Chloey Rose - desert life - Deidre & the Dark & Violet Sands - Sara Noelle - After The Flesh - Zola Courtney

Chloey Rose - Shot You Down.

Delivering powerful pop songs with a theatrical twist, Chloey Rose has been captivating audiences at major venues up and down the UK and in Europe with her dramatic, soaring vocals that have attracted comparisons to Adele and Paloma Faith.

Drawing inspiration from Kate Bush and Taylor Swift, Chloey has just released brand new single ‘Shot You Down’, an edgy pop ballad full of dark sounds that could become the theme tune for the next James Bond Movie.

‘Shot You Down’ follows the story of being in an unhealthy relationship and the strength it can take to walk away. Written by Chloey Rose and produced by Aron Bicskey, the track builds from smoky late night piano atmospheres to become a powerful anthem for getting up again once you’ve been cut down, with a nod to Nancy Sinatra’s classic track ‘Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)’.

As a songwriter, Rose’s debut single ‘Golden Dreams’ was released in 2016, followed by a string of singles including ‘Hearts On The Line’, which was named Track Of The Week on BBC Radio Lincolnshire and A Best Track of 2021. Not only, a talented singer-songwriter, Rose was a finalist in Miss Lincolnshire in 2018/19 and has also been cutting her acting chops, with the leading role as Ruth Ellis in ‘The Thrill of Love’ and as Leading lady Nina in the BBC’s ‘First World War Musical Show’, amongst numerous other stage and TV appearances.

The video for ‘Shot You Down’ (to be unveiled in the coming weeks) sees Chloey on neon-lit streets in the twilight hours as she searches for answers. The track weaves its hypnotic repeating refrains around her, growing and growing with intensity as she works through her emotions. “I’ll paint your name all over this town”, Chloey sings in this epically woven ballad which combines big production values with raw feelings to really work its way under the listener’s skin.

desert life - I Don’t Wanna Know.

Alt-folk/Americana artist, desert life, released their single “I don’t wanna know” a week ago.  Their first release in 4 years, it includes Jon Graboff (Ryan Adams and the Cardinals, Norah Jones, Willy Nelson and Noel Gallagher) on Pedal steel guitar.  It’s a song that sounds as if it was written on the back roads of Nashville, rather than near the sandy beaches of Tenby.  The upbeat acoustic guitar and soaring lap steel guitar, makes you want to put on cowboy boots, rather than a wetsuit.  The song is the tale of how a man's heart sank as he received word of his ex-girlfriend's newfound love.

Desert Life is the moniker of Chris Swales, a Pontypridd born, Tenby based alt-folk / singer-songwriter, and multi instrumentalist, Tom Jordan.  Conceived in 2018, Chris originally released material in a ‘bedroom artist’ guise following an off-the-cuff collaboration with poet Brian ‘Old Pa’ Mackenzie.  Then when Chris started playing the material live, he met Tom at some local open mic events, and quickly realised that they had a strong musical connection and expanded into a duo..

They blend Americana/Alt-folk music with songs that contain imagery of hope, loss and isolation, yet do not take themselves too seriously.  Comparisons to Bon Iver, Jeff Tweedy and Ryan Adams can be heard in some of their songs, yet, the next moment you might think you’re listening to the sonic landscapes of Calexico.

They have played throughout West Wales, at The Swansea Fringe Festival and Lush.  Their first-ever release ‘Not my girl’ was aired by BBC Wales’ Adam Walton via BBC Introducing.  ‘Whisper to the Wind’ won a Syncr Music Competition, and ‘My darling friend’ was the runner-up in the Radio Wigwam’s ‘best single’ category.  They also made the Record Store Day 'Unsigned (2019) long list'.

Deidre & the Dark & Violet Sands - Desert Rental Home.

Were more than happy to feature the new single and collaboration from Brooklyn based Violet Sands and Deidre & the Dark. Deidre & the Dark is the solo project of Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter Deidre Muro (previously founding front-woman of Savoir Adore). Violet Sands is a sonic trio made up of long-time collaborators Deidre Muro, Derek Muro, and David Perlick-Molinari (French Horn Rebellion).

