Jess Locke - Fool.

Melbourne artist Jess Locke is known for penning indie pop tracks that are at times subtle and full of melancholy, at times delivered with an acerbic tongue, but always steeped heavily in narrative. As premiered by triple j's Home & Hosed, new offering in ‘Fool’ is simple and raw, seeking to partner dirty grunge guitars, a fuzzy lead, gritty vocals and a punchy rhythm section. With the new track comes the announcement that Locke has inked a deal with cherished Melbourne label Dot Dash, of which artists such as Gena Rose Bruce, Methyl Ethel and Donny Benét call home.

“Is this the best you can do? You look like a fool” by Locke’s own admission this is as acid as her tongue gets. Delivered with irony, ‘Fool’, gives voice to real feelings of disappointment in people and in the way they treat each other, the way some set about to divide and exploit when threatened.

Of the track Locke asserts: “I originally imagined the chorus being sung by the Earth, or some other omniscient entity, to humans, like a loving parent to a wayward teenager - not angry, just disappointed. Although I wrote the song more than a year ago, I feel like it could have been written as a soundtrack to 2020”.

Sandtimer - Three Cars.

‘Did he sell his soul so he could buy it back somewhere down the track?’

Three Cars is the next single from indie-folk group Sandtimer. Featuring on their upcoming album, Running In Sunlight, it is a stripped back reflection on materialism and the illusions it can create. With warm three part harmonies, intricately woven guitars and an ambient brass accompaniment, this song draws on classic and contemporary folk elements.

Regarding Three Cars, vocalist and guitarist Rob Sword said: “Some time ago I saw three sports cars in someone’s drive. They had personalised number plates and were parked in ascending numerical order. Seeing this made me think about what the owner might have sacrificed of their own freedom and happiness to acquire these status symbols.”

The album Running in Sunlight, which will be released this October, sees the band take a loose and immediate approach to the creative process, with the songs being written and recorded over a short timeframe, with sparser instrumentation than their previous music.

“This album isn’t about anthems,” says Simon Thomas, vocalist and guitarist. “It’s our attempt at exploring the raw edges of the climate we live in- the uncomfortable parts as well as the beauty. We wanted to give ourselves space to do this intimately and honestly.”

Certain Animals - Too Long.

Without warning, new Certain Animals single Too Long takes you along a torrent of scraps of memories. Carried on a Chicago shuffle, the song roars past topics such as politics, religion, alienation and domestic disputes at the speed of a steam train. With abrasive vocal cords and an expanding lung capacity you will be swept away on an inner adventure, with Dylan-esque poetry as a backdrop. When the distorted guitar parts seem to glow like coal in that steam train, it suddenly stops. And whispering and almost vulnerable the band muses about the freedom that life as a musician brings, only to stoke the fire even more to end the journey with three-part vocals!

Dutch band Certain Animals serves you melodic rock filled with vocal harmonies. The members aren't afraid to show which records they've been listening to. Musical titans from the '60s and '70s are spinning on their turntable on a daily basis. The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Neil Young, Crosby, Stills & Nash and Electric Light Orchestra are regular companions in their musical life, but also the fuzzy and phasey sounds of contemporary bands like Tame Impala influence the music of Certain Animals.

Crawford Mack - Depends On Where You Stand.

Crawford Mack is not your average new artist. His fellow Glaswegians would argue that he is not particularly new for starters, given his regular live performances across the city. With his debut solo album set to drop in the fall, the singer-songwriter teases listeners with new offering ‘Depends On Where You Stand.'

Crawford’s music and lyrics are drawn from a voracious appetite for reading as wide a variety of literature - from pulp to classics. Intimately involved in all aspects of his art; Crawford is not just a composer and lyricist, but a video and art director, the whole focused on the perfect expression of his musical vision.

Upcoming single ‘Depends On Where You Stand’ was recorded during sessions for his debut album in Antwerp. Elaborating on his interpretation of the track, Crawford tells us: “Two former lovers meet together in an art gallery and they’re out of awkward pleasantries to exchange. They play-out a Hollywood-esq sequence of trying not to be caught sneaking a glance, whilst attempting to give each other enough space by dancing around each other at a pace that is as excruciating as it is conspicuous.”

Godcaster - All the Feral Girls In The Universe

Grizzly Coast - Lonely Planet.

Late last summer, Alannah Kavanaugh (Grizzly Coast) and her partner bought a Volvo, named it Ducky, and headed west. On their month-long trip, the couple spent time in Badlands National Park, Yellowstone National Park, Oregon, Washington, The Cowichan Valley, Tofino, Vancouver, Banff + more. The footage from this trip was used for the "Lonely Planet" video.

