Wy - Carly Opacic - Big Little Lions - Joem - The Hengles - Melissa Carper

Wy - Come Here.

Wy are a band strongest at their most vulnerable. The Malmö indie duo, Ebba and Michel Gustafsson Ågren, have showcased their musical skills across two albums, 2017’s Okay and 2019’s Softie which gained them recognition from KEXP, Line of Best Fit, NBHAP, Tonspion, CLASH and more as well as tours in Germany, Scandinavia and the UK. But what makes them stand out as a band is the raw, brutal emotion they capture in their music.

A Wy song at their best sounds like opening it all up, and letting the feelings flow where they will, letting the pain, anger, fear, hope and love steer the song. Those emotions are spun into the band’s skyscaping, cinematic sound, and turned into music that has a force behind it, a power that hits you, even when it's at its softest. And that power that illuminates the band’s songs is more present than ever on their new album Marriage which is out on May 7th, Come Here is the first single.

Marriage is the first record since signing to Rama Lama Records (Melby, Steve Buscemi's Dreamy Eyes, Chez Ali etc.) and the  sound of Wy moving forward and backwards at once. Leaving the more produced style of last album Softie behind, it turns to the simpler sound of their earlier work for music that’s rawer and sharper. On both the indie-rock and the pop songs of this album, there’s less between the listener and the heart of the song - this is music that’s very direct, both in theme and sound, with melodies that hit cleanly and leave nothing even trying to hide. It’s the work of a band that have grown into themselves and what they do, and making the strongest songs of their career.

That album, in a way, begins with a wedding. Ebba and Michel have been together since their schooldays, but a couple of years ago they tied the knot. The songs on Marriage have all been made since their wedding, and so in that sense the timing made it a natural title for a record that’s something of a scrapbook from the first two years of that marriage. But there’s also a deeper sense to it. Both in sound and theme, Marriage is more of a conceptual record than their earlier work. Ebba writes the band’s lyrics, and on the previous albums her themes were specific to her. But on this album, their relationship is at the heart of the songs. 

The lyrics have come from the experiences they’ve shared together, which they’ve then worked together into what they want to say, to each other and to everyone else.  “I have always written the lyrics”, says Ebba. “But this time they feel like our lyrics, and not just my diary set to our music. We've talked a lot with each other about what we want to say. About who we are and where we can find our place in the world. The title has been in place since we started, and that was because a lot of the songs revolved around our relationship since we got married. Not so much the relationship between us, but more about the internal conflicts that appear when you’re in a long-term, safe relationship, where you’re really sure about each other, but you’re not sure about yourself”.

The journey to the record has been a difficult one. The band started work on Marriage not intending to make an album. They went into the studio with the idea of making an EP, wrote some songs, but couldn’t quite nail what they were going for - the songs didn’t quite feel right together. So they went into overdrive, wrote a bunch more songs, and suddenly found themselves with over 20, and within those 20 what they realised was an album.

Carly Opacic - Luna.

From Carly - A little bit about my music and the song: This is a song on a two part album called Luna. The first part of the two part album is about a break up and the second part of the album to come is about finding yourself again. This specific song is a precursor to the break up songs that are in the rest of the album as it explains the break up while its happening. 

I was influenced by a poem about a break up that explained it with space and then another quote about how the sun sees your body, but the moon sees your soul. I resonated with this and have always been obsessed with the moon so it just clicked perfectly.

A little bit about myself, I originate from Orange County, California but moved to Nashville 6 years ago to pursue music. Since then I have found my sound. I released an EP in 2016 when I was still trying to find myself that is more folk. In 2019, I released a single finally finding my sound. In 2020, I released 3 more singles and am now finally releasing part of the album that I have been working on for 3 years. 

I try to live as authentically as possible every day and try to portray that through my music. My producer's name is Brandon Mingo and he puts the world behind every one of my songs that you hear. I don't know what I would do without him.

Big Little Lions - Never Mind The Weather.

Big Little Lions have been described as ‘a blissful marriage of new folk and
sophisticated pop’. Prolific songwriting, infectious folk-pop style, and an
o ffbeat, memorable live show. This award winning duo consists of Helen Austin
and Paul Otten who, despite living thousands of miles apart, have found a way
to connect and create music together. Despite being in two di fferent countries
they have found common ground to share their message.

Call it destiny, or call it fate, call it a necessary progression for these modern
times. Helen lives in British Columbia, Canada and Paul lives in Cincinnati, OH.
But the distance provides the necessity to create in a new way. Using
technology as their ally and their di fferences as their strength.

Their monthy single releases are their way of getting through this pandemic
while all the usual album cyle release plans don’t make sense anymore. Their
music is jam-packed with emotion and tight harmonies, the sound of two
people working side-by-side.

Joem - Copper Ground.

Johanna Mäkilä-Manninen, aka JOEM, born in 1994, is an independent artist, musician and an English BA graduate. Starting her musical journey as a saxophone player, she has graduated from Sibelius upper secondary school (2013), as well as from Pop & Jazz Conservatory (2018) in Helsinki. During her studies in the Conservatory and University of Helsinki, Joem slowly transitioned from saxophone to singing and songwriting due to a long period of chronic neuropathic pain in the arms. Living with physical pain and the eventual depression led to her childhood dream of being a music maker and singer.

In 2017, after gigging as a saxophonist and singing in a local church, Joem started slowly but surely taking steps towards her own artistry. Thus far the journey has included writing and releasing her own songs, making two music videos, gigging around Helsinki with her band, as well as winning New York-based celebrity vocal coach Cari Cole’s biannual singing competition with her single “Naive Heart” in August, 2019. This opened a door for her to be coached by Cari via Zoom, and to participate in a songwriting circle with other artists.

At the moment she works part-time as a life auxiliary/ personal assistant for seniors, and is working on her new releases for 2021 while living with her husband in Helsinki. Her goal is to create a unique path as an artist and a creative entrepreneur.

