Sandy Denny - London 1972

Reloaded 13/May/2015 - I am delighted to be able to share this rare recording of Sandy Denny again, this is a treasure for all Sandy Denny fans.

This is a recording of Sandy Denny live at the Eltham Well Hall Open Theatre, London, back on May 5th, 1972. This was apparently an open air gig with folding chairs provided for the audience.

The recording was made on a Radio Shack $20 cassette recorder with a built in condenser mic, and considering this, the sound quality is surprisingly listenable with clear vocals and instruments and very little 'noise or hiss'. The recording made it on to DAT and kept the quality as close to the original standard as possible. For fans of Sandy this really is a must have. Richard Thompson was also in the band.

Sandy Denny's second solo album, Sandy (with a cover photograph by David Bailey) was released in 1972 and for many remains her most cohesive musical statement as a singer and songwriter.

Paul Simon - Live in London - 2006

Links: Official site HERE. Wikipedia tries to stay factual HERE.

Comments: The UCL (University College Theatre) is in Central London and seats 535, making for quite an intimate gig, especially for someone who can fill major city parks.

I understand he also performed 'Cecilia' and 'Boy In the Bubble' on the night, these may have been edited out to fit the show into a nice rounded one hour (ah - those schedulers and their stop watches).

Ironically the introduction goes on way to long and is rather gushing, (learning point, never let an obsessive fan near a microphone). The first song 'Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes' is nicely re-worked, the guy after all is a musical legend, that's all that needed to be said at the start.

2015 - Out Of Our Inbox - Edition Three

Edition three already, well there have been some real gems come our way and so to share them seems reasonable, would you not agree, anyway enough tripping over my own words and down to business or music if you prefer...

Well if this round up is called 'Out Of Our Inbox' and a glance above confirms that it it, then King of the Travellers did not so much come out of it, more they leaped, charged and flew out, taking no prisoners, with the fantastic track 'Trenches'. An absolute powerhouse of a song, genre busting, energising and what's more there from Freemantle, Australia, so once again Australia is throwing up another great band for the world to discover.

They have been described as follows - Having already established themselves as one of Fremantle’s most exciting up and coming bands, King of the Travellers are set to explode onto the national scene with the release of their upcoming single ‘Trenches’. A band that’s almost impossible to pin down to a single genre, The Travellers draw on a number of influences including punk, folk, gypsy music and sea shanties. In their two and a half years as a group, they've proven themselves to be amongst the most entertaining live bands in Perth today.

‘Trenches’ very much follows in this vein, with an emphasis on punk and sounds from Eastern Europe. The use of mandolin, French horn and accordion coupled with the distinctive vocal delivery of singer Nathan Hull gives the song all the trademark sounds of a King of the Travellers song. The single was recorded at Blackbird studio with acclaimed producer Dave Parkin (Jebediah, Karnivool, but not the coach of Carlton Football Club’s 1995 Premiership team) and mastered by Grammy Award winning William Bowden (Gotye). ‘Trenches’ paints a picture of a handful of soldiers in a nondescript war choosing a bottle of booze over guns and ammunition. It’s short, sharp, catchy and brimming with attitude.

Crooked House Road are a Toronto based indie folk band who contacted Beehive Candy just over a week ago and kindly provided me with a copy of their debut album due out on May 23rd 2015 and the self titled album is produced by Juno winner and Grammy nominee Ken Whiteley..

This is how member Shaina Silver-Baird describes the band - Crooked House Road began when I met Mirian Kay at an open mic and we immediately sparked a friendship. She became my musical partner in crime and we began performing my original songs around Toronto. Since then Crooked House Road has grown into a full band with our own unique fusion of folk, pop and blues music.

After a successful first show at Soulpepper Theatre, we set out to build our repertoire and find a solid collective of musicians to write our first full length album. In a way the Crooked House Road musicians found us: Derek Gray was my upstairs neighbour; Gram Whitty was a substitute musician we brought in for one gig and never let go; I met Joshua Skye Engel at synagogue playing a show for kids; and Tom Mifflin was an old buddy from university.

