Gwenno - Wylderness - Lawn Chair - The Bones of J.R. Jones - Sourwood - T. Hardy Morris

Gwenno - Y Gath.

"Ghostly and addictive, "Y Gath" sounds like spectral feline poetry being delivered at a midnight pagan gathering".  Sung in Gwenno's native Welsh, it comes ahead of her English-language release Utopia (out July 11 via Heavenly). We have already featured two tracks from the forthcoming album and have been very impressed by them both and this latest release is equally as gorgeous, these are some real teases ahead of the album.

As mentioned before... Forty-three years into her life, Saunders has been many people. The disaffected Cardiff schoolgirl; the teenage Las Vegas dancer; the singer in indie pop group The Pipettes. There was a turn in a Bollywood film, a nightclub tour, a stint cleaning floors in an East London pub. Long before she would become an acclaimed solo songwriter in both Welsh and Cornish, a winner of the Welsh Music Prize, a nominee for the Mercury, a Bard of the Cornish Gorsedh, there were the days of Nevada, London, Brighton; of Irish dancing, techno clubs, messiness and chaos.

'Utopia', Saunders’ fourth solo album, is an extraordinary exploration of all of these selves. If the singer regards her first three solo records — 2014’s Y Dydd Olaf, 2018’s Le Kov and 2022’s Tresor as “childhood records”, rooted in her upbringing, her parents, her formative identity, then Utopia captures a time of self-determination and experimentation. These are songs of discovery, of the years between being someone’s daughter and becoming someone’s wife and someone’s mother. They range from floor-fillers to piano ballads, via contributions from Cate Le Bon and H. Hawkline, and encompass William Blake, a favourite Edrica Huws poem, and the Number 73 bus. It is her finest work to date.

Wylderness - Safe Mode (EP).

Cardiff Indie-gaze band 'Wylderness' release their brand new and highly anticipated EP 'Safe Mode' via digital streaming platforms. The concept for this EP is reimagining the software and tech boom of the 90s. But instead of being centred on the west coast of America, it takes place in the south coast of Wales. Opening track Big Idea is a song about weighing up the pros and cons of different locations –whether that’s looking for a place to live, joining a cultural scene or where to base your dotcom business in the 90s. The message is that sometimes taking a cold logical approach doesn’t work and you have to go with your heart. This is the only song title on the EP that doesn’t reference the weather, but the rain does get a mention in the first verse (“So what’s the big idea / To find a place that’s near / And keep our raincoats on”).

Is It Summer? This started out as a riff with loads of delay played on an old Vox amp we found where we were practicing. We then jammed about and it developed into a song in two parts. It has a cinematic quality in the first half with hints of Interpol. It reflects the wild west nature of the 90s tech boom. Then it erupts in the second half and outro (“Stand up count everything / If you want to / If you want to”).

Sun Scream This is our Pavement meets Super Furry Animals song –it’s a bit loose, has some unexpected instrumentation, and a psych-folk middle eight. The opening lines and melody came to Dan in a flash of inspiration (“Maybe she was born with it / Maybe it was Maybelline”) and the song took off from there. To date we have not received a cease and desist letter from a major cosmetics firm.

What Happens To The Rain This is the closer to the EP and really it’s another two songs in one. The title could be a question or a statement. The first half has a Real Estate vibe and the second half goes in a more trippy Brian Jonestown direction. It’s a song about going back to where you grew up, retracing memories and finding that they don’t quite add up to how you remember them (“Seeing faces you had forgotten / Crying for no-one / Recollections made of concrete / Fade in the sun”).

Lawn Chair - Waste Your Potential!

German-American indie punk outfit Lawn Chair is set to make waves with their highly anticipated debut album, You Want It! You Got It!, slated for release on September 5th, 2025. This week the Berlin-based outfit return with their electrifying new single ‘Waste Your Potential!’, a track that channels the restless energy of confronting a life that didn’t turn out as planned. Fierce, distorted guitars crash into buzzing synthesizers to create a tense, cathartic soundscape that nods to the jagged edge of acts like Shelf Lives - unleashing a track as emotionally charged as it is sonically unrelenting.

