Comments: I had great pleasure in travelling up to Manchester, England, on the 29th June 2008, to see Radiohead perform at the 'Old Trafford Cricket Ground' an excellent venue for a truly remarkable concert.

Support band(s) 'Bats For Lashes' and on this specific tour occasion 'MGMT' were highly enjoyable.

Radiohead were in a league of their own, and worth every penny of the 300 miles round trip, hotel bills, and my son who seemed to have sealed pockets, every time someone asked for money.

Hey Ho that's the generation gap for you. This concert is on a par with the Manchester gig, and with personal memories, comes with mega recommendations.

Moby - Live In Australia 2005

A man of many musical talents, this is Moby performing on tour in 2005.

In fact I was surprised just how many different projects he has been involved in, and if you are curious yourself, check his Wikipedia entry HERE.

Moby undertook a number of festival gigs in 2005, and clearly by his comments, this was one of his favourites.

With a new album to promote that year the concert still included many of the audiences favorites as you will note from the set list below.

This then is Moby live on the 24th July 2005, at Byron Bay in Australia.

Set list recorded is:

01 - Find My Baby (4:04)
02 - Raining Again (3:53)
03 - Natural Blues (4:52)
04 - Go (4:15)
05 - Beautiful (3:33)
06 - Porcelain (4:23)
07 - We Are All Made Of Stars (3:48)

Kraftwerk - Tokyo 1981

This is the second concert from Kraftwerk during their 1981 tour, to be featured on Beehive Candy.

The tour itself, was more or less divided into two parts.

The first tour started May 19th, 1981 at Apollo Teatro, Firenze in Italy and kept going until they had played in Bombay, India on September 25th.

Then they went back to Europe and enjoyed a small break until November 19th when they started a smaller tour with concerts mostly in Germany.

The last concert was held in the venue Zeppelin in Bremen, on December 14th. During the year 1981 Kraftwerk performed on more than 80 occasions in 16 countries.

This recording is from their performance in Tokyo, Japan at the Nakano Sun Plaza on the 7th September 1981.

It has been circulated I understand, as "Virtu ex Machina", and the set list (edited, however a large part of the show nonetheless) is as follows:

01 - Beethoven (Intro)
02 - Nummern
03 - Komputerwelt
04 - Komputerliebe
05 - Heimkomputer
06 - Neonlicht
08 - Schaufensterpuppen
09 - Trans Europa Express
10 - Die Roboter
11 - It's more fun to compute

The sound quality is extremely good (stereo soundboard or high quality FM)

Coldplay - Isle Of Wight 2006

Coldplay are one of those bands that seem to be loved or loathed with equal passion.

Perhaps the fact that the safe playing world of mainstream music radio, and it's need to rotate some of their early hits with annoying regularity has never helped, and of course the 'celebrity' interest also 'grates'.

That said musically they remain a highly distinct sounding band, and lets face it the music blogs are currently awash with articles on the release of the new album 'Viva La Vida'.

So for those of you, who like a little Coldplay, here is a copy of their 2006 appearance at the Isle Of Wight festival in England.

Set list:

1. Square One
2. Politik
3. Yellow
4. Speed Of Sound
5. What If
6. God Put A Smile Upon Your Face
7. Don't Panic
8. White Shadows
9. The Scientist
10. Til Kingdom Come
11. Perfect Day (Lou Reed Cover)
12. Clocks
13. Talk
14. Swallowed In The Sea
15. In My Place
16. Fix You
(plus intro & outro radio chatter)

The quality is quite good - sourced as I understand, from the UK's Virgin Radio DAB output, so not as clean as stereo FM, but highly listenable.

Replacement link in downloads (21st November 2010).

Whats Up Doc - Number Eleven - June 2008

A summer feel to much of this edition of Whats Up Doc, and why not, it is after all summer here, and we have had some sunny days of late!

In absolutely no order at all here are a few songs that meet the summer criteria for me.

This Is Ivy League have gained a lot of attention of late, with some drawing comparisons with Belle and Sebastian, others even say Simon and Garfunkel.

Links Removed - MP3 Policy.

This Is Ivy League - 01 - The Richest Kids In Town.mp3
This Is Ivy League - 07 - A Summer Chill.mp3
This Is Ivy League - 01 - The Richest Kids In Town.mp3

They are in my humble opinion worthy of further investigation, hopefully the above 'tasters' will have a similar effect on you.