Melissa Carper - Makin' Memories.

Melissa Carper the singer/songwriter/upright bassist releases "Makin' Memories," today. It's the first single from her forthcoming LP Daddy's Country Gold (out on March 19). 

Ever the wanderer, Melissa started performing at age 12 with her family's band in Nebraska, considers Arkansas a touchstone, and has made her home in (and busked her way through) New York City, New Orleans, Austin, Nashville, and now she's back in Austin for a spell. She is a member of bands like Sad Daddy, The Carper Family, and has a duo with her girlfriend Rebecca Patek called Buffalo Gals.

The album was co-produced by Time Jumpers bassist Dennis Crouch along with Andrija Tokic, recorded at Andrija's studio The Bomb Shelter here in Nashville, and features guests like Sierra Ferrell, Brennen Leigh, Lloyd Green, and more. It's a collection of jazz-infused western swing and old-time country gems, real music about real life from a real gal, for folks who are looking for the real thing.

Mo Kenney - Bernice - Katy Kirby

Mo Kenney - Hard On You.

“Hard On You”, the third release from the upcoming Covers record, is one of the sparser offerings in Mo Kenney’s series of cover songs, and for good reason. A staple of and standout in the wildly prolific Daniel Romano’s songwriting quiver, the tune conjures a frustrated snarl, giving hell to someone who’s overstayed their welcome. 

Kenney’s lonesome, unadorned version captures the psychic exhaustion of dealing with human fallibility and protecting loved ones, using nothing but earthy acoustic fingerpicking and her weary, raspy voice.

“Hard On You” follows “Game of Pricks” (“a fittingly stripped-back and haunting number for these times” says Indie88) and Mo’s lonesome Patsy Cline classic “You Belong To Me”. Says Kenney of “Hard On Your”, “I’ve been a big Daniel Romano fan since I first heard this song. It was so nice to hear a modern country song that was reminiscent of the old stuff. The songwriting is so good, I was excited to strip it down so the lyrics really shine. Recorded in front of one mic at the New Scotland Yard.” Mo continues to perform when and where possible.

Bernice - It's Me, Robin.

In December, Toronto's Bernice announced their forthcoming LP Eau de Bonjourno, the follow up to their celebrated 2018 LP Puff: In the air without a shape. Now the band are sharing the album's second single "It's Me, Robin".

"This song for me, lyrically, was an exercise in trying to be as blunt and transparent as possible with myself," Bernice's leader Robin Dann explains to NPR's Bob Boilen. "It starts out in a non-poetic way: "it's me, Robin. you don't really know me. I thought if I just expressed this you might let me be me" - which I think is a universal desire. We all just kind of want to feel permission to exist, unconditionally, not based on any career milestones or whatever personal successes or failures. We want every life to inherently have value. This song, in a really playful way, (referencing ducks and potatoes) addresses the not-so-straightforward feelings that we have in life, but ultimately asks the big question, who are you? We’re all just in this beautiful, endless search for joy."

Eau de Bonjourno is the Bernice's first collaboration with producer Shahzad Ismaily, the acclaimed multi-instrumentalist who has worked with artists as varied as Laurie Anderson, Lou Reed, Elvis Costello, Iggy Pop, John Zorn, and Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy. While their genre reconstruction remains distinctly Bernice, Dann’s lyrics bring a newfound focus to storytelling in the present moment, compassionately meeting ourselves where we are, and finding joy in spaces that are familiar but ever changing.

Eau de Bonjourno, according to Dann, “openly plays with the shape of a pop song,” drawing on the band members’ backgrounds in jazz, subverting rhythmic formulas, and resting in grooves that sit just outside of predictable. Instead of letting instruments take extended solos, the tone is set on opener “Groove Elation” with brief blurts of synthesized sax, patient passages of space, or clusters of beats, tenderly held together by Dann and Williams’ intimate vocals. The album’s sound is experimental in its truest definition, chopped up like musique concrète and then delicately placed back together with the loving touch of a scrapbook collagist.

“We have an impulse to open doors that you might not expect, and that translates from groove to melody to lyric,” says Dann. “Phil and Thom have this strong aversion to building a beat that sits there in front of you and does exactly what you expect it to do. We come out of so many musical traditions and are trying to make something that’s not a direct descendent of any of them. We’re trying to make the music that feels like us right now.”

Katy Kirby - Juniper.

Katy Kirby has released the third single from her highly anticipated debut album Cool Dry Place out February 19 on Keeled Scales (via Secretly Distribution), the critically acclaimed indie label home to the likes of Tenci, Buck Meek, Sun June, Twain and more.

Kirby’s ability to blend wit with heart over inventive, affecting melodies has positioned her on shortlists for the most anticipated albums in 2021 by Vulture, Vice, Stereogum, The Line of Best Fit, and Paste Magazine. Today’s release follows ”Traffic!,” a buoyant rumination on privilege, as well as ”Cool Dry Place,” a clever flip of the Tylenol package advisory into a plea for human compassion and acceptance. Bob Boilen of NPR All Songs Considered has praised Katy for ”putting her own twist on pop” and tastemakers at Consequence of Sound, Under The Radar, Earmilk, Austin Town Hall and more have echoed enthusiasm.

Says Katy: This is a song about motherhood, mostly. It sometimes seems like there’s far more material written on how dads can be terrifying and awful, or everyone is just less surprised about it. I’m uncommonly open and close with my mom, (and she’s asked several times if it’s about her — if you’re reading this Lisa, I swear, it’s not!!), but I was trying to work out how many distinct ways that sort of dynamic can uniquely harm. I wound up thinking a lot about vacancy, sort of how abandonment can happen even if someone technically sticks around. I heard Greta Gerwig say in an interview about Ladybird that “nobody doesn’t have a complicated relationship with their mother.” That feels pretty reasonable to me as far as super-broad statements go, and is maybe (probably) part of what scares me to death about raising a kid.

