is Bon Jovi live, back on the 29th June 1985, at the Milwaukee WI, Summerfest in the USA.

I had the pleasure of seeing Bon Jovi perform at the final concert at the old Wembley Stadium, London in 2000, prior to the place being demolished and rebuilt.

I was never a great fan of Bon Jovi however I was impressed on than night, and even if the show was a little bit 'show biz' rather than just rock'n'roll, it was easy to understand why they sell out stadiums with ease.

This boot, is from the period just prior to them hitting major success with their third album 'Slippery When Wet'.

The concert was I understand circulated as 'Get Ready' on the Japanese boot label Bondage.

Set list was:

1. Tokyo Road
2. Breakout
3. Only Lonely
4. She Don't Know Me
5. Shot Through The Heart
6. Ritchie Sambora guitar solo/In And Out Of Love
7. Runaway

Band line up was:

Jon Bon Jovi (lead vocals, rhythm guitar)
Richie Sambora (lead guitar, backing vocals)
David Bryan (keyboard, backing vocals)
Tico Torres (drums, percussion)
Alec John Such (bass guitar, backing vocals)

This is an excellent recording, from the FM stereo broadcast of their show.

Yes - Live In Chile 1998

A while back I was emailed asking if I had any Yes bootlegs ( I accidentally deleted the message, so apologies to the sender for never replying).

The answer was of course yes.

I recently came across this show, and one song prompted me to start featuring the band.

Lets take a step back. I have most official Yes material both on vinyl and CD, so I have to admit more than a passing interest in the band.

That said, down the years I have also found them infuriating!

The self indulgent, pretentious, 'prog rock at it's worst' moments, have left me cringing, and the stage costumes in the seventies and eighties, a million miles from street credibility, can only make me gag.

However, and a very big however at that! in the right mood and on the right day, Yes can still make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

It was one particular track inclusion on this boot, that even before listening, had me poised for a little neck hair rising. The song in question is 'America' the cover version they perform of the Simon and Garfunkel original.

I first came across this on 'The New Age Of Atlantic' album back in 1971 (I think it was 71). In fact revisiting both 'The Age of Atlantic' and 'The New Age Of Atlantic' albums, has prompted me to do another post on these 'sampler' albums, so more about them another time.

I have often wondered what Yes would have sounded like, and developed into, if they had been a no nonsense rock'n'roll band, maybe this concert and in particular the inclusion of 'America' gives us all a hint.

This is Yes live on the 21st of May 1998, in Santiago, Chile, at the Monumental El Teatro, in front of around 6000 adoring fans.

The set list is:

1. Firebird Suite
2. Siberian Khatru
3. Rhythm Of Love
4. America
5. Open Your Eyes
6. And You And I
7. Heart Of The Sunrise
8. Mood For A Day/Winter/Guitar Boogie/Clap
9. From The Balcony
10. Wonderous Stories
11. Khoroshev Solo
12. Long Distance Runaround/Whitefish/Alan White Solo/Ritual
13. Owner Of A Lonely Heart
14. Santiago
15. I've Seen All Good People
16. Roundabout
17. Starship Trooper

The band line up was:

Jon Anderson (Vocals)
Steve Howe (Guitars)
Billy Sherwood (Guitars)
Chris Squire (Bass)
Alan White (Drums)
Igor Khoroshev (Keyboards)

This is a good quality soundboard recording (raw and funky, turn up the volume and enjoy).

Creedence Clearwater Revival - Woodstock Festival 1969

This is Creedence Clearwater Revival, live at Woodstock.

John Fogerty felt the band's performance was below standard on the night, this was after all CCR at their peak of success both live and commercially.

As a result their concert did not appear on the Woodstock soundtrack or film, (several CCR tracks from the event were included in the 1990s commemorative box set.)

The band also complained that they had to take the stage at three in the morning because The Grateful Dead had jammed far past their scheduled set time, (and many of the audience had gone to sleep - no change there then - sorry Dead-Heads).

All of that said and having listened to this boot of the show, I have to say I think they were harsh on themselves, this is full on CCR, at a true moment in musical history.