On “Desert Rental Home,” these two creative forces dance together on the only song Deidre was able to write during the pandemic lockdown in 2020. “During months of quarantine, this was the one song that managed to come out of me. I was feeling very isolated at home with my 1 year-old son while David, my husband, kept our business afloat, working out of a makeshift bedroom studio, for most of the hours of most of the days.

Delusion starts creeping in when you’re unsure how long this will be reality.” Intimate moments of acoustic guitar and voice quickly transform into a grandiose fantasy, soaring and sparkling, while a lurching synth bass hints at the uneasy nature of an escapist dream.

After The Flesh - Changeling.

On the heels of their self-titled 4-song EP in May 2023, After the Flesh from Wellington, New Zealand, share ‘Changeling’: the EP’s captivating new video-single, which just made its international debut on Friday via Europe’s legendary Side-Line Magazine. The band’s sound skilfully brings together elements of ethereal gothic dreampop, new wave, post-punk, and modern dark alternative rock.

Formed on the approaches to 2020, After the Flesh showcases the talents of Slovenian-born vocalist and keyboardist Maruša Sagadin (“Marusha”); guitarist and vocalist Alec Morris; veteran local bassist Duncan Nairn; and later addition Sam Leamy on drums.

The new ‘Changeling’ video is filmed and directed by Martin Sagadin (sibling of Maruša), who explains: “After the Flesh asked me to do a video after we did a photo shoot at the Pūtangirua Pinnacles, where we were in the harsh daylight among the cliffs. We decided the next project would be very glamorous, dramatic and interior, layered in plastic and projection, while paying tribute to some of our favourite New Wave music videos…”

Zola Courtney - California.

Credible British Songwriter Zola Courtney shares an incredibly heartswelling moment and single called “California.” With vocals and writing that swoon, It’s a song fitting for an epic movie montage where flashing memories turn into poetic music between that post break-up ‘what have I done’ and the affirmation phases.

Speaking about the song, Zola explains “California was written in the early stages, during the ‘what have I done’ phase of the breakup. I kept thinking about specific moments in the relationship that had meant a huge amount to me.”

“I did a writing trip to California when I was 19 and had a really awful time. My boyfriend   at the timeflew out to be with me and I’m still so grateful he did that. That was near the beginning of our relationship and New York was the last place we visited together. The song talks about these bookend moments, as well as feelings of doubt and regret, but also care and admiration for him and all the things we did together.”

Zola Courtney today returns to releasing music after playing extensive shows across the county since her last single.  The last single from her debut EP “Nothing To Lose” saw the talented Cornwall native garner withspread support from BBC Radio 1 specialist DJs, and  was later added to their playlist and onto their One Big Weekend festival line-up. She's also enjoyed online tastemaker support from the likes of Complex, Milk.xyz, Clash, Notion & Wonderland to name but a few.

Tamar Berk - Chonna - Jess Nolan - Mull Historical Society

Tamar Berk - if u know, u know.

Noted indie darling Tamar Berk is excited to share “if u know, u know”, the second single from her upcoming third album tiny injuries, out August 18th. The new single “if u know, u know” comes on the heels of last month’s first single “drop in the bucket”.

"If u know, u know" utilizes Tamar Berk's spirited vocals to explore existential crises caused by loss, reminiscent of Soccer Mommy, Aimee Mann, and Liz Phair for an alternative pop edge.

In describing the new track, Tamar Berk writes: “I recently learned that we are always mourning something...a child leaving home, houses, cities, jobs, friends, marriage, a death, ourselves...our youth." Getting older has its advantages...but what I dislike most is how long the list of things I mourn has become. When you know, you know."

Her lyrics hint at her existential crisis, where she's still coping with feelings of confusion, isolation and dislocation after her dad's absence: "The sun comes up but I'm already down/Wander from room to room, but you're nowhere to be found."

Chonna - Teach Me.

Indie-soul singer songwriter Chonna is proud to release her new single "Teach Me".

Chonna is gearing up to release her forthcoming LP “Don’t Judge” later this year, which trapezes complexities of life such as self-acceptance, growth, and human relationships. The first taste of the album,  "Teach Me"  accurately represents the different types of seeds required to plant a healthy partnership. Another underlying theme the track uncovers is the struggle to fully accept and love oneself.