Formerly performing as an acoustic singer-songwriter, the Toronto-based indie rock project (fronted by Alannah Kavanaugh) wears her expansion into full-band territory well. Written in 2018 when Kavanaugh was living alone, not very social, and being tossed about by her mental health, each track investigates solitude from different perspectives.

She never imagined that Party of One would drop during a time where others felt the same way on a mass scale. People need other people, and Kavanaugh hopes that these songs bring anyone who feels like she did a moment of comfort in an otherwise challenging period of disconnection.

Sera - Switch.

'SWITCH' - The brand new single by Welsh singer-songwriter SERA (Sera Zyborska).

Hannah Georgas - Just A Phase.

Last month, Toronto's Hannah Georgas announced her new LP All That Emotion (out September 4th on Brassland and Arts & Crafts) with the mesmeric lead single "Dreams." Produced by The National's Aaron Dessner, the album has already attracted an enthusiastic critical response with "Dreams" — along with a pair of pre-announce singles "That Emotion" and "Same Mistakes.

Hannah Georgas is sharing a new offering from the LP, a track called "Just A Phase," a warm, enveloping track that seamlessly melds propulsive electronics with Georgas' measured tones. With lyrics that focus on change, resiliency and anxiety the song finds an encompassing calm while presenting a buzzing hive of sonic ideas.

The accompanying video shares an insider’s view of the album's recording sessions and what came after. Primarily, it’s a tour of Dessner’s iconic Long Pond studio—which is recognizable from its portrayal on the cover art of The National’s Best Alternative Grammy winning album Sleep Well Beast, but also features footage from the year Georgas spent on the road singing in The National's touring band around the release of their 2019 LP I Am Easy To Find.

“We recorded All That Emotion in concentrated periods of time with breaks in between," says Georgas. "I had never made an album this way before. It was also the first time making an album outside of Canada which was a really unique experience. It was nice to make solo road trips to Upstate NY from Toronto knowing that the stretch of time recording will solely be dedicated to being as creative and as open as possible. Then last year, I had the opportunity to join The National on the road singing back ups for them and opening up in a few cities in Europe and North America.”

The video acts as a travelogue and journal of those before times, including footage of her long drives across the Canadian border — glimpses of tour life with the band — and ending with her listening to a test pressing of the forthcoming album.

The Sea The Sea - Fall Before The Climb.

Frequently lauded for their otherworldly vocal harmonies, heart-piercing lyrics, and unconventional song arrangements, The Sea The Sea – comprised of Chuck and Mira Costa - continue to make waves in the music industry.

The New York-based indie folk-pop duo is releasing “Fall Before the Climb,” the third single from their forthcoming album, Stumbling Home, that the band co-produced with Grammy and Tony award winner Todd Sickafoose (Hadestown, Anais Mitchell, Ani DiFranco, Andrew Bird).

“This song feels like a song we needed to hear when we wrote it,” shares Mira Costa.

Ramiro Fauve - I Give You All I Have.

Multifaceted artist Ramiro Fauve has released his first single, “I Give You All I Have”.  The new track is the first release off Ramiro Fauve’s twenty-six track double album, Where Rivers Cross Vols. 1 & 2, out on OCTOBER 6TH, 2020. The album seamlessly fuses his traditional country roots with a modern contemporary spin, tapping into Fauve’s musical inspirations as well as his vulnerable side.

With the help of LA-based composer Sam Glaser, Ramiro Fauve reminds listeners to give love their all, despite past experiences and broken hearts. Featuring poetic lyrics and familiar sounds of Bluegrass through guitar and drum, “I Give You All I Have” is an ode to those who feel petrified in the face of love. Ramiro Fauve sings that for the sake of your heart, you have to take a chance in love; you have to “lay it on the line.”

Son of the award-winning folk singer/songwriter Suni Paz (Smithsonian Folkways artist, NEA National Heritage Fellowship Award, CMN Magic Penny Award), Fauve sees himself simply as a storyteller. He is also known for his creative direction in the unique 1920’s themed lounge, The Edison, as well as in the renovation of the historic cafe, Clifton’s in Downtown, Los Angeles. Zoe & Cloyd - Hoffman's Hora / David's Frailach.

With their latest Organic Records single, Zoe & Cloyd reveal once again their unique ability to blend mountain music with the klezmer music legacy of Natalya Zoe Weinstein’s family on “Hoffman’s Hora/David’s Frailach.”