This then is Creedence Clearwater Revival on August 16th 1969, live at Woodstock.

Set List:

01 Born on the Bayou
02 Green River
03 Ninity Nine and a Half
04 Bootleg
05 Commotion
06 Bad Moon Rising
07 Proud Mary
08 I Put a Spell on You
09 The Night Time is the Right Time
10 Keep on Chooglin'
11 Suzie Q

This is very good quality from the remastered stereo soundboard recordings.

There is a small amount of CCR material in the Beehive Candy Store.

Free - Isle Of Wight Festival - 1970

The 1970 Isle of Wight festival was the third and final year of the early festivals history.

With an estimated 600,000 people in attendance both the organisers and the islanders had enough after this event.

Free were a young band who first came together to rehearse at the Nag's Head pub in Battersea, London, on April 19, 1968.

Bass player Andy Fraser, was only 15 years old while lead singer Paul Rodgers, lead guitarist Paul Kossoff, and drummer Simon Kirke, were also still teenagers.

It would have been hard to imagine that just over two years later they would perform to such a large audience.

Just three years later in 1973 the band disbanded, however they left classics such as 'All Right Now' and 'Wishing Well' along with some superb album tracks for posterity.

This is Free live at East Afton Farm, Freshwater, Isle of Wight, England, the home for the third festival, on Sunday 30th August 1970.

Set List:

01 Ride on a Pony
02 Woman
03 The Stealer
04 Be my Friend
05 Mr Big
06 Fire and Water
07 I'm a Mover
08 The Hunter
09 All Right Now
10 Crossroads

This is a stereo soundboard @ 192Kbps and for the year is excellent.

A Flock Of Seagulls - Brighton 1983

Mike Score (lead vocals, keyboards) formed A Flock of Seagulls with his brother Ali (drums) and Frank Maudsley (bass) in 1980, adding guitarist Paul Reynolds several months later.

The group released its debut EP early in 1981, and while the record failed to chart, its lead track, 'Telecommunication' became an underground hit in Euro-disco and new wave clubs.

The band signed a major-label contract with Jive by the end of the year, and their eponymous debut album appeared in the spring of 1982.

'I Ran (So Far Away)' was released as the first single from the album, and MTV quickly picked up on its video, which featured long shots of Mike Score and his distinctive, cascading hair.

The single climbed into the American Top Ten, taking the album along with it. In the U.K., 'I Ran' didn't make the Top 40 (highest position 43), but 'Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You)' reached number ten later that year.

Which in commercial terms was the high end of the bands success.

Mike Score continues to tour under the band's name with a new line-up, but the other original members have retired from music.

However the lasting quality of some of their material, and those haircuts, those wonderful 1980's haircuts, have preserved the band in rock history.

This is from the period that etched the band into the memories of many.

Recorded in Brighton, England on the 5-1-1983, the music is fresh and the band in the ascendancy.

Set list.

1. The Fall
2. Space Age Love Song
3. D.N.A.
4. Electrics
5. Messages
6. Standing in the Doorway
7. The Traveller
8. Committed
9. Man Made
10. You Can Run
11. Wishing (If I Had A Photograph Of You)
12. I Ran (So Far Away)

Comments.

Source is probably BBC FM stereo, sound quality is warm and very good.

Whats Up Doc - Number Seven - March 2008

Welcome to this months 'Whats Up Doc'.

They have been called 'pop surrealists' and 'new wave kooks', their original 'trade mark hairstyles' clearly have had an influence on this blog, whatever, they are The B52's, and in these dark times, any band that can pick up sixteen years after they left off, with some fun music gets my vote!

The new album 'Funplex' is due out later this month, and here are two songs and two versions of the title track including a CSS remix, (CSS are just one of numerous bands to happily admit the positive impact The B52's have had on their music).

Another favorite band of The Beehive are The Black Crowes, who finally have their new album 'Warpaint' out, as of yesterday.

