Juliet Quick - Changeling (EP).
Background - Brooklyn-based, alt-folk artist Juliet Quick shares her new release Changeling EP, out now on DSPs.
Changeling is a 3-part song series, using the folkloric trope of the changeling, in which a child is stolen by fairies and replaced with an imposter, to explore feelings of alienation from the self and the familiar that characterize early adulthood. They don’t follow a strict narrative, so much as trace different points in the evolution of that psychic experience.
The imagery is heavily grounded in the landscape of the Hudson Valley, where the artist was raised. It was recorded in Carmel, NY, where it was engineered and co-produced by Rees Shad in his own studio. The orchestral strings were arranged in a collaboration with Juliet Quick, Rees Shad, and Nathan Kamal. WEBSITE.
We featured 'Changeling Part 1' back in February and I am very pleased to be able to now share the whole EP. Regarding our last feature we commented "Part I' is a gorgeous and quite unique indie folk song, where Juliet Quick's vocals are quite beguiling and the musical arrangement adds a chamber folk dimension to this sumptuous and almost epic piece". Having now listened to the three tracks together, it's worth noting how each is a distinct piece, they share the same name but the differing attributes of each tune is notable, this is a fabulous EP.

Lou - Beaten.
Background - Singer-songwriter Lou shares her poignantly arresting first single "Beaten." With this first release, Lou’s powerful voice and emotional delivery stand out and offer a glimpse into the first page of her story; that suffering and aloneness can be turned into a force.
The song is a raw and unfiltered journey into her world. A definite talent to watch, Lou performs around LA and can often be heard at No Name on Fairfax.
Lou says of "Beaten" - "I originally wrote “Beaten” as a poem about being betrayed by love. The pain and the rage that band together to abandon you at the bottom of a dark hole. With nothing around, the only way out is to create light from within and hope that it saves you.”
Growing up in a musical household, Lou started singing at a very young age. As an only child, when her parents separated, Lou found a sanctuary by escaping into herself. She wrote a lot through her teens and, after a life changing moment, decided to share her voice with the world. Lou's debut EP is slated for release later this year. WEBSITE.
Lou's vocals are beautifully passionate and soulful on 'Beaten' a song that exudes feeling and emotion throughout. The slow paced rock orientated musical backing adds even more to this striking song.

Second Still - Echelons.
Background - Second Still announce their second EP due this month and share the single "Echelons". This EP is due April 20th on Sentimental Records. The band is also set to release their sophomore EP Equals that same day.
After their first full-length record was named “best post-punk debut LP of 2017” by Post-Punk.com, While the songs from this newest release retain the sheer power and intensity of the band’s previous two releases, Equals sees Second Still evolving their sound and progressing forward into sonically uncharted territory.
The four main components of the band’s signature sound are still there –chorus and delay-heavy guitar, hypnotic bass grooves, heavyweight drum machine beats, and hauntingly beautiful vocal melodies– but they have added a couple analog synthesizers into the arsenal for Equals, mixing a whole new element into their already uniquely realized style of post-punk. Commanding synth bass, subtle ambient soundscapes, and forceful lead synth hooks now supplement and enhance the distinctive sound that Second Still had already crafted on their first two releases. BANDCAMP, FACEBOOK.
Our third feature for Second Still this time with the new single 'Echelons'. Previously we have said "the band create unique material, that challenges referencing including some classic punk vibes, alongside a hint of shoegaze and a swathe of catchy hooks." The new song is a darker, brooding track, with a hypnotic rhythm and a musical arrangement that builds into a powerful crescendo.

Umbrella Bed - Rotate.
Background - Picking up on a 2-Tone ska sound might have seemed like a strange choice in the summer of 1995 when Umbrella Bed first assembled itself into existence; after all, the 2-Tone ska sound was a very short-lived period 15-years earlier and, without a doubt, in '95 the newly reborn ska genre "third wave" was creating a much harder-edged ska sound.
Third-wave ska was very much guided by the rise of the alternative music scene and infused ska with a more punk/grunge bent. It moved the "ska sound" pretty far away from 2-Tone's inherent pop roots. But, 2-Tone's shorter life had also left a lot of room to explore. Six full-length releases, hundreds of wildly energetic shows and two European tours later, doing anything but build on 2-Tone's legacy would have been a tragic loss.
As a live act, Umbrella Bed have also played a support role to a who's who in the ska/reggae world including The Skatalities, The Specials, English Beat, The Toasters, Mustard Plug, King Chango, MU330, Mad Sin, The Selector, and many others.
The band's primary line up has rotated some over the years but has remained largely intact. Lead vocalist Hellrocket, drummer Mitch Thompson, trombonist Al Teagarden and ska's (if not rock and roll's) premier French Horn player Eva Washburn have been around from day one. Trombonist Joy Judge and saxophonist Scott Wilcox have been with the band nearly a decade completing the "Horns of Mass Destruction". Although hardly new to the band anymore, Umbrella Bed's most recent addition Francisco Guerra on bass and Kabel Lefto on guitar bring a youthful element to a band just wrapping up its second decade - proof that there a lot more fuel in the energy tanks. WEBSITE.
The new full-length album from American ska band Umbrella Bed is entitled 'Rotate' of which we feature the title track. The bands take on Ska & 2 Tone is vibrant and upbeat, with hints of rock and roll along the way. The band have a fine live performance pedigree, that said they certainly can and do record some fabulous tunes in the studio, as this latest collection of music ably demonstrates.

Jack Ladder & The Dreamlanders - Atlantic Machine - Honey Radar
Jack Ladder & The Dreamlanders - Feel Brand New.
Background - “Feel Brand New” is the third song taken from the forthcoming Jack Ladder & The Dreamlanders album ‘Blue Poles’, out May 4 on Self Portrait Records. Capturing the sweet disposition that love can make life’s problems seem insignificant, the track takes a different direction, both musically and thematically from previous single “White Flag”.
“The bones of the song appeared on New Years Day after going to bed sober before midnight.“ Ladder says. “That day my partner and I went for a short bush walk that turned into a 5 hour trek. I was feeling a new chapter turning over.“
Jack Ladder is currently supporting Alex Cameron across Europe and the UK soon after a US run together, and will then have his own headline London show at The Shacklewell Arms on April 17th. Upon returning to Australia he will again join Alex Cameron but this time hitting the arenas as the opening act for The Killers on their national tour in April and May, following on from the band declaring themselves fans. Soon after that he will launch ‘Blue Poles’ with The Dreamlanders in Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney in May.
Blue Poles will be the fifth album from one of the most singular characters in Australian music. Sentimental and mournful, sardonic and surreal. Jack Ladder brings that towering and tender baritone to bear on tales of beauty, love, hope and redemption. A master of musical narrative, he conjures lyrics that celebrate the absurdity and sincerity of the human condition in songs that groove in subtle ways. WEBSITE.
We featured 'White Flag' just over a month ago and the new song 'Feel Brand New' is another stunning song. Slow paced, atmospheric and with Jack Ladder's definitive and enticing vocals, the production is sublime, the new album cannot arrive soon enough!

