Selve - Breaking Outta Heaven (EP).

Multi-award-winning Gold Coast (Yugambeh/Kombumerri)-based alternative six-piece Selve, led by proud Jabirr Jabirr man Loki Liddle release Breaking Outta Heaven, the companion EP to their history-making, internationally praised 2025 album Breaking Into Heaven: the first LP by an Aboriginal artist ever to be recorded at Abbey Road Studios. The EP - featuring focus track 'Run Boy Run' expands the album's prismatic universe with adventurous new colours and thrilling spaces in the band's uniquely playful-yet-esoteric way.

Liddle explains, "we broke into heaven [which] may indeed just be a big old trap we’ll need to wrestle our way out of in the end". Also including previous singles 'Creature of the Night' and 'Desire', the EP draws from Liddle's own book release earlier this week Damn Good Television out now via Magabala Books. Another stop on the Selve sonic rollercoaster EP focus track 'Run Boy Run' chugs breathlessly along a dark bassline with a mysterious-yet-heroic, cinematic energy almost akin to the anime intros the band grew up loving, featuring flourishes of 80s-esque synth-pop that shifts irregularly into verse and chorus; all made rewardingly earnest with Liddle's soaring vocals.

Lyrically dense and somewhat of a cousin to 2025 album focus 'Leading Man Lost'; the track digs further into the Breaking Outta Heaven EP's themes of getting lost in the sauce, the pursuit of big dreams, the subversion of the cult of celebrity while echoing one of the project's core sentiments “You said it’s made of matter, I said it’s made of love” - and, as Liddle so esoterically explains, "the idea that we all might die waiting for our train to come - another reminder that our desire can be our liberation and our cage. And that it takes art to walk that line with grace".

J Schlueter - The Other Mile (Album).

Jörn Schlüter has been recording his songs for his band Someday Jacob for twelve years. Fifty-five songs, four albums, one EP. A new album by the Bremen/Hamburg Americana band is in the works. But something else is happening first – Schlüter has made a solo album. At the beginning of 2024, a repertoire unexpectedly emerged from nowhere. "Normally I first have one song from which the entire album flows," says Schlüter, "but these songs came in one go. They hung together like a flock of chickens that someone forgot in the fields they needed a home."

These songs were written during a moment of crisis – Schlüter spent a lot of time with an old acquaintance – anxiety. "She's a good friend, but sometimes she stays too long," he says, "like the last guest at a party who doesn't understand that the hosts want to go to bed. It took a while to make that clear to her." Such challenging times are part of Schlüter's biography. He is familiar with them and wants to see them as an invitation to integrate what has not yet been integrated.

That's how you can grow. Not so much to become better, faster, fitter and more productive. But in such a way that you get one step closer to yourself. The songs on "The Other Mile" reflect such considerations. "For me, songwriting is like a milky mirror," says Schlüter, "I polish it until I can recognize myself – or at least the part of me that the song is about. You put something of yourself out there so that others can do something with. Perhaps they see themselves in it."

In the fall of 2024, the songwriter called two friends to record the resulting music. Matthias Meusel, who is best known for being Roger Cicero's drummer for 20 years. Stephan Gade, who plays with Niels Frevert and sometimes with Udo Lindenberg. During the crisis Schlüter listened to Neil Young's 1974 album "Comes A Time" on repeat. He realized that he wanted similarly reduced arrangements for the new songs. Drums, bass, acoustic guitars. "I felt something gentle, but also something rooted," Schlüter describes, "in my head it was always Matthias and Stephan playing these songs."

Federal Lights - Celebration of Failure (Album).

A full decade after intentionally disbanding, Federal Lights return better than ever, with their new (and third) album Celebration of Failure, (Aporia Records), which was released yesterday June 19th. Starting in 2010, Jean-Guy Roy built his band Federal Lights slowly, stubbornly, with a lot of himself in it. From Winnipeg, they carved a sound and a following that crossed oceans. They toured Germany. They made records that mattered. They stood on stages in cities that had no reason to care and made them care. Roy had a vision of what Federal Lights should be, but somewhere along the way, by 2016, the distance between that and the reality became too heavy to carry – not because the band had failed, but because he’d decided it had. Roy turned off all the Federal Lights: social media accounts, gone; the digital footprint of years, deleted; all of it vanishing into the ether.

Eventually, Roy found that he couldn’t delete the part of himself that needs to make music, any more than he could delete a lung. In the post-band silence, he didn’t find relief, but absence. Eventually, the absence asked, “Now what?” The answer was a reckoning, not a resurrection. Roy turned the Federal Lights back on.

