Spiral Stairs - Beatrix Players - Broke Royals - Gumshen - Sheepy

Spiral Stairs - Emoshuns.

Background - Spiral Stairs (Pavement's Scott Kannberg) releasesd his second album under that name, Doris and the Daggers, a couple of days ago, on the Nine Mile label in the US,  on Domino in Europe (digital / physical) and on Coolin' By Sound in Australia / New Zealand. He has also shared the official music video for "Emoshuns," directed by Joe Salinas, and also announced a full North American tour. The album features guest appearances from Matt Berninger of The National, Broken Social Scene's Kevin Drew and Justin Peroff, Kelley Stoltz and Shudder To Think's Adam Wade.

You can’t hurry genius – not even the genial, unforced and unpretentious genius that has long been Scott’s forte. What’s for sure is his second album as Spiral Stairs, Doris And The Daggers, is worth the wait. It’s some of the best music Scott’s been involved with, and also some of the most personal and emotional music he’s ever written, reflecting the life changes that occurred over those eight years. During that stretch, Scott weathered the loss of friends, treasured the joys of fatherhood, lived life as an Australian and even ate haggis meat – experiences that inform these warm, sweetly melodic and soundly honest songs. Website here, Bandcamp here. Tour details on Beehive Candy's tour page.

'Emoshuns' is the third song we have been able to share from the brand new album 'Doris and the Daggers' and I have to say it's definitely my favourite of the three, helped a little by the video, but even more by the lyrics and their stylish delivery.

Beatrix Players - Rushlight.

Background - All-female trio Beatrix Players have released the new video for track Rushlight taken from upcoming their debut album Magnified (March 31st); through their enchantingly dark and evocative melodies, expansive arrangements and empowerd orchestral sound, Beatrix Players tells stories of real life and fantasy.

Beatrix Players are a London-based all-female trio who make florid, adventurous music that operates at the interface between folk, singer-songwriter acoustica, prog and quasi-classical baroque chamber pop. There is a light, translucent quality to the music, and yet when it is not being hushed and reverent, it has the attack and thrust, the surging dynamism, of rock. It can be soft and intimate, but it can also be fiery and intense, epic and immense. There are tempestuous passages in their music that you can imagine being delivered by traditional rock instrumentation but it is the very absence of guitars and drums that means that there is nobody out there quite like Beatrix Players.

Citing influences as diverse as Michael Nyman and Regina Spektor and drawing comparisons to the likes of Kate Bush and Einaudi Ludovico. In 2015 the band (Amy Birks, Jess Kennedy and Amanda Alvarez) took their unique sound – a beautiful combination of vocals, piano and cello – into the studio to record their self-produced debut album, which has been mixed by two-time BBC Folk Award winner, Jim Moray. Website here.

And it's third time around on Beehive Candy for Beatrix Players and the stunning video for 'Rushlight'. Another fine song from a consistently pleasing album where their exquisite vocals are backed with tender affection by both piano and cello.

Broke Royals - Higher.

Background - Broke Royals are excited to share “Higher,” the first single from their debut self-titled album Broke Royals. Named one of the best up-and-coming DC bands of 2016 by CBS, Broke Royals seamlessly integrate traditional rock with infectious pop hooks and electronic elements to create a richly layered sound that has been praised as “the new American rock.”

Broke Royals wrote "Higher" as an anthem for anyone whose heart has ever gotten ahead of itself. The track tells the story of a man swept up in his idea of love, full of bold promises and big ideas but slightly disconnected from the reality of love and relationships. "Higher" was exclusively premiered yesterday with Pure Volume, who wrote, "the duo is unafraid to soar and experiment with their sound. It's reflected with the build and memorable chorus."

Behind Broke Royals is the team of producer Colin Cross and vocalist Philip Basnight, who have accomplished much since forming in 2014. In just three years they’ve honed a singular sound across three EPs, toured the country opening for the likes of Car Seat Headrest, Real Estate, and Andrew McMahon and even unintentionally fueled a political revolution. In May of 2014, the band's debut single "About Time" went viral in Thailand as the country was in the midst of a military coup, inspiring those who were hearing the track through political ears.

Debut album Broke Royals is a culmination of the duo's journey so far.  For fans of the sophisticated pop rock sound of Future Islands, The 1975, or Bastille, Broke Royals are a band that should be on your radar. Website here, Facebook here.

Some lively alt rock comes along in the shape of 'Higher'. A brisk beat and bright vocals are accompanied by a guitar lead soundtrack that comfortably switches power and pace in this polished introduction to Broke Royals.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gumshen - Fallacy.

Background - About "Fallacy" from the band: "The glowing lights on the lead singers chest represent a heart, the organ of the body that provides the engine that sustains life.  The song was written about the arrival of death and the feeling fear and disappointment that one may not have become what they'd hope they would have. That we lie to ourselves that we are worth a damn and then the cold truth reveals that lie. The song was composed entirely by Ron Hippe and what he is trying to express in this music is to communicate a strong and real emotion of regret, defeat and reflection.

We don't know who should be listening to this music other than people who can relate to the deep emotional chasms that we navigate.  Anyone who thinks about the big questions unanswered in a human beings existence. Clearly it is not party music and apparently creepy (feedback from some younger audience) so I guess most people will be unimpressed especially party kids who would rather not be interrupted from their daily lives occupied by smartphones.

We have our own studio called DigiPhobe and we record all the sounds there. Then I mix it but for the upcoming CD release, the final 10% of mixing is being done in Michael Moscozzi's studio, here in Seattle, to give it the most as professional sound as possible. The guest drummer on this song is Greg Gilmore who is well respected in Seattle music circles.

The video was recorded at the Market Theatre in historic Pike Place Market.  It is the location of Seattle's longest running show called Theatre Sports presented by Seattle's leading improv comedy theatre Unexpected Productions. Dennis (our drummer) is playing in the video even though Greg played drums." Website here, Facebook here.

With something of a casual pace 'Fallacy' starts to stand out through the vocals and a simple melodic feel. It's one of those songs that takes a little time to develop, however the desire to play it again is well established at midpoint.

Sheepy - Home.

Background - Liverpool pop-punk scoundrels Sheepy have just unveiled the second video from their new album ‘Alarm Bells’ out April 7th. Sheepy are Liverpool schoolfriends Luke Jones (guitar/vox) and Ollie Phillips (drums) aided and abetted by Irishman Villy Raze (bass). To say songwriter Luke was prolific would be an understatement, as his abundant ability to pen short, sharp catchy punk pop in about the time it would take most people to flick through the newspaper on their daily commute is quite incredible. There are in fact plans to enter the World Guiness Book Of Records soon to celebrate the band’s hyper speed pop-writing and recording skills!

