Reloaded - 06/June/2015 - PJ Harvey's ninth studio album recorded with a studio audience in January is eagerly awaited. Word is that the material is similar in style to the fantastic 'Let England Shake' album, however the lyrics have a more global nature. This featured and probable audience recording (excellent quality) from 2007 is another reminder of how much I simply love her music. Polly Jean has truly earned the respect she has, always surprising, fascinating and always herself.
Some artists can fall into a 'love them' or 'do not love them' category quite comfortably. PJ Harvey has plenty of people who readily claim to love her music. There are probably plenty of music fans that would also say, 'hmmm'.
However I would wage a bet that there are a lot of music lovers out there, who having heard her music wander off thinking 'interesting' and find themselves coming back again and again to hear some more. I am fascinated by PJ Harvey, there is something about some of her songs, that hits home, and yet can I put it in simple terms? Wikipedia lists her genres as - Alternative rock, indie rock, experimental rock, lo-fi, folk rock, electronica, art rock, and punk blues.
Legendary British radio DJ John Peel featured her on a number of occasions in session, on his late night radio programme, sadly he is no longer with us, to perhaps get things in context. Anyhow enough of my personal musical conundrum, this is from the Beacon Theatre show (on Broadway - upper Manhattan New York), and is from her current tour, recorded on the 10th October 2007.
Set List:
01 To bring you my love
02 Send his love to me
03 When under ether
04 The devil
05 White chalk
06 Man-size
07 Angelene/My beautiful leah
08 Nina in ecstasy
09 Electric light
10 Snake
11 Shame
12 Big exit
13 Down by the water
14 Grow grow grow
15 The mountain
16 Silence
17 Rid of me
18 Water
19 The piano
20 The desperate kingdom of love
Sound quality: Very good - the audience audio suggests this is an excellent audience recording, I could be wrong.
We are informed that - Seven-piece, New Orleans rock hybrids The Revivalists announced their upcoming studio offering, Men Amongst Mountains set for release on July 17th 2015 via Wind-up Records. The band, known for their enigmatic live shows, continue to tour across the country this summer, with a slew of upcoming dates and festival appearances, including two album release shows in NYC on July 15th and 16th at Bowery Ballroom and The Music Hall of Williamsburg.
We say The Revivalists are aptly so called, there is a depth to their music that is so rich. Funky and Soulful and yet Alt Rocking, a crazy mixture that simply put, works. More HERE.
MAYE has teamed up with Simon Field on a release, reworking Night Bus by Lucy Rose, resulting in an amazingly warm production with tastes of deep house and indie dance adding a very current feel still honouring the original. Can we tell you more? No, nothing like a little minimalism, that's all they told us, so that's enough. Excellent track though.
Their bio tells us - San Francisco based blues/indie rock trio Fritz Montana formed in early 2013 with the goal to create music that keeps your feet dancing and your head banging. Growing up as products of the Bay Area’s suburbs, three ambitious and passionate young men met on a whim and haven’t looked back since. With their minds set on proving that rock and roll isn’t dead.
All I will say is this band are natural blues rockers, engaging from the first riff, rock and roll has another pair of safe hands to bang your heads to.
The story goes - It’s not often you come across an artist that truly grabs you and takes hold. Emerging from the chaos of New York, Julietta shines through as a dramatic and heartfelt siren, like a warrior suited for battle. It's no wonder her music is able to tell such a captivating story; lyrics seamlessly turn to visuals as her voice articulates the narrative. A universally relative theme of love and loss is a huge part of Julietta’s context, and is something she wears on her sleeve.
As I read the above words I wondered which direction this song would follow. Well in fairness, I was happily surprised, if you set the bar high you have a long way to fall, this one just soared away leaving some 'Goosebumps' as promised.
Finally we are informed - Brisbane 4-piece rock outfit The Bacchanales have been very busy for the past year, growing a dedicated fan base on the streets of Brisbane with their heavy and groove-laden 90-style rock. Since the release of their debut EP in 2014 they have been lucky enough to play with Holy Holy, Bad Dreems, Harts and The Belligerents, and now they are ready to release the first single 'Sandcastles' from their forthcoming sophomore EP.
What a band! The single is an edit from a nine minute track on the E.P. and it is gorgeous. It has been available for a week or so. I'm to old to get excited about forthcoming releases, what is this band trying to do to me, excitement at my age!