Incorporating two klezmer tunes — the first from a 1923 recording by xylophonist Jacob Hoffman, the second from sheet music in the handwriting of Weinstein’s grandfather — the medley marks a further refinement of the synthesis Weinstein and John Cloyd Miller have been exploring since the formation of Zoe & Cloyd, including “Berditchever Sher” and “Zisa Meydele” on 2019’s I Am Your Neighbor. Woven together with their authentic renditions of Appalachian old-time, folk and bluegrass songs, as well as their roots-inspired originals, it’s an integral part of the duo’s musical identity.

"These two klezmer instrumentals were in my grandfather, David Weinstein's, repertoire,” says Natalya. “He was a professional musician who emigrated from Russia (what is now Ukraine) in 1923, and made his living here in America playing music for weddings, functions, and events.” - “Horas and frailachs were dance tunes, and often were unnamed. This version of ‘Hoffman's Hora’ was named for an early recording of Jacob Hoffman and Kandel's Orchestra. I couldn't find another version of the frailach, except my grandfather's handwritten one, so we named it ‘David's Frailach.’”

Weinstein’s violin and Miller’s guitar echo the sparse arrangement of their 1923 source on the opening “Hoffman’s Hora” before upright bass and bluegrass banjo — supplied by band members Kevin Kehrberg and Bennett Sullivan — join in to provide propulsive rhythm and melodic embroidery to the strains of “David’s Frailach.”

“I think that bluegrass and klezmer blend together well because of their folk history and sensibilities,” Weinstein notes. “It’s a beautiful fusion!”

Bearcraft - Outside In The Morning Snow.

Bristol-based music collective Bearcraft return with their addictive and foreboding new single Outside in the Morning Snow. Taken from their forthcoming electronically charged LP, ‘Fabrefactions’, out on 4th September, the track explores the essence of acceptance of impending doom from fractious political factions or forces of nature. Speaking about the track, Dicky said, “When life, as Stephen Pinker puts it, is a battle against entropic forces, peril is always close. Morning Snow is about that, and about the solace that can be found in accepting this foreboding reality. ”

Amidst swirling synth patterns and ghostly harmonies, Bearcraft weaves a tapestry of vivid imagery, evoking a sense of drama and peril. Accompanying the release will be a video shot on VHS by Say Goodnight Films, which further accentuates the lyrical narrative with dreamy aesthetics. Speaking about the production process, Paul from Say Goodnight said, “Beginning with abstract concepts and building a narrative was helpful on where we could utilize the location of home/space we had during lockdown to create an original and dreamy video.”

Fabrefactions is Essex born musician/producer Dicky Moore aka Bearcraft’s lead protagonist’s second album following his debut Yestreen. Over the album’s ten tracks, Fabrefactions moves upriver along the Thames, from Margate, through Leigh-on-Sea and into the capital of England. That journey is mapped out in gorgeous organic electronics, in overheard ghost stories and half-remembered urban myths. Here are tales of runaways and banshees, estuary witches, acid trips and seafront car-cruising, set to sounds that evoke everything from bankside industry to underground dancehalls and the ambient push and pull of the shoreline.

Fabrefactions was written whilst staring out the window of a council flat in Dalston after a diagnosis of acute hearing loss; recorded in the corner of an artist’s studio in London Fields before being mixed next to the motorway in Bristol (over a period of ten years). The Equators - Nice To Be Nice.

This summer anthem stemmed when The Equators came back from their holiday in the Gambia with a local phrase and greeting they kept hearing: Nice to be Nice.

Back in their hometown of Birmingham, they wrote this song to promote the Joy and Happiness of Togetherness that resonates in the saying, a much needed upliftment for the summer, recorded at Oxygen Studios and Friendly Fire Music and produced by Robin Giorno.

The Equators have reformed 35 years after their cult album HOT! released at the height of Stiff Records in 81, and have been reconquering stages around the UK.

At the time it was written, band members Noah Prebish and Sabine Holler were also playing in the dream-pop group Barrie, and had asked Barrie Lindsay to contribute vocals and lyrics to a then-instrumental “Milk.” The result was a funky, bubblegum psych-pop jam ostensibly about “aliens going to a show,” says Lindsay. A track that had started out with a darker electro-pop backbone along the lines of New Order and Art of Noise had, with Barrie’s contributions, taken on a sunniness akin to Blondie and Tom Tom Club. The song debuts Psymon Spine’s new approach to fusing huge melodic hooks with left-of-center dance sounds, and hints at still more adventurous directions to come.

Psymon Spine fuse psychedelic pop and the deep grooves of dance music, the Brooklyn electronic pop outfit's origins date back to core members Noah Prebish and Peter Spears meeting in college and finding common ground in their artistic aims and influences. Eventually, Brother Michael joined Psymon Spine, as the trio hashed out the demos for what would become their 2017 debut and continued on that aesthetic mission by becoming figures in the Brooklyn dance scene through throwing the immersive art and dance parties via their Secret Friend series. Meanwhile, Prebish's work in dream-pop band Barrie—who broke out last year with the excellent debut Happy to Be Here following a string of buzz-making singles—led him to meet singer and multi-instrumentalist Sabine Holler, who also eventually joined Psymon Spine.