The single is accompanied by a striking and surreal music video, featuring a gang of vampires navigating the quiet monotony of farm life while secretly longing for the thrill of the night. It’s a tongue-in-cheek meditation on desire, domesticity, and the wildness we’re taught to repress.

For three years, Lawn Chair has been a vital force in the German indie scene, captivating audiences with their dynamic sound. Their previous two EPs, crafted in collaboration with producers Olaf Opal (The Notwist) and Chris Coady (Beach House, Yeah Yeah Yeahs), solidified their reputation as one of the most exciting acts in Germany. With countless gigs across the country, a successful tour in the UK, and unforgettable performances alongside bands like Sleaford Mods and DeadLetter, as well as at festivals like Reeperbahn and Fusion, the band has proven their staying power.

Written during a time of personal and creative transition, You Want It! You Got It! was crafted between November 2023 and September 2024, with extensive pre-production shaping its unique sound. The album’s title, a lyric drawn from the new single, is a tongue-in-cheek response to the relentless demands of the music industry. Lyrically and sonically, the album draws inspiration from the absurdities of late-stage capitalism, fragile male egos, the never-ending quest for inner peace - and front woman Claudia Schlutius’s own complicated relationship with both her family and her U.S. origins.

The Bones of J.R. Jones - Start Again.

New York-based artist The Bones of J.R. Jones shares “Start Again,” the final single released ahead of his sixth studio album Radio Waves, out June 20 via Tone Tree Music. An ode to breaking old relationship patterns and bettering the way we show up for ourselves and others, the song arrives with a music video that stitches together behind-the-scenes moments from his nearly sold-out European tour.

About the new song, The Bones of J.R. Jones (a.k.a. Jonathon Linaberry) says: “There's a repetition and restraint to our lives and relationships that I think we all subscribe to to survive.  We fall into patterns of comfort and norm. Healthy or unhealthy, it doesn't really matter. The usual arguments. The usual blowbacks. The mutual attempts to understand the other's side: that's what I was trying to express in ‘Start Again.’”

On the video: “The talented Mike D'Alton (Seba Safe) shot this footage over three weeks of touring Europe. I was lucky enough to spend the better part of every day with Patrick Blaney, Conchur White and Mike as we managed to not get lost, sick or arrested. Only one of us got punched (that's a win). Any touring musician will tell you it takes a special crew to hold it together on tour. I know there are probably thousands of touring videos out there, but when I look at this one, I really do feel the love — the relentlessness, the exhaustion and the pure joy and chaos of a successful show.”

Sourwood - Wrong Carolina.

Following their debut release "On the Road," progressive bluegrass collective Sourwood returns with "Wrong Carolina," a rhythmically complex and narratively playful second single that blurs the lines between heartbreak and highway maps. The track explores the chaos of mistaken direction – both geographically and emotionally – fueled by one of the band's most memorable musical arrangements to date.

"It started with this story [that bandmate Liam Lewis] told me," says frontman Lucas Last, recalling a tour mix-up where Liam's band mistakenly arrived at a South Carolina venue – only to find out they were booked at a bar of the same name in North Carolina. "He was also going through a rough patch with someone named Caroline, so I just mashed those together: wrong place, wrong time, wrong person."

The song's namesake, "Wrong Carolina," plays with the ambiguity of place and person, letting the title line hit with layered meaning. “We wanted the lyric to feel deliberately unclear – 'I was in the wrong, Carolina' vs. 'I was literally in the wrong Carolina,'" Lucas explains. "It's simple, but the ambiguity is where the real emotional weight is."

Produced by Roman Marcone and engineered by Danny Smart, the song also showcases Sourwood's willingness to push sonic boundaries. From phasers on banjo to ambient textures more common in indie rock than bluegrass, the track embraces experimentation. "When I came back to hear the mix, Danny had added all these weird effects. Roman looked nervous, like maybe he'd gone too far," Lucas laughs. "But I loved it. It was the first time I'd ever heard a banjo run through a phaser and just said, 'Let's go with that.'"