Closet Straights we are told are - a young, scrappy team of talented multi-instrumentalists from Melbourne, Australia. The quintet were born out of troubadour front man Alex Lashlie's desire to have his ethereal compositions fleshed out for a live environment. Individually, each member of Closet Straights brings their own inspirations and inclinations that reach from the far out regions of jangle-pop to the vast plains of true-country ramblers. As a unit however, these differences cum together to create a melting pot of true fusion.
They first worked together in late 2013 and have now arrived at a point where their music has been described as 'heavy pop'. Well heavy, jangly, or whatever else, their recent single release 'Zadie' is a fine song to kick off this edition. It has that ethereal feel around it, I like the word ethereal, so only award it when justified, yep - ethereal heavy pop will do nicely. Bandcamp HERE.
So what do we know about Bunnygrunt? Well first of all we know that whoever wrote their promo has a superb way with words, we read - They started off twee but spent so much time on the road that they learned how to rock. The missing link between Teenage Fanclub and Teenage Wasteland, like a bat out of hell baby, Bunnygrunt was born to run. They’ve been tearing it up for years now—legends of the underground teaching the indie kids how to rock and the rockers how to weep. Fueled by the kindest dog in St. Louis, the immortal Rusty, Bunnygrunt’s spent their lives stuck in the middle of a nowhere that used to be a somewhere (the gateway to the west that’s now seen as a hateway to the rest), and you can hear it in every note of their beer-soaked, hopefully desperate and hopelessly hopeful, music. And just like the union men who built the schools and the fire stations of St. Louis all those years ago, Bunnygrunt does their work and moves on. No glory necessary, no need to thank them.
What can we add to that, other than listen, no even better, turn in up unsociably loud and share with your neighbours. Bunnygrunt Volume 4 is released July 17th 2015 and it's a corker!
Fox And Fowl are a Brisbane based indie pop trio. They have a really catchy song 'Spark' that we are able to share, one with a little storyline as follows - A song with a surprising meaning, singer and keyboard player Lachlan explains that 'Spark' is based on the worldwide uproar surrounding Brazil's preparation prior to hosting the FIFA World Cup last year. "We wanted to highlight the fact that the Brazilian government and FIFA were spending millions of dollars on Cup, while millions of Brazilians were living below the poverty line and struggling with their every day life. The country was "just a spark away" from igniting in uproar and riots," he says.
'Spark' is the next step in an exciting new direction for Fox & Fowl with politically charged undercurrents and a fresh new sound emanating from the trio. Whatever the story this song hooked me in straight away, so enjoy!
The band have some live dates:
Friday June 5 | Brighton Up Bar, Sydney - w/Polish Club and Special Guests
Saturday June 6 | Grace Darling Hotel, Melbourne - w/The Sand Dollars, DIET. and Louis Spoils
Saturday June 27 | Black Bear Lodge, Brisbane - FREE SHOW w/Denpasar.
Sometimes just the background to a band that we receive sets the tone and expectation very high, so when I read the following about The Cheap Thrills, I was hoping for something exciting.
The Cheap Thrills' release their new single 'Rusty' on July 13th, encapsulating the band's energy and youth with an added Psych/Pop vibe. Aged just eighteen and nineteen, the band have already headlined 02 Academy shows, have been selected as winners of the coveted Liverpool Sound City Youth Award 2012 and played the Calling Out stage of Kendal Calling in the same year. Since then, The Cheap Thrills have played successful gigs in London, as well as supporting Cast, The Rifles, The Moons, The Jezabels, Wave Machines, Skaters and Superfood. Regulars on BBC Introducing Merseyside, the band have also been featured in The Guardian's 'Breaking Bands Column'.
No anti-climax with this band, the featured song has a level of maturity that surprises, they have that 'natural energy level' that carries on after the song has ended.
We have been hearing quite a lot about Sasha McVeigh this year and share the excitement around her album release 'I Stand Alone' due out imminently on June 8th. Just some of the notable points regarding Sasha are:
· Tipped as one to watch by Taste of Country. UK country singer who has been embraced by the US country scene. · Performing alongside some of the biggest names on the circuit in America (inc. Tim McGraw, Blake Shelton and Keith Urban) · Recently played to a packed crowd at C2C at the O2. Sold out main stage performance at Hay Festival, screened by BBC Worldwide. · Chosen as Best of the Best by Mark Forrest & BBC Introducing. · Been booked for six main stage slots at country music festivals this summer in the US. · Opened the ACM awards kick-off concert in Las Vegas with Hunter Hayes. · Announced by anti-bullying designers Amour Propre as their new ambassador.