The result, Celebration of Failure, offers deep, authentic explorations of the vulnerable emotional states encountered on this long journey of destruction and rebuilding. Deploying few but well-chosen words in each song, Federal Lights move through desperation, obsession, depression, escape, defeat, loss, and ultimately, redemption through choice. The sound is anthemic, atmospheric rock – with compelling synth and treated-electric-guitar textures – that would fit neatly on a playlist beside Radiohead, Brian Eno, and Arcade Fire.

HMS Morris - Bwletin Brys.

This summer HMS Morris will be releasing their first new music since 2023's Dollar Lizard Money Zombie. Their new single is called Bwletin Brys, a driving, angular, sci-fi frolic about eco-aliens taking over the management of Earth. It combines a gritty drums/bass/guitar rhythm section with inter-galactic vocal processing and a dazzling range of blipdy-blops. Its effect has been described as 'comparable to having your brain smashed out by a slice of lemon wrapped around a large gold brick'. "It's Sparks x Adult DVD, channeled through a 21st century woman raised in Carmarthenshire."

Bwletin Brys ('Emergency Transmission') begins with an overwhelmingly powerful spaceship settling in Earth's orbit and transmitting the message that humans' mismanagement of the planet will no longer be tolerated. The normal wake-up calls in a case like this (climate instability and species loss) have effectively been ignored. Even dispatching one of their agents to lead the human counter-movement (Greta Thunberg) has proved ineffective. Regime change is the appropriate next step.

The song channels the lightness and glee of Hitchhikers Guide, but the rapid leap forward in artificial intelligence technology over the last few years brings an element of urgency to the questions raised. Would we be better off if human's weren't in charge? Should we be happy to hand over control of Earth to a species/entity that prioritizes ecological harmony over cheap smartphones and beef?

Uncle Lucius - Election Day.

Phosphorescent - If I Could Only Fly.

Lost Art Records has just announced a new Blaze Foley tribute album "Sittin' with Blaze" with a double single by Uncle Lucius covering "Election Day" and Phosphorescent's version of "If I Could Only Fly." The compilation includes new recordings by Phosphorescent, Willie Watson, Lucy Dacus, Cactus Lee, Dylan Earl, Uncle Lucius, Riley Downing, Joshua Ray Walker, Twain, Angela Autumn, John R. Miller, John Moreland, and Lucinda Williams. The album will be released digitally on August 7, 2026 with a physical release to follow in the fall.

Sittin’ With Blaze showcases an assemblage of thirteen contemporary songwriters covering classic early Blaze recordings from his ‘tree house’ days in Georgia. Those recordings were originally released by Lost Art Records as Sittin’ by the Road in 2010 culled from demos recorded by Blaze in the mid-1970s.

At the time of Blaze’s tragic murder in 1989 he was little known outside of Austin’s renegade songwriter circles. He is now revered among the pantheon of Texas’ great songwriters. Townes Van Zandt and Lucinda Willliams both penned moving tributes to Blaze and his songs been covered by John Prine, Merle Haggard, Lyle Lovett, Billy Strings, and Willie Nelson.  This project's goal is to share Blaze’s music with a new audience who appreciates masterful songwriting.

Writer Joe Nick Patoski, who contributed the liner notes to the forthcoming release writes, “The songs Blaze created resonate and ring truer than ever. The hallmark of a great song is outliving its author. In Blaze’s case, there’s a whole catalog of songs like that.”

Ben Reel - Selve - Dubinator Curate Various Artists - Tiberius

Ben Reel - I Will.

The first single, “I Will,” is lifted from Ben Reel’s keenly awaited 12th studio album, “Spirit’s not Broken.” It's just been released. We are really pleased to be sharing this fabulous song from a highly talented multi genre artist! We are told (and agree with) “I Will” carries a ’70s soul vibe reminiscent of Marvin Gaye, with four-on-the-floor disco drums and a Motown-inspired moving bass line. The song tells its story as if guided by higher powers, as though everything were preordained, destiny awaiting.

The Irish troubadour's twelfth studio album, Spirit’s Not Broken has a core message. In a world marked by war, division, and uncertainty, the record carries a timeless message: hope, resilience, and above all, love. “It’s easy to feel powerless,” Ben says, “but this album is a reminder of a simple truth: ‘Love one another.”

Musically, the album opens with raw rock energy before flowing into soulful, R&B-infused grooves, echoing the spirit of Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, Van Morrison, and Sting. It’s a journey that blends grit with grace, reinforcing Ben’s reputation as one of Ireland’s most versatile and enduring songwriters.