Of new single ‘Home’ from the album, singer Luke Jones says “This song is actually about when I was younger and didn't feel like I could stay in Liverpool any longer, itchy feet. It doesn't matter where you are from and I'd hear lots of people talking about where certain of their ancestors were from and on St. Patricks day where everyone "becomes" Irish for the day. Or they were born somewhere but moved when they were 3 months old. Everyone can be where they say they're from, but it comes across that they are just trying to make themselves more interesting when they don't need to.”

Originally discovered by London label Blang playing at a pirate radio festival in Mayo, Ireland. Songwriter Luke had by then already recorded ten solo albums at home. He gave four copies to the label who signed him immediately. Since then he has: made another six home demo albums, formed the band, played around the UK, Ireland and Europe, released one album, five singles and an EP, been played on 6Music by Steve Lamacq (who played ‘Another Day’ single seven times), Tom Robinson and Gideon Coe and on Absolute by Frank Skinner and Dave Gorman. He’s also had two singles used on Sky Sports Soccer AM to soundtrack goal compilations and recorded Sheepy’s second album proper which is soon to be released in April 2017 entitled ‘Alarm Bells’, where it was recorded in Brixton with Jon Clayton (Jim Bob, Monochrome Set, Band Of Holy Joy, Chris T-T). Website here, Facebook here, tour details on Beehive Candy's tour page.

I have to say sometimes music promoters do there work of conjuring up interest with a few well chosen words. Describing Sheepy as "Liverpool pop-punk scoundrels" painted some colourful images in my mind and thankfully both the band and the song 'Home' do the rest of the work just right, and lived up to expectations!

Those Lavender Whales - Kacey Johansing - 23rd Hour - The Weeks - Heavy Suns

Those Lavender Whales - Lose My Mind.

Background - Columbia, South Carolina indie/psych pop band Those Lavender Whales, are releasing their sophomore record ‘My Bones Are Singing’ via SC label Fork & Spoon 4/7/2016. Written around singer Aaron Graves’ struggle with a rare, life threatening brain tumor in 2014, the tracks on My Bones Are Singing are existential, intricate pop songs that highlight spirituality, growth, family, and hope.

Throughout the record, in the darkest spots and the brightest moments, though, Graves sticks to the central motif of his oeuvre as Those Lavender Whales, which he started in his college dorm room at the turn of the millennium: striving to be a better person. “I know it really hurts to grow,” Graves concedes on “Open Up,” before offering, “I know you’re taking us through rougher weather.”

My Bones Are Singing marks a considerable growth for Those Lavender Whales, too. Recorded with Chaz Bundick (Toro Y Moi) in Berkeley, California, and at Graves’s home in Columbia, South Carolina, My Bones Are Singing is full of bigger sounds and a broader palette that parallels the way this band’s world expanded suddenly in a period of rough weather with huge amounts of uncertainty and love. The personal songwriting, thoughtful arrangements and delightful quirkiness that Graves established on a handful of EPs and 2012’s Tomahawk of Praise remain, but Bundick’s production gives My Bones Are Singing an airiness imbued by stacks of vintage synthesizers and crisp production.

Indeed, Those Lavender Whales has grown physically as well, not into simply a fleshed-out band, but a full-fledged family. Jessica Bornick, Graves’s wife, plays drums. Multi-instrumentalists Christopher Gardner and Patrick Wall, two of Graves’s longtime friends, round out the band. Facebook here, Bandcamp here.

'Lose My Mind' mixes fuzzy psychedelic sounds, alongside steady rhythmic vocals that seem to rotate around the music creating a hypnotic feel  throughout.

Kacey Johansing - Do You Want Me.

Background - Kacey Johansing announces new album, The Hiding, shares first single "Do You Want Me". “It seems great opportunities come in blessings as well as tragedies,” Kacey Johansing sings on the title track of her third album, The Hiding. After the breakup of her band Yesway, and an abrupt falling out with her closest musical collaborator, Johansing set out to record a new batch of songs that resulted from the sea change in which she had now found herself.

Instead of drawing from her regular band, Johansing pulled from a wider cast of players that she’d come to know in the community of musicians throughout California and the West Coast. The resulting sound is one based wholly and unabashedly in pop. Nods to Christine McVie and Fleetwood Mac can be heard, but Johansing brings these sounds to a modern stage, blending her ethereal vocals with effervescent synthesizer washes and reverberating open-tuned guitar.

Recorded at Panoramic House in Stinson Beach, where Kacey worked as caretaker, as well as at home in Bolinas, on a ridge above the cloud layer in Big Sur, and at a friend’s studio in Portland, the album also serves as a document of Kacey’s time spent traveling in search of the sound she was after. After finishing initial tracking, and still reeling from the heartbreak of losing her musical community, Johansing found a necessary move was in order. Landing somewhat-blindly in Los Angeles, she continued to work on the album and hold it close. The end result is The Hiding, a tone poem about loss, growth and “leaving the insular beauty of a tight-knit community,” as Johansing describes it. The release of The Hiding comes at a time when Johansing is deeply longing to emerge from her extended absence and reconnect with her desire to create and share her music.

“The Hiding” is set for release June 2 on Night Bloom Records, a brand new label Johansing founded with Real Estate’s Alex Bleeker and longtime-friend and songwriter Jeff Manson. Website here, Facebook here.

A vibrant pop vibe is right there from the start on 'Do You Want Me'. It's a song that grows in depth musically, whilst the vocals not only drive the melody, they add additional sonic layers and atmosphere.

23rd Hour - Hypothetically.

Background - 23rd Hour are currently sharing their video for "Hypothetically" from their upcoming record Perfect Strangers out this month.

23rd Hour was created after a chance meeting at a coffee house transformed unlikely bedfellows Sherry-Lynn Lee and George Paolini into sympathetic artistic souls. They come from different backgrounds, genres and eras, but when their individual aesthetics intertwine, they hit that sweet spot of subtle adventurousness epitomized by artists such as James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, Norah Jones, and The Civil Wars.

Sherry and George creatively interlace as songwriters, singers, and instrumentalists. Songs on Perfect Strangers fluidly shift from Sherry at the center, with George on background vocals, to tunes led by George with Sherry providing support. George sings in an understated baritone, and Sherry possesses a versatile mezzo-soprano. Often their vocals blend in tight, flowing harmonies. Both are gifted instrumentalists, proficient on guitar, piano, mandolin, harmonica. And they dabble in cello, clarinet, ukulele and percussion.