Not bad eh? so enjoy the video for 'Someone To Break My Heart' if the video appeals, the album's a must!
There has been some real 'buzz' around May, who is based in Melbourne, Australia. Yesterday was the release day of her new single 'I Could Have Been Someone' (written by May), her second release for 2015.
The press release quite rightly describes May's singing and musical accompaniment - With orchestral blends of contemporary soul and dark pop, May pairs hauntingly beautiful melodies with evocative vocals to create a distinct and powerful sound.
This is one of those songs that casts it's shadow across a range of musical styles and genres and yet flows along with grace and beauty. You can gather from that, I like it. It's on iTunes HERE.
Reloaded 02/June/2015 - This is another recording, that from what I can work out seems to have been circulated in different forms for many years. Since we originally ran this feature I came across some additional material with two extra songs, so I have added that version as well, as part two below. In addition to the original comments below, other sources have stated that this was very much a Bob Dylan session and George Harrison was an invited support player. Before the days of The Travelling Wilburys perhaps the various egos still jostled for superiority. Whatever the case it makes for a good listen. Bob Dylan and George Harrison are remembered for working together in The Traveling Wilburys in the late 1980's, and of course, Bob Dylan's guest appearance at George's 'Concert For Bangladesh' in 1971.
This session is from May 1970, when both artists were busy on solo projects.
Indeed Bob Dylan released two albums in 1970, 'Self Portrait' and 'New Morning', the latter proving far more popular with his critics.
George Harrison was of course working on 'All Things Must Pass' his legendary 'triple' album.
Bob Dylan co-wrote 'I'd Have You Anytime' with George Harrison, which appeared as the opening track on 'All Things Must Pass' (which also included a cover of Dylan's 'If Not For You').
These sessions may well have prompted or been a part of those developments, whatever the case, it is clear as you listen, that they were very comfortable with each other, and enjoying themselves.
This then is Bob Dylan and George Harrison's Studio Sessions at Columbia Studios B, New York, NY, on the 1st May 1970.

Reloaded 01/June/2015 - When I was much, much younger, I remember being asked on a number of occasions, who my favourite Beatle was? The years pass by and I guess the same question goes around with the latest charting boy bands today, probably the age group asking is much younger and the lifespan of the bands are possibly shorter. The reality was I never had a favourite, I just wished they had stayed together longer, there had to be a couple of more exceptional albums in them at least, surely? However my opinion is that John Lennon bared his soul and his grievances far more than any other member and that lead to some stunning solo material. Hearing again how they were formed into songs remains fascinating for me, by the number of visits this recording gets on Beehive Candy, I am clearly not alone. As you probably know, The Beatles and their component parts, are probably the most bootlegged band in the world.
One constant theme seems to be 'alternative' album versions and this is no exception.
There are in circulation, alternative versions of John Lennon's 'Mind Games' and 'Shaved Fish' this copy is an amalgamation of some of the first and most of the second.
This version originates from Auckland, New Zealand, of all places, on 'Apple Ghost' Records, and appeared as a bootleg CD back in 1991.
It is a real mixture of songs in development and from different mixes and sources.
Track listing is as follows:
Mind Games
1. Mind Games (rough vocal - early mix).
2. Tight A$ (guitar & vocals demo)
3. Aisumasen (I'm Sorry) - (rough mix)
4. Bring On The Lucie (alternative mix)
5. Out Of The Blue (rough mix & alternative vocal)
6. Only People (rough mix)
Shaved Fish
7. Give Peace A Chance (acoustic demo)
8. Cold Turkey (alternative vocals - early mix from an acetate)
9. Instant Karma (film clip version - double tracked vocals)
10. Power To The People (alternative version)
11. Mother (live one to one concert - matinee show - different version to album)
12. Woman Is The Nigger Of The World (acoustic demo)
13. Imagine (live one to one concert - matinee show - different version to album)
14. Whatever Gets You Through The Night (alternative version)
15. Mind Games (Make Love Not War) - (early prototype version)
16. #9 Dream (acoustic demo)
17. Happy Xmas War is Over (acoustic demo version)
18. Give Peace A Chance ( live one to one concert - full version featuring guest vocalists Stevie Wonder and Melanie Safka).