Since launching his solo career in 1999 with This Is the Movie, Ben has carved a distinctive path through rock, folk, soul, and Americana. Critics have compared him to John Hiatt, Roy Orbison, and even dubbed him “the Irish Springsteen,” yet his sound remains unmistakably his own.

Selve - Breaking Into Heaven (Album).

In a few words, we have to say we love this bands music, the whole album is a must hear, this is a band to thoroughly check out. The background goes like this.. Gold Coast (Yugambeh/Kombumerri)-based six-piece Selve led by proud Jabirr Jabirr man Loki Liddle yesterday shared their historic second album Breaking Into Heaven, the first full-length album by an Aboriginal artist ever recorded at London's Abbey Road, anchored and inspired by Nina Simone's words that "‘The people who built their heaven on your land, are telling you that yours is in the sky".

A powerful testament of First Nations stories, music and culture breaking into the spaces that have been stolen or denied to them and traditionally reserved for the select few, Breaking Into Heaven punctuates and refracts the listener's consciousness like a glass brick through a window: a showcase of the uniquely prismatic range of Selve's sonic and cinematic universe, all tied together with a central dualism of subversion and love.

With it comes swaggering focus track & video 'Leading Man Lost', its clip starring Indigenous Australian actress/model Charlee Fraser (Mad Max: Furiosa, Anyone But You). Also featuring previous singles lush post-nihilist lovesong 'Friday Night', moody rave-rock track 'Strange Romance', the hyper-camp 'Loki Horror Picture Show', and its roaring title track, Breaking Into Heaven is out independently now.

Of the album, Liddle shares: "It’s super surreal that Breaking Into Heaven is out in the world, less than a year since we wrapped up our recording at Abbey Road. It’s been a big, profound, emotional journey that has taken myself and the band to places and into spaces we never imagined we’d get to tread. I am really really proud of the album we’ve created, the music, the stories, the messages, the whole wild dream of it."

Tiberius - Moab.

Boston-based "Farm Emo" band Tiberius issues "Moab," the third single from November 14th's ‘Troubadour,’ their label debut album. Following the more frantic Emo Rock sounds of the "Sag" and "Felt" singles, the rustic warmth of "Moab" sees Tiberius embrace their Country and Folk influences, while still flirting with Pop melodies and an Indie Rock crunch.

Tiberius was originally a solo outing for songwriter Brendan Wright, with the project growing to a four-piece band upon Wright's relocation to Boston. As demonstrated on "Moab," this expanded lineup produces a catchy and cacophonous sound that blends Indie Punk, Alt Country and Psychedelia with confessional, conversational lyrics.

Named after the city in the sprawling Colorado Plateau desert, "Moab" has long been a live favorite, and now offers our third preview of 'Troubadour,' a unique, genre-bending LP that's bursting with ideas and ambition. Alt Country-esque songs like "Moab" meet the Midwest Emo of "Sag," the meathead Shoegaze Rock of "Redwood," the Psych-ballad sound of "Barn," and the downtempo ache of October 10th's "Painting of a Tree" single.

Speaking on "Moab," Brendan Wright shares: “Moab was a song I wrote about trying to let go. At the time I was defining myself by expectations of a strained relationship. I was feeling pretty insane - like the kind of insane you feel back in 8th grade where you come home crying all of the time because you have absolutely no sense of self. Writing ‘Moab’ offered catharsis. Looking back, I feel a lot of embarrassment around those feelings, - but it was how I felt at the time and that was the place I was in. I wish I had acted differently, and I strive to now.”

Leanne Gallati - Selve - Oslo Twins - Us and Them

Leanne Gallati - Villain 2.0.

Leanne Gallati proves that she can belt her heart out on new single “Villain 2.0”. If you’re a fan of Lake Street Dive or Sammy Rae & the Friends, then the powerhouse vocals of Leanne Gallati will surely catch your attention. The synopsis of the new track is about looking within and recognizing that you can be the bad guy in a relationship sometimes, making it an introspective and relatable number.

The new video for “Villain 2.0.”  is a playful, old-fashioned perception of a “damsel in distress” gone wrong. Filmed with a camcorder and a green screen, the video leans into the old time-y vibes and whimsicality of the overall story the video portrays. Halfway through the video, the script is flipped with Gallati’s lover acting as the damsel, and Leanne turning into the perpetrator. Throughout the video and track, the duality of humankind unfolds, as we see an imperfect version of the narrator owning up to her flaws while simultaneously embracing the positive parts of herself.