Their debut album Perfect Strangers wraps visceral stories with clever wordplay and elements of jazz, classical, rock, folk and pop. Their sound is notably organic, employing acoustic instruments and, when electric, a very clean, unprocessed tone. Facebook here.

Both gentle and sensitive 'Hypothetically' mixes a beautiful duet alongside intricately delivered music, that adds to the intimate mood of this delightful song.

The Weeks - Start It Up.

Background - The new single from Easy, the highly anticipated new album from rising band The Weeks, has now been shared. The Weeks is twin brothers Cyle (vocals) and Cain (drums), Sam Williams (guitar/vocals) and Damien Bone (bass). Formed when its members were in high school in Jackson, Mississippi, the band self-released its debut EP Dog Days.

More than ten years and a handful of critically acclaimed albums later, the band has relocated to Nashville and toured extensively worldwide with Kings Of Leon and the band liked them so much, they set up their own label – Serpents & Snakes – to put out their record. But their influences run deeper than that, and the grittiness and authenticity of their sound has seen them tour with the likes of both Meat Puppets and Local H in the past.

Of the record, frontman Cyle Barnes says, “We called it Easy because every time I make music with these guys, it’s easy. It feels good. But the other side of it is there’s nothing easy about being in a band. There’s nothing easy about staying together for ten years and still wanting to make music. We have the hardest and easiest job on the planet. But it works for us.” Thematically, Easy explores new ground for the band. Bassist Damien Bone explains, “We just wanted to make a rock record. We weren’t as concerned making it a southern rock record. The southern thing is always going to part of what we do. ” Facebook here.

Our second feature for The Weeks and 'Start It Up' is another powerful rocker, with vocals and musicians competing for their own personal share in the action. Collectively they deliver a bluesy and punchy rock'n'roll delight.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Heavy Suns - Hide.

Background - There is a thumping psyche-rock single with swagger, attitude and meaning coming out on April 14th from Barnsley (UK) based Heavy Suns. When it comes down to it, who doesn’t have a love for The Beatles, Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin?

It sounds cliché that South Yorkshire’s newest and most exciting export Heavy Suns take influence from those classic bands as well as recent incarnations of the psyche-rock genres but with the dark, thumping new single ‘Hide’ the five-piece are doing things with these roots that are seriously worthy of note.

Exciting as much as it is familiar, the single is the result of years of honing the band after originating as a three piece and the current line-up finally coalescing together in 2015. “Being born and raised in a town like Barnsley you always have some sort of awareness of anybody around you that is involved in music and I think that was the case with the five of us. Travis, Tom and Luke all being in different bands at the same time around 2009. Callan later joining Travis's band and Ross working as a local gig promoter & DJ,” explains lead vocalist and guitarist Travis Glen Eaton.

Having recently sold out shows in Sheffield and Leeds, the buzz around this band is really taking hold locally across Yorkshire and title ‘Hide’ is an oxymoron for the band’s plans with its release. The in your face fuzzy riffs and psych atmospheres swallow whole all exposed to it in a gloriously free floating tsunami of hypersonic sound. Facebook here.

'Hide' cuts to the chase as a formidable, dominant rock track. The music is tight and menacing, the vocals add the swagger and psych, and the band deliver with aplomb.

The Bad Signs - Bordeen - The Konincks - Julian Jasper - Kudu Blue - Dion Lunadon

The Bad Signs - Blue Love

Background - Like the soundtrack to a cult film that doesn’t exist, The Bad Signs are three acclaimed artists’ ode to all that is cool.

Brainchild of guitarist Nat Rufus, The Bad Signs are a seedy tribute to the fringe culture of 1960’s America – the beatniks, the beehives, the bikers, the whole scene.  After ten years touring with twin brother and songwriting partner Rob Rufus in the punk rock band Blacklist Royals, inspiration struck as Rob took time off the road to edit his memoir, Die Young With Me (Simon & Schuster).

“I got the idea from this old black and white photograph,” says Nat.  “It was from ’67, just two teenagers on a motorcycle, but I wanted to start a band that sounded the way that photo looked, you know?  Like vintage rebel youth.”  The twins enlisted alt-country mainstay Samantha Harlow on lead vocals, roundly praised by Rolling Stone, CMT, and America Songwriter – her haunting performances brought something unique and critical to the group.  “She has a fragility to her voice that creates a sense of captivated unease… it’s like the sound of another time.”

So put on your shades, zip up your leather, and let your love light shine – because square is nowhere, and this is it.

The Bad Signs’ new EP, Black Magic Moments, was named an “official release” of Record Store Day 2017 – these exclusive 12” vinyl are backmasked with subliminal messages that conjure spirits when the album is spun backward.  Rob’s book, now a bestseller, recently won a 2017 National ALA Award and will out in paperback this spring. Facebook here. Tour dates on Beehive Candy's tour page.

Powerfully nostalgic sixties music vibes make 'Blue Love' just so lovable. There is all the trauma and emotion so often found on the fringes of that musical era, and the video captures some of that, however the song is just so fine in it's own right, love it!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bordeen - Trouble Making.

Background - Second single 'Trouble Making' talks about someone who is always creating problems in every situation they enter, leaving a trail of chaos all around them. Using only film photos, the chaotic elements of this video are meant to be a visual representation of what that destruction feels like.

Having grown up as siblings, Bordeen's understanding of harmonies and playing to each others best musical abilities has propelled them through their career as a band that receives recognition and great press for each additional show and festival they are a part of.

Bordeen have worked with Graham Wright from Tokyo Police Club, and they’ve been featured on CBC Radio One’s Here and Now, as well as The Edge 102.1 Jingle Bell Concert Series. Their last year has included launching their Single 'Broken Bones' across radio in Canada, playing the Rockwood in NYC, CMW, Indie Week, CMJ, a Canadian Tour from Ontario to BC and back, as well as numerous shows around the GTA. Facebook here.

Our second feature for Bordeen, this time with the new single 'Trouble Making'. It's a melodic indie pop song where once again both vocals and music are pristine, and the atmosphere is tangible giving the track even further edge.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Konincks – Daytime/Nighttime.

Background - Singer Julia belts out the first phrase, fragments of melodies follow, restless grooves complement the whole spectrum of their colours. The Konincks unleash primal forces with their new track Daytime/Nighttime. Jack White is grinning 'round the corner and Ritchie Blackmore would give his blessing. The musical way the four-piece chose is distinct and evident: They expand their psychedlic blues to a vibrantly grasping contemporary blues rock. Time flies when you do what you love.