Website: HERE.

From this highly recommended album we have the following live session recording of the opening track:

You have got to check out El Conjunto Nuevo Ola (ECNO), and their incredible music. Here are some well written words about them as I'm being lazy again.

ECNO’s mission is simple: blend elements of cumbia, new wave, rock, and disco to get audiences dancing. Offering original songs and hits from iconic groups such as La Sonora Dinamita, Chico Che, and Rigo Tovar, ECNO have appeared on several prominent Hispanic television networks, including Telemundo, Telefutura, and Univision. More information on El Conjunto Nueva Ola is available on their official website HERE.

A peculiar concept for a band, ECNO have drawn attention from thousands of people who have labeled them “los enmascarados,” or "the masked ones.” Their faces are covered with luchador (wrestler) masks at all times, thus hiding the true identity of each group member.

While many media reporters have asked, no one yet knows who these anonymous rockers are. What is known is that ECNO have graced the stages of the top Hispanic television networks, including Telemundo, Telefutura, and Univision. The one common factor in all of their performances is top-notch entertainment and the band’s obvious intent to spread a genuine sense of goodwill. Singer Urbano Lopez of ECNO recently summarized the band’s goals:

"At our shows, we want the good times to be a sure thing. We are musical wrestlers, and our enemy is the mundane and boring aspects of everyday life. We want every single audience member to sing, dance, and enjoy themselves.”

Lots of great videos over on YouTube HERE. The wonderful cover version of Billy Idol's 'Dancing With Myself' below.

Jennie Vee is gaining a lot of attention from some very influential people in the music business. She is currently on tour as bassist for Courtney Love, who is touring with Lana Del Rey. Jennie’s second EP, Spying, is due out this summer, as her solo career goes from strength to strength.

As I Remain bone idle here are some words written about Jennie by someone else - Last year Jennie caught the ear of Grammy Award-winning producer Chris Lord-Alge (Bruce Springsteen, Green Day, Stevie Nicks) when he handpicked and remixed her song “Wicked.” Years after Alan McGee left a handwritten compliment for Jennie because he liked her demos, the Creation Records founder immediately booked her for his first-ever Creation Unsigned Acoustic Night. Snow Patrol’s Paul Wilson mixed the title track of her upcoming release. In the UK and Europe, Jennie is signed to 25 Hour Convenience Store, owned and operated by Gary Powell of The Libertines.

Jennie’s dedication to memorable songwriting reminds listeners of what they love about ‘80s college rock. But she also makes her songs her own, steeping her mixes in the soothing brashness of deeply revered shoegaze and dream pop pioneers such as Ride and My Bloody Valentine. Jennie’s vocals, unfettered, deeply emotional, feature perfectly arranged verses, driving pre-choruses, and finally, airy, memorable choruses.

She has very recently made an excellent cover of Echo and the Bunnymen’s “Lips Like Sugar,” and we feature the video below!

Will from The Rebel Light contacted us a few days ago and had this to say - Music saved my life…and so did moving to California.

A few years ago I moved to the West Coast.  I was in a band that I didn’t believe in, playing songs that I’d written but felt soulless.  Fortunately for me that band fell apart.

When we started The Rebel Light, nothing was planned and no direction was discussed.  We just let the music take control and simply stopped caring about what or who we should be or sound like.  Most importantly we just ignored all the bullshit and just started playing what we felt in our hearts…..

The culture and those infamous California vibes began to seep into our soul and penetrate every part of our music.
We became truly inspired by our new world and our sound slowly began to evolve, taking in the past and present sounds of the California landscape. We think we have finally found our own voice and hope that our music does an okay job at representing our new home.

We have really tried to embrace that DIY spirit and produce/engineer all our own music….recording vocals in a bathroom and the drums in a woodshed. We start reaching out to some radio stations ourselves and so far people seem to like what we are doing.