Sound quality is extremely good (many stereo mixes - and close to original source)

Nite School Klik - the new single from DJ Shadow's recently revealed duo with G Jones- Nite School Klik. Off their upcoming self-titled EP out June 9. Never had a nice nightmare, this may well be the musical antidote.
Chris Savor is a singer and producer from UK, roaming NYC creating soulful electronic music. He has some great tracks coming up with Honey Butter and spctra in the next few weeks. Intrigued and drawn in, the vocals are out there and somehow captivating.
Minotawr has been stretching audio boundaries for some time. When your ears are weary of the safe side of music, when you are struggling to find a real alternative Minotawr offers you a challenging escape. Website HERE. New album just released.
Chicago-based bass producer Stratus has just unleashed “The Collider,” a fiery big room/progressive house tour de force that marks his second single of 2015. It's almost symphonic at times and quirky in a nice way at others. Dare I mention 'prog rock' as well, probably not but there you go, stunning!
Sarah Neufeld has a strong solo career developing alongside her familiar touring with Arcade Fire. Her violin orientated solo work looks set to expand further with this exciting and intriguing song from her forthcoming album (no release date set as yet). The track 'We've Got A Lot' features Sarah Neufeld on violin and vocals along with Jeremy Gara on drums, Colin Stetson on lyricon, and Hans Bernhard on bass. If you want to much information then it was recorded by Hans Bernhard and Corwin Fox, mixed by Mark Lawson and Hans Bernhard, and mastered by Harris Newman. Sarah is touring still with a few more dates to go, on her website HERE. Well this is a welcome development and if the plan was to fill us with expectation, it has worked!
Meridian Lights are new to us and we are mightily impressed. Some background - Meridian Lights is Bradley Valentin and Yohimbe Sampson. They grew up creating and performing music in their homes with their families in their Bed-Stuy neighbourhood as a part of celebrating the greatest moments of life, maintaining optimism during its trials and music of course, served as an outlet for their own self expression. Yohimbe is a self-taught guitarist since a teen in popular Brooklyn rap-rock fusion band Game Rebellion. A neighbourhood party that turned into a jam session where Yohimbe grabbed a guitar and nobody dared to sing led Brad to step in, and they have not stopped playing together since. Bradley; writing since a pre-teen, writes everything from short stories to poetry. He began singing in his mother’s church choir around the same time. “At home I was introduced to many different genres and I always paid attention to the vocalist and their performance,” says Bradley. Their new ep “Meridian Lights” fuses soul, world and electronica into an indie pop song set that touches on trial, optimism, love and some baby-making rhythms.
They have some live dates lined up as follows:
06/19-06/21 - Tonasket, WA - Culture Consciousness Festival
06/22 - Olympia, WA - Deadbeat Records
06/23 - Seattle, WA - The Funhouse @ El Corazon
06/24 - Seattle, WA - Seamonster
06/26 - Bellingham, WA - Cabin Tavern
We are pleased to preview the music on Beehive Candy, however get behind this incredible duo if you like what you here, this is wonderfully crafted music and a delight to listen to!
And the excellent music just keeps on coming (budding DJ or what?)...
This time in the form of Suris. and we have lots of background info to share with you - Suris release their debut album ‘Leap’ this July/August with it’s first single ‘Riverman’ in June. Members, Lindsey and Dave Mackie have written, recorded and produced this song collection with additional help from Samantha Rowe (Jon Lord, Emmylou Harris and Alex Banks) and David Ord. Also included is a cover of Jimmy Webb’s ‘Do what you Gotta Do’. Lead by Lindsey’s arresting voice, the songs are more dynamic, memorable and richly textured than her 2012 solo album ‘Plaques & Tangles’, yet seductive and at times unsettling landscapes still dominate.
