Foo Fighters - Reading Festival 2002.

The Foo Fighters are another one of those bands that have been around for a lot longer than it seems (for me anyway). Formed in 1995 by Dave Grohl originally as a one-man project after the dissolution of his previous band, Nirvana the Foo Fighters have of course gone on to stadium filling, Grammy award winning super group status.

What would have been if Dave Grohl had accepted a permanent position as the drummer in Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers back in 1994 (he very nearly did). This is The Foo Fighters live at the Reading Festival (England) back on the 24th August 2002, and the recording comes with an additional four songs performed by the band on BBC TV's 'Later With Jools Holland' from November 2002.

Andrew Bird - With Bowl Of Fire Live 1998

I have to admit I was about ten years late in 'discovering' Andrew Bird. It was only a couple of years ago that I first gave his music a listen and I have been kicking myself ever since (OK not literally), however the back catalogue has been fun to say the least.

Back in the late 90's the music was quite different to today's indie rock and folk direction, with an element of old time swing and harmonies.

Taking on the role of bandleader, Andrew Bird released Thrills on Rykodisc in 1997 with his group Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire, shortly followed by second album Oh! The Grandeur in 1998. Both albums were heavily influenced by traditional folk, pre-war jazz, and swing, with Andrew Bird relying on the violin as his primary musical instrument, as well as providing vocals along with his trademark verbose lyrics. The Bowl of Fire featured musicians from Andrew Bird's home town of Chicago, including Kevin O'Donnell, Nora O'Connor, Andy Hopkins, Jimmy Sutton, Colin Bunn, and Ryan Hembrey. During this period Andrew Bird was also a member of the jazz group Kevin O'Donnells Quality Six, for which he was the lead singer and violinist.

This is Andrew Bird's Bowl Of Fire live in January and May 1998 with material recorded at two venues in Madison, Wisconsin, and Chicago, Illinois.

Tracks 1 to 8 were performed at Mad City Live, in Madison, WI, and Tracks 9 to 14 are from a performance at the Mercury Theater, Chicago, IL. As regards dates the Mad City gig was 1st January 1998. The latter is unknown however informed opinion says that May 1998 is most likely correct for the Mercury Theatre.

Sam and Dave - Sweden 1967.

This is a wonderful four song set from 'Soul Men' Sam and Dave. Although this is hardly an exclusive to Beehive Candy it is a must have for any soul music fan and worthy of a share. The audio quality is incredible considering the age of the recording.

The following from wikipedia puts the whole show in context: Sam & Dave's live act earned them the nickname "Double Dynamite". Phil Walden, Otis Redding's manager, said "I think Sam and Dave will probably stand the test of time as being the best live act that there ever was.

Those guys were absolutely unbelievable. Every night they were awesome." An October 1968 Time article reads: "Of all the R & B cats, nobody steams up a place like Sam & Dave ... weaving and dancing (while singing!), they gyrate through enough acrobatics to wear out more than 100 costumes per year." Jerri Hershey described in Nowhere to Run: They carried red suits, white suits, three piece lime green suits, all with matching patent boots and coordinated silk hankies woefully inadequate to absorb a soul man's nightly outpourings. Both Sam & Dave talk a lot about sweat. To Dave, its proof that he's worked for his pay. For Sam its essential, almost mystical. He says he can't work without it. "Unless my body reaches a certain temperature, starts to liquify, I just don't feel right without it." Wayne Jackson said Sam & Dave left puddles of sweat onstage by the end of a performance.

In March 1967, Sam and Dave were co-headliners for the Stax/Volt Revue in Europe, which included Booker T & the MGs, The Mar-Keys, Eddie Floyd, Carla Thomas, Arthur Conley and headliner Otis Redding. For Sam & Dave, it was their first time in Europe, largely to all-white audiences, sometimes up to 2,000 people. Although Redding headlined the tour, many agreed Sam & Dave stole the show on many nights. According to Redding's and Sam & Dave's manager Phil Walden, Redding refused to be booked on the same bill with Sam & Dave again, not wanting to have to follow their explosive act. A live version of Sam and Dave's Double Dynamite LP track "Soothe Me" was recorded in Paris during the '67 tour. Released as a single in mid-1967, it continued Sam & Dave's string of top 20 U.S. R&B hits and was their first in the UK Top 40.

When Sam & Dave arrived at Stax, they worked with producer & engineer Jim Stewart and songwriters including the MGs' guitarist Steve Cropper, who wrote or co-wrote four of their first eight recordings. The duo then moved to relative newcomer writers and producers Isaac Hayes and David Porter. Hayes and Porter wrote and produced the duo's biggest hits (although they did not receive production credits until the Soul Men LP and singles). According to Moore and Prater, they also greatly influenced the duo's singing style, and had them shift their recording style from the style of their Roulette records to a more live, more energetic gospel, call-and-response feel and beat driven soul style the group is known for today.

Sam & Dave's Stax records also benefited from the musicians and engineering at Stax. The Stax house band, Booker T. & the M.G.'s, and the Stax horn section, the Mar-Keys had world-class musicians who co-wrote (often without credit) and contributed to recordings—the same musicians who recorded with Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Carla Thomas and other soul artists. Sam & Dave's Stax recordings through 1967 were engineered by Stax founder Jim Stewart, who created the Memphis Sound by recording live in a single take. Stewart is credited for instrumental mixes that allowed for instrumental separation and the distinct contribution of each instrument to the overall feel of the song. Hayes and Porter are in the Songwriters Hall of Fame, The Mar-Keys are in the Musicians Hall of Fame, and Booker T. & the MG's, Jim Stewart, Isaac Hayes and Sam & Dave are all in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Renaissance - Live In Cincinnati 1970.

This is the original line up of Renaissance live in concert at Ludlow Garage, Cincinnati, USA, on the 25th February 1970.

The band were formed in January 1969 by former Yardbirds members Keith Relf and Jim McCarty . In February 1970, they embarked on a North American tour, but this month-long trek proved a mitigated success, as because of their Yardbirds credentials they found themselves paired with bands like The Kinks and their new classically-oriented direction didn't always go down well with audiences.

Line up changes started not long after this tour and eventually left only Jane Relf and John Hawken from the original line up.

There are however some strong musical parallels that can be heard in this set that clearly continued to develop within the second incarnation of the band that would see Annie Haslam take over on vocals by 1971.

I came across this recording by chance, however unfortunately there were not any details to accompany the recording apart from the line up and track listing. I have put soundboard as the audio is in my opinion to clear for audience and unlikely to have been FM with all the stops and gaps in the performance.

2010FM - January Magazine Three

We start off our third round up of new and nearly new music for January with the superb Swedish indie band Sambassadeur.

With two albums behind them, the indie pop artists have transformed their sound with the third album European (Due out Feb 23rd on Labrador Records).

Receiving a considerable amount of praise in the past through their 'DIY' approach, Sambassadeur are able to express further growth on their latest release. With the help of producer Mattias Glavå, European maintains the bands personal style, with the addition of a classic and orchestrated sound.

OK regulars to Beehive Candy know our of love for the Swedish music scene and in our opinion these folk are another fine example of why we get rather carried away as soon as you mention Sweden & music in the same breath.