Recorded at The Music Vault Academy in Orange County, "Teach Me" trades out a more conventional song approach for a stripped down ballad setting. Underneath a strong piano motif and choir-like backup vocals, Chonna’s emotional lyrics glisten. In addition, a bouncy guitar riff wiggles its way in at certain parts of the track, adding a funklike vibe to the aforementioned atmosphere.

Chonna’s musical endeavors continue to stray towards healing and self-discovery, and her songs are open invites for others to embark on that journey with her. On "Teach Me", the concept of self-love is vitalized. The uplifting track showcases the doubts and uncertainties present when entering a new relationship, and hopes to normalize these feelings. Sonically, Chonna’s unique vocal timbre is reminiscent of Sigrid and Anna of the North.

Jess Nolan - Windowpanes.

Nashville-based singer-songwriter Jess Nolan has released “Windowpanes,” the latest single and its hypnotic, accompanying video from her forthcoming LP, ‘93. The 10-track treasure is due on September 8th via Ani DiFranco’s label, Righteous Babe Records.

"Back in the summer of 2021, I picked up an old beater guitar that had been collecting dust on my wall. I’ve been a piano player my whole life but something about strumming in open tuning helped me tap into a childlike state to channel 'Windowpanes,'” Nolan recalls. “It came through after a heated phone call with a friend about a political topic that we vehemently disagreed on. Talking to them felt like hitting a brick wall.”

“This song is meant to be a meditation for finding common ground. It’s become a white flag for the difficult conversations we find ourselves in with people close to us. Empathy can be a window to understanding,” she adds. “To record it, I brought in my dear friends, Katie Pruitt and Kyshona, and we stood around one mic to sing the chorus - a call for unity in the face of so much divisiveness." The video was created by fellow artist Grouch Bucket, who animated Nolan’s visual art.

Nolan is an old soul and a skilled creator who continuously channels a palate of creative endeavors. A member of Jenny Lewis’ all-female touring band, she is an in-demand collaborator, lending her writing, vocal, and instrumentalist talents to projects by artists like Joy Oladokun, Katie Pruitt, Lydia Luce, and more.

The seeds of her new LP, ’93, sprouted in the height of 2020. In the midst of the initial involuntary stillness, she planted a backyard vegetable garden, moved her involvement in mentoring young female songwriters online, and traveled back to her New Jersey hometown to stay with family for weeks at a time. In the face of uncertainty, strong, deeply-rooted feelings came pouring out, resulting in 10 poignant reflections on rebirth, reconnection, and mindfulness.

Mull Historical Society - Panicked Feathers.

On what will be his first album since 2018’s ‘Wakelines’, Colin MacIntyre’s upcoming album ‘In My Mind There’s A Room’ was written in collaboration with thirteen world-renowned authors; each of whom were asked to write about a room of special significance to them.

Enlisting the talents of Nick Hornby, an author whose passion for music is well-documented across his bestselling pop-fiction classics like ‘High Fidelity’, ‘Juliet, Naked’ and ‘About A Boy’, the pair’s meeting of minds has produced the anthemic new song “Panicked Feathers”.

Written by Hornby (with additional music and lyrics added by MacIntyre), the single transports the listener back to his teenage bedroom through lyrics laced with the mischief and adventure of self-discovery and coming of age.

Remembering that room in “Panicked Feathers”, Nick writes: “Outside my bedroom there was a flat roof // The garage roof where cats came through // My bedroom sat at the top // And sometimes they’d bring birds dead or dying // And sometimes they would drag them in // Over my teenage face // But who knows with cats with cats? // And I learned to climb // Outside of that window // With a friend we’d smoke outside // Dangled legs in the sun on the roof // Imagining the world was smaller than us…”

Clare Siobhan - Reignmaker - Eden Rain - teepee

Clare Siobhan - 3/2 (Loves Me).

Onstage, Clare Siobhan is a natural-born performer, and connects with her audience easily. She is eager to make every stage feel like a late-night, living-room, private concert.