Atlantic Machine - I Don't Wanna Be Your Friend.
Background - London duo Atlantic Machine have announced the release of new single I Don’t Wanna Be Your Friend released on 6th April along with a video for the track. Debut album Mosquito will be released on 18th May.
Atlantic Machine are Producer and Grammy award winning Engineer Jim Lowe (Stereophonics, The Dandy Warhols, The Charlatans) and Vocalist and Guitarist Tiffany Page, who first met in the studio before forming their own musical partnership.
The pairing sees the baritone voice of Jim mixed with Tiffany’s raspy tones to create a unique new wave sound. New single I Don’t Wanna Be Your Friend follows recent single Automatic and is a tongue-in-cheek upbeat track that builds with a compellingly dirty guitar riff to an alt-pop chorus. The video, featuring both Jim and Tiffany, is the perfect match to the track. The band say;
“"This song is about people that have pissed you off or hurt you and you now don't care about. Relationships consumed in arguments. This song was written with the humour of these situations, rather than the bitter taste people get left with.” WEBSITE.
Less than a month since we first featured Atlantic Machines they are back with 'I Don't Wanna Be Your Friend' another impressive song that's is more than worthy of a share. This time we have a catchy rhythmic rocker, where once again the vocal duet adds distinction, as the duo up the power and pace.

Honey Radar - Psychic Cruise.
Background - Are you ready to go on a Psychic Cruise, my friend? Well strap in. Yet again, Honey Radar. What can you possibly say by now that’s not totally redundant at this point? Lo-fi master-class pop handyman rock sketches in the vein of Pavement or Syd Barrett. Questions? I didn’t think so.
“Psychic Cruise” is the third proper single that Chunklet has been fortunate enough to release by the Philly band and is streaming now on Self-Titled. More splayed noise. More reverb. More racket. More hooks. Repeat. Five new jams. Never heard before. New Honey Radar will always be celebrated at Chunklet HQ.
We’re told that next in the Honey Radar series will be a Fall tribute single featuring Chunklet’s Henry Owings. What will they be called? Henry Radar. Coming Fall ’18. WEBSITE.
The psychedelic sixties meets modern times head on with 'Psychic Cruise' a fabulous albeit short blast of Honey Radar.

Frøkedal - Susie Scurry - Dr Dog - The Goldberg Sisters - Alfred Hall
Frøkedal - I Don't Care.
Background - Oslo, Norway based Frøkedal today announces her long-awaited second album ‘How We Made It’, alongside the release of new single, and album opener ‘I Don’t Care’. The new album ‘How We Made It’, set for release August 31st via Propeller Recordings, follows her Norwegian Grammy-nominated debut LP of 2016, Hold On Dreamer.
An exploration of the process of moving forward in a positive manner, in spite of one's naysayers - ‘I Don’t Care’ is based around the idea of firmly closing the door to the past. "I never really questioned my life / 'til you condescendingly said I’d fail” Frøkedal exclaims in the tracks opening verse, amidst a backdrop of gently strummed guitar work and bustling drums. The song then opens up to its rousing chorus - bringing together crunching guitar lines and soaring strings to stunning effect.
An attempt to demonstrate being triumphant, rather than actually successfully being triumphant - 'I Don't Care', is more mad, than victorious in its execution. Speaking more on the release of the new single, Anne Lise Frøkedal said: "'I Don't Care' contains an energy that I specifically wanted to be present on the new LP. Unfiltered, impulsive thoughts and actions fuelled by everything from fear, love and deep passion - to red hot anger. The song seems to represent the whole spectrum. It's an ambivalent, slightly over the top effort to close the door to the past.”
"I’m ready for a wondrous expansion of life / all over your empty space” she sings as the songs begins to draw to a close, with a clear sense of determination. Frøkedal appears to be resolute in her songwriting and artistic goals, with ‘I Don’t Care’ standing as the perfect song to exemplify those intentions. Far from the acoustic sensibilities of previous singles, Frøkedal's more recent output signals an arguably more “mature” sound – combining full band with folk-leaning string sections. Though the instrumental approach feels more expansive and fully fledged, 'I Don't Care' - along with a lot of the album's lyrical themes represent Frøkedal's more "immature" personal traits, by her own admission.
Despite track-by-track production, Frøkedal’s lyrical output has taken a much more thematic approach with forthcoming album ‘How We Made It’: “When I started writing this new material, I was picturing different ages or stages in our lives when our vision gets a little blurred. I wanted the songs (and the characters) to channel these critical moments when decisions are dominated by emotion and not necessarily by logic,” she says. TWITTER.
Regular visitors to Beehive Candy will probably have noticed our fondness for the music of Anne Lise Frøkedal. 'I Don't Care' is a fresh sounding indie pop song that as we have come to expect is full of hooks and the beautifully definitive vocals. On the strength of the two tracks I have heard from her second album, it's looking like we are in for another very special collection of music.

Susie Scurry - The Elvis Hour
Background - Melbourne singer-songwriter Susie Scurry, formerly known as 'The Grand Magoozi', returns with a new single and title track to forthcoming EP 'The Elvis Hour'. More than a love letter to The King, this is an autumnal lament about the Sunday night blues, and the anxiety of working a job you don't love. Telling the story of an hourly program on the dusty end of the AM dial (the now defunct Magic 1278) which paid tribute to Elvis every Sunday night, showcasing his prolific career and breadth of styles from Vegas to Hawaii, cowboy to crooner. The Elvis Hour is a homage to the iconic legend and the lonely existence of ‘The King of Rock n' Roll’.
Susie's voice croons over an old-school, toe-tapping soft score of lap steel sighs, bass, percussion and strings, with lyrics reminding us of all that Elvis achieved in his short life - "there wasn't much he didn't do for a man that died at 42".
‘The Elvis Hour’ is the first single from Susie Scurry’s lush new six-track EP of the same name recorded in Sheffield, UK at Yellow Arch Studios with Mercury-nominated producer Colin Elliot (Richard Hawley, Jarvis Cocker, etc). The EP will be released on Friday 8 June.
In the spirit of golden-old classic standards, Susie Scurry's songwriting is clear and precise, original and familiar, honest and romantic. Her voice delivers lament and subtle wit in equal measure, singing about life and death, love lost, and a world gone awry. In 2016 Susie released her debut album, The Grand Magoozi on indie label Little Lake Records / Flippin Yeah Industries. Since that time she has performed and toured Australia extensively. Highlights include Melbourne Music Week, Darwin Festival, Perth Arts Festival, Port Fairy Folk Festival and a 26 day tour of the Outback supporting Darren Hanlon. WEBSITE.
'The Elvis Hour' is thankfully not another Elvis impersonator having their moment, rather as mentioned above "this is an autumnal lament about the Sunday night blues, and the anxiety of working a job you don't love." Using The Elvis hour as the vehicle for those feelings is very clever, and the song itself is fabulous with Susie Scurry's vocals deservedly centre stage. One thing's for sure you don't have to be an Elvis fan to enjoy this track, and if you are, I reckon you will still be impressed.