T. Hardy Morris - Juvenile Years.

T. Hardy Morris will release Artificial Tears on August 8, 2025 via the New West Records imprint Normaltown Records. The 12-song set was produced & mixed by Carl Broemel of My Morning Jacket and follows Morris’ 2021 album The Digital Age of Rome, met at the time with critical acclaim. The album’s first single, “Juvenile Years.” is a bittersweet song and reaches back for memories of a simpler time and place that hang just out of reach. Morris says, “‘Juvenile Years’ is a song somewhat specific to Athens, GA and the live local music scene as I came up in it. It was often a whirlwind of intense bonds over music and what one another was creating. Some of the relationships survive & carry on and some have passed like a strange song, but all were and are meaningful to who I am now.”

Artificial Tears is an electrifying work of existential exploration. It is a raw, rock and roll reflection on meaning and identity in a modern world that’s simultaneously more connected and isolated than ever before. The performances are blissed-out and hazy, captured primarily on a four-track machine, and Morris’ delivery is subtle and understated to match, fueled by tumbling, stream-of-consciousness lyrics rooted in a dreamy sense of longing and nostalgia. Despite the weighty ruminations at its core, the result is a remarkably grounded, down to earth album that’s at once honest and abstract, a poignant, clear-eyed look in the mirror from a master craftsman committed to his work for nothing more—and nothing less—than its own intrinsic value.

In typical fashion for Morris, the songs came slowly at first, then all at once in a rush as he reflected on two decades of highs and lows, on the joys and struggles of a life in music. When it came time to record, he called on Broemel, who ended up not only producing, but playing the vast majority of the instruments on the album. “Hardy’s got a really direct and honest approach to music—and to life—which was refreshing,” says Broemel. “He likes to work fast and not get too precious about things.”

Lawn Chair - The Next Big Thing.

German indie punk outfit Lawn Chair is set to make waves with their highly anticipated debut album, You Want It! You Got It!, slated for release later this year. Following their return with ‘Fancy Car, Girlfriend and the Big House’, the band now drops their new single, ‘The Next Big Thing’, a biting reflection on self-optimisation, ambition, and the often absurd pursuit of success in the music industry.

‘The Next Big Thing’, showcases a new sonic direction for Lawn Chair. A pulsating bassline leads the charge as the band experiments with electronic-infused drum patterns and stripped-back guitars. Claudia Schlutius’ lyrics paint a wry picture of the pressures of self-improvement and the relentless chase for fame - echoing the false promises of an industry that thrives on ambition but offers no guarantees.

Inspired by the absurdity of late-stage capitalism, fragile male egos, Schlutius’ complicated relationship with her US roots and the eternal pursuit of happiness, the album blends playful experimentation with raw energy, making it Lawn Chair’s most daring work yet.

Dog Park - Kaleidoscope.

Over the past three years, Dog Park has documented the various stages of its debut album Festina Lente. To mark the album's first anniversary, the Kaleidoscope video captures the moments that welded the band together, from recording in the studio to their first festivals. Against a backdrop of Atlantic rooftops, the question “Have you seen the world outside?”.

Sometimes, it takes a series of coincidences for four individuals to meet and become a band. Erica is American, Isabella is Brazilian, and Sarah and Jean are from Paris. It's at a venue in Paris in 2021 that they get to know each other. As they quickly bond together in the excitement generated by a situation of overcoming a crisis, the urge to play music together arises.

Because they all know how to play multiple instruments and have a desire for freedom, they naturally play musical chairs from the start. This is what makes their quartet unique: instruments and microphones change hands from one track to the next.

A particularly surprising and impressive dance to observe in concert, which a wide audience has already experienced. Despite having released only two singles in the fall of 2022 and spring of 2023, Dog Park has secured stages such as La Boule Noire or the Auditorium of the Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris, as well as several summer festivals across France.

Of their new single, 'Vicious Cycles', Cook says: “The single is about addressing your patterns of behaviour and the damage done in previous relationships. The fear of retribution for the smallest of hiccups that sticks with you long after the impacting relationship is done ‘Can’t wash off the oil from your spill.’ The thought that you’ll never fully shake it off.”