Looking back Julia, Marc, Mike & Phil played nearly all the stages of their hometown, now  they’re taking over the rest of the world. Richie Kotzen was touring with the four piece around Europe. And after having released an EP and an album indie-magazines (Rockstar mag), radios (international airplays) as well as rock origins (Metalhammer) found great interest for these four rednecks. It might be because The Konincks dash head on and with a fierce heart in poetry and rhytms, singing guitars and hypnotic compositions like there’s no tomorrow.

Though, looking forward, the world comes into being: 2017 starts with the new single Daytime/Nightime; a taste of the upcoming EP (graphically designed by New-York-Artist Noemi Manser). Julias emphatic voice won't indulge in Patti Smith comparisons, instead she evolves an intense indepentence, which grounds and stimulates the listener at the same time. Two years ago the music of The Konincks origanted from old souls, now they contribute greatly to the Zeitgeist of our time. Vehement, relentless, dew-fresh, approachable; and this despite their subtlety which today's radio often lack. This spring there is no way around The Konincks pending between illusion and reality, will and ability. Facebook here, website here.

'Daytime/Nighttime' is a swaggering, bluesy rock'n'roll song. The band are gutsy, the vocals energised and soulful, the whole thing is fabulous, play it loud!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Julian Jasper - 2AM, Chinatown / I Don't Mind.

Background - Born in San Diego and currently based in LA, Julian Jasper is a Steely Dan for the 21st century, or maybe a lapsed Rundgren after he crossed paths with Ariel Pink. “2AM, Chinatown” sounds like Boz Scaggs on a dopamine bender, with Jasper distractedly strutting and bouncing from one disused phone booth to another looking for a connection.

“I Don’t Mind” effortlessly evokes an early morning in a beach town: the deserted streets, the closed-up burrito stands, the marine layer and its endless overcast coastal skies, terraces of bougainvillea, rhododendrons, and ice plant.

His debut EP is the sound of someone talking to themselves, which is appropriate, because at the heart of the California dream is a sense of loneliness, an ugly isolation, an iron fist behind a sunny smile. Misra Records is gearing up to release his debut EP 2AM, Chinatown/I Don't Mind (Expanded Edition) on May 5th. Facebook here.

I remember seeing Steely Dan at London's legendary Rainbow Theatre back in the day (I was very young of course :). The above reference has some mileage musically, as does the mention of Boz Scaggs. That said  '2AM, Chinatown' and 'I Don't Mind' have enough of their own stuff going on and Julian Jasper's vocals give the material definition with his own style. Both songs are refined as should be expected when running the previously mentioned comparisons, looking forward to the expanded edition.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kudu Blue - Sugar Lemz.

Background - Brighton based quartet Kudu Blue announce their debut EP ‘Shaded’ and share the new single ‘Sugar Lemz’. Written, recorded, and produced entirely by the band in their home studio in Brighton, ‘Sugar Lemz’ incorporates a diverse set of influences to create something that sounds both timeless, yet refreshingly modern.

"Sugar Lemz is probably our favourite track from the new EP” - the band proclaim. “It's intentionally something a bit different from the other music we have put out. We wanted to make a chilled track that you could put on in the living room at 5am after a heavy night.”

Chilled out the track certainly is - without taking away from its immediate appeal. Kudu Blue are incredibly smart in the way they unite electronically tinged instrumentals and intricate production flourishes, with singer Clementine Douglas’ soulful jazz-inflected vocal lines. Not only do Kudu Blue create intriguing sonic soundscapes with their songwriting, but they also have an innate ability to deliver on the live front. Combining their collective musical talents on the stage - they’re a force to be reckoned with, and are sure to be in for a fruitful year ahead.

Selling out their debut London headline show towards the end of 2016, they’re today announcing their next headline show at London’s Camden Assembly, along with an appearance at The Great Escape Festival in May, dates of which can be found below. Kudu Blue’s debut EP ‘Shaded’ is out April 28th, 2017. Facebook here.

Oh this is good! 'Sugar Lemz' mixes dreamy soulful vocals with some original synthy sounds. The track drifts and gently twists around a core feeling of calmness and serenity, beautiful.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dion Lunadon - Fire.

Background - Following the release of his single "Fire" last month, Dion Lunadon (of A Place To Bury Strangers / The D4) returns with a brand new video. The song is from his forthcoming debut solo album, which was recorded over a three-month period in Brooklyn, NY. The album features Robi Gonzalez (APTBS) on drums and Blaze Bateh from Bambara on select tracks including "Fire".

"With "Fire" I wanted wild and heavy guitars with heavy sentiment in the first vocal line to match. Something that grabs you and demands attention. Not background music," Lunadon explains of the track. The album also features mixing by Chris Woodhouse (Mayyors, Ty Segall, The Intelligence, Thee Oh Sees) on select tracks including "Com/Broke".

During a short break in touring with APTBS, Lunadon had a rush of inspiration in the form of a creative spasm — a neurotic impulse to make a batch of songs and do it right then and right there.

What resulted is quite a jump away from his work in APTBS and draws more influence from bands like Toy Love and The Gun Club, as well as New Zealand unknowns such as Gestalt and Supercar. Dion Lunadon’s debut Self-Titled album is set for release on June 9th via Agitated Records. Pre-order through Bandcamp here, Facebook here.

Packing power and intrigue from the word go 'Fire' is an aural assault of musical noise and emotion. Vocals scream from somewhere in the midst of the track, as emotions run high. The accompanying video is a blast in it's own right, play even louder and shake away every last cobweb!!

Weekend Wonders: Clint Wilson - Cassels - Stac - Bettie Serveert - Lover - Dolly Spartans - You'll Never Get To Heaven

Clint Wilson - Hungover.

Background - Melbourne singer/songwriter Clint Wilson set to release latest single ‘Hungover’ on the 31st of March. Clint Wilson is a singer/songwriter from Melbourne Victoria. Bored with the thought of playing covers in pubs for the rest of his life, he decided at the start of 2016 to write songs about real life events happening to himself and his friends.

‘Hungover’ is the latest release from Clint Wilson, it compels the listener with a floaty, summer rock vibe. The track was recorded at Pony Studios in Hallam, produced by Damien Young and mastered by Joe Carra at Crystal Mastering. “Hungover is a song about a friend that you no longer have time for, or a really good friend that stands out from all the others, depending on the listener. When I wrote the lyrics I wanted the chorus to have a few different meanings, depending on how the listener is feeling. The line at the end of the chorus "lets let it all float away" could mean our friendship or our troubles.” - Clint Wilson

Clint’s music is a blend of Australian rock and pop with a sprinkling of folk on top. He has been playing guitar since he was 12 and started playing in bands as soon as he could string together a few power chords. Clint has been gigging as a solo acoustic act all over Melbourne for the last three years and started writing his own songs at the start of 2016. He started recording his debut EP ‘Red Headed Thief’ in September and released it online early in 2017. Clint is currently pouring his heart into a 12 track album he will be releasing toward the end of 2017. Facebook here.