Dr Dog - Heart Killer.
Background - Philadelphia’s Dr Dog are sharing a new single, ‘Heart Killer’, the latest to be taken from their forthcoming album Critical Equation, due for release via We Buy Gold Records/Thirty Tigers on April 27, 2018. This new single emerging as the latest offering from the new album which find Gus Seyffert (previously The Black Keys, Beck) in the producer’s chair. Dr. Dog will support the new release with autumn 2018 UK tour dates, these to be announced shortly.
The slick psych-rock of ‘Heart Killer’ finds the band lyrically grappling with heart break whilst weaving their penchant for catchy melodies and delicate harmonies throughout the music. Critical Equation broke tradition for the band, opting to record in Los Angeles with Seyffert as opposed to their own ‘Meth Beach’ studios, the path to the record followed an extended break giving time for the band to re-evaluate; "We'd been touring and making records for our entire adult lives, and I think we just needed to take a step back," reflects Leaman. "It was important for all of us to figure out if we were actually doing what we wanted to be doing, or if we were just letting momentum carry us down this path we'd always been on.”
Dr. Dog have achieved multiple Top 50-charting albums in the US, performed on the likes of Letterman, Fallon and Conan and received widespread critical acclaim as well as touring with The Black Keys, Wilco, My Morning Jacket and The Lumineers. WEBSITE.
It's been sometime since I have listened to Dr Dog and 'Heart Killer' is a great reminder of what a fine band they are. The band deliver a polished psych rocker of a song, it's catchy, vibrant and confirms that the band have plenty of innovation and ideas still to offer.

The Goldberg Sisters - Dear Mr. Nilsson
Background - On May 4th psych-pop artist The Goldberg Sisters will release their new album HOME: A Nice Place To Visit. Known as the musical alter-ego of actor, musician, filmmaker and photographer Adam Goldberg, (and his mythical sister-twin "Celeste") The Goldberg Sisters today have released the new single "Dear Mr. Nilsson," written in the form of a letter to the iconic singer/songwriter Harry Nilsson. Goldberg explains that the track is "about the futility of trying to compose a song that measures up to Nilsson’s work. Somewhat ironically I wrote and recorded the demo for this in about 2 hours."
Goldberg and Lynch teamed up once again in the garage for the new Goldberg Sisters’ album, HOME: A Nice Place To Visit. Goldberg again did all the instrumentation save for violins and trumpet. Goldberg’s elasticity as a multi-instrumentalist and producer is nothing short of astonishing considering he lacks anything in the way of formal training and didn’t even think of seriously making music until his early 20s. “I started playing drums as a kid,” he recalls. “I played along with songs on the radio but mainly Bowie records.”
The music on HOME: A Nice Place To Visit offers listeners a profoundly immersive experience. “I’m really proud of the album,” Goldberg says. “I think I needed to step away from it for a bit to regain some perspective on it, which is always weird because now it’s truly like listening to somebody else... It’s not so much that I want to make music – I feel I have to, as if I have no choice.”
And so, he surrenders to his heart’s most urgent commands on the Goldberg Sisters’ HOME: A Nice Place To Visit, and for that, music fans can be thankful. TWITTER.
Just a month after sharing 'When Or Where Or Why' The Goldberg Sisters are back with the new track 'Dear Mr. Nilsson'. Once again the psych vibes are abundant, as are the hooks, the sixties influences are played out beautifully, this really is a song from the past, with the benefits of today's studio gear, wonderful!

Alfred Hall - Quite Some Time.
Background - Prefacing their highly anticipated album due in May, Norweigian Indie Pop Duo, Alfred Hall are back with another lighthearted and catchy single, "Quite Some Time." With a style entirely inspired by the staple 60's sound, "Quite Some Time" throws you back in time and satisfies the need for a simple love ballad.
Since 2009, Alfred Hall, the brainchild of Hans Thomas Kiær (guitar) and Bjørn Tveit (vocals), have been serving straight-up indie dream-pop to the masses - combining the lightness of summer sounds and salty sea breeze, with the sylvan dusk of Norwegian frosted forests. Even after their second gig ever, the rave reviews started coming in, and with their first single "So Bright" (Norway), the band quickly became the band to watch out for in 2012. "So Bright" was a hit on international tastemaker radio stations and on Norwegian radio, making way for the album Wilderness, which was released exclusively in Norway in 2013.
The album was nominated for "Best Pop Album" in the Norwegian “Grammy’s", called “Spellemannsprisen." In 2014 the band made their first release worldwide with "Alfred Hall EP," followed by the single "The King of Cape" the year after. At the beginning of last month, they made a comeback with their latest single “Pearl Diver” that gained traction in the US market. Now they’re back again with their next single and are gearing up to release an album in May of this year. FACEBOOK.
'Quite Some Time' is an upbeat song that references pop music form the past and bundles it with more modern indie pop sensibilities. If the charts were full of songs like this I would still be a Top 40 fan, after all that's where this tune belongs.

Rue Snider - Therese Lithner - Ellevator
Rue Snider - Vamonos.
Background - Brooklyn-based singer songwriter Rue Snider releases the official music video for "Vamonos" - the debut single off of his upcoming album City Living. Combining 80s alt sounds with a lyrical style reminiscent of 60s rock revolutionaries, "Vamonos" sets the scene for his album release later this summer.
Of the "Vamonos" video, Rue explains: "The song lyric is incredibly earnest. I wanted to create something visual that represented the emotion of the song but went in an extreme direction to lighten it up and make the viewer laugh rather than cry. We went super DIY and tried to make everything in the video obviously move in that direction. My thought was what if we play up the ridiculousness and overwhelming nature of a breakup by making the story of the video a bit silly. Everybody has a friend who felt like they were dying while breaking up with someone who was never the right fit to begin with. What if we repositioned that terrible fit to be a fun-loving, pink stuffed bear? It's the inability to let go of something that is obviously not right for you."
Heavily influenced by the sounds of the 80s, from Cyndi Lauper to R.E.M, Rue's new album City Living presents an aural experience of the downtown Manhattan scene in the mid-2000s brought to living color in 2018. The record, produced by Andrija Tokic (Alabama Shakes, Langhorne Slim, Hurry For The Riff Raff), was influenced by a formative time in Rue's life when he moved to New York in 2005, and found himself in an environment, surrounded by the sensory overload of Manhattan's Lower East Side. City Living captures this period -- a musical snapshot in time.
Rue's lyrics are informed more often that not by his personal life experiences. Broken Window, released in 2016, speaks of his journey to sobriety - a time defined by a hunger for consciousness and by dramatic emotional battles. City Living now serves as the musical prequel to Broken Window. A more upbeat record, City Living is colored by the sometimes blissful ignorance of living life unintentionally before waking up to an awareness of the reckoning and difficult choices that are ahead. WEBSITE.
We have featured Rue Snider just once before back in late September 2016, and I was very impressed by his music back then. Now we have 'Vamonos' a beautiful, gentle and catchy song that simply charms itself into your presence.

