XTC - Live In Belgium 1982.

This is a show from the final XTC tour (this concert was broadcast on FM radio), from a gig at L'Ancienne Belgique, Brussels, Belgium, back on the 7th March 1982.

The last major hit of XTC's touring phase was "Senses Working Overtime," the first single from their double album English Settlement and a top 10 hit in 1982.

At the peak of their popularity, the band embarked on a major tour, but Andy Partridge suffered a mental breakdown on stage during one of the first concerts of the tour in Paris on March 18th, 1982. The European and British dates were cancelled and after completing only one show in San Diego the whole US leg was also abandoned.

Comments:

From Wikipedia: XTC's Andy Partridge's breakdown, which manifested itself as uncontrollable stage fright, was reportedly precipitated by his wife throwing away his supply of Valium. According to the band's biography, Andy had become dependent upon the drug after it was prescribed to him as a teenager during his parents' divorce. He reportedly was never withdrawn from the drug and became dependent on it. Concerned about her husband's dependence on the drug, Partridge's wife threw his tablets away — without seeking medical advice — just before the Paris concert.

Andy Partridge particularly needed the medication to cope with the grinding monotony of concert touring, which he had always hated, but had endured for the good of the band. As a result, when deprived of the medication Partridge suffered anxiety attacks of such severity whilst touring that he was soon forced to withdraw permanently. Since then, XTC have been exclusively a studio band, although they have given occasional live-to-air performances from radio stations, and have made a handful of TV appearances as well. (XTC ceased in 2005, however expanded CD reissues are planned for this year).

Bad Company - Electric Ladyland 1992

In 1986 Mick Ralphs and Simon Kirke decided to re team for a new project. Their label, Atlantic Records , however, insisted they resume the Bad Company name. But Paul Rodgers was already engaged with a new super group called The Firm.

So the remaining two members hired ex-Ted Nugent vocalist Brian Howe as the new lead singer, Steven Price as the new bass player and Greg Dechert (ex-Uriah Heep) on keyboards. Brian Howe's vocal style brought more of a pop-rock sound to the band, as opposed to Paul Rodgers' more bluesy style.

Over a six -year span from 1986 to 1992, this version of the band released four albums including Fame and Fortune, Dangerous Age, the platinum selling Holy Water and Here Comes Trouble.

The final studio album of the Brian Howe era, 1992's Here Comes Trouble, featured the Top 40 hit 'How About That', and 'This Could Be The One' (number 87). The album went Gold but the formula was growing stale. Before touring in support of Here Comes Trouble, the band added ex-Foreigner, Roxy Music and Small Faces bassist Rick Wills and Dave Colwell, a protégé of Ralphs, was now a full-time member.

This recording is from a performance at the Electric Ladyland studios in 1992 with a small audience, enjoying a show that was undertaken for FM broadcast and promotional purposes.

Comments:

The actual date of this show seems to have been lost over time however the middle of December 1992 seems quite likely. This recording has had band promos and any other material edited out and leaves just the actual live performance from Bad Company.

Having seen Bad Company perform one of their first ever gigs in Guildford, England back in 1973 or early 1974 (OK the memory ain't perfect), this recording sounds very different, from what was a blues driven band that still drew parallels with Free. Paul Rodgers, Mick Ralphs and Simon Kirke performed together again during the summer of 2009, playing ten shows throughout the United States. During November 2009, it was announced that the original remaining line-up will play eight exclusive UK dates in April 2010.

2010FM - February Magazine One

I was not sure quite what to make of Peasant (Damien DeRose) when I was first sent a song of his last year, for whatever reason something was missing for me, and however much this site is about supporting new artists and music, liking what you hear has to be a key part of any endorsement.

OK so you have guessed what happened next, but I will state it anyway, was I surprised and delighted when I received a copy of his forthcoming album!

His record companies promo actually states "While the last album gave many people their first taste of Peasant, in the eyes of the moniker’s human form, Damien DeRose, this was a mere appetizer to what would soon come to fruition". So that's what happened, it turns out I was not to keen on the appetizer, but I have to say the second course 'Shady Retreat' is absolutely delightful.

'Well Alright'

Website: MySpace.
Buy (pre-order): Paper Garden Records.

Shady Retreat is available via Paper Garden Records on March 2nd, 2010 in North America and April 5th in Europe.

Other reviews that I can only agree with, put the case for giving Peasant a good long listen...