More HERE at their My Space site, where you can also order the album.

Santogold (aka Santi White) is different, hard to categorise her, however very accessible.. oh just have a listen..

Santogold - Lights Out.mp3

MySpace has more HERE.

From Canada (home of so many good artist's!) this is Feist and she is a little bit of Folk and Indie and alternative and... very very listenable.

Feist - 1234 ( My! gay! husband! - get up kid edit).mp3

More HERE at the official site, or if you prefer her MySpace page HERE.

Jeremy Schonfeld has been likened to Billy Joel among others, there is certainly something of a 'moody New York' feel to his music, kind of late night maybe, windows open, traffic noise in the background..

The Rolling Stones - Honolulu 1966

The Rolling Stones 1966 American Tour was the last concert tour by the Stones with Brian Jones in the United States.

The band had played 29 concerts in just over a month arriving in Honolulu to conclude the tour.

Back in England, one politician announces "Our relationship with the United States runs the risk of getting considerably worse as soon as The Rolling Stones arrive in America... Americans will believe that English young people have attained a new degree of degeneration and that this country is being recklessly ruined."

Having released 'Aftermath' in the spring of 1966, the first Stones album with all Jagger - Richards compositions, not surprisingly the tour featured a number of songs from the album.

This then is The Rolling Stones on the 28th July 1966, live in concert in Honolulu, USA, from a recording circulated as 'So Much Younger Than Today' by The Swingin' Pig (TSP 012).

Set list is:

1. Intro / Not Fade Away
2. The Last Time
3. Paint It Black
4. Lady Jane
5. Mother's Little Helper

Paul McCartney - Liverpool 1st June 2008

This one could well be on a couple of Beatles fans music blogs already, but having listened, it is well worth sharing here on Beehive Candy.

Paul McCartney performed live in Liverpool
on Sunday (1st June 2008), as part of Liverpool's 'year of culture' events.

The Liverpool 08 website summed up the concert as follows:

'Anfield football ground witnessed one of the greatest nights in its history on 1 June 2008 - with a stunning concert by Sir Paul McCartney to celebrate the city's year as European Capital of Culture.

Brilliantly supported by The Kaiser Chiefs and The Zutons, the ex-Beatle - who last played in Liverpool exactly five years ago - gave a magical show with a blockbuster set of hits from his Fab Four, Wings and solo career that had the sold-out stadium on its feet for a full two hours.

With touching tributes to George Harrison - on 'Blackbird' and 'Something' - and Linda, mingled with raucous renditions of 'Hey Jude' and 'Live and Let Die' the audience knew they were witnessing McCartney at the very top of his game.

Special guest Dave Grohl - of the Foo Fighters - joined on drums and vocals to take the show into rock 'n roll overdrive which, after an encore that memorably featured 'A Day in the Life' and Lennon's anthemic 'Give Peace a Chance', sadly but spectacularly ended with an amazing firework display'.

OK no firework display here, but the concert was broadcast on BBC Radio Merseyside, from which this copy comes.

Set list is:

1. Hippy, Hippy Shake
2. Jet
3. Drive My Car
4. Flaming Pie
5. Got To Get You Into My Life
6. Let Me Roll It
7. My Love
8. C' Moon
9. Long And Winding Road
10. Dance Tonight
11. Blackbird
12. Calico Skies
13. In Liverpool
14. Follow The Sun
15. Eleanor Rigby
16. Something
17. Penny Lane
18. Band On The Run (with Dave Grohl on guitar)
19. Back In The USSR (with Dave Grohl on drums)

22. Hey Jude

The Killers - Live In Santiago 2007

Time for something more recent, in this case The Killers, live in Santiago, Chile last year.

The Killers are of course an American rock band from Las Vegas, Nevada, who it may be fair to say have combined music styles from the 1980s and 1990s with modern synthetic music.

Formed in 2002 and made up of Brandon Flowers (vocals, keyboards), Dave Keuning (guitar, vocals), Mark Stoermer (bass guitar, vocals) and Ronnie Vannucci Jr., (drums, percussion), they released their debut album, Hot Fuss, in 2004.

Their second album, Sam's Town, was released in 2006.

The compilation album Sawdust, containing B-sides, rarities, and some new material, was released in 2007.

Their first two albums to date have sold in excess of 12 million copies worldwide combined.