Wyndow - Katey Morley - Sturle Dagsland - Erica Knox - David Olney & Anana Kaye

Wyndow - Take My Picture.

Wyndow is the brand-new psychedelic-pop project of revered singer-songwriters Lavinia Blackwall and Laura J Martin. Today, the duo has announced their collaboration via the sharing of astral new single ‘Take My Picture’ alongside the news that they are working on an album together.

The pair first met whilst playing on the same bill at Moseley Folk Festival in Birmingham and hit it off instantly over a shared love of the music of Robert Wyatt. Over the years that followed, their paths crossed several more times, Lavinia and her partner collaborated on new material with Laura and Laura contributed flute parts to Lavinia’s debut solo album in 2019. “As the world took a nose-dive, I wanted to lose myself in a new project” explained Laura. “I was listening to Japanese environmental music and wanted to present those atmospheres alongside two voices. I mentioned it to Lavinia, and we formed a plan to start working on a cover.”

“We collaborated on a cover of Robert Wyatt's song 'Free Will and Testament. After recording, it felt like we’d found a new combination and we wanted to develop it further, so we continued sending ideas back and forth” explained Lavinia.

To while away the hours in a closed down country, the pair began working on a new set of songs together. Writing and recording separately, with contributions from Iwan Morgan (Cate Le Bon, Meilyr Jones, Euros Childs) and Marco Rea (Euros Childs, Alex Rex, Lavinia Blackwall), it was a completely new process for both artists. “I see this project as a set of musical postcards sent across the wires from Liverpool to Clydebank” says Laura. “The cards arrive rain damaged and dog eared on the other side and end up in new fantastical shapes”. ‘Take my Picture’ the ethereal first cut, talks of shadow lives and half stories. Fragments of time filtered through a celestial lens.  With ‘Take My Picture’, Laura J Martin and Lavinia Blackwall build enveloping soundscapes around winding serpentine voices. Pulse heavy minimalist piano lines provide a bed for vertiginous flute solos, multi-tracked bass, bouzouki and autoharp to intertwine, in wild combinations. “My 4-year-old nephew described it as a nightmare, which I took as a compliment” joked Laura.

Wyndow’s new sound is an exciting next step for the duo, both of whom have enjoyed abundant success in their careers to date. Laura J Martin has so far released three critically acclaimed albums. Her latest, ‘On The Never Never’, was recorded in Nashville with members of Lambchop, Silver Jews and Jesus Lizard. A mercurial and bewitching live performer who interweaves layers of vocals, flute, mandolin and electronics; Laura and her band have toured regularly across the UK and Europe and supported acts such as PJ Harvey, Teenage Fanclub, Cate Le Bon and performed and collaborated extensively with Euros Childs. Lavinia Blackwall’s work with prolific Glaswegian psych-folk outfit Trembling Bells has earnt her a reputation as one of the best voices in the scene, many critics having likened her singing prowess to that of Sandy Denny. Along with Trembling Bells she has released seven full-length albums and performed as the backing band to folk legends Bonnie Prince Billy and The Incredible String Band’s Mike Herron. Her 2020 debut solo album ‘Muggington Lane End’ was extremely well received by the press.

Katey Morley - Little Man.

Katey Morley has released her eagerly anticipated EP “Hearts & Heads & Thoughts & Deeds” on Jan. 1st, 2021. This five song gem opens with a euphonious and bombastic Folktronica tune, ambles through Country Noir to end on a haunting piano ballad that you won’t soon forget. 

The single “Little Man” will be released on Jan 19th, but you won’t find it on most of the major streaming services. The Canadian singer-songwriter is taking a stance: “My wish for 2021 is the healing of the music industry, and I believe it starts with releasing music only to services that support and pay musicians fairly. 

I can no longer gripe about being exploited by Spotify, yet continue to give my music to them.” She also believes that consumers are starting to understand how streaming negatively impacts music creators, and they too have begun to demand a fair alternative to support their favourite independent artists

Sturle Dagsland - Dreaming.

Sturle Dagsland – Sturle is sharing his new single “Dreaming” today and I wondered if this single/album might appeal for support at Beehive Candy?

He has his self-titled debut album release out on February 5 and we've got some support in the pipeline from Bandcamp Daily, MOJO, Under The Radar Magazine, etc so far. It's a pretty diverse record with some very heavy, wild parts and other much more ethereal sections – this latest single, “Dreaming”, is definitely a cornerstone of the latter with hints of Björk, Sigur Rós and FKA twigs shining through. It was actually recorded in a lighthouse off the coast of the North Sea using South American flutes.

A bit on Sturle – Sturle's got a unique sound that blends the world of experimental-pop with avant-garde and metal. Areas of the new record touch on the intensity of Death Grips and Sunn O))) whereas others point towards flamboyant pop experimentalism. Sturle has just been announced for a string of Spring 2021 dates opening for Finnish act, Oranssi Pazuzu; previously he has performed at Iceland Airwaves, SXSW and Tallinn Music Festival. In recent times he's done some film scoring for the award-winning animator, Eirik Heggen.

Sturle helms the project with his brother, Sjur, and following previous tips at The Quietus, Drowned in Sound, and Vice, they put the record together over the last couple of years, using over 40 different and unique instruments to create the sound – more details on these in the press release below, but they include Zimbabwean finger harps, Armenian duduks and Norwegian billy goat horns. Themes on the album reflect the duo's culture and ancestry – Norse Paganism arrives on "Blot" whilst "Noaidi" references some of their mother's indigenous Sami roots. The record was recorded at a number of different locations, these include abandoned industrial estates in Russia, Soviet Navy ships in Eastern Europe, a remote lighthouse in the North Sea, and the Norwegian mountaintops.

Erica Knox - Running Inside Of My Brain.

I'm super excited to share "Running Inside of My Brain" with you. Produced by Kadeema's Tal Vaisman, the song is available now on all streaming platforms.