Clint Wilson's distinct and pleasing vocals are just right for a song such as 'Hungover'. Musically the track has richness with an expansive guitar lead sound and high quality production. Clearly Clint has a knack for writing and structuring songs.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cassels - The Weight.

Background - The precociously talented art-punk two-piece Cassels today announce a compilation of their previous material for Big Scary Monsters, now available here on vinyl for the first time, and three new songs in the form of the ‘Foreword’ LP.

The band have called 'Foreword' a precursor to their debut album, which they have are in the process of working on at the moment and is expected to drop later this year. ‘Foreword’ will be available on the 7th April via Big Scary Monsters.

The band will tour with labelmates Meat Wave in April/May and are confirmed to play 2000 Trees in July, tour dates are on Beehive Candys tour page, pre-order here.

With the might and thunder that two piece bands so often manage to deliver, 'The Weight' is a determined track where the vocals are emotive and personal, and the music is centred on an electric guitar. Overall it's label of art punk seems fair, as it veers between both styles.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stac - Me And You.

Background - London Singer Songwriter STAC releases Me and You from her forthcoming EP - Perpetual, free to download when you pre-order the EP through Bandcamp.

Having released her debut album on WahWah45s in 2010, 2017 sees former BRIT school student STAC write, record, co-produce and self release her follow-up EP on her own label; 2 Points Records. Perpetual delivers timeless, compelling songwriting and combines achingly beautiful melodies with Badu-esque cool. Compared by Mark Ronson to a young Minnie Ripperton, in a world saturated by auto-tune and vocal effects, the simple beauty of her voice cuts effortlessly through.

Produced with the help of Memotone (William Yates), Me and You is an idiosyncratic mix of live and electronic sounds, a song that begins simply with pianette and vocals and crescendos into a concoction of brass, strings, vocal harmonies, drum pads, electronic samples and a helicopter. Perpetual is available to buy through all good digital stores from the 28th April 2017. Bandcamp pre-order here.

'Me And You' is gently built around live and immediately sampled vocals and a stripped back soundtrack. Melodic and intimate, it's a beautiful and quite unique song, that adds some additional energy as it progresses.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bettie Serveert - Unsane.

Background - North Carolina based indie retail store and label Schoolkids Records have announced that two exclusive limited-edition vinyl titles will be released as part of the Tenth Annual Record Store Day event, to be held on April 22nd, 2017.

Dutch indie legends Bettie Serveert return on their 25th Anniversary with their 11th Studio Album “Damaged Good”. This limited edition exclusive transparent magenta Vinyl LP (with beautiful gatefold packaging) will include a digital download and full CD. This is the only version of the LP or CD available in North America. This is one of 'The Betties' most diverse albums so far, including songs ranging from 60 seconds to an 8 min epos and everything in between.

This LP experience is intense, raw and tender, but it is also passionate and fierce. Some songs will definitely remind people of their classic 'Palomine', the debut album that started everything 25 years ago. The album is recorded and mixed with Jesse Beuker, with whom Canadian-born vocalist Carol van Dyk and lead guitarist Peter Visser have worked before on their Australian project 'Me & Stupid'. This collection of 11 tracks also includes the rock duet 'Love Sick' with Peter te Bos, vocalist from the famous Dutch band Claw Boys Claw. Website here, Facebook here.

'Unsane' has a classic indie rock feel to it, with the focus on Carol van Dyk's vocals supported by a tight and vibrant musical soundtrack. As a taster for the album, it's a good one, and if the album is as diverse as the promo suggests we could be in for a real treat.

Lover - Self-Destruct.

Background - 2017 is the year Lover invite you to be part of their world with the release of their stunning debut album 'Human Geography'.

A morbid longing for the picturesque and a desire to explore life that rarely exists beyond the boundaries of literature, where dissatisfaction is bohemian and vaguely Marxist in origin, Lover are here to show you the beauty in the darkness.

Music from the depths of dark and twisted cognition to speak to a generation opening its eyes to gender fluidity and pansexuality, Lover have been walking this road for some time. Their chemistry on stage is how you’ll find them backstage - tactile and empirical, the band only have eyes for each other.

Fronted by the enigmatic Sarah Bradbury she is the woman who men aspire to be and women dream about. Confident and alluring, she is the personification of feminine charm yet armed with the strength and flexibility of an Amazonian warrior. Sarah is front and centre, the coherent chimera of the group.

Threatening and  seductive, Lover are striding confidently into a future that looks to welcome them as one of the UK's most important emerging bands. Facebook here.

The fifth of twelve tracks on the 'Human Geography' album, 'Self-Destruct' has a post punk come new wave feel to it. The album is built around raw rock'n'roll with plenty of melodic hooks and feisty vocals. It reminds in part of Blondie's debut album in that their energy, commitment and determination just bleeds through time and again, most certainly this is a band to have on the radar from here on in.

Dolly Spartans - Hanging Out.

Background - Dolly Spartans lean, fizzy garage pop conjures up Fidlar and early Strokes. Last year, the band's guitarist died suddenly from a drug overdose at age 22, which led frontman Michael Eliran to channel the loss of his best friend into their sophomore EP, Time Sides With No One, out March 31st on Blue and Lucky. Their lead-off single documents the turmoil of a night out when social anxiety kicks in and everything becomes a struggle inside your head.

Dolly Spartans will release their sophomore EP, Time Sides With No One, March 31st on New York based indie label Blue and Lucky. The EP, written by frontman Michael Eliran, is a powerful, no-filler collection of garage pop songs.

Dolly Spartans are Michael Eliran on guitar and vocals, Jesse Barovick on guitar, Max Beirne-Shafer on bass, and Steven Bartashev on drums. In March, the band will play Brooklyn Bazaar, Knitting Factory, and Bard College, as well as a TBA event produced especially for Dolly Spartans by AdHoc, one of the most respected indie rock promoters around. April through July will see the band embark on regional and national tour. Facebook here.

Sharp garage rock with a little attitude ensures 'Hanging Out' also stands out. The band pack some energy, the vocals are engaging, in what is a timeless no nonsense rocker.

You'll Never Get To Heaven - White Light.

Background - Canadian ambient-pop duo You'll Never Get To Heaven shared the fourth track "White Light" from their upcoming album. 'Images' their third full-length album is due today.