Therese Lithner - Drown.
Background - With a past in bands like Vaken and My Sound Of Silence, Therese Lithner was an active part of Umeå's flourishing music scene in the early 2010's. To begin writing songs for a solo project wasn't an obvious choice or any direct plan but fell more like a coincidence.
It was during a session in the rehearsal room, when it suddenly was as the 90s shined through and old childhood idols got free play. With reverb on vocals and guitar, Therese began improvising material, wrote three songs on pure inspiration and recorded them on her mobile phone. Somehow they felt different and the idea of a solo project began to take shape.
After Therese moved down to Stockholm, she started playing with Andreas Sandberg (Magic Potion) in a rehearsal space south of the city. Together with co-producer Linus Johansson (Folkvang, Earthquake, Nightcraft, Old Amica, etc.), the work started with the material that now has resulted in an EP, set for release this spring via Lazy Octopus Records. First single 'Drown' is out on February 2nd. The song is a journey through a relationship, it's about the feeling of first wanting to hug the breath out of everything thats beautiful and then let it fall apart. FACEBOOK.
'Drown' is an atmospheric rocker with a rhythmic and addictive feel to it. The vocals gently glide above the soundtrack adding a level of emotion and intrigue, collectively they harmonise beautifully, this is hard to resist playing again.

Ellevator - Voices.
Background - Good music seems instantaneous: a decisive rush of expression and dopamine. Hamilton, Ontario's Ellevator captures that direct hit of immediacy, with a closer listen revealing the meticulous design of their muscular pop songs. Front woman Nabi Sue Bersche delivers raw lyricism with quiet power. Her nimble melodies anchor the electric hooks and cinematic timbres Ellevator has refined on countless stages. Their striking debut EP - recorded in Hamilton with Michael Keire (Arkells, The Dirty Nil, Wildlife).
Brick by brick, Ellevator has built a reputation as a band to watch and is poised to break new ground in 2018. "Voices" is the third track from the band's debut EP, out on Arts & Crafts April 20th.
Nabi Sue Bersche's thoughts on the song: "I always had a pretty firm idea of what the Love Of My Life would be like. I had them mapped out completely, down to the rusty old pickup truck and the 5 o’clock shadow. But then they weren't any of those things. They were late nights on the phone and making out in my parent’s hatchback, they were unexpected and ill-advised and all sorts of tears. But I knew from the start that they were my future. So I guess Voices is a love song." FACEBOOK.

Dose - Ana Egge - Sofia Härdig - Flora Cash - London Plane
Dose - Furniture.
Background - Debut single Furniture by Newcastle, UK experimental noise-rock band Dose is due for release on 27th April via cult indie label A Turntable Friend. Their cinematic amalgamation of discordant melodies, intricate guitars and a strong rhythm- all blended together with an array of obscure effects and samples- has already earned them rave reviews on magazines such as DIY Magazine and The Line Of Best Fit.
Inspired by the experience of playing in their squalid, decaying practice space, Furniture was written by Sean Turland and Ewan Barr and recorded at Suburban Home Studio with MJ from Hookworms. The full band includes bassist Matthew Collerton, guitar/synth/samples from Sam Campbell and drummer Joe Donkin. The group have been together under many iterations since 2015, discovering their unique sound which blends art rock, krautrock and slowcore into one coherent sonic landscape.
The song Furniture is led by a consistent guitar line remaining present throughout the track like clockwork, dipping in and out of view as other parts take precedence. Extreme dynamic alterations ace the song, from the abrasive chorus to the intertwining, mellow middle 8. For the climax, melodic guitar feedback and an Ebow are used side by side; alongside Ewan’s spoken word overlapping Sean’s distant vocals, this invokes a sense of multiple inner voices and opinions, mirroring the lyrics’s theme of abandonment. WEBSITE.
A rhythmic and chunky opening evolves into a smoother flowing song on 'Furniture' where the vocals add intrigue, the band power up and we are off into a sonic blast of dynamic rock and roll.

Ana Egge - Dance Around The Room With Me.
Background - On June 8, 2018, Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Ana Egge will release her new album White Tiger via Story Sound Records. This week, Egge shares the lead single "Dance Around The Room With Me", which features Anais Mitchell on background vocals and Big Thief's Buck Meek on guitar.
White Tiger features nine originals and one John Hartford cover, and so amply displays Egge’s singularly articulate and affecting honesty and sensitivity as to once again deserve USA Today’s accolade, "[Ana] can write and sing rings around" her contemporaries.
Ana got bit by the music bug as a teenager, and having grown up with parents who were, as she describes, "motorcycle-riding hippie farmers" raising four children on a farm in North Dakota, Ana took matters into her own hands, building her own guitar and moving to Austin, TX to soak in the vibrant music scene. The striking depth and unusual maturity of her singing, playing, and songwriting got her noticed, and she recorded her debut album River Under the Road (1997) with the legendary western swing band Asleep At The Wheel. The following year, at only 19-years old, The Austin Music Awards named Ana “Best Singer/Songwriter” and “Best Folk Artist”.
Egge soon began hitting the road, opening for the likes of Iris DeMent, Shawn Colvin, and Ron Sexsmith. Later on she got to share the stage with John Prine, Sinead O'Connor, and Lucinda Williams who once said “Ana's an exceptional songwriter, listen to the lyrics…[she’s] the folk Nina Simone!”
Over the ensuing years and eight subsequent albums, Ana has made good on her promising debut, going on to record full albums with The Stray Birds and The Sentimentals, and work with highly acclaimed producers such as Martin Terefe, Jason Mercer, Joel Plaskett, Stewart Lerman, and Steve Earle who’s said “Ana Egge's songs are low and lonesome, big square-state noir ballads which she plays on a guitar she built with her own two hands and sings like she's telling us her deepest, darkest secrets.” WEBSITE, TWITTER.
'Dance Around The Room With Me' opens with an understated acoustic backdrop and is soon accompanied by Ana Egge's melodic and gorgeous vocals. The song picks up pace and depth as the hooks begin to dig in deep.