Inspiration for this song came from a relationship that wasn't meant to be. Start to finish, there were so many red flags and obvious signs that were ignored. I'm always looking for that fairytale ending, hoping that even when it's unrealistic, it will somehow work out. And I wanted that so bad with this person, but it just wasn't happening, no matter how hard I tried. Although this person was wrong for me, I still had to grieve the relationship, and accept that I have to surrender to these feelings until they've fully healed.

I reflect on that time after a breakup where even after you've made peace and come to terms with it, something brings you back as if it happened yesterday. You relive it all, imagining what that could have been, and everything that went wrong.

"Running Inside of My Brain" serves as a reminder that you've gotta put yourself first when it comes to love. It's not worth losing yourself to be with someone else, no matter how good the ending could be.

David Olney & Anana Kaye - My Favorite Goodbye.

If the futile longing to reach back through memory and grasp what is in the past could be set to music, it would sound like Whispers and Sighs. Over the course of 13 tracks, David Olney and Anana Kaye manage to craft a journey that amounts to far more than just another Americana album. This is to be expected with Olney, an acclaimed songwriter responsible for more than 20 solo albums and songs covered by and/or co-written with the likes of Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, and Linda Ronstadt, among many others. Further, just as Townes Van Zandt reportedly saw something special in him, Olney felt a similar admiration and kinship towards Kaye, a smoky-voiced Americana darling whose star is assuredly on the rise in Nashville, and her husband and musical partner Irakli Gabriel, both of whom are originally from the country of Georgia.

On Whispers and Sighs, due out March 26, 2021 on Schoolkids Records, the pair create a unique, sonic landscape that blends the haunting sensuality of European music with the raw intimacy of Americana, weaving raucous, unapologetic rock anthems like “Lie to Me, Angel” and “Last Days of Rome” with sparse, introspective ballads such as “Tennessee Moon” and the record’s title track. All of the songs were written by the trio of Olney, Kaye, and Irakli. In addition, longtime Olney collaborator and hit songwriter John Hadley earns co-writing credits on a few.

Brett Ryan Stewart (Wirebird Productions) produced and mixed the record at his studio in Nashville. Stewart is another rising star in his field, having garnered Grammy consideration for projects he’s helmed, along with notable TV and film placements. Richard Dodd, recipient of the Best Engineer Grammy Award for Tom Petty’s Wildflowers, mastered the project. Whispers and Sighs features an impressive array of Nashville musicians and vocalists — perhaps most notably Olney’s long-time musical collaborator and bassist Daniel Seymour, and bassist Chris Donohue, who has worked with such artists as Emmylou Harris, Robert Plant, and Elvis Costello.

All in all, Whispers and Sighs is an Americana record that explores what it means to be human. Over its course, Olney and Kaye take turns leading the listener through intimate self-portraits, myths, and tales of historical fiction, all in an effort to illustrate the various devices we use to cope with our own impermanence. Though the project deals heavily in weighty, existentialist themes, the prevailing message proves to be a celebration of human connection, friendship, and love. As Olney put it in 2019, “We have no idea where the songs come from, but they bring a peace of mind like an old photograph of home. Wherever that may be.”

And while it’s hard to escape the seeming cosmic significance of the album as posthumous Olney release, at no point does this create the air of morbidity; rather, it lends the project a bittersweet ambiance. According to Anana and Irakli, mere moments after hitting save on the final mixes, the phone rang with news of David’s passing. This seems tragically fitting; for what is found on Whispers and Sighs is a collection of songs into which two artists and friends clearly poured the full extent of their souls. Within it is an undeniable reminder that David Olney’s extraordinary legacy can never fade, while Anana Kaye’s star grows deservedly brighter by the day.

Classic Water - Kindsight - Meg Webb - Zoe & Cloyd - Hailey Whitters

Classic Water - Tomorrow.

Dutch indie band Classic Water return with their fourth single Tomorrow. A song about desperate times and corresponding desperate measures, but as the lyrics say: “tomorrow this will all be gone.” A soothing thought at the start of this new year.

The music video is based on the artwork designed by visual artist Viktoryia Shydlouskaya-Dijk and animated by Classic Water’s keys player Lotte van Leengoed.

Classic Water introduced themselves in 2020 with singles Living Likeness, It’s Never Easy and Carthage. Debut album Concrete Pleasures will be released on March 12th 2021.

Tomorrow is a song about someone driven to desperate deeds and is partly inspired by the Talking Heads’ Listening Wind. The narrator leads the listener to the brink of the deed in the first half of the song, after which a long instrumental part follows where multiple melodies and rhythms combine into something like a hypnotic stretch of endless highway.

The songs of Classic Water bring to mind driving through dusty backroads of deserted villages, thinking back on what once was but will never be again. The surreal words of singer Tom Gerritsen are guided by stretches of intertwining melodies, alternated with brief bursts of rock and roll. In an earlier life, Tom released folk music as The T.S. Eliot Appreciation Society, playing over 180 shows in Europe. Seeing Classic Water perform live is a visceral experience. The debut album Concrete Pleasures was recorded and produced by Stacy Parrish (T Bone Burnett, Alison Krauss & Robert Plant) in a 14th century farmhouse in Sweden.

Kindsight - How I Feel.

Kindsight is a new act from the Copenhagen indie scene and the first act outside of Sweden to sign with Rama Lama Records (Melby, Chez Ali,  Steve Buscemi's Dreamy Eyes etc.). Last fall, the young quartet released the two very promising debut tracks 'Who Are You' and ' Terminal Daze'. Two warm, nostalgic and atmospheric indie pop songs that got them praise such as "your new favourite band". Now, the slow-burner 'How I Feel' follows and expands the sound of this promising act.

Kindsight are Nina, Søren, Anders and Johannes and formed out of Nina and Sørens shared love for The Sugarcubes. According to the band, the two of them then recruited drummer Johannes to "drag him out of an unsettling obsession with jazz-music" and bass player Anders was chosen "only because of his looks and his ability to fit into small bags.".