Clearly California and the West Coast has it's own special something that sparks so much great music along with innovation and experimentation. The band have been getting airplay from some of the better U.S. radio stations ( KROQ, KCRW, KEXP, KTCL, KCSN), and from what I have heard from The Rebel Light deservedly so! Check out the track Strangers, it has that 'Californian something'.

========================================================================

We are back to Australia for our final piece in this round up and Ludodowwn (which my spell checker is telling me should be 'let down' and nothing could be further from the truth). There has, in my opinion, been some really strong tracks in this round up and Ludodowwn is a great artist to end with, so until next time, Enjoy!

Ludodowwn is the work of 20-year-old West Australian songwriter and electronic producer, Bensen James. Beginning as a medium for bedroom sound experimentation, James found it demanding more and more of his attention, resulting in his departure of several bands and university to decipher what it wanted. After a long process of evolution, Ludodowwn now wants to be heard.

Big World is the compelling first single, a suburban ode about longing for connection. Fusing understated lyricism with over large soundscapes, Big World announces an exciting new voice in electronic music.

Parliament - Funkadelic - Live in Detroit USA - 1978

Reloaded 11/May/2015 - This feature first appeared on Beehive Candy back in March 2008, we were a young music blog, full of excitement that people were actually visiting us, sometimes as many as 25 in one week (yes a whole 25). To be honest we enjoyed being a part of the party back then, although I think we took ourselves a little to seriously! This remains a good recording of George Clinton & his many fine band members. Not sure if all the links still work, however this has been requested for re-uploading many times by passers by so the one that matters does!

-----------------------------------------------------------

I first became aware of Parliament through the album 'Mothership Connection'. All things Funkadelic, George Clinton, and P Funk naturally would follow. To be honest at that time in the 1970's my personal music taste was dominated by rock and punk and the whole new wave thing here in the UK.

However Parliament were one of those 'cross over' bands, that I expect registered with more than just me, a stereotypical rock music fan of the era. Trying to separate George Clinton, Parliament and Funkadelic in the late seventies is a tricky business, so I will take the convenient way out, along with many others and treat them as one act.

Music purists can find out more about the Mothership Connection album HERE, Parliament HERE, or visit George Clinton's My Space site HERE. George Clinton and Parliament / Funkadelic continue to tour and astound as I type this post, (and have done so, for along time after this originally appeared on Beehive Candy).

This is Parliament - Funkadelic live in Detroit, MI, USA, on new years day January 1st 1978.

Setlist:
  • Funkentelechy
  • Cosmic Slop
  • Maggot Brain
  • Mothership Connection
  • Swing Down Sweet Chariot
  • Flashlight
Sound Quality: Very good clean FM Stereo.

Sly and The Family Stone - Fillmore East 1968

Reloaded 10/May/2015 - This is Sly and The Family Stone The band formed in 1966, and by the time of these concerts in 1968, were highly regarded following their ground breaking hit 'Dance To The Music'.

Active from 1966 to 1983, the band was pivotal in the development of soul, funk, and psychedelic music, they attracted a multi national following from Soul fans to Rock fans.

Headed by Sly Stone, and containing several of his family members and friends, the band was the first major American rock (soul, funk, psychedelic...) band to have an integrated lineup in both race and gender.

Oh, and the hair kinda grew longer and wider and taller after the release of 'dance to the music'.

This then is Sly and The family Stone, still in the ascendancy, on the 5th October 1968, at the Fillmore East in New York City. The recordings are of both Early and Late show.

Early Show:

1. Life
2. Color Me True
3. It Wont Be Long
4. Are You Ready
5. Dance To The Music - Music Lover
6. M'Lady

Late Show:

1. M'Lady
2. Life
3. Are You Ready
4. It Wont Be Long
5. Color Me True
6. Dance To The Music - Music Lover - Higher - Music Lover
7. Love City
8. Cant Turn You Loose
9. Outro (advice from Sly)

Both shows are mixed stereo soundboard at 256kbps, and excellent quality for 1968.

Arcade Fire - I-Day Festival 2010.