Sofia Härdig - My Week.
Background - Sofia Härdig’s new single ‘My Week’, from the upcoming album ‘Changing The Order’ is crafted from new wave, electronica-influenced synths, amongst other live instruments and powerful vocals. Championed by Belle and Sebastian’s Stevie Jackson, Sofia has worked with major Swedish artists including Grammy Award winners The Hellacopters and bob hund. Furthermore, she has collaborated with Yoshimi from Japanese noise-rockers Boredoms and the alternative indie band Free Kitten. Sofia’s experimental nature shines through with her new material that blends new wave and electronic influences.
‘My Week’, the third single of the album, takes the post-punk sound expertly exercised by The Cure or Joy Division and Sofia makes something of her own. Thick-layered instrumentation features offbeat semi-quavered synth that bounces on top of syncopated distorted guitar; characteristic of early 80’s new wave. Low, pedaled bass sits under Sofia’s commanding vocals, which are tinged with despair and the desperation of escape, as she sings ‘Saturday, Saturday, Saturday, Saturday, I’m still insane.’
“I wrote this song at a Café in Brussels when I was lost during a tour. The house I was staying at was full of sleeping musicians and I was hungry, so I took a random tram to search the town. The Café I found was alright, their sandwiches filled me up. I spent some time writing and recording on my portable recorder while looking at people around me. Back home I recorded the song in my studio – guitar, voice, synths and drum programming. Then I recorded parts from some musicians I met on the road; a Canadian bass player and an Australian pianist. The song should be listened to loud when the walls in your room start closing in on you…” – Sofia Härdig. WEBSITE, TWITTER.
It's our fifth feature for Sofia Härdig and the new track 'My Week' from the upcoming album ‘Changing The Order’ is another impressive song. Feisty and fierce, the driving beat is accompanied by some passionately delivered vocals, and a feeling of determination that is almost hypnotic!

Flora Cash - 18 Dollars.
Background - Flora Cash is a Scandi-American duo made up of Shpresa Lleshaj and Cole Randall. The couple has taken it upon them to sonically explore the diversity of human relationships through minor keys and brooding vocals, they double down on their palette of inky blues and blacks, standing wholly apart from their R&B-Pop peers. Having “met” via SoundCloud and instantly e-hitting it off musically, their “atmospheric in theme and vibe” material had soon after been supported by the likes of Noisey US, Paste, Wonderland, The Music Ninja, Earmilk, The Line of Best Fit, Clash, Impose Magazine and more.
Following the success of their last album, ‘Nothing Lasts Forever But Its Fine’ – most with lead single ‘You’re Somebody Else’, which has had over 6 million plays on Spotify and has also featured in numerous playlists such as New Music Friday USA. The track also went viral on YouTube with 4.8 million views, which was the breakthrough moment for the couple. Flora Cash also have a substantial year of live performances ahead of them; they’re set to be playing across the world, from Hanoi to Miami, and also making their debut at SXSW this year.
Flora Cash now release their new single ’18 Dollars’ where Randall leads the sincerely sublime R&B ballad with husky, reverberating vocals. Minor-keyed guitar wraps Shpresa’s stony harmonies, as they rest on a spine of solemn brass and bass synths. Lleshaj takes centre-stage during the bridge, and the contrast in vocals is poignant. The duo comes together again in the tragically touching closing chorus.
The pair skilfully blend elements of acoustic music with ethereal production, hinting at Mt Wolf, Poliça, Vogue Dots and Kings Of Convenience. The honesty of their lyricism is constantly tinged with dark moments, moments of doubt, of anger, of pain fully present in the sonic backbone of Flora Cash.
‘18 Dollars is a song that looks back on aspects of a relationship that has ended. There’s a stubbornness and a cockiness about it but that’s really only superficial. Beneath the surface there’s a deep longing to fix something that’s broken but a lack of insight as to how that might be possible. There is confusion about where things stand and how bad (or good) things really were. Ultimately, the track communicates the deeply felt ambiguity that often surrounds the ending of a romantic relationship.’ – Flora Cash. WEBSITE, TWITTER.
Flora Cash appeared once on Beehive Candy in 2016 and once again last year, and here we are once again another year on. '18 Dollars' has some personal and intimate feeling vocals that glide above a gradually developing soundtrack. The duo have a clear and individual sound to their music that continues to explore new ground, doing so with notable accomplishment.

London Plane - New York Howl.
Background - New York City based six-piece, female-fronted rock band London Plane shares the title track and accompanying video off their forthcoming debut LP New York Howl. In their own words, "'New York Howl' is "a love song to New York. Your relationship with the city – especially if you’re newly arrived – can be fraught with uncertainty and fear until, if you give in to it, the city makes you fit its mold."
London Plane's debut album began when David Mosey and Cici James who were introduced by Joe McGinty (Psychedelic Furs) backstage at a tribute show to Lou Reed following his death. After seeing her perform, David approached Cici about giving a go at vocals for a project that had been developing, at least in concept. Eventually, over many months, the correspondence between the two became a musical project driven by the narrative of a stranger; a long since passed Lower East Side scenester who left her diary for David to discover so many years later (see bio).
David asked long-time collaborator Danny Taylor (Collapsing Scenery, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart) to produce the songs. Along with London Plane keyboardist, co-producer and mixing engineer Julian Tulip, and mixing engineer Ashley Stubbert the album came together into a cohesive if not eccentric whole. Others who contributed to the project include Jennifer Fraser (Raveonettes, The Warlocks, Zaza), McKenzie Stubbert (VE artist Chris Milk), Brian Groux (World Atlas), and Kristofer Widholm (Morex Optimo). New York Howl will be available on all digital streaming platforms on May 18, 2018. WEBSITE, TWITTER.
Tour Dates:
04.15 - Berlin - New York City, NY
05.17 - Berlin - New York City, NY.
There is an expansive and powerful feel to 'New York Howl' right from the beginning. The six piece band provide a tight and cohesive sound behind the soaring and melodic vocals, all done with a sense of drama and anticipation.