Meg Webb - What's The Logic.

Meg Web who is sharing her new video and single "What's the Logic." The track was co-produced by the legendary Jason Falkner (Beck, Jellyfish), in which he also lent a hand on drums, bass and additional synths. The video was directed and shot by Jessica Calleiro and filmed by Calleiro and Matt Boman.

Meg grew up as a classically trained multi-instrumentalist learning violin, piano, harp, cello, synths, bass, flute, tenor guitar and a recently added marimba. Growing up as a competitive dancer (you can see some of her smooth moves in the video), as well as a softball, basketball and soccer player. Raised in Woods Cross, Utah, until  2009, when she was 16, she completed her GED and fled to Arizona (pretending to be a foreign exchange student from Czechia so she could hang out with her cousin at her school) to escape Mormonism and play shows with her bandmate who lived there.

Meg Shares: “The inspiration was an anti-inspiration-where all hope and trust flew out a window and I was starting from scratch with everything~ ideas about people, the internal and external workings. A question to and about them and myself."

Webb moved to Laguna Beach in 2011 after hitchhiking through, deeming it her personal paradise. There she was a street performer for 4 years, and in Los Angeles,before landing her first commercial. Then she started learning about analog sound engineering in San Francisco. Now back in LA, Meg Webb is in full force with her gorgeous and dreamy blend of indie goodness.

Zoe & Cloyd - Paper Crowns.

Following the exuberant, traditional bluegrass of their last single, Organic Records’ Zoe & Cloyd return with a sweet, original take on another kind of tradition: the enduring theme of a parent’s love. Written and sung by the semi-eponymous duo of Natalya Zoe Weinstein (fiddle) and John Cloyd Miller (guitar), “Paper Crowns” is classically framed in a direct address to their daughter, even as its contemporary language and asymmetric rhythms reveal it as thoroughly modern.

The track is further testimony to the sensitivity of Zoe & Cloyd’s bandmates, Kevin Kehrberg (bass) and Bennett Sullivan (banjo), whose sympathetic playing offers just the right support for the song’s bright imagery of “paper crowns and dancing curls.”

“We started writing ‘Paper Crowns’ on our daughter's fifth birthday, a cold and rainy day in February,” notes Weinstein. “I was feeling nostalgic for her younger years, as five felt like a big turning point in her transition from toddlerhood to school age. Little did we know how much her life (and ours) would change in the coming year, and how the loss of early childhood innocence would be especially poignant as the pandemic set in. But no matter her age and come what may, she'll always be our little girl."

Hailey Whitters - The Ride (feat. Jordan Davis).


Rising country star Hailey Whitters announces LIVING THE DREAM, a deluxe edition of her critically-acclaimed 2020 album THE DREAM featuring five new songs, will be released on February 26 via Pigasus/Big Loud/Songs & Daughters. The deluxe album finds Whitters moving from fantasizing about “the dream” to actually living it, calling upon her close friends and collaborators Brent Cobb, Jordan Davis, Hillary Lindsey, Little Big Town, Lori McKenna and Trisha Yearwood to contribute vocals to the fresh tracks.

Jillette Johnson - Renée Reed - Still Corners - Rob Kovacs - Bandits on the Run

Jillette Johnson - Forgive Her.

Jillette Johnson shares “Forgive Her,” the latest single off her forthcoming album It’s a Beautiful Day and I Love You (out February 12). Striking an intimately reflective tone, "Forgive Her" is a meditation on breaking cycles that asks us to show compassion and acceptance towards ourselves and others. Audiofemme featured the track this morning, saying “The song opens with gentle chanting and piano chords that pull at your heartstrings, then escalates into angelic singing reminiscent of a parent teaching a child.”

"This song was inspired by the complicated dynamics of mother-daughter relationships, and the importance of generational healing,” explains Johnson. “It’s about nurturing and embracing the hurt parts of ourselves, and recognizing that we are all just little kids trying to connect with each other and feel ok.”

Produced by Joe Pisapia and written entirely by Jillette, It’s a Beautiful Day and I Love You injects her intimate, piano-written songs with irreverent lyrics, buoyant pop melodies and a shot of guitar-driven, alt-rock muscle. The album has already garnered early acclaim from American Songwriter, Refinery29 and Rolling Stone, who describes the debut single “I Shouldn’t Go Anywhere” as “a spaced-out trip that recalls Harry Nilsson or Elton John at his most decadent.” Johnson has released three other singles – a rollicking ode to exes named “Annie,” an irreverent meditation on acceptance aptly titled “What Would Jesus Do” and a kiss-off to past relationships called “Graveyard Boyfriend.”

Renée Reed - Fast One. 

The first single, "Fast One," from Lafayette, Louisiana musician Renée Reed's self-titled debut album due March 26, 2021 via Keeled Scales, has just been shared.

Self-labeled "dream-fi folk from the Cajun prairies," Renée released her first two songs in 2020-- "Out Loud" in May and "Until Tomorrow" in July, which Gorilla vs. Bear described as "an effortless, inspired union of the haunting folk music that Reed was raised on and a lilting, lost '60s French-pop gem."

Renée's statement on "Fast One" and her album:

"Full of anger over the shallow, shitty behavior of certain acquaintances I’ve had over the last few years, people who assume they know more about me than I do. But I leave things open to change and growth."

"This album is a collection of songs about toxic relationships, seeing ghosts, ancestral baggage and blessings, and daydreaming about love. It is about certain feelings and experiences I’ve had over my life coming to fruition in the past three years. Still Corners - White Sands.

Still Corners will release their 5th album on 22nd January. Following on from the huge acclaim they have received for their previously shared singles ‘Crying’ and the record’s title-track, Still Corners have now released ‘White Sands’ from their highly-anticipated fifth album THE LAST EXIT, out on 22nd January 2021 via Wrecking Light Records.