SUSTO - Burning Jacobs Ladder - Melody Moko - Lawn Chair - Holly Henderson

SUSTO - My Entire Life.

SUSTO will return with My Entire Life July 28 via New West Records. The 12-song set was produced by Wolfgang Zimmerman (Band of Horses) and SUSTO’s Justin Osborne and Johnny Delaware. My Entire Life follows their critically acclaimed 2021 album Time in the Sun which Holler said “provides proof that Osborne and his bandmates are an important voice in today’s conflicted world,” while No Depression called it a “fluid and engaging listen.” Ink 19 said “It’s a great example of SUSTO’s ability to create true lyrical and musical masterpieces so fresh you simply cannot turn it off” while the Bitter Southerner named it one of “The Best Southern Albums of 2021.”

A season of drastic change is what brought SUSTO frontman Justin Osborne to the band’s new album. There was a divorce, difficulties re-building his band after the pandemic, and the pain and helplessness of witnessing family members struggle with addiction and mental illness. Despite these challenges, Justin ultimately found himself in a new landscape, with new love and a deeper perspective, all of which is masterfully projected into My Entire Life. As a whole, the album documents Justin’s personal journey through highs and lows in his life, with many of the details on full display. He narrates the demise and aftermath of an almost decade long relationship, while celebrating the joy of falling in love, and the hopefulness of starting over.

The video for the album’s title track and lead single, “My Entire Life,” is a song with an urgency “to keep living.” Director Luke Pilgrim says, “We at Sozo Bear Films ventured into the relatively unknown world of AI art. We took inspiration from the lyrics, SUSTO’s entire catalog, as well as Justin’s previous musical endeavors to create visuals that represent themes from his entire life. We used stable diffusion to create a mind-bending psychedelic experience. Stable Diffusion is a type of deep learning generative neural network with the ability to prompt, render and process AI imagery.”

Burning Jacobs Ladder - Fickle Bones.

Following the release of his debut EP EP/1 in 2021, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Jake T Johnson’s project Burning Jacobs Ladder has just released the long-anticipated single ‘Fickle Bones.’ Hailing from the Gold Coast, swinging dark Spaghetti Western melodies infused with hauntingly passionate vocals of Jake, ‘Fickle Bones’ is an eerily familiar track. The unwavering rumble of drums, soaring guitar licks and a looming chorus of vocals hang in the air.

Stripped to raw reality and bare bones, Jake’s authentically emotional storytelling surpasses his lyricism as ‘Fickle Bones’ sounds unearthly. Winding through the single, each component brews, creating an all-encompassing tale between a young man and child.

Throughout his catalogue, Burning Jacobs Ladder delves into very personal discussions about mental health, escapism, and anxiety and 'Fickle Bones' is no exception. Regarding the single, Jake states: “It’s the emotional burden people carry on their shoulders from past experiences. It’s becoming numb to extremes, emotional detachment and living a life for someone else when they can’t.”

Widely received by the likes of The Music, Scenestr, AAA Backstage and The Live Wire to name a few, the experimental powerhouse has put in the work. Written, performed, mixed, and mastered entirely by himself, Jake’s project Burning Jacobs Ladder shows his immense talent and wide skillset as a recording engineer and singer-songwriter.

Melody Moko - Ain't What You Used to Be.

“Ain’t What You Used to Be” sees Melody reacquaint herself with her inner rock attitude and channel it into a biting, Americana anthem. “First of all - the guitars on this track slay! They are probably the best guitar parts on any Melody Moko song ever”,says Melody. “I’d been listening to an intense amount of Sheryl Crow here, you can hear it”.

Recorded in Nashville and completed in Brisbane, “Ain’t What You Used to Be”, features the incomparable Jen Mize on the sweetest harmony vocal which not only turns the song on its head but blends oh so beautifully with those Sheryl-esque guitars.

In the song, Melody calls out a woman who disregards the feelings and concerns of others in order to get what she wants. And the big question – is it about anyone in particular? “It’s not! It’s actually about a fictionalised version of a future self who lets ego get the best of her”, says Melody.

Lawn Chair - I Can Change.