Reloaded 10/May/2015 - This is Arcade Fire in concert at the I-Day Festival in Bologna, Italy, back on the 2nd September 2010. The tour in support of the release of The Suburbs album was in my opinion their best yet and musically this is a very good example. However be warned, a rather annoying Italian DJ pops up on occasion practicing his skills (or inflating his ego even further) as this concert was broadcast live on FM and this recording sourced from that broadcast.

From wikipedia regarding recent events for the band - On January 13, 2011 it was announced that Arcade Fire would perform at the 53rd Grammy Awards in February 2011. The band was nominated for Grammy Awards in three categories: Album of the Year, Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal, and Best Alternative Music Album (for The Suburbs). Out of the three nominations, they won the award for Album of the Year.

At the 2011 BRIT Awards, "The Suburbs" won Best International Album, and Arcade Fire won the Award for Best International Group. In March 2011, Arcade Fire was honored at the Juno Awards of 2011. They won Group of the Year and Songwriter of the Year for "Ready To Start", "Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains)", and "We Used To Wait", all off "The Suburbs". "The Suburbs" also won Album of the Year and Alternative Album of the Year.

On April 19, 2011 it was announced that Arcade Fire will release a deluxe edition of their album The Suburbs featuring the short film Scenes from the Suburbs, by director Spike Jonze, as well as two new tracks, "Culture War" and "Speaking in Tongues" featuring David Byrne. Scenes from the Suburbs, which debuted at the Berlin International Film Festival 2011, has a running time of 30 minutes. The film screened at the SXSW Film Festival 2011 and saw its online premiere on MUBI on June 27, 2011. Writing for the Canadian Press, Nick Patch called the film "a sci-fi puzzler that seems to blend the paranoia of Terry Gilliam films with the nostalgia of classic Steven Spielberg flicks."

On June 16, the album was named as a longlisted nominee (one of 40) for the 2011 Polaris Music Prize. On July 6, the album was named as a shortlisted (one of 10) nominee for the 2011 award. On September 20, 2011, they were awarded the Polaris Prize.

2015 - Out Of Our Inbox - Edition Two

Welcome to our second new music round up for May 2015 and we begin with Brontosaurus. The song 'Safe To Surface' came my way a few days back without very much other information. A quick listen to the song had me wanting to know more and thankfully this was followed up by more detail on the band. A quote from 'redeyeChicago' makes my life easier they described the bands music as - "Combining disparate elements of folk, chamber pop, math rock and more, it’s difficult to pick up echoes of other acts, as the band’s music is wholly its own".

Brontosaurus add more to the story -  “Wail, and we might wake the dead” warns drummer/guitarist/vocalist Nicholas Kelley midway through Brontosaurus' second album, Our Animal Ways, but with all the menacing organ, fuzz-heavy bass and ground-rumbling percussion that's carefully littered throughout the record's forty-some minutes, this is much more of a promise than a warning. Along with keyboardist/guitarist/vocalist Nicholas Papaleo, these Chicagoans aren't putting on a clinic of guitar solos or punk-rock screaming matches. Our Animal Ways is not only a testament to tension and release, birth and death, or light and darkness, but a constantly shifting arc about what happens in between, and how one begets the other.

Our Animal Ways will be released on June 9 via People Of Paper. On the strength of the song below I look forward to hearing the whole album. Website HERE.

And we quote here - Danny Darko 'is an eclectic Italian artist, DJ, musician (electric/acoustic guitar, keyboards), producer. His productions cross a wide range of EDM styles, house, deep, electro, progressive and dubstep. With a constantly evolving sound, Darko continues to experiment with and cross over into various musical genres'.

Its fair to say the genres mentioned above do not get that much coverage on Beehive Candy, however I have to say I was really struck by just how good & how much I like the track featured below. Jova Radevska's vocals and the instrumentation from Danny Darko complement each other perfectly, a must listen I would say! Website: HERE.

Twin Graves recently released two new tracks - 'Politics' and 'Divorce'.

The promo had the following to the point words to say - After emerging last year with debut EP ‘Walk In Circles’ and singles ‘Love You To Death’ and ‘No Future’ Twin Graves return with two new tracks 'Politcs' and 'Divorce'.