Mamas Gun - Paul Cherry - A. Wesley Chung
Mamas Gun - You Make My Life A Better Place.
Background - Mamas Gun are now sharing the video for new single, ‘You Make My Life A Better Place’, the new clip follows the recently announced UK tour. The dates arrive as part of a wider world tour in support of the band’s forthcoming album, Golden Days which is due for release on May 18, 2018 via Candelion.
‘You Make My Life A Better Place’ follows in the footsteps of the Lauren Laverne-supported ‘London Girls’ and the Earmilk and Indie Shuffle-approved ‘Strangers On A Street’. The new album, Golden Days itself chronicles the band's decade-long journey to date with Platts and the rest of the band taking production duties into their own hands, recording the tracks live using analogue equipment. Notable contributions are littered throughout the album with the likes of Shawn Lee (Jeff Buckley, Kelis, St Etienne) assisting on the album’s mix, and songwriters Connor Reeves (Tina Turner, Joss Stone) and Christopher Braide (Sia, Lana Del Rey) lending hands.
Alongside the likes of Charles Bradley, Curtis Harding and the Dap Kings, Mamas Gun have helped fuel the vanguard of 21st century soul, as well as spawning Top 10 hits on four continents. In addition to securing support slots with the likes of Beverley Knight and Raphael Saadiq, Mamas Gun have performed at global and domestic music festivals including WOMAD, Secret Garden Party, Wilderness and Greenroom with their forthcoming UK tour arriving after an intimate sell out return in London. Paul Cherry - Like Yesterday.
Background - Paul Cherewick, aka Paul Cherry, came up during Chicago’s garage rock golden age of 2014. Despite being heavily involved in the DIY scene with up-and-coming bands such as Twin Peaks and The Lemons, Paul has abandoned the all-too-familiar lo-fi rock sound of his first EP “On Top”. He has spent the past two years returning to his jazz roots, completely reinventing himself on his upcoming LP, Flavour.
The first single, "Like Yesterday" sets the tone for the record as a brilliantly written, mid-tempo pop ballad. It would fit nicely as a modern addition to Paul McCartney's “Ram” or Todd Rundgren's "Something/Anything," or even Player’s “Baby Come Back.”
Paul Cherry crafts melodies on Flavour that sit at the intersection of 1970s yacht rock and Ariel Pink’s lo-fi dream pop. Lyrically, Cherry touches on millennial culture with references to love in the modern age, phone culture, and giving a new, light-hearted twist to age old old themes of love lost, missed connections and polar political climates. TWITTER, BANDCAMP.
Whether it's Yacht Rock or Indie Pop the ten tracks that make up 'Flavour' are all pretty impressive. The featured song 'Like Yesterday' is indicative of the quality and unique nature of Paul Cherry's music, where ideas are there in abundance.

A. Wesley Chung - Restless.
Background - Californian-born, Glasgow-based Americana musician A. Wesley Chung (The Great Albatross) has just shared the lead track from his debut - 'Restless' - a life-affirming and cinematic dose that tells of Chung's own conflicting emotions around growing up and leaving California.
The wonderful singer-songwriter will release his debut album as a solo artist on 18th May via Glasgow’s own LP Records. Neon Coast is an homage to the US West Coast, where Chung grew up, and the three most pronounced sentiments that he associates with it – freedom, lonesomeness and restlessness.
The songwriter, known for his previous collaborations with Evan Weiss (Into It. Over It / Their There They’re) and Kate Grube (Kittyhawk), was reared on the ‘golden oldies’ – Chuck Berry, The Beach Boys, The Beatles. “I've tried to explore the three themes of ‘freedom’, ‘lonesomeness’ and ‘restlessness’ through the sounds of Country, Motown and Folk/Americana that I grew up listening to in California” says Chung. He expands: “In our deep search for meaning/self we become obsessed with self-actualization, and our fear of death pushes us further into our desire for recognition which only leads us deeper into self – this is ‘restlessness’.
Reflecting on the influence his Californian youth has had on Neon Coast, Chung comments: “Thematically, it’s a meditation on my home state, while sonically it’s a straight up road trip album, like a mixtape from a friend. From the start I wanted to make this perfectly-imperfect album that focused more on getting the vibe right than the parts or performance (a main reason we recorded most of it live).
Chung emigrated to the UK in his adult life to a wholly different and, in many ways, surprising culture, making Glasgow his new home. The Scottish city would be the facilitator to Chung’s band of revolving members and collaborators, The Great Albatross, who’s split 7” with Into It. Over It. was released on Struggletown Records, with the B-side mixed and co-produced by Glasgow producer Gordon Skene (formerly of Frightened Rabbit, Smash Williams, Moth and the Mirror). Skene would also go on to produce the band’s full length. FACEBOOK.
Hand claps and vocals introduce 'Restless' however this is no minimalist piece. As the musical arrangement develops we are treated to a melodic and cleverly layered assortment of instrumental sounds. The vocals are smooth and engaging, if the rest of the album is of this standard, we have a lot to look forward to.

Benjamin Dean Wilson - Forest Ray - Ellie Schmidly
Benjamin Dean Wilson - The Smartest Person in the Room.
Background - Benjamin Dean Wilson is a one man show - his new album, "The Smartest Person in the Room" was written, produced, and performed entirely by him and recorded in analog using a Tascam 1/2 inch tape deck.
Featuring a unique storytelling structure, each track is like a short film with its own ensemble of characters and blends elements of traditional "talkin' blues" style together with musical theater.
Benjamin Dean Wilson started his creative career in the film industry before turning to music, working as a camera assistant on commercials. He then made short 16mm films and play before deciding to tell his stories through music instead. He released his first album, "Small Talk" through German label Tapete Records, followed by a European tour.
Benjamin Dean Wilson: guitars, piano, keyboards, bass, drums, harmonica, violin, banjo, mandolin, ukulele, organ, percussion, bells, etc. Maria Grigoryeva: fiddle on "The Smartest Person in the Room". FACEBOOK, BANDCAMP.
The title track from the new album 'The Smartest Person in the Room' is a very good indicator of the sheer quality and imagination that has gone into this impressive collection of songs. More or less a one man band, the musical arrangements are nonetheless tight and pleasing and the vocals add some real distinction to the music. Catchy, likable and individual this is an album to delve into.

Forest Ray - Laughing.
Background - Forest Ray experiments in the analog and psychedelic. Their progressively vintage sound will have you spiralling back to the 1960s and beyond in a whirlwind of fuzz wound like a Roland Space Echo. Garage punk and psych with tinges of post-punk and drone rock recorded on an 8 track reel to reel. Started in San Luis Obispo, CA by Peter Sumic and Robby Porovich and currently based in Seattle. Their first record, Musical Witchcraft, was released October 28th, 2016 on 180g vinyl.
AKA Forrest Rey, Forest Ray is a Psychedelic Rock experiment that was born out of a DIY studio in San Luis Obispo, CA. The Studio, which was originally a slum lord junk dungeon attached to an apartment building, was transformed into a menagerie of vintage recording artifacts filled with tape machines, oddball microphones and prehistoric delay boxes.
Dedicated to the analog recording process and use of reel to reels for all steps of mixing and mastering for a darker, older and more intimate sound, more time was spent rewinding and marking tape for recording projects than was spent eating or sleeping. Originally released on Demo Cassettes hand-drawn by a good friend and collaborator in the Seattle Area, Forest Ray will release its first Vinyl LP mixed and recorded fully analog by Peter Sumic (Guitar, Bass, Vocals) and Robby Porovich (Guitar, Vocals) and mastered to Vinyl by Pete Lyman at Infrasonic Sound Studios in Los Angeles, California.
Forest Ray's recording have never touched a computer or any digital effect or amplifier during the recording , mixing or mastering process. The recordings are 100% analog until the vinyl and digital masters are made seperately and transferred from tape. The music combines guitar driven psychedelic rock with tinges of raw synth-laced UK post-punk, Tropicalia and Latin psych flute influence, expressive uninhibited saxophones with stoney jazz influences with energetic drumming that embodies the youthful garage punk aesthetic that fueled the group’s creation. FACEBOOK, BANDCAMP.
Casually coming into play the music on 'Laughing' is beautifully arranged and has so much clarity. The vocals add a little psychedelic feeling to the song, whilst the music on this occasion holds centre stage as it digs in deep.