Recently insulted by Maxim magazine who reviewed and graded the album without even hearing it! The Black Crowes have released a fine album, that as you would expect, has their genuine rock'n'roll, low slung guitar sound, with Chris Robinson's vocals as consistent as ever.

It is just rock music, that's what they do, this will be played by many grateful fans of the band, that does not know how to sell out!

Baltimore duo Beach House are a superb 'ethereal mood' music act.

Well I think they are superb, they are one of those bands I discovered by chance, along with a dozen of other music bloggers by the looks, in my case I had an indie music stream running in the background and their song shone out immensely (did I just type that?).

The album 'Devotion' is out now, please give them a listen if you have not done so as yet, hopefully you will see where I am coming from.

Supergrass have literally grown up playing music, and at an average age of thirty years per band member, they are at some levels 'elder statesmen' of British post 'Britpop' music.

I have enjoyed every album they have released, and sense that in the cynical music press here in the UK, they have a rather unique position of pleasing both critic and your average punter, because they remain so very relevant.

The new album 'Diamond Hoo Ha' is to put it in Supergrass terms a stonker, with the usual energy levels and craftsmanship that makes this very British band so internationally fine.

I am conscious that this month is very UK and USA orientated, so lets finish with Sweden's The Cardigans, who have a 'Best Of' recently released.

Just one well known track to share, go buy the album, you may be surprised on the goodies you have missed out on, unless your a fan in which case you already know!

I hope this review has been of use, and as always I leave you with a song that has no relevance to the above at all.

Echo And The Bunnymen - Kilburn National 1997

Echo & the Bunnymen formed in Liverpool in 1978 making them a whopping thirty years old this year, and as always reminding me of my own state of aging!

Their original lineup included vocalist Ian McCulloch and guitarist Will Sergeant, who both continue to be, the main stays of the band.

The band are scheduled to play a sell out show in September this year at London's Royal Albert Hall, complete with an orchestra to perform the album 'Ocean Rain'.

A little removed from their 'post punk' beginnings in Liverpool three full decades ago.

Anyhow, this is from just one decade ago and features Echo and The Bunnymen live at The Kilburn National, in London on the 17th October 1997.

This concert was broadcast by the BBC, and this is a good quality FM stereo recording of the gig.

Set list is:

1. Rescue.
2. I want to be there when you come.
3. Baseball Bill.
4. The Cutter.
5. Just a touch away.
6. Crocodiles.
7. Forgiven.
8. I'll fly tonight.
9. Seven seas.

Madonna - Barcelona Spain - 1990

This is Madonna live on the 1990 Blond Ambition Tour.

This particular show from the 31st July 1990 was performed at the Estadi Olímpic, Barcelona, Spain, and featured a seven minutes long extravagant fireworks display after the show.
The show apparently had a few glitches.
Numerous technical mistakes included Madonna forgetting part of the lyrics to "Sooner or Later" and "Material Girl," and getting her monocle caught on her head-microphone at the beginning of "Express Yourself".

Not realizing that her headset microphone was still live as she exited the stage after "Where's the Party," resulted in her command at a backstage crew member to "Get the f### out of my f#####' way" and complaints about the oppressive heat to be broadcast to the audience while the dancers performed during the closing of the number.
Also, at the end of "Holiday" a man came on stage and put a shirt on Madonna to promote a product as Madonna commented "Anybody gonna arrest this man?"
Later, in the beginning of "Keep It Together", she told her audience, "Strange people walk on my stage, they put s### on me, I can't hear myself...I'd like to f####g kill somebody."
All this and the fact the overall tour was controversial in its own right - Marvelous stuff !!!

Sound quality: The show was taped and aired on television in Europe and Australia, and this is a pristine audio stereo soundboard copy of the show for your pleasure.

Set List:

01. Express Yourself
02. Open your Heart
03. Causing a Commotion
04. Where's the Party
05. Like a Virgin
06. Like a Prayer
07. Live to Tell

09. Papa Don't Preach
10. Sooner or Later
11. Hanky Panky
12. Now I'm Following You
13. Material Girl
14. Cherish
15. Into the Groove
16. Vogue
17. Holiday
18. Keep it Together