OK that's enough 'stuff' courtesy of good old 'Wiki', so hopefully it's predominately accurate, if accurate is your bag.

This is the band live at the Fenix festival Arena, Santiago, Chile, on the 4th November 2007.

Set list is:

01 - Intro
02 - Sam's Town

22 - Exitlude
23 - Outro When You Were Young

This is from a Radio Broadcast, by Radio Horizonte 103.3 FM in Chile, thankfully with virtually no DJ talk and station ID's, and sound quality is good at 160kbps FM Stereo.

Grand Funk Railroad - Live in LA - 1974

This is Grand Funk Railroad live at The Forum, Los Angeles, USA, on the 2nd June 1974.

The Grand Funk Railroad lineup was highly popular during the 1970s, having sold over 25 million records and selling out arenas worldwide.

The band were awarded four RIAA gold albums in 1970, the most for any American Group that year.

The current Grand Funk Railroad lineup uses the nickname 'The American Band', from their hit song 'We're an American Band'.

A popular take on the band during their heyday was that the critics hated them, but audiences loved them.

Any how for some good old seventies, foot stomping stadium rock (complete with self indulgent but thankfully not too long drum solo), this concert fits the bill.

The set list was:

01 - Footstomping Music
02 - Rock-N-Roll Soul
03 - Heartbreaker
04 - Shinin' On
05 - The Loco-Motion
06 - We're An American Band
07 - T.N.U.C.
08 - Inside Looking Out

The sound quality is excellent stereo soundboard, so turn it up loud (number 11 on Spinal Tap amps).

Johnny Cash - Live in Amsterdam 1972

By the early 1970s, Johnny Cash had established his public image as 'The Man in Black'.

He regularly performed dressed all in black, wearing a long black knee-length coat.

This outfit stood in contrast to the costumes worn by most of the major country acts in his day, that is rhinestone suit and cowboy boots.

In 1971, Cash wrote the song 'Man in Black' to help explain his dress code, "We're doing mighty fine I do suppose/In our streak of lightning cars and fancy clothes/But just so we're reminded of the ones who are held back/Up front there ought to be a man in black."

He and his band had initially worn black shirts because that was the only matching color they had among their various outfits, and he claimed to like wearing black both on and off stage.

From the 'Man in Black' era this is Johnny Cash live at The Nieuwe RAI, Amsterdam, Holland, on the 26th February 1972.

Set list is:

1. I Walk the Line intro / A boy Named Sue.
2. Ramblin' Around / Sunday Morning Coming Down.
3. Man in Black.
4. I Still Miss Someone.
5. Five Feet High and Rising.
6. Pickin' Time / Detroit City.

Emmylou Harris and the Hot Band - Washington DC 1976

This is Emmylou Harris and the Hot Band at the opening night of the Warner Theater, Washington DC, USA on the 28th March 1976.

'Elite Hotel', released in December 1975, established that the buzz created by the previous album 'Pieces of the Sky' was well-founded.

Unusual for country albums at the time, which largely revolved around a hit single, Emmylou's' albums borrowed their approach from the album-oriented rock market, in terms of quality and artistic merit.

Tracks like "Sin City", "Wheels", and "Till I Gain Control Again", which weren't singles, easily stood against tracks like "Together Again", "Sweet Dreams", and "One of These Days", which were.

While 'Elite Hotel' was a number 1 country album, the album did sufficiently well with the rock audience. 'Elite Hotel' won a Grammy in 1976 for Best Country Vocal Performance, Female.

Legendary DC Concert Promoter Mike Schreibman was responsible for the reopening of the Warner Theater in downtown DC.

This Emmylou Show was the first show in the revamped 2000-seat acoustically-perfect vaudeville house.

The concert was broadcast on WHFS-FM 102.3 -Homegrown Radio, from back in those 'sorely missed days' - no playlists, knowledgeable DJs, and support for homegrown artists like Emmylou, who here returns triumphant.

These are the notes from 'Richard F' who recorded the show. ' I taped the show off the radio, and the cassette has held up remarkably well. I did miss taping the opening number and most of "San Antone Rose" as well as "Till I Can Gain Control Again" and most of "Jambalaya" during the tape flip. Thanks to Deborah N, I received all missing tracks except for "Till I Can Gain Control Again" from her source. Dave T then located the elusive missing track'.

The show has been edited together and sensitively mastered.