Ellie Schmidly - One More Wave.
Background - Ellie Schmidly has released "One More Wave," the second single from her upcoming debut EP, Blossom & Bone. Composer Jordan Critz arranged strings for "One More Wave," with Todd Gummerman (of MuteMath) producing this song along with the rest of Blossom & Bone. "One More Wave" is available today at all digital outlets, with Blossom & Bone following on May 11.
"'One More Wave' is about the bittersweetness of beautiful moments in life," recalls Schmidly. "I sometimes find myself celebrating joyful times only to be interrupted by the fact that the moment will pass. It seems grim, but I think it gives us freedom to find gratitude for something in every season of life."
Ellie’s journey to this point is a serendipitous story. Starting to write and record this EP was daunting process because she felt so far behind everyone else. She hadn't set out to become a songwriter. She wasn't attending a music program in Nashville, and wasn't considering music as her career path. Instead, her music was discovered by famed producer Charlie Peacock (The Civil Wars, The Lone Bellow) after one of her performances was posted to Twitter.
Peacock was so taken with her Springfield, MO house show performance that he reached out to her the very next day to introduce himself. Peacock invited Ellie to Nashville to partake in songwriting sessions and introduced her to those in the community that could help cultivate her music. She says Charlie’s encouragement was life-changing. It turned out to be literally life-changing because she left her home, friends, family, and school in Missouri where she was studying public policy, to make the move to Nashville. After years of learning, working, and continually writing, Ellie has arrived at this seminal point when she'll unveil her debut, Blossom & Bone. TWITTER.
Just a month ago we stated "Ellie Schmidly's vocals are personable and charming" when we shared her first single. The follow up 'One More Wave' is another beautiful song, once again the vocals are enticing and melodic, the music is in fine harmony, this really is something special.

Hover Bored - Esmé - You Want Fox
Hover Bored - Safe Side.
Background - Formed in Wakefield, but now based in Manchester, Hover Bored are an up-and-coming grunge-pop quartet set to release their new single, the fiery, exhilarating Safe Side on March 30th.
Searing riffs, rolling bass, crashing drums and bratty vocals coalesce into a fiercely infectious track. Only just breaking the two-minute barrier, it calls to mind the likes of Dinosaur Pile-Up, Honey Lung and King Nun. Hover Bored’s sound is a fuzzy concoction of modern grunge and scuzzed out power-pop.
“With our music constantly adapting, 'Safe Side' captures the progression we have made over the past year” the guys explain,“It began as a throwaway idea until we made it the ending of another song. We fell in love with the energy that this small interlude brought to rehearsals and shows; so we decided to make it a full track.”
Gigging extensively across the key cities in the musical hot-bed that is the North West of England, Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds, it’s no surprise the four-piece bring to their recordings an urgency usually reserved for blisteringly loud live sets in grimy, sticky venues.
Safe Side was recorded with Sugar House, who have produced records by Pale Waves, Vynce and Larkins, at Catalyst studios in Manchester, was self-released last Friday. TWITTER.
From the opening moments 'Safe Side' signals that this song is going to be a thunderous affair. Guitars soar above, the rhythm is intense, the vocals passionately determined, in all this is a feisty blast of grunge rock, and some...

Esmé - I Wonder.
Background - Sydney based Songstress Esmé lures her listeners in with a spellbinding tonal quality and a rhythmically entrancing sound. Imagine a soundscape of stripped back beats, electro-acoustic guitar melodies and a soul imbued voice.
Esmé's unique approach to music and song writing can be attributed to her upbringing. She is one of eight children and was home schooled until grade 8, mastering the art of independent learning at a young age, self taught in both voice and piano. She left school and home at the age of 16 and began performing in small cafes and bars in Northern Queensland, before moving to Sydney to pursue music full time. Her long awaited debut single Come with Me was self released in December 2017, sparking the attention of Triple J and surprising the Sydney music scene with her understated sound. Esmé will release her second single I Wonder on the 30th of March 2018.
“My sister Olivia and I have always been extremely close. In 2014, our father passed away in our arms after a very long struggle post car accident. It was just the two of us with him at the time. I feel like this experience especially has always lead us to explore ontological ideas, me through music and her through poetry, she’s a writer. She texted me the words to ‘I wonder’ randomly one day. Her lyrics seemed to latch onto my melody, and my chords seemed to occupy the space in between the words perfectly.“ - Esmé
I Wonder song explores the invisible reality of human beings that can’t be physically seen like our bodies, yet we often understand to be the most alluring aspects of ourselves. I wonder explores the question with lulling electric guitar patterns and subtle synths, to what extent are we transcendent? Esmé music is reflective of the person she is; quiet and understated at first but full of intricacy and emotion the further you listen. Esmé lures listeners in with a spellbinding tonal quality and a rhythmically entrancing sound. She draws inspiration from jazz, soul, art and poetry to create a hushed hybrid of jazz infused electro soul. WEBSITE.
'I Wonder' opens with an understated musical arrangement that allows the vocals to beautifully engage with the listener. The soundtrack develops in an intricate manner, always making room for some soulful jazz infused vocals, that come together with refined style.

You Want Fox - Liar Liar.
Background - Nottingham duo, Natalie and Colette of You Want Fox are proud to announce that their second album Reverse The Curse will be self-released with the help of Inflight Music Distribution on 27th April 2018.
After the success of their debut album ‘You Can’t Sit With Us’ in 2016, the girls have played a number of prestigious festivals including Dot to Dot and Macmillenfest as well as landing a tour in Los Angeles.
Melodically they are channelling Queens Of The Stone Age and Sleigh Bells, they capture you and pull you in with their massive pop hooks, making tunes that stick in your head for days.
Equal parts lipstick pouts and knife fights, they emit an effortless fusion of girly pop sensibilities with biting distortion and primal rhythms. TWITTER.
'Liar Liar' is one of eleven tracks on 'Reverse The Curse' a potent rocker of an album. The vocals add some pop sensibilities to the music, whilst musically the rock & roll is uncompromising as it barnstorms from song to song. There are shades of Blondie's debut album on occasion, but with more power, whatever the comparisons this is one vigorous rocker.