Psymon Spine's glimmering melodies bear resemblance to the pop smarts of Barrie—but Psymon Spine are on a whole different journey too, embracing and exploring left-field electronic sounds ranging from disco's high-energy rhythmic breakdowns to the upward build of early techno and motorik's indelibly incessant pulse. Psymon Spine put their own loopy and addictive stamp on the sounds of the past throughout, with surprises at every turn and the type of lush synth work that could only come from such brilliant students of dance music.

KnightressM1 - Polarity Integrate.

New genre-pushing SF Bay area prog rock/metal/experimental band KnightressM1 (KM1) on Friday dropped its 1st single, "Polarity Integrate" and its Official Music Video. Leveraging life-long classical training, KM1 founder/singer/violinist Emily Palen harnesses specific audio frequencies - for,perhaps, the 1st time in rock - to enhance her musical creations and conjure powerful effects on listeners. An example of how she does this. Also cool to virgin ears, KM1 processes/distorts violin sounds to produce sonic effects similar to that of a typical rock guitar.

Conceptually, “Polarity Integrate” interprets “polarity integrators”, those who've felt ample darkness in life, granting them healing capabilities. This is a taste of what’s ahead w/ debut LP “Dreams and Devastations” (Fall 2020), which was ecorded at Foo Fighters' Studio 606 w/ producer/engineer John “Lou” Lousteau (Foos, Iggy Pop, Joan Jett).

This is the perspective and inspiration from which musician Emily Palen brings her sonic creations into fruition. Founder and frontwoman of San Francisco Bay Area power trio KnightressM1, Palen creates work that floats somewhere above the footing of several music genres, including – but not limited to – hard rock, progressive metal, hardcore, electronica, trip-hop and experimental. That said, rather than pigeonholing KnightressM1’s sound into one or two insufficient sonic slots, she chooses to simply label her musical manifestations as ~ Expanse.

KnightressM1 (KM1) in name and thematic concept is a female galactic warrior who comes to Earth to bring justice, hunt corruption and restore truth. Within universal language, M1 is code for unity. KM1 is the vessel through which Palen creates and shares her unique contributions to what is more commonly known here on earth as the music industry. “KM1 is me imagining my whole consciousness in a superhero avatar, a limitless being. A universal example of who we can all be,” she explains.

0171 - Photograph.

Hackney, London based duo 0171 today release their new single "Photograph", the third track to be shared from upcoming EP 'Change Nothing'. Widely praised for their futuristic, experimental approach to electronic pop, the new single follows the previously released singles “Automatic” and "Follow".

Consisting of producers/singers Joe Bedell-Brill and Georgie Hoare, 0171 are breaking down societal conundrums and complexities; all played out to a backdrop of innovative, technology-warped pop.

"Photograph" pushes those musical boundaries further once more. Aligning with contemporaries including Rina Sawayama, Kero Kero Bonito and 100 gecs, Joe and Georgie knit together soaring string sections with jittering percussion and ghostly electronics, with the duo singing about empty nostalgia: "make me unsure and small / ghost of my memory".

“Photograph is inspired by looking at a photo of an ex," the band said. "A photo that records a moment when everything seemed perfect, but now it’s a lie, and it makes you feel strange, like you can’t really remember who you were in that photo, when you loved that person. Like a life that never happened. We’ve all picked up old photos like that we find in our bedroom, that make you sit down and feel sad for a time that is lost, even if you don’t regret the relationship ending. I’m (Joe) definitely someone who spends a lot of time thinking about my past, and the feelings that I’ll never get back. Georgie’s there in this song to tell me to get over it ffs.”

Once again channelling the pop music the pair grew up with, "Photograph" brings together the wide-screen nostalgia of artists like MGMT and M83, with joyous 90's plastic-pop-inspired melodies and songwriting flair. New single “Photograph” is lifted from 0171’s forthcoming second EP ‘Change Nothing’, the follow-up to their acclaimed (Dazed, Noisey/VICE, The Fader, Loud & Quiet, The Line Of Best Fit, i-D, Gorilla vs Bear, Clash, Highsnobiety etc) debut EP ‘Red Light’.

Borne out of frustration, the new EP explores feelings of stasis, the struggle between clinging on to what brings you down, and ultimately just letting go. 0171’s new single “Photograph” is out now, released July 16th. New EP ‘Change Nothing’ is out August 14th.