Set list is:

01 Intro
02 Cash on the Barrelhead
03 San Antonio Rose
04 Coat of Many Colors
05 Feeling Single, Seeing Double
06 If I Could only Win Your Love
07 Too Far Gone
08 Amarillo
09 Tonight the Bottle Let me Down
10 Tulsa Queen
11 Bluebird Wine
12 Band intros
13 Wheels
14 Till I Can Gain Control Again
15 Jambalaya
16 Ooh Las Vegas
17 Satan's Jewel Crown *
18 Forty Days
19 Outro

The band line up was:

The Hot Band:
Glen D, Hardin, piano
Rodney Crowell, rhythm guitar, harmony vocals
Emory Gordy Bass, banjo, high harmony
John Ware, drums
Hank De Vito, pedal steel, Dobro
Albert Lee, lead guitar

* Guests:
Fayssoux Starling, vocal
John Starling, vocal, acoustic guitar
Mike Auldridge, Dobro

Sound quality is predominately very good (FM stereo radio sourced).

Third World - Amsterdam 1979

Third World are a Jamaican reggae band formed in 1973.

Third World's greatest success came in the late 1970s and early 1980s, peaking with their cover version of The O'Jays 'Now That We Found Love', a hit single on both sides of the Atlantic in 1979.

Their music may be a little too commercial for some reggae purists, however as their website states 'the band was born out of a drive to write and perform original material incorporating reggae, rock and funk, and a desire to tour and
take music to a wider audience'.

From the peak of their success this is Third World live in Jaap Edenhal, Amsterdam, on the 9th June 1979.

Set list is:

1.One cold vibe.
2.Rhythm of life.
3.Cold sweat.
4.Thirld World Man.
5.1865 (96 Degrees in the shade).
6.Cool meditation.
7.Now that we found love.
8.Talk to me.

Sound quality is very good (from a FM stereo recording).

Uncle Tupelo - Beloit, WI, USA 1992

Although Uncle Tupelo broke up before they achieved significant commercial success, as mentioned on the recent Wilco concert posting, the band are renowned for their impact on the alternative country music scene.

The group's first album, No Depression, became a byword for the genre and was widely influential.

Uncle Tupelo's sound was unlike popular country music of the time, drawing inspiration from styles as diverse as the hardcore punk of The Minutemen and the country instrumentation and harmony of the Carter Family and Hank Williams.

Farrar and Tweedy lyrics frequently referenced Middle America and the working class of home town Belleville.

What was very surprising, though, is that, unlike the band's previous country-meets-punk releases, 'No Depression' and 'Still Feel Gone', the third album was performed almost exclusively on acoustic instruments.

It's a testament to the group's courage and integrity that, in a time when Nirvana's ''Smells Like Teen Spirit'' had made the world safe for grunge rock, their third album 'March 16-20, 1992' was nothing of the sort, with the band taking an alternative route.

This concert after the release of the third album is fittingly an acoustic set.

Recorded at a folk festival on the 11th September 1992, at Beliot College, Beliot WI, in the USA, this is a soundboard recording.

The concert includes the first known version of 'Motion Pictures' by Neil Young.

Set list is:

01 Satan Your Kingdom Must Come Down (fades in)
02 True to Life
03 No Depression
04 Watch Me Fall
05 Shaky Ground
06 Atomic Power
07 Whiskey Bottle
08 Wait Up
09 Wipe the Clock
10 I Wish My Baby Was Born
11 Do Re Mi
12 Life Worth Livin'
13 I Wanna Be Your Dog
14 Still Be Around
15 Warfare
16 Moonshiner (fades in)

Girlschool - Cologne - Germany 1991

When featuring the Go Go's recently, I came across the fact that Kathy Valentine had for a short while been a member of Girlschool.

A small piece of trivia, that gives a tenuous link to sharing a Girlschool concert.

The make you feel old fact, is that Girlschool have been around for thirty years, as of this year.

This is only part of a concert from 1991, the band have released three official live albums, more details on their website's discography HERE.

Performing at Music Hall, Cologne, Germany during December 1991, this is brimming with their usual live energy.

The setlist for this recording is:

1. Uh, All Night
2. Screamin' Blue Murder
3. Demolition Boys
4. C'mon Let's Go
5. Emergency
6. Tush
7. Play With Fire

This is from a stereo FM recording of very good quality.

Their music is firmly rooted in the sound of the American South, but never confined by its conventions. Well so say their website and I tend to agree!