German-American art punk band Lawn Chair have released their new EP, Eat The Beans and Wear The Jeans. To celebrate the release, they have also shared a brand new music video for EP focus track 'I Can Change'.

Ever since their stage debut in late 2021, Lawn Chair have relentlessly rehearsed, recorded and played shows, including appearances at showcase festivals such as Reeperbahn and Waves Vienna. The band, fronted by Seattle-born Claudia Schlutius, has quickly gained recognition in the German indie scene with a guitar-driven energetic sound, Schlutius’ powerful stage presence and meticulous songwriting. A string of punchy singles have so far garnered the group early support from the likes of BBC Radio 6 Music and DIY as well as comparisons to bands like Gustaf & Bodega.

After releasing a self-produced debut EP in the spring of 2022, Lawn Chair returned to the studio in the autumn to record their follow-up. Eat The Beans And Wear The Jeans! was recorded with the help of esteemed producer Olaf Opal  (The Notwist) and L.A.-based mixer Chris Coady (Beach House, Future Islands, TV On The Radio), who helped take the songs to the next level. The new songs present a new and interesting twist to timeless topics like unrequited love, the despondent boredom growing up in the countryside and the hardships of show business. With this new EP Lawn Chair are underscoring their rightful ambitions to a much larger audience.

Atmospheric ballad and new single ‘I Can Change’ offers a tempo switch from the bands previous offerings. Drenched in gorgeous reverb, words of self-doubt echo through a monotonous beat interwoven with tasteful melodies only to later culminate in an otherworldly epic Radiohead meets Sonic Youth guitar drop.

======================================================================

Holly Henderson - Head Full of Soil.

London based Holly Henderson returns again with the fourth single from her critically acclaimed sophomore album “The Walls”. “Headfull Of Soil” is an infectious vintage sounding gem that wraps the listener in a hazy dream. With quirky harpsichord break downs and soaring harmonies, the track blends ethereal folk with psychedelic explorations to great effect. It’s a breezy ear-tingling affair that will make you want to return straight away for more.

“I wrote Head Full Of Soil about the way we convince ourselves that everything is fine, when it is in fact, fantasy”, says Henderson. “The more we pack in the soil, the deeper we bury the delusions. As the song progresses a flower never blooms - but it may, at the right time.” she explains.

The song is reminiscent of a wild garden, layers of vocals, harpsichord, guitars, bass, percussion - tamed only by the way they weave tightly together, in a vibrant burst of whimsical Sunshine Pop sensibilities. Synths wash over as the rain comes, and the song reveals paths we couldn’t have predicted as it descends into a river of colour.

While her debut album, “Monday Green” featured Henderson’s impressive rock guitar work and alternative pop anthem prowess, “The Walls” shows a more introspective, and slightly more delicate side to her songcraft. Recorded in a farmhouse in the English countryside, Henderson’s new album brings her full circle from her previous Los Angeles recorded album. Finely crafted arrangements, sonic musings, and playful themes take us on a journey with Henderson as she deconstructs her Brit Pop and classic influences and reassembles them into progressive-folk wonderment.

Lawn Chair - Lanterns On The Lake - Dutch Uncles - Orchard Sky

Lawn Chair - Punkrock Band.

Ever since their stage debut in late 2021, German-American art punk band Lawn Chair have relentlessly rehearsed, recorded and played shows, including appearances at showcase festivals such as Reeperbahn and Waves Vienna. The band, fronted by Seattle-born Claudia Schlutius, has quickly gained recognition in the German indie scene with a guitar-driven energetic sound, Schlutius’ powerful stage presence and meticulous songwriting. Last month, the band released ‘Sunset Heartbreak’, a single that has garnered the group early support from the likes of BBC Radio 6 Music and DIY as well as comparisons to bands like Gustaf & Bodega.

On their new single ‘Punkrock Band’ Claudia Schlutius says: “Don’t we all sometimes just want to start a band and live the glamorous life of rock stars cruising the streams of showbiz? Probably not, which is why the maddeningly cheerful acoustic guitars in all their glory of the 90s contrast the ambition the lyrics provide. Looking at you Michael Stipe,” she continues.