The CBC recognized, award-winning singer-songwriter from Truro, Nova Scotia is now making a home for herself both in Montreal, Quebec, and in that cozy little intersection of folk, pop, and soul. Her layered harmonies paired with bright piano and ukulele lay the foundation for warm vocals that touch on connection, relationships, worry, and that age-old search for meaning and belonging that we feel as we grow.

Clare was inspired to join her poet friend who was participating in a prompt-based creative exercise to craft a song with the word of “misfit,” which became her new single “3/2 (Loves Me)”. “I was thinking about it and didn’t really want to write a misfit-themed song in the original sense of the word, so I decided to start writing something I knew: I was falling in love at the time, and it was exciting and scary and all I could think about,” she explains.

“3/2” is the constant thrumming question of new love: what if I don’t measure up to who they think I am? what if they get to know me and don’t like me anymore? And what if it doesn’t work out? 3/2 holds all these questions within it, and answers them with another question: what if it does?

Reignmaker - We Go Round (E.P).

Fast-rising Liverpool five-piece Reignmaker have just released their debut EP ‘We Go Round’  via Modern Sky UK. The release is led by soaring title-track “We Go Round”, an optimistic ode to the band’s growth as artists and as close friends. Fusing swelling indie-rock melodies with buoyant choruses and bittersweet lyricism, the new track syphons Reignmaker’s knack for creating colourful tracks that feel heady and euphoric but loaded with a sting in their tail.

Of the new track, the five-piece explain: “This song is very special to us because it’s a reflection of our journey as musicians and as friends. We poured our hearts and souls into this track. It’s a celebration of the ups and downs of life, and how we keep moving forward no matter what. From the lyrics to the driving rhythm section, “We Go Round” is a true representation of our aspiring sound and style.”

An assured introduction to the band’s spellbinding style and vision, “We Go Round” is the title-track of the band’s debut EP. A testament to the band’s tight musicianship and sonic creativity, the extended release also features the bouncing, retro rock-infused “Thirteen’s Fate” and ethereal instrumental track “Interlude”. With its arresting take on indie instrumentation, compelling vocal harmonies and earnest lyrics, the EP takes listeners on a dynamic journey that recalls the volatility of youth and its inevitable up-and-down emotions.

Having quickly risen up through the underground scene of their native Liverpool, indie quintet Reignmaker have already established their own distinctive style. Channelling youthful spirit and their charismatic scouse personalities to create a sound that radiates uplifting optimism, the band combine swelling rock’n’roll textures with soaring vocal choruses and lyrics filled with a striking poignancy.

Eden Rain - Terry And Julie.

Following up her well received debut EP Gutter Vision, Leeds born/ London based alt-pop up and comer Eden Rain offers the first glimpse into her second EP with Terry And Julie, a dazzling left-pop cut showcasing Eden’s attention grabbing vocals and her inventive turn of phrase. Inspired by Waterloo Sunset and long train journeys, the track is another stellar offering into a catalogue that is seeing Eden become a hotly tipped independent artist. Speaking on the track, Eden states:

I wrote ‘Terry and Julie’ in the first writing session I ever had with Josef (Page). I remember saying about how I liked songs that were a bit of escapism, it would be cool to write something that was about other peoples lives and less about me and whatever drama was going on in my life.  I took inspiration from one of my favourite songs ‘Waterloo Sunset’ and wrote about the Terry and Julie in it that meet at Waterloo station every Friday night.

The idea sort of snowballed quite quickly… and I reimagined it as a sort of middle aged crisis love affair where they’ve gone on to marry other people but they’re reconnected later in life and realising that they have feelings for each other ect. So yeah it’s a  summery love song anthem meets prime time BBC ONE Drama starring Surrane Jones.

Viv & Riley - Is It All Over.

The new single 'Is It All Over' from Viv & Riley (formerly Vivian Leva & Riley Calcagno) is released this week and taken from their album coming in September from Free Dirt Records. It's a gently sardonic take on the coming future of climate change and billionaires on Mars. Over soft fingerpicked guitars and a harmonies, Riley wonders if the Arctic will have a baseball field on a field of clover, and whether the mining towns on Mars will have bars or Warby Parkers. I dunno, this song just gets me every time, I think it gets at the absurdity of our current age by amplifying that weirdness into a deadly serious future. Alex Bingham of Hiss Golden Messenger produced the album and you can hear some of the Durham, NC magic on it (Viv & Riley live in Durham)!