Leanne Gallati shares a few words about the inspiration behind the new track: “Villain 2.0” came out of an instance, where I realized that I was actually the bad guy in a relationship, not the man. This songwriting process was very cathartic for me, because it is essentially about me accepting the ugly parts of my personality, and how I became self aware of my actions and how they affect others.”

Selve - Friday Night.

Australian band Selve share the final teaser of forthcoming album 'Breaking Into Heaven' before its release on the 12 September, the new single 'Friday Night' lands ahead of Selve's album tour spanning dates in so-called QLD, NSW & VIC across Sep-Nov, set to bring their (and we sort of quote) "lively" (Rolling Stone) singular blend of "mystery, intrigue and damn good rock & roll" (Scenestr) with "levels of throwaway fun right on the money" (Paul McBride); and to a New Year's appearance at Lost Paradise alongside names like Underworld, Channel Tres, Confidence Man, Dameeela, Marc Rebillet and more and a support for Winston Surfshirt.

A deeply earnest love song evoking a drive-in-cinema romance with sweeping string sections, lofty duet vocals via Liddle and Creation Saffigna, 'Friday Night' was written during the band's time in France, with Liddle going through a difficult time that "warranted the melancholic nostalgia" of the track's irrepressible pop hooks - with the song's creation taking on a journey reflective of its joyous post-nihilism.

Loki Liddle explains: "'Friday Night' is song coming from a sad time that transformed into something beautiful and redemptive - a Cadillac by the river, Bonnie and Clyde romance. It was the hardest song to get across the line. We couldn't find a chorus and were in the studio for 2-3 hours ad-libbing shit, we were about to give up hope - then I found it: 'If nothing matters / then why do you matter to me' - and we knew that was it, a skin of our teeth kind of moment! We hope you feel washed by its gentle waves of healing, redemption and real love."

Oslo Twins -All In Your Mind.

London-based indie-dance outfit Oslo Twins return today to announce a new A/B side, led by electrifying new track ‘All In Your Mind’, out digitally today via Half-Normal Records. Following the semi-viral success of their 'Tresor' EP earlier this year, with lead track 'I Wake Up Slowly' now approaching a million streams and gaining extensive radio airplay across Europe, 'All In Your Mind' builds on that breakthrough moment, and will be released on limited 7" vinyl with its B-side 'Sirens' on 15th October.

New single 'All In Your Mind' cements Oslo Twins' evolution from their Bristolian indie roots and plants them firmly in London’s after-dark orbit. Their hypnotic, industrial-tinged electronica feels more alluring than ever - led by Claudia Vulliamy’s conversational vocals, and the kind of nocturnal melancholy that belongs to rainy streets, flickering night-bus lights and post-club detours.

Recorded and produced by band member Eric C. Davies at his east London studio, the track rides on kinetic beats and gleaming synths, its intimacy heightened by Vulliamy’s vocals, recorded on her phone in a park, giving them a grainy, half-remembered texture.

On the release of 'All In Your Mind', Claudia Vulliamy said: "I approached the song with ideas of nostalgia and our blurred images of the past. This got me looking at a corner of the internet where people curate photos that are eerily reminiscent of a childhood memory, often low-res photos of empty spaces from the 2000s, as well as the similar ‘liminal’ aesthetic. I was interested in how we construct vague fantasies from incomplete memories or narratives. Vocally, I wanted it to feel like a conversation caught on record and turned into a song."

Us and Them - Get in the swing.

The Swedish-based duo Us and Them have a penchant for vocal harmonies and strong melodies in combination with elements of folk, psychedelia and baroque pop. The songs can be introspective and based on personal experiences, but also expressing timeless and universal stories. They first recorded for Fruits de Mer Records back in 2009 and have been regular visitors to the label since then, most recently with the first CD in our retrospective series ‘An Introduction to’ – it was a sell-out release. But now it’s time for a new album released on FdM’s ‘Friends of the Fish’ label.

In the autumn of 2022, Us and Them's third album. “…and I observed the blue sky” was released, an album that broadened Us and Them musical styles and was born from the isolation that the covid pandemic enforced, as well as the focus that arose from this time. Since then, the duo has released a covers EP, a few singles and collaborated with other artists.

The duo's fourth album scheduled for release on September 15 is “The Lights and the Shadow”, Britt and Anders explain... "While working on it, the songs were pulling in two directions, partly towards the pastoral and idyllic - a kind of escape from reality and a denial of the world that is going on outside of us - and partly towards a darker, more atmospheric sound; it was as if the album as a whole described the different sides of life - the light that is at best the starting point but with the shadow that is always there and risks falling over our lives at any time, hence the album's title."