A desert-noir soundtrack in miniature, ‘White Sands’ tells a classic ghost story of a phantom who roams the dunes and highways scaring travellers as they cross the land. Tessa Murray croons over a quick beat, clean-tone guitar and shimmering atmospherics.

The Last Exit will be the 5th album from Still Corners after a 13-year career that started back on Sub Pop Records in 2007.

Rob Kovacs - Bitter Memory.

Indie-rock singer-songwriter and pianist Rob Kovacs debuts the new single, “Bitter Memory.” The song is the latest offering from Kovacs’ forthcoming solo debut album, Let Go, to be released on February 12th. With its ambitious compositional palette and hauntingly potent songcraft, the album affirms Kovacs as a fully focused and steadfast artist, evincing a commitment and creative persistence rarely seen in our ever more short attention span society.

Let Go tells the story of one relationship, in chronological order. “The songs are about love, longing, loss, desire, confusion, acceptance, pain, the struggle to let go – all that fun stuff,” Kovacs states. “Bitter Memory” concludes the album, and reflects the struggle to move on. It was written after Kovacs received an email from the ex-love that inspired the album. “Every so often she’d reach out and it’d bring me right me back. I felt weak and powerless and, in turn, angry. The reality though, which I didn’t want to admit, was I still longed for her. Seeing and reading her messages felt good. I still hadn’t let go.” Musically, the song has a different feel from the rest of the album, complete with being in a different key, indicating that things have changed over time. “There is no chorus,” Kovacs elaborates. “Just a repeating pattern of chords that last longer and get more intense with each repetition until reaching a boiling point and release and ending in the soft, resigned ending.”

Named “Best Pianist/Keyboardist” by the Cleveland Free Times, Kovacs has been widely hailed for his shape-shifting musical experimentalism, spanning history-making classical feats and audacious recreations of videogame soundtracks to crafting mesmerizing indie rock both as bandleader and now, at long last, solo artist. Kovacs has invested more than a decade in the creation of this solo debut, a brave and bittersweet song cycle written in the years following an intensely impactful romantic relationship and then recorded over an even longer span.

Bandits on the Run - We Battle Giants.

Bandits on the Run, the NYC-based indie-pop trio anchored by three-part harmonies and unique instrumentation, announce their forthcoming EP, Now Is The Time, dropping 5/7/2021, with the release of the new single, “We Battle Giants".

In 2020, the Bandits were poised for some of their biggest performances yet - as official SXSW artists, as well as at The Kennedy Center in DC and New York’s Webster Hall - and vocalist/guitarist Adrian Blake Enscoe was slated to appear in Swept Away, the musical based on the music of The Avett Brothers. Like most of the world, they saw their plans quickly deconstructed when the COVID-19 pandemic struck. 

However, in true Bandit style, they immediately started looking for ways to find the silver living. “As Bandits, we’ve always tried to be bearers of light, positivity, and community,” explains Regina Strayhorn (vocals, accordion, melodica, assorted toy instruments). So, after sequestering themselves in North Carolina finalizing new material, they took a socially-distanced road trip west to record at the famed Bear Creek Studio in Washington State, with producer Ryan Hadlock (The Lumineers, Brandi Carlile, Vance Joy). 

“Having Bandits on the Run out to Bear Creek Studio was a really wonderful experience,” Hadlock says. “Their songwriting and interwoven vocal harmonies are beautiful and inspiring. Working with the Bandits on these songs during the pandemic this summer was definitely a bright spot in an otherwise difficult and dark year.” Of this latest single, he continues, “When I heard the demo for ‘We Battle Giants,’ I was like, ‘PLEASE let me produce that song.’ I just love the way their three voices lock in during the chorus. The Bandits are a powerful and inspiring colorful trio of magic.”

Jo Yonderly - Dead inside the inside.

The long time missing underground artist Jo Yonderly has finally been found! After years of searching, the man behind the mystical and enchanting demos that reached the Rama Lama HQ some time ago have been tracked down in Malmö, Sweden. 

This with great help from Djoana Djones who is currently making a documentary about the journey, the first teaser is available to see here. ‘Dead inside the inside’ is the first track to reach the public’s ears from a forthcoming debut album.

‘Dead inside the inside’ is something you’d imagine to be a classic, but hard to define from what decade, or is it even from the future? It hits you right from the start and as the title line echoes in eternity you really get the feeling of being “dead inside”.

We asked Jo Yonderly to describe Dead inside the inside for this press release and he said: "I generally don't like blogs and papers, and so it evens out, but if you have to quote me, tell them it's about the abscense of mental health".

Mark Elliott - Talk to Yourself.

Mark Elliott's “Talk to Yourself” The Runaway Home member’s latest single begins with a mellow guitar intro evocative of Chris Stapleton’s Jazzmaster on “Tennessee Whiskey.”  The groove will immediately bring you into the bluesy, guitar-forward, country space occupied by Keith Urban’s “Blue Ain’t Your Color” and Hunter Hayes’ “Rainy Season.” However, “Talk to Yourself” is far from a sad song about a downhearted girl or a failing relationship. 

It’s a heartfelt, comforting waltz that reassures you “it’ll all work out if you try” and treat yourself like a good mother or kind friend would. With his earnest, soulful voice, Elliott comes across as exactly such a figure. Accompanied by American Idol alum Melinda Doolittle, the Americana singer-songwriter delivers just the track we need to help us recover from a long and hectic year.


Mark Elliott is a Nashville-based singer, songwriter, author, and principal vocalist/guitarist for the Americana band Runaway Home. He has written for some of Nashville’s top publishing houses, including Sony-Tree, Maypop, and Bluewater Music. He’s a winner of the coveted Kerrville New Folk Award and had songs covered by both indie and major-label artists. Mark’s book, The Sons of Starmount: Memoir of a Ten-Year-Old Boy, is out in paperback and audiobook.