A bittersweet nostalgia lies at the heart of Imaginary People, the new album from Viv & Riley, coming September 15, 2023 on Free Dirt Records. Over ten tracks, the pair applies an indie roots sheen to newly composed pop gems. Rooted originally in the folk tradition, the pair reframe the production into experimental territory, crafting songs that speak to finding a path forward into adulthood in an uncertain world.

Gifted songwriters and multi-instrumentalists, Vivian Leva and Riley Calcagno’s first album under the name Viv & Riley is a subtle masterpiece of thought and reflection. The album brings a reflectiveness to summertime jams that speak of uninhibited joy and creative camaraderie.

Part Bat - Daywasters (Album).

'Daywasters' is a creative collection of gorgeous songs that without exception demand a second listen just to be able to take everything in. It goes without saying that we are mightily impressed!

Part Bat, AKA Hannah Maryse Robinson was raised on 70's folk rock and the 24-hour news cycle. She writes anxious, apocalyptic Americana that you can still bop to. After years of creating bedroom music and showing it to no one, she found herself in Berlin. There she played endless bar shows and immersed herself in the city's vibrant anti-folk and psych scenes, playing bass for psychedelic acts like Soft Milk and Sour Janes. One fateful night she supported musicians Jordan Blue Peysano and Haui Boker, and the three teamed up to make their debut album Daywasters - due to be released in July 2023, Produced by Francisco Cabala (of Chicos de Nazca), Daywasters was recorded in Berlin's Reflex Magnet Studios.

Written between the turbulent years of 2017 - 2021, it is an album about making the best of a world that seems to be hurtling towards the end. Lead single Okay is a disco-tinged ode to doom scrolling and social media-induced ennui. Same Old Songs and Try Hard Blues explore Hannah's struggles with depression and rampant ADHD, with upbeat arrangements that bring light to the heavier subject matter. The softest song on the record - title track Daywasters - is also the most hopeful - a dreamy celebration of wasting time with someone great.

Since moving back to London, Hannah's put together a UK band, along with Kieran Murphy (of Cold Comforts). Together with a cohort of multi-instrumentalists, they're preparing a stage show that is part frank stream-of- consciousness confessionals, part party.

As the chorus unfolds, she delves into the secret yearnings for a deeper connection with someone who captures her heart amidst the bustling energy of a social gathering. The song encapsulates those fleeting moments when the "rosé glow" casts an enchanting spell, blurring the lines between reality and possibility.

Produced and mixed by Gabrielle Emery (EMEREE) and mastered by Darren Ziesing, the creative process behind ‘Rosé Glow’ was a collaborative effort between Sophia Petro and producer Gabrielle Emery. Together, they crafted a vibrant and catchy pop anthem that embodies the joy and anticipation of a night out. Sophia states “Gabrielle put down a vibe (the iconic guitar lick at the beginning of the track) and I pulled up my notes app on my phone and started writing down lyric ideas. We wrote up until the end of the first chorus and then I took it home and wrote the remainder of the song that very night because I was so inspired!”

Melbourne, Australian artist, Sophia Petro's musical style can be described as a fusion of folk and country with a modern pop-infused twist. Drawing inspiration from icons like Taylor Swift, Maisie Peters, and Gretta Ray, Sophia Petro uses her songwriting prowess to express her own emotions and experiences, connecting deeply with her audience through her relatable storytelling.

As an artist, Sophia Petro's journey has been shaped by her love for writing and storytelling. From an early age, she found solace in songwriting, using music to process and express her emotions. Influenced by her father, a musician, and her mother, a talented writer, Sophia Petro's artistic path was destined to intertwine with her passion for creating evocative and heartfelt music.

Arielle Silver - Bramble Vine.

Los Angeles based singer/songwriter Arielle Silver has released her new song and video for “Bramble Vine” today July 21st. Her first single in three years, the song is the first from her upcoming album Watershed, due out this fall.