Alice Hansen, a classically trained pianist and violinist, and Chuck Blazevic, a studio-obsessed tone-sculptor and monome performer, combine their disparate perspectives to co-curate every element of YNGTH together as equals. After gaining a groundswell of support from fans and critics all over the globe for their 2012 self-titled debut and 2014's 'Adorn', the group caught the attention of indie upstart Yellow K Records (Japanese Breakfast, Eskimeaux) on the strength of their breakout single "Caught In a Time, So Far Away".

The band has partnered with Yellow K for the release of 'Images' in a break from their otherwise staunchly independent ethos. While YNGTH has been reclusive in the past playing only a handful of select festival dates, they are currently planning their first European and North American appearances in support of 'Images' for Spring/Summer 2017. 'Images' will be issued worldwide on Vinyl/Digital via Yellow K and on limited-edition cassette via the band's own Mystic Roses imprint. Pre-order the album here, website here, Facebook here.

Our third feature for You'll Never Get To Heaven kind of suggest they are definitely producing something that appeals to me. 'White Light' is the most dreamy track so far, with a constant flowing ambient feel right from the opening notes. New album landed today, if you have liked what's been shared so far, it's a must hear at the very least.

Kill For Eden - So Many Wizards - Carl Louis - HOTT MT

Kill For Eden - Love You So.

Background - Kill for Eden are London-based purveyors of classic hard rock, radio ready riffs and powerful female vocals. Their music has been championed by XFM (presently Radio X) and Kerrang!, and seen the band likened to Skunk Anansie, Halestrom, The Cult and Garbage. The quartet have released two EPs and a self-titled album, that boasted “blistering riffs, hook-laden choruses, great vocals and a strong selection of tunes” (Fireworks Magazine). Their upcoming second studio album, Petty Crimes, is released in on 21st April 2017.

Based in London, but with a distinctly international flavour (two Brits, an Australian and a drummer from Siberia), Kill For Eden have been making high-octane heavy rock together since 2011. Kill for Eden is singer Lyla D’Souza - a seasoned professional hailing from Australia - Dave Garfield Bown - veteran guitarist who has toured alongside acts from Joe Cocker to Rammstein - alongside bassist Julian Palmer and drummer Wally Miroshnikov.

To date the group have released two EP’s (2011’s Kerosene and 2013’s Living on Mars) as well as a self-titled album (also 2013). This album saw their music hit the airwaves on XFM, Kerrang! Radio, Bloodstock Radio and on numerous independent stations across Europe. They have appeared on stages including the legendary Hard Rock Cafe, Cockermouth Rock Festival, Camden Rocks and more. The band have not slowed down - despite various members starting families in the intervening time. They continued to gig throughout, and in 2016 entered the studio to begin work on their second full-length album. The result is the forthcoming Petty Crimes. Website here, Facebook here.

One of twelve tracks 'Love You So' gives a good feel for the forthcoming album 'Petty Crimes'. It would be easy just to repeat the promos description of 'classic hard rock' however there is enough variety across the album to suggest the music goes beyond that, and certainly 'hard rock' would be an over statement for some of the material. Passion, energy and hooks galore are also a hallmark of this classic meets modern collection of songs.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So Many Wizards - Sic Boys.

Background - So Many Wizards is the dreamy, jangly dream-punk project led by Nima Kazerouni. The band have shared "Sic Boys", the first track off their upcoming album 'Heavy Vision' is due April 14 on Lolipop Records.

What began as a solo bedroom project indebted to Syd Barrett evolved into a fully-formed band that has garnered attention from Pitchfork, Stereogum, Aquarium Drunkard, and Impose Magazine; spins on BBC 1, KCRW, and SiriusXM (courtesy of Lou Reed); festival stops at SXSW and CMJ; and US and UK tours. A week after the release of their debut album, Warm Nothing, Kazerouni’s daughter was born causing his sudden move to Tucson, Arizona, taking him 500 miles away from his bandmates. Despite the distance, the band managed to release their “Night Chills”/”Daydream” 7”, a single with Converse Rubber Tracks, and shared the stage with Thee Oh Sees, No Age, Colleen Green, Audacity, Feels, Terry Malts, Lovely Bad Things, and more.

Now as a father, the delusion of adulthood began to set in. A new collection of fears and anxieties began to creep into his psyche. This was exacerbated by a series of deaths – a family member, a best friend, and the end of an 8-year long relationship. The experience left Kazerouni spiritually exhausted, culminating in a nervous breakdown, or “nervous breakthrough.” Kazerouni was finally able to lose a grip of himself and let all the problems and anxieties that he tried so hard to ignore wash over him. It was here where Kazerouni found refuge in the idea of mortality, instilling in him a new found determination to make the most of the present, because everyone’s life ultimately ends the same way. This emotional journey, from its dark hues to its liberated epiphany, is chronicled in Heavy Vision. Facebook here.

Described as dream punk 'Sic Boys' lives up to expectations. The vocals add the dreamy element, whilst the music is a mixture of punk like riffs and chord changes. it's also enormously catchy, you have been warned!

Carl Louis - Easy (feat. Frøder).

Background - Growing up on the Nordic coastline, producer Carl Louis has spent much of his career broadening his musical horizons with a number of notable credits to his name. Originally a member of electronic duo CLMD, Louis co-produced a number of notable releases including ‘Stockholm Syndrome’, which went multi-platinum in Norway and was also premiered on Pete Tong’s Radio 1 show. Afterward, Louis left the group in 2014 to pursue his own personal ambitions.

Having spent the last few years producing singles for other artists, including ARY’s debut single ‘Higher’, as well as releasing his own mini-album in 2015, Lewis has now returned to deliver his latest full-length ‘Memory Lane’. While its title may suggest a more nostalgic sound, his latest material is a smorgasbord of contemporary influences and inspirations. With a largely classical direction, the mix of ideas and directions on his latest release are clear throughout.

Whether it is the ‘Random Access Memories’-era Daft Punk sound of ‘Human Being’ or the uplifting trip-hop style of ‘Easy’, ‘Memory Lane’ manages to gather together a whole range of sounds and is able to pull off a cohesive release. New single ‘Easy’ sees the producer create an uplifting and powerful introduction, which sees him collaborate once again with Spotify Spotlight artist and ‘Stockholm Syndrome’ vocalist Frøder, and is out now with the album to follow 26th May 2017 via Toothfairy (NOR). Facebook here.

'Easy' mixes beautiful vocals with a delightful sound track that is sometimes stripped back to allow for notable additional layers of sound to build through. Plenty of attention to detail ensures this song, stands out in the electronic music scene.

HOTT MT - At Night In China Town.