Infused with 80’s post-punk romanticism and a feverish sense of rebellion 'Politics' and 'Divorce' are about beginnings and endings and most of all, change. The duo like to think of 'Politics' as their first proper love song, however there is much more to be found under the surface. It marks the beginning of something new but feeling cautious about it. In the same way, 'Divorce' is not as straight forward as it appears.  It's about being sick of someone else's blind nostalgia for something that isn't there anymore.  Divorce is about moving forward and leaving the past in the past. Twin Graves are - Jeremy Aris Polychronopoulos (vocals/guitar) and Zarah Lawless (vocals/bass/synth).

Politics does have something of a retro 80's feel to it, without the awful dated over production that cursed so many synth based songs from that era, that said it also has a fresh and vibrant feel and is worthy of a listen atleast!

========================================================================

OK at the beginning of April I received a concise message regarding Sean Kelly and a song called '57 Chevy' which said the following - Growing up in California, Sean Kelly split his time between Venice and Sacramento. His musical influences range from Sublime, Slightly Stoopid, Rebelution and Slick Rick, Big L, E-40 to Jeff Buckley, The Doobie Brothers and Supertramp. After learning the musical stylings of Michael Jackson, Prince and Otis Redding, Sean came up with his own style of music that incorporates the California surf and beach sound. "57 Chevy" is the follow up to the debut single "Hands In The Sky," which received airplay in the U.S., Ireland, Germany, China, South Africa, Peru and Australia.

Loads of 'names' mentioned however, it's a fine track and just as the message told me they would allow the music to do the talking, I fancy I will do the same.

========================================================================

Irontom next and we are advised - critically acclaimed LA art-rockers Irontom will embark on a spring tour with Awolnation and Family of the Year. Irontom have a similar sense of ecstatic energy to what Arctic Monkeys possessed early in their careers.” In the recent Guitar World premiere of their cover of the Gorillaz hit “Feel Good Inc.,” Irontom front-man Harry Hayes summarized his views on the band’s off-kilter approach: “We feel like we're progressing all the time. We’re genuinely not worried about fitting in.” Irontom’s music is something you passionately wear on your sleeve -  not dispassionately slip into your back pocket for a convenient conversation piece. According to Charlie Sheen, who makes a cameo in the “Minista” video, Irontom are “like Led Zeppelin and the Beatles had a baby, and it was raised by wolves."

Tour dates with Awolnation & Family of the Year
May 27 @ Neptune Theater, Seattle, WA
May 28 @ Commodore Room, Vancouver, BC
May 29 @ Roseland, Portland, OR
May 30 @ McDonald Theatre, Eugene, OR
June 2 @ The Catalyst, Santa Cruz, CA
June 3 @ House of Blues, San Diego, CA
June 5 @ Aztec Theater, San Antonio, TX
June 6 @ Diamond Ballroom, Oklahoma City, OK
June 9 @ Iron City, Birmingham, AL
June 10 @ House of Blues, New Orleans, LA
June 12 @ House of  Blues, North Myrtle Beach, SC
June 13 @ The Tabernacle, Atlanta, GA

As for the music, this is a really great track.

Finally this time around I could not leave this out even though it came our way a few weeks back. The UK's Postcards From Jeff shared the beautiful song 'Suburban Girl'.  The words that came with it say - From the windswept valleys of a very British countryside to pastel hued dreams of Hollywood darlings, Suburban Girl - the brand new track taken from the forthcoming debut album of Yorkshire producer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Postcards from Jeff - further explores a love of Lynchian style, in particular, Twin Peaks’ tragic heroine Laura Palmer.

“It’s about the projection of fantasy; getting lost in the worlds of people we watch on the silver screen, obsession, glamour, and desire,” reveals Postcards From Jeff alter ego Joss Worthington. “It references being mesmerised by someone and the ideas you project onto them.

Taken from the forthcoming debut album 'Modern Language' due out in July, this is a great song to finish of this round up! Website HERE.