Frog Eyes - The Rare Occasions - Lavender Child - Moonshine Booze
Frog Eyes - Idea Man.Background - Frog Eyes are set to release their final album Violet Psalms May 18th on Paper Bag Records. Frog Eyes have announced a North American tour in support of the album. Frog Eyes have made their last album. 17 years after their teetering debut, the Vancouver band unveils Violet Psalms—a giddy lament; a gnashing jubilee; a rain-drenched allocution on hope vs. horror, paradise vs. pride, Marx and Brexit and bad acid trips.
It's an ending like a beginning. "We were trying to pretend it was our first record," Carey Mercer says. This is their final record, Frog Eyes' last gasp—but the art-rockers wanted to capture the energy of a debut, the freedom you feel "when there's no expectation that anyone will actually listen." They made it at home, burrowing under the house where Mercer lives with drummer Melanie Campbell. The goal was to blot out the world, focusing on what they could grow down there, four musicians in a basement. Could they squeeze out ten songs? Was there enough paste in the tube to squeeze out 10? "In the end there was. Which is rad."
No guests, no engineers. A self-invention. Violet Psalms began with its frantic, reverb-drenched guitar, squiggling over a modulation pedal. Next Mercer and Campbell concocted the drum parts—imagining them as onomatopoeia then recording them in fragments, kickdrum by kickdrum, tom by tom, with tailored effects. "The goal was to disorientate," Mercer explains, but also to work by instinct, gut—a cut-up of music and image, songs that coil back and kiss. The band pruned as they went, adding Terri Upton's bass parts, taking other parts away. Whereas past LPs used piano, Shyla Seller worked with shimmering synths—chords like bleeding water colour, shadows casting on a wall. TWITTER.

The vocals on 'Idea Man' are different in a wonderful way, the music is fresh and vibrant and the art rock direction is refined. In summary, this is one of those songs that impacts hard, it's fabulous.

The Rare Occasions - Mercy Mercy.
Background - The Rare Occasions have been steadily releasing new music since 2013, but have yet to release full-length album - that news changes now with the announcement of their proper debut Into The Shallows, which comes out May 25th (the renowned Spanish artist David Navas gave them permission to use one of his pieces as the cover art too).
The Rare Occasions originally formed in Providence before migrating west to LA. The band draws inspiration from each successive wave of garage rock, while always putting their own dark spin on it.
Their sound melds angular guitar riffs with indie pop melodies, evidenced by their previous songs like the blistering psych-anthem “Dysphoric” (from Feelers) to the dreamlike track “Bug Eyes” (from Futureproof). This variability and depth of styles, layered with lyrical themes of existentialism and self-reflection, are what both define them and set them apart.
Primarily recorded in their cramped LA rehearsal space, The Rare Occasions’ debut bring their northeast sensibilities with them to California… the record delves deeper into the musical and lyrical concepts which have come to define the band’s aesthetic. WEBSITE.
Expansive indie rock comes to us in the form of 'Mercy Mercy' packing some slick guitar sounds and vocals that plead for your attention. The band are tight and rhythmic as they slide out some fine hooks with apparent ease.

Lavender Child - Plutomania.
Background from Lavender Child - I released my debut EP “Reflections” independently this past fall. Yet, I was eager to dig deeper into my artistic vision. I created a collection of videos that premiered in January to a private audience of over 120 people at Ildsjel Collective in Toronto’s east end. Two videos (“Happy Illusions”, “Beautiful Landscapes”) have since been released publicly, with two more to be released in Spring 2018.
Plutomania is the story of a person who has always valued wealth and material possessions over personal relationships. As the person nears the end of their life they reflect on their past and come to the realization of deep loneliness and sorrow. There is an enormous range of dynamics and emotion throughout the song as the narrative moves through the process of realization, denial and acceptance.
The music video features the plutomaniac erotically and ravenously consuming “the fruits of their labors” and in the closing scene these indulgences come to an abrupt end. The production for Plutomania was proudly run by an all female crew, both behind and in front of the lens. With performance by Michaela Woeller, special thanks to Emma Aurelia/ Jessie Gaumond and front-woman Stephanie Traplin directing/filming/editing/ and providing the fashion from her shop Take Time Vintage. With 'Plutomania' we have an intriguing subject, a creative and thought provoking video, however for me, most of all we have a gorgeous song. I thoroughly recommend checking out the full EP, where the vocals are mesmerising, the musical arrangements beautifully crafted and as debut releases go, this one is very special.

Moonshine Booze - Happy.
Background - Moonshine Booze present 'Happy' as the second single off their debut album 'Desert Road', released via Seahorse Recordings. Along with that they reveal a new surreal video shot against the backdrop of vivid Kafkaesque scenery. Written by Emiliano Zapata and realized with the masterful supervision of videographer Jessica Montebello, who shot and edited the clip, in addition to her tremendous artistic contribution involving certain peculiar characters.
This story juxtaposes the immense landscape of the scorching desert with a smoky and dark journey that projects through an illusory door. Darkness and light, solitude and freedom side-by-side and yet opposite, and the fragile equilibrium of the characters, such as the emblematic clown, obsessed by chronic mood swings. These are allegories of the most arduous and torturing journey the mind can conceive - a journey towards happiness and the demolition of 'social rules' that inevitably tide the mind within stringent tormentuous borders.
Combining grit blues rock with alternative country, Moonshine Booze's music has been described as psychedelic country blues-tinged rock, as well as brazen desert alcoholic acoustic rock. The album's release was preceded by their first single 'The Place', along with a fiery retro-freakish yet humorous video.
Moonshine Booze formed in the summer of 2014 in Teramo, Italy. This trio is comprised of Andrea Manila (vocals), Emiliano Zapata (guitar) and Fabio Manchos (drums). The video for 'The Place' was a collaborative effort between Emiliano Zapata and Josh Heisenberg, with Zapata writing the scenario, Josh handling the filming and editing, and both on direction. Having been active on the music scene for over twenty years in various bands, both in Italy and The USA, the trio has gathered and relaborated experiences from different musical genres, putting them to good use in their new project. BANDCAMP.
Back in February we featured 'The Place' by Moonshine Booze and the second single 'Happy' is a welcome follow up. We considered the album back then and remarked "This is a band that are hard to put into just one genre as is made clear with the above promo piece. That they are highly original, creative, and perhaps just a little crazy should be taken as read, you can add fun and emotive, such is the variety packed into the collection." As 'Happy' demonstrates I feel those comments were valid and if I might be so bold, are now endorsed even further...