“What becomes so beautifully clear in listening to DeRose sing – in that clear mountain stream, weepy-voiced way of his – is that none of his characters and none of us are ever rid of any of the people that we’ve shared the dark or a kiss with.”-Daytrotter

“Though his music is unassuming and acoustic, when armed with a guitar, DeRose makes music that beckons and calls out, as if demanding to be heard. DeRose also has a secret weapon: a voice that seems to expose his very soul.” – NPR Second Stage

“DeRose’s vocals float above acoustic guitar melodies, evoking the lyrical eloquence and delicate arrangements of Rogue Wave and the late Elliott Smith.” – Magnet Magazine

OK the second offering this time round is for a band previously mentioned on Beehive Candy Emanuel and The Fear who, with less than a year under their belt since the initial self-titled EP release, Emanuel and the Fear have been building their profile and reputation rapidly, indeed some times the hype is worthy and in their case I tend to agree.

Now armed with a brand new 18-song album, Emanuel and the Fear are raising the bar yet again with 'Listen'. To be released in North America on March 9th and in Europe on March 22nd with Spring and Summer tour plans both domestic and abroad, not to mention playing two of NYC’s best venues (Music Hall of Williamsburg and Gramercy Theatre) in February and March, Emanuel and the Fear will be bringing their music and full live experience to listeners across the globe, so keep any eye out for them! Emanuel and the Fear has sequestered themselves for the better part of 2009 to record and build into its first full length master-piece titled 'Listen' at Ishlab Music Studios (Jet, Kudu, Dead Perez). The album was mixed by Patrick Dillett (David Byrne, They Might Be Giants, Mary J Blige) and Mastered by Doug Van Sloun at Focus Mastering (Bright Eyes, Cursive, The Faint, Tokyo Police Club).

The Hush Now have managed to gain a lot of attention in recent months and not surprising with reviews like this:

“...a little Stone Roses, a dash of Guided By Voices, a smidgen of Flaming Lips and a dose of Yo La Tengo; This is superior indie pop from a band well worth keeping a very close eye and ear on.” – UK Music Review

Oh and while we are all name dropping you can add in "a unique, ivy league, indie-pop-rock sound reminiscent of early Weezer and Wilco with the muscle of shoegaze’ s glory days mixed in".

Well OK lets give the guys a break as they have also achieved coverage from outlets such as the UK Telegraph, Magnet, The Devil Wears Tuna, Boston Phoenix, Green Shoelace, and My Crazy Music Blog, among countless others. What does Beehive Candy think? Yep we have happily jumped on the hype band wagon, and think you should check these guys out pretty sharpish.

The first single from their forthcoming album 'Constellations', 'Hoping and Waiting', has been circulating the web since it’s release in December 2009, and now it’s time for the second single 'Contrails'

Listen:
'Contrails'

Website: MySpace.

I understand that Constellations will be offered to the public as a free digital download upon it’s release on the 16th February 2010 (The Hush Now's debut is also available for free download at their official Myspace page).

Paul Burch like most musicians is looking for angle to encourage the sale of his recordings, and any musician who has a photo of himself alongside Laura Cantrell and the late John Peel on his website is more or less guaranteed to gain the interest of Beehive Candy.

On March 1st (2010) Paul Burch & WPA Ballclub will begin the streaming and sale of an A side and B side single every month throughout the rest of the year.

For a one-time fee of only $5 fans can join the Paul Burch Record Club which will allow them to subscribe to the entire year-long series.

For $10, in addition to receiving all 20 tracks in mp3 form, Paul Burch Record Club members will receive, at the end of the year, a CD of the singles with custom artwork. An additional $15 level will get fans all the mp3s, a CD at the end of the year, and a personalized thank-you note from Paul!

Checkout his website that is currently streaming some of his music HERE, and finally for those not familiar with Paul here is some background information (and I quote):

Paul Burch, a writer of unmistakably modern but instantly classic American songs, arrived in Nashville in the early 90's and helped spark the honky tonk revival in downtown Nashville with marathon performances at legendary Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge. Paul's 7th album Still Your Man was released to critical claim in 2009 and features his group the WPA Ballclub along with Tim O'Brien and Kelly Hogan. Paul Burch's ear for producing and arranging has made him a natural collaborator to performers from every kind of genre including Dr. Ralph Stanley, Vic Chesnutt, Mark Knopfler, Lambchop, the Mekons, Beverly Knight, and the Grammy nominated comeback by legend Charlie Louvin. Burch also served as music consultant to the PBS documentary “The Appalachians" and wrote a soundtrack to Tony Earley's debut novel and NY Times bestseller "Jim the Boy".

John Hiatt - Take Root Festival 2008.

This is John Hiatt performing a solo acoustic set at the Take Root Festival in Oosterpoort, Groningen, Holland back on the 4th October 2008. The material is a mixture of songs from across the years, along with a few from his current album of the time 'Same Old Man'.

Some artists have the ability to grab my attention from the first chord and in this case the power, passion, energy and full sound just adds to the occasion.

The radio host mentioned that John was flown in especially for this gig, having performed in North America throughout the summer promoting the album. He has also worked alongside Lyle Lovett on a number of occasions since 2008 and is currently touring Europe performing undertaking both solo and joint gigs with Lyle.