Background - LA-based experimental pop duo HOTT MT shared their video for "At Night in Chinatown". The song is from their forthcoming new album 'AU' (Alternate Universe,) out May 4th via their own label Mutation Records.

The video was shot at their own warehouse space in Los Angeles, Non Plus Ultra, which was recently shut down. The duo says of their recent loss, "All of us at Non Plus Ultra have been together for years. Our ideals brought us together, and we built a space and a business on them. Non Plus Ultra showed us that we aren't alone in our desires. There are so many people in this town who share our values. We've made and lost spaces before, but this time we've got an incredible support system."

LA Weekly just named HOTT MT #25 on their list for "The 30 Best LA Rock Bands from the Past Decade, " and said, "They're the most ambitious psych-rock band in L.A., who stalked Flaming Lip's Wayne Coyne into a collaboration in 2012, and quietly dropped a track last year they produced for Kesha, without permission from Dr. Luke. They referred to the leak as "musical terrorism," a bold statement by the landlords of L.A.'s most interesting art space, Non Plus Ultra."

Hour Of The Time Majesty Twelve (HOTT MT) is an experimental pop group based in LA. Together, couple Spooki Tavi (guitar/vocals) and Ashi Dala (bass/vocals) create cartoon-like psychedelic fantasy in the dusty shimmer of East Hollywood. Since their formation in 2012, the group has collaborated  with: The Flaming Lips, Ariel Pink, Erykah Badu, and Ke$ha. They have also opened for: The Flaming Lips, Bat For Lashes and Galaxie 500. The duo will be releasing their 2nd full length album, titled 'AU' (Alternate Universe), in May 2017. Website here, Facebook here.

The story telling music video, gives some additional meaning to 'At Night In China Town' however this is a fine synthy and dreamy song more than capable of standing out with the audio only. HOTT MT are creative and confident, an exciting proposition, that promises more.

Midweek Muse: Kikagaku Moyo - Nick Blaemire - MOLLYANNA - The Company Stores

Kikagaku Moyo - In a Coil.

Background - Last week, Kikagaku Moyo released "In A Coil," the lead single, from their upcoming new EP. Their 5-track record 'Stone Garden' is set to come out April 21st, via Guruguru Brain. The band has recently announced their spring North American tour, to kick off in Philadelphia on May 2nd.

'Stone Garden' started in a basement studio in Prague with a nearly continuous session over several days and nights. The original concept was influenced by the raw and seemingly endless jams of psychedelic pioneers. The freeform songs that emerged from those sessions were refined over several months at the band's home in Tokyo where each song was sculpted into an uncommon form.

Compared to their relatively song based previous LP 'House in the Tall Grass,' 'Stone Garden' is a window into Kikagaku Moyo’s experimental side.  While improvisation is essential to their songwriting process it can take on many forms. This record enabled the band to experiment not only with instrumentation but also atonality and a playful approach to mixing.  The unexpected results have become five unique songs each woven together through the same process. Website here, Facebook here, tour dates on Beehive Candys tour page.

Musical sounds swirl around the hypnotic rhythm on 'In a Coil' whilst the vocals are softer and immersed in the mix. Trippy psych music that is just so engaging.

Nick Blaemire - She's You.

Background - New York City-based, “nerd soul“ artist, Nick Blaemire, shares his new single and music video, “She’s You” from his forthcoming release The Ampersand EP. The colorful choreography and 80s romance film inspired set is a fun look into Blaemire’s artistic mind.

Nick Blaemire’s upcoming solo release, The Ampersand EP, is a departure from his previous theater and television career. Punchland premiered the single, stating, “Every bit of this tune could easily cause one to walk the city streets and blend right in with it’s soulful bliss. Not a thing could bother a listener here. Pop and R&B merge well and the average Joe will linger on the subway just a bit more to stay in the musical dream even with that soft ending. Time to place on repeat” (Punchland). Check out the premiere here, and Punchland’s rave review of his set at Rockwood Music Hall here. With a performance at C’Mon Everybody on March 17th and an 80s teen romance inspired video on the way, Blaemire is one to keep eyes on. The Ampersand EP is due out in March 2017.

Stepping away from the Broadway stage, Blaemire is inspired by the wallflower, the underdog and that kid who doesn't yet have the guts to ask the girl out. His "nerd soul" vibe perfectly bridges classic soul with the innocence and cliche of 80s films - John Hughes, for example. Combining classic soul hooks with a pop energy, Blaemire’s collection of easily digestible tunes is not to be missed. Playing off of this character, Blaemire radiates positivity, bringing a new energy to the mainstream pop scene. Facebook here.

'She's You' is an infectious pop song with upbeat soulful vocals and a vibrant soundtrack. The music video catches and conveys the mood of the piece, it's now clear nerd soul rules, in the shape of Nick Blaemire.

MOLLYANNA - Louder.

Background - Raw, distorted guitars meet gritty synth and powerful vocals - MOLLYANNA are dark, dramatic and uncompromising. Their heavy sound and energetic performances make for an unforgettable live show.

MOLLYANNA have supported Joseph on their UK tour, and Kate Jackson, (formerly of The Long Blondes), appeared at Tramlines and won the 2016 SYFN award for Best Song in their annual music video awards.

“Louder,” is a flawless track which we have really high hopes for. Everything from the effortless vocals to the overall composition of the song is perfect and we are excited to see it grow. Facebook here.

Slowly the power and drama unfolds as 'Louder' unleashes it's passion. The band provide energy and momentum occasionally adding melodic refrains. Vocals are poured out with passion and angst, there's a story to be told, and you will hear it!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Company Stores - So Good.

Background - The Company Stores are proud to introduce "So Good", the first single from their upcoming sophomore LP, Little Lights (April 7th).  The band ventured to Echo Mountain Studios in Ashville, NC to begin the recording process with Grammy-winning Producer Julian Dwyer.  "So Good" features lead singer, Casey Litz's soulful, sultry vocals, a funky horn section, and a gritty backbeat that embodies the excitement of finding new love.

Hailing from Charleston, WV, The Company Stores combine Appalachian folk influences with a progressive, electronic sound that isn't afraid to break boundaries and genre lines;  even delving into hip-hop and funk territory.  The band quickly made a name for themselves following their 2014 regionally acclaimed LP, Rollin' In.  The Company Stores continued to tour, grow their fanbase, and hone in the eclectic sound that would become the groundwork for their upcoming full-length, Little Lights.

This is a band that will never lose touch with their roots.  The moniker refers to a store in Appalachian coal towns during the 19th and 20th century, where workers were paid in coal money or "scrip", leaving them with no exit from the mines. It is a metaphor for the band's mountain sound as well as a throwback to their heritage and the struggles of the common man. Little Lights will be available Friday, April 7th via independent release. Website here, Facebook here.