Arielle Silver was inspired by the blackberries that grew outside her childhood home for the song. “One day I was making pie and thinking about complicated relationships,” says Silver, “and the way that some kinds of love are complicated, but worth the work.” An earthy, scenic singer-songwriter ballad in 6/8, “Bramble Vine” is grounded in acoustic guitar and tender piano, and exemplifies Silver’s literary approach to songwriting, or in her words - “literate folk pop.”

Silver serves as the President of FAR-West - Folk Alliance Region West, where she fosters and promotes the work of artists, songwriters, producers and more across traditional, contemporary, and multicultural folk music, dance, storytelling, and performing arts. She additionally serves as a team member for the SONA Foundation, a charitable organization that advocates on behalf of songwriters and music creators.

“Bramble Vine” follows Silver’s 2021 acclaimed album A Thousand Tiny Torches. With support from Americana UK, American Songwriter, and more, A Thousand Tiny Torches was produced and recorded with singer-songwriter Shane Alexander, whose partnership with Silver continued throughout the recording and production of Watershed.

T.R. Burge - Selling You (E.P).

Following on from the release of his highly-praised debut EP ‘God Ache’ last year, emerging Manchester-based singer-songwriter T.R. Burge has now returned with his new EP ‘Selling You’ released today 21st July 2023. This is a notable collection of songs, with distinct vocals and some beautifully creative material that really does stand out as something special.

Talking about the EP T.R. Burge has this to say, “The EP was based on the idea of having no pressure at all but getting together at the producer Robbie Moore’s new Idea Farm/Studio he is building in rural Sweden and seeing what came out. This is the first ever project that was recorded there and we were based in a beautiful old wooden outbuilding set within incredible countryside in Sweden. We started the recording on January 2nd and it was such a great way to start the year.”

“At points the snow was coming down outside and there was also plenty of rain, I love both rain and snow. It was a wonderful creative process and we had dinner in the evenings with Robbie’s family and children, slept deeply afterwards and got up and repeated the next day. My friend Liam from Manchester also came with me and took photos and we just all hung out. It was great. A drummer I have recorded with before called Tobias also came in from Berlin and played some awesome parts. It was bacon sarnies in the morning and easy and peaceful creative days,” he continued.

Hector Gannet - Emmanuel Head.

After recently returning to deliver their highly-praised sophomore LP ‘The Land Belongs To Us’, emerging outfit Hector Gannet are now looking to follow up their latest full-length with the new three-track collection ‘Emmanuel Head’.

Featuring the opening song of their recent full-length and title-track of EP, ‘Emmanuel Head’, as well as two live renditions of ‘Last Of The Buffalo’ and ‘Waiting For The Whistle’, this new outing looks to add to what has already been an incredibly accomplished year for the outfit. With ‘Waiting For The Whistle’ recorded during their support slot for Sam Fender’s recent St. James Park show, this new release marks a seminal moment in their career so far.

Hector Gannet, from North Shields on Tyneside, are masters of a kind of new, modernist folk music, taking their name from an ill-fated trawler which sank in the North Sea under heroic circumstances in 1967. Hector Gannet’s musical incarnation began to draw attention when they wrote and performed music to accompany vintage footage of the North East heritage of shipbuilding and fishing as part of a project for the BFI in 2017.  The band have toured widely, including a UK tour with Sam Fender and dates in England and Scotland with indie legends Sea Power, two North American adventures and, more recently, supporting Sam Fender (again) at St James’ Park football stadium.

Hector Gannet’s second album ‘The Land Belongs To Us’ was released to acclaim in early 2023. MOJO awarded four stars: “Pointedly political, natural-world-advocating folk rock.” Uncut proclaimed “North Shields’ answer to Crazy Horse.”

Emmanuel Head (taken from the current album) is a song inspired by escaping to a place of personal significance, in this case, for Hector Gannet, a white pyramid day marker on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne on the north east coast of England, but as Aaron Duff (aka Hector Gannet) explains “The song is as much about our connection with each other as it is about any personal fondness for a particular place. It’s about getting away from it all, to where we are without distraction and where, for a while, the land belongs to us.”

Dark and Twisties - McCabe - Ant Thomaz

Dark and Twisties - Grace and Dignity. Swansea Alt-Folk Band Dark And Twisties released a brand new single 'Grace And Dignity' just...