Turkey The Bird - Cave Rave.

Turkey The Bird, the band feat. Andre Manella from Switzerland is on guitar, is New Zealand's answer to Simon & Garfunkel (if & was a musician too). They write catchy folk songs with stunning rich melodies. Songs that tell uplifting stories about love and life. You can hear them on their new single 'Cave Rave'. But this time, life proved its quite dramatic side. 

Cave Rave is based on a true story. It's a song about a sailing trip through the Pacific in 2014, when their boat «Sol» was hit by a storm. The trio remembers those days in serious trouble: «Our yacht was beached and scrapped. Whilst waiting for rescue, a number of small people gave us refuge in their dwelling. It was a home carved by hand into the side of a cliff, and this is a song in their memory.»

Turkey The Bird are spread around the globe, creating beautiful three part harmonies and toe tapping rhythms: Andre Manella from Switzerland is on guitar, bass and percussion. Adrian Whelan from Ireland is on guitar, bass and spoons, and Sol Bear Coulton, the token kiwi, on Banjo.

Souly Us - Everything Has Changed.

Rising Australian country duo Souly Us have released the music video for their latest single “Everything Has Changed.” The video, which features gorgeous scenes of members Ben and Kate performing on the Aussie shores, made its Australian debut on MTV and CMT last night. The corresponding single was recorded by the couple in lockdown and was released this past December on all digital and streaming platforms.

“Everything Has Changed” combines the duo’s signature country sound with a strong indie influence to create a truly unique and captivating soundscape. The song opens up with bright acoustic guitar and clean electric guitar accompanied by a locked-in rhythm section. Kate’s vocals provide a beautiful and soothing melody to complement the instrumentals. Considering how mellow the beginning of the song is, it feels fitting that the corresponding scenes of the music video are set in the couple’s home.

The chorus finds the 2020 Akademia Music Award winners barefoot on the rocky beaches of their hometown singing about how “everything has changed.”

Loumy - What I Need.

Her last singles made it into the playlists of various radios, even abroad. Now Zurich-based Loumy is following this success with «What I Need», her intense dreampop-inspired ep. Rarely you hear such intimate and dreamy music coming from Switzerland, in the feel of Heather Nova.

«What I need», the leading-song of the ep, is about self-sabotage and represents a conversation between Loumy's reasonable, rational side and her emotional, impulsive one. While the emotional side has known for a long time that certain things are not working, she still is holding on them, looking for reasons and explanations. Meanwhile all rational warnings are set to fail.

Loumy's career started writing her own songs at the age of 15. Soon she founded the duo Tales of Two with a friend. First concerts and an EP followed. For three years now Loumy has been pursuing her solo career, which led to the release of her first single «December» in 2019.

Winning a singer-songwriter competition of HoneyBee Records, Loumy got the chance to record one of her own songs with five other artists in early 2020: «Moonlight» once marked the beginning of her career. One she's now continuing with her new ep «What I need».

William The Conqueror - Quiet Life.

Acclaimed UK band William The Conqueror announce their new album Maverick Thinker will release on March 5th through Chrysalis Records. The band also shared their new single "Quiet Life," a charming, slow-building lament that broadens out like a rolling landscape with a fuzz and crunch that gets toned down for something altogether more reflective.

Of the new single, frontman Ruarri Joseph stated, "With 'Quiet Life,' we wanted to step outside the sound of the trio and build some walls, add some layers for this one. It's a trippy, fuzzy wander down someone else's memory lane, so we went cinematic."

"The video is a time capsule of a very strange morning back in March 2020," he continued. "My friend and filmmaker Luke had just arrived in LA from Sydney to shoot some super 8 of us in the studio, but as soon as he arrived, the studio shut down and we all had to leave. We had a few hours before our new flights, so we headed to Venice Beach thinking it'd be a cool, buzzing place to get some shots and turn some film over. I guess having been in the studio bubble for the past week, we hadn't had a reference for this 'pandemic' we kept hearing about. Wandering around an empty Venice Beach was a rough landing for sure. Consider the bubble well and truly burst. And full props to Luke for flying from Sydney to LA and back in the space of two days and not complaining once (at least not to us anyway)."

Maverick Thinker was recorded out in LA (alongside producer Joseph Lorge) at the legendary Sound City Studios right ahead of last year's March lockdown, and put the band behind the glass and treading the same carpet as Nirvana, Johnny Cash, Neil Young, and Fleetwood Mac. A cursory listen to this new record suggests they might well have inhaled the spirit of them all. But to compare them with the greats does the West Country's William The Conqueror a disservice for they sound unlike any of the above. These are slinky, swampy rock 'n roll songs, razor sharp, dripping with the blues and an oft sardonic vocal delivery by Ruarri, the band's songwriter chief and lead vocalist. Written in the English countryside, it's made for sticky basement bar room stages where they dare to come alive with a vision of bigger rooms and broader stages. Taking that zest to tape has lost none of that fervour.

Kalbells - Purplepink.

Kalbells—led by Kalmia Traver (of Rubblebucket) with her bandmates Angelica Bess (Body Language), Zoë Brecher (Hushpuppy, Sad13), and Sarah Pedinotti (Okkervil River, LipTalk)—have announced the release of their sophomore album Max Heart, out March 26 on NNA Tapes.

Max Heart explores what happens when we let go of what doesn’t serve us in order to leave space for the blessings that do. The album’s ten vibrant and subtly layered tracks of mesmerizing psychedelic synth pop (co-engineered with Luke Temple) were birthed from the band’s practice of listening and accountability, rejoicing in their queerness, and promoting each other to be their most genuine selves. Max Heart is a portrait of badass women harnessing their improvisational magic.

A prime example of Kalbells furthering their sum energies is the effervescent funk of lead single “Purplepink,” out today. Co-written between Traver, Bess, and Pedinotti, a hyper synth bass darts around elongated keyboard sighs. Home Counties - Mush - Minor Moon - The Mandevilles

Home Counties - Modern Yuppies.