'So Good' is the only track I have heard from the forthcoming album and excuse this moment of weakness but so far, So Good (ouch). This one of those songs that just about covers all bases, it's musically tight and polished, the vocals are feisty and passionate, the hooks are constant and dig deep. In a word, magnificent.

BeeVids: Kelly Lee Owens - Morganway - Midnight Vesta - Marina Maximillian

Kelly Lee Owens – Anxi.

Background - Kelly Lee Owens, the 28-year old London-based producer, is set to release her self-titled debut album, next Friday, March 24th via Smalltown Supersound. Additionally, Kelly is excited to present the music video (her first!) for “Anxi” ft. Jenny Hval. Directed by visual artist Kim Hiorthøy.

Before starting work on her self-produced, debut album, Kelly Lee Owens turned her keen ear towards dance music after working in a record store with techno producer Daniel Avery. Her voice and contributions can be heard on Avery’s Drone Logic. Since then, she self-released two white label 12”s, with last fall’s “Oleic” EP to follow.

Her self-titled solo album is first and foremost Owens’ vision — it bridges the gaps between cavernous techno, spectral pop, and Krautrock’s mechanical pulse, and it brims with exploratory wonder. It delves into a variety of moods - sadness, anxiety, and darkly shaded ecstasy - with a trippy-eyed clarity and confidence. Live dates on Beehive Candy's tour page, Facebook here.

Imaginative and addictive 'Anxi' mixes flowing beats alongside some creative musical ideas. Working around these are calm and smooth vocals, complemented by a song that is happy to alter speed and direction keeping the listener intrigued.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Morganway - My Love Ain't Gonna Save You.

Background - Morganway, the Norfolk five-piece pride themselves on the high standard of their engaging live performances, and they have caught the eye of a range of festivals. Subsequently, they recently headlined The Open's prestigious OH1 festival, in their hometown of Norwich, on the Banking Hall stage. Other early 2017 shows include London gigs at The Troubadour, The Islington and The Bedford, as well as a special headline performance at Cambridge’s muchloved Portland Arms.

Morganway are working towards the release of their second EP ‘The Hurricane EP’ on April 7th, following the glowing reception of their debut EP ‘No Tomorrows’ last year. The lead single ‘My Love Ain’t Gonna Save You’ exposes the band’s diversity with a deeper, grittier sound, whilst still maintaining the familiar roots influence that fans of the band have come to know and love. With its captivating, catchy hook and electric guitar-driven chorus, the band’s sound bends into the pop terrain breaking genre boundaries to craft an irresistible fusion sound.

“Some songs are written exactly as they end up, others go on journeys. ‘My Love Ain’t Gonna Save You’ is definitely a traveler. The guitar riff and main melody came first, other parts were gradually discovered. I really like the vocals at the end, so much is happening all at once it feels like it’s going to explode. I think the song is all about that tension. The lyrics leave room for interpretation, but the idea is simple; you’re on your own. It asks questions but gets no answers… a bit like love really!” Facebook here, website here.

'My Love Ain't Gonna Save You' has something of a modern folk feel to it, with plenty of energy. Notable vocals and harmonies are supported by the bands tight and confident music.

Midnight Vesta - Moving Day.

Background from Midnight Vesta - Life is about managing the twists and turns that you encounter day-to-day.

The date of birth, the date of death, and the “dash” in between: the loss of loved ones, failed relationships, and the prospect of new ones. It's all about transition. With that in mind, Moving Day felt like the appropriate lead single from our new album.

‘Seconds’ was recorded in an auto garage tucked deep inside Toronto's east end, and mastered by Juno award winning engineer Siegfried Meier.

The resulting album is a sonic buffet of homegrown tunes that are fresh yet familiar. Facebook here, live dates on Beehive Candy's tour page.

Melodic and crisp sounding, 'Moving Day' is a refreshing indie pop or maybe rock song, with  reflective and thoughtful lyrics. The band come across as relaxed and capable, delivering a track that hopefully will tease a good few listeners towards their forthcoming album.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Marina Maximillian - My Boy.

Background - APE is a new kind of record label, with a new way of getting things done. Founded by Tamir Muskat (Balkan Beat Box) and Eyal Gruenberg, APE Records is a hybrid between a production house, a music label, and a branding company. The label is set to release their debut EP, APE Vol 1, a compilation of the first three singles with studio and live versions, on March 24.

The primal creative force behind all APE projects is producer Tamir Muskat, founding member and drummer of Balkan Beat Box, as well one of Israel’s leading music producers. Muskat’s production credits outside of BBB include Asaf Avidan’s last two albums, Different Pulses and Gold Shadow, J.U.F. (Gogol Bordello), Firewater, and much more. Eyal Gruenberg, co-founder of APE Records, is as business-minded as Muskat is creative. “The difference between APE and traditional labels is that we don’t release albums – only singles,” Gruenberg says. “And most songs are in English, so they have international appeal, but don’t get pigeon-holed as ‘world music’.”

When APE launched, the producer wanted to challenge himself and his collaborators to exceed what they’d created in the past. “Making beats and combining sounds from all over was already part of my DNA,” Muskat says. “But I was looking for a path to the next level.” The search took time.

“My Boy” from Mariana Maximilian was the first release by the new label. Maximilian and Muskat wanted a vintage-sounding sample for the song, so the producer recorded and re-recorded into a tape machine until he found the perfectly damaged sound. Tamir's crazy beat painted a scene in my head, some mysterious environment with lots of action and movement," Marina says. The singer was several months pregnant while working on the single. "My unborn baby was always on my mind," she says. Through the writing process, Marina discovered the theme: carrying love from the inside to the outside. "I felt the melody should be a bit childish and repetitive. I guess the song is about the adventure that is life, but also the hidden dangers."  Label site here.

The EP comprises of: Marina Maximilian – My Boy
Loco Hot Feat. A-WA – I’m A Tribe
Renno Feat. Hen & Gili – Perfect Is Dead
Marina Maximilian – My Boy (Live in The Jungle Version)
Loco Hot Feat. A-WA – I’m A Tribe (Live in The Jungle Version)
Renno Feat. Hen & Gili – Perfect Is Dead (Live in The Jungle Version)

Taken from the labels compilation EP 'My Boy' is a very good indication of the vibrant and creative sounds that APE Records have gone in search of. Mixing eclectic creativity with plenty of hooks and stylish vibes, the six songs suggest they are on to something very good here.

Plus a little 'extra something' for our discerning and appreciative friends here