Lanterns On The Lake - String Theory.

With their much-anticipated new album Versions Of Us due out June 2nd via Bella Union, Lanterns On The Lake now reveal their epic new single, “String Theory”. With Radiohead’s Philip Selway delivering a bravura performance on drums and vocalist singer Hazel Wilde one of her most powerful vocal turns, the track is arguably the dynamic standout from this career-best album.

Commenting on the track singer and songwriter Hazel Wilde says: “String Theory is a song about reflecting on what might have been and might, in some way, still be. It finds beauty and solace in the multiverse theory and the idea that out there somewhere, vibrating on their own frequency, exists another fully realized version of yourself where your story turned out differently.”

Lanterns On The Lake previously released the single “The Likes Of Us” and also recently shared a stunning live version of the track recorded at The Old Church in Northumberland.

Dutch Uncles - Damascenes.

Dutch Uncles, Manchester’s much-revered electro art rock quartet, have just released their long-awaited sixth album, True Entertainment, via Memphis Industries to widespread worldwide acclaim. Album standout "Damascenes" is this week released as a single alongside a new visualiser with behind the scenes studio footage, coinciding with the announcement of further tour dates and a headline slot at this year's Twisterella Festival in Middlesbrough.

"Damascenes" marries future funk synth vibes with a truly magnificent vocal from Duncan Wallis (with added BV's from Everything Everything's Jonathan Higgs). Lyrically, it borrows from The Simpsons, specifically an episode where Lisa considers that angels might indeed exist after visiting an archeology exhibition...

Vocalist/lyricist Duncan Wallis discussed the lyrical inspiration behind the song: "This definitely felt like the song we broke ground for the album with. The demo is worlds, if not galaxies, away from the finished product musically speaking (electric drums provided the only rhythm as I recall, and not a guitar in sight, just synths), and lyrically I found myself right at the beginning again, clumsily trying to straddle two ideas: one Simpsons based, the other personal; both of which were just too righteous to give up.

"On the one hand, I could retell the story of Lisa Simpson coming round to the possible existence of Angels after discovering a skeleton on an archaeology exhibition. "At the same time I could journal a weekend away of soul searching in Glasgow, beginning and ending in its transcendent Central Railway station (there is indeed a piano in there – or was at least), which was topped off by a chance encounter with the then leader of the Labour party, Jeremy Corbyn, just days before the election was determined on the way home. A truly life affirming scenario and one hell of a hangover cure."

Orchard Sky - Rollin' 7's (Live).

Blurring the lines between Southern Rock, Soul and Country, Orchard Sky's fresh new sound comes from a combination of Krystle Dos Santos's powerful vocals, and the hard driving work of lead guitarist Mitch Smith and bassist Andreas Wegner.

Dually based in Vancouver and Edmonton, Orchard Sky’s self-titled debut EP -- out now on all digital platforms -- includes their latest single “Rollin’ 7s” (featuring Clayton Bellamy of the Road Hammers), a blend of lipstick, dynamite and the roll of the dice. Already finding a home at Canadian Country Radio, “Rollin’ 7s” is a foot-stomping track that demands turning the dial up to eleven.

It follows on the heels of Orchard Sky’s 2022 single “Canadian Party Song” an instant country-rock anthem that Rogers SportsNet deployed as a the soundtrack to last year’s NHL playoff series between the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames. As SportsNet Music Supervisor Carson Illidge said, “It makes my job very easy when I’m pitched such great songs. This one’s a ripper.” Along with other heart-pumping tracks such as “Flashbang” and “Honest,” Orchard Sky’s EP delivers a sound guaranteed to fire up your soul.

Since Smith and Wegner teamed with Dos Santos early in 2022, everything has fallen into place. What Krystle brought to the band was not only her stunning voice, but also a creative energy that she’s previously displayed as a solo artist and stage performer. Along with earning two Western Canadian Music Awards, she has appeared in productions of Dreamgirls, The Chelsea Hotel: The Songs Of Leonard Cohen, and her own cabaret-style musical, Hey Viola!, a tribute to Canadian Civil Rights heroine Viola Desmond.