Home Counties release their new single "Modern Yuppies", the first of two self-produced singles to be released via Alcopop! Records – following hot on the heels of the band’s debut EP ‘Redevelopment’ which arrived in September 2020.

“Modern Yuppies”, premiered earlier today on Matt Wilkinson's Apple Music 1 show, sees the band move away from the indie guitar-laden sound of their debut EP, and instead embrace their playful aptitude for synth-driven, post-funk hooks.

Speaking on the shift in direction, singer Will Harrison commented: "Synths and drum machines were already something we were very keen to explore and 2020 provided us with an unexpected amount of free time to experiment. We dialled the disco influences up to the max and totally embraced that 70’s-cop-drama vibe for this pair of stand-alone singles. It feels like a bold declaration of who we are and it definitely gives a clearer taste of where we’re heading for our next EP”.

Since forming in January 2020, the band have distinguished themselves as a key act to watch, with radio support from Huw Stephens and Jack Saunders (BBC Radio 1), Amy Lame and Tom Robinson (BBC 6 Music) and Matt Wilkinson (Beats 1), along with press support from DIY Magazine, Loud & Quiet, NME, Clash Magazine, So Young Magazine, YUCK, Gigwise and more.

With regards to the single’s lyrical content, Will commented: “The song is a comparison between the young urban professionals of the 1980s to those of today. It discusses the differences, the way that arrogance and conservatism have made way for self-doubt and socially ‘liberal’ political positions. Ultimately however, they are both plagued by the same condition - of constantly needing more.”

“Modern Yuppies” provides an exciting first glimpse of a band evolving beyond their indie roots by combining their aptness for angular guitar work with a more flamboyant sonic vision that somehow sounds eccentrically retro whilst being bizarrely surrealistic.

Mush - Seven Trumpets.

Leeds-based art-rock trio, Mush who are releasing their new single "Seven Trumpets" – it's the latest to be lifted from their new album, Lines Redacted which drops on Feb 12 via Memphis Industries.

Lines Redacted sets a different tone from their 2020 debut, 3D Routine (tipped in Rough Trade's Best Albums of 2020 and at Stereogum, BBC 6, Loud & Quiet, Uncut, Q, Paste, DIY, etc) – the first record was very much a product of its environment – in part sculpted by the band's often fraught live shows with Girl Band, The Lovely Eggs and Stereolab – looking to weigh in on the very real socialist option that was on the table in the UK at the time, this new one is something of the present-day dystopia, documenting the redacted and confusing environment that we now live in. We announced the record in November 2020 with the first single "Blunt Instruments" which had some nice tips at NPR, The Line of Best Fit, Brooklyn Vegan, Alt Citizen, Loud & Quiet, etc – it also bagged the 6 Music playlist and was tipped by Jack Saunders at Radio 1 (tipped the band as his "Next Wave").

Dan Hyndman, the main songwriter of the band, has written the album – dubbed a "Manifesto for Misinformation" – as something of a loose concept record with several protagonists telling different dystopian tales across its 12 tracks. It poses as a sarcastic reflection on the world around us using cynicism as a form of coping mechanism with a razor-sharp. Despite zero opportunity to tour this year, Mush have remained prolific releasing a duo of EPs and now two albums in just under a year with this latest record finding Lee Smith (The Cribs, Pulled Apart By Horses) tackling mixing duties.

Minor Moon - No Lightning Fix.

Minor Moon--the Chicago-based folk rock / alt-country / cosmic Americana group led by multi-instrumentalist Sam Cantor--will release Tethers, their third full length album, on March 26 via Ruination Record Co. & Whatever's Clever.

Tethers came out of a period of upheaval for Cantor, a time where he had to confront uncomfortable personal realities. Following the disorienting dissolution of a long-term relationship, he sought help from regular therapy sessions and the wisdom of close friends and family, and slowly gained some clarity and steady footing. This process led to Cantor constructing a psychedelic and knotty sci-fi world in his lyrics in order to write about what he was going through with more freedom and imagination. "Minor Moon songs have always had this arc of discovery and I've always used them as a way to dive into really personal, philosophical, or emotional problems," says Cantor. "It's about finding some truth looking inward."

"No Lightning Fix," out today, serves as a thesis statement for Tethers, as the song's narrator finds himself lost in a spiritual purgatory with no obvious way out. Accompanied by intricate fingerstyle guitar and warm-hued swells of organ, steel guitar, and backing vocals, the narrator accepts that there is no easy solution to their quandary--"no lightning fix," that is--before the track zig-zags into a Ry Cooder esque choogle and fades away to watery strings. Featuring V.V. Lightbody on backing vocals and Macie Stewart (of Ohmme) on violin, "No Lightning Fix" is an instance of progressive songwriting and layered story-telling with an earthy, alt-country influenced palette of sounds.

Tethers will be released on March 26 on soft red vinyl, limited edition tapes and CDs, and on digital formats.

The Mandevilles - Lightning.

It’s been more than five years since the release of our last record, Windows and Stones. We took our time because we wanted to. Sure, that sounds selfish and a bit self-indulgent, but it’s true. The songs on this record have been in the making for the better part of two years.

We cultivated such an amazing working and personal friendship with our co-producer Neil Morrissey, and his former bandmate Ryan Defoe over the last two years. The writing, recording, and production process has never felt so natural. Neil and Ryan’s style of writing and arrangement was very similar to ours, so it was an instant connection.

This record features a lot of experimentation. We got to stretch our repertoire out and really get to use everyone’s abilities in a way that we haven’t before. The songs really came to life because nobody knew what was about to happen. You’ll hear a difference, but know that everything you hear was thought of, and is there because we wanted it to be.

We’ll be releasing tracks from the album with a still-to-be-determined release date for the rest of the record.