Fiercely independent, this Buckinghamshire based couple met while playing in different punk bands. They bring various touch points from the 70s and 80s to blend intricate guitar and piano textures with sweeping orchestration. No samples here, if whale song or crows are needed Lindsey records them herself . The Mackie’s musical collaboration began during their early marriage, they met whilst at the University of East Anglia. Starting as a recording adventure with only a four track cassette recorder, they created a sound which caught the attention of both Nigel Grainge at Ensign Records and most notably from David Munns at Polygram, but ultimately it was Lindsey’s voice that garnered the most interest, and she went on to win a Sky TV talent contest as a solo singer. Just as the industry was beginning to take notice, the untimely death of her manager meant she lost her chief hustler and to further complicate the mix, she became pregnant. Two children later, the Mackies remain doggedly self-sufficient, instinctive and passionately committed to the song. They finish off each other’s musical sentences, are multi- instrumentalists and, with a family and real life to skim off affectations , there’s little time or interest in ego.
Lindsey’s song-writing is intelligent, emotional and distinctive. Her performances range from the restrained cool of Absolute Zero to the uninhibited, underwater yowling of Scaur Bank. With Dave’s production skills Suris create, in their own space and time, a unique and enduring sound.
Check out just how good Suris are with the video below, this is a fabulous album with many strong songs, if you like 'Riverman' you will have to get the album when it's released!
Tape Runs Out next, and a couple of impressive songs 'Friends' and 'Flowers'. Here's what the promo had to say - Tape Runs Out unashamedly display their edgy, refreshing pop-mindedness in these two tracks, with a potent elixir of guitars, hooks and the familiar soft hush of early 90s male vocals. This release includes the hallmark “Friends”, a layered jangle anthem sure to inspire dreaming and gazing, and the stand-out track “Flowers” is reminiscent of ‘Rock Action’ era Mogwai on ecstasy with a remarkable Cure-laced cool-down effect. One of the most exciting bands to come out of Cambridge in recent times, Tape Runs Out have being enthralling audiences around England for the past two years. Variously described as indie, shoegaze, dream pop and electronica, they have carved out their own sound by blending cleverly crafted melodies, melancholic ambience and dreamy reverb-tinged rhythms. Headed by Liam Goodrum-Bell, Tape Runs Out's music is infectious with a modern and unique twist, defying stereotypical trends with songs for those who love to absorb the music, as well as for the most intricate and scrupulous music lovers.
The single is released on Ear to Ear Records (HERE), and in our ever humble and unassuming way, we simply say if you like anything folk pop come shoegaze with hooks that can really hook you then Tape Runs Out may well delight your fine ears!
Freedom Fry we are reliably informed, is the combination of French songstress Marie Seyrat and Michigan-born musical chameleon Bruce Driscoll (also of Blondfire). The song we feature here has a pretty unique thing or two about it as Freedom Fry explain - “21” was recorded with the help of the audiences we had during the first three nights of our residency at The Echo in LA. The first night they provided the hand claps, the next the group vocals, and for the grand finale they gave us the most stretched out scream we’ve ever heard. “21” is about feeling high on all the possibilities of a life that lies ahead. It’s about celebrating the time we're alive. - Bruce & Marie
All Beehive Candy will add is just how old we are getting but hey! lets not get in the way of these annoyingly young people enjoying themselves... Actually it's a catchy, hooking song that will get inside your head, don't say we didn't warn you!
Finally in this round up it's a case of "last but most definitely not least". Poema have released the new single 'Forget You in LA' and we are finding it massively addictive!
There's more to come as the promo tells us - Poema's new EP, Pretty Speeches, will be independently released on Friday, July 10. This EP marks the first project from the sister duo since parting with Tooth & Nail Records in early 2014. The EP showcases a new direction for Poema which sees Elle & Shealeen Puckett experimenting with pop grooves and laid back guitar. "For this collection of songs we gave ourselves complete freedom. No boundaries, no time limits, and nothing to distract ourselves from pulling out the best material we could," reflects Poema's Elle Puckett. Recorded in the duo's adopted town of Nashville with producer Nolan Rossi, Pretty Speeches, is Poema's first release as an independent group.
So enjoy Poema's single as we start the countdown for July 10th with eager anticipation. Keep up to date with them on their website HERE. Failure to acquire 'Pretty Speeches' will render you uncool, you have been notified...
Reloaded 29/May/2015 - another Beehive Candy favourite for so many reasons. The historical aspect speaks for itself, however musically it just makes me wonder what would have happened if Decca had signed them that day. Would the musical styling have altered and would Pete Best have remained on drums for example. All hypothetical I know however perhaps Decca's loss was everyone else's gain as things turned out. It all seems a long time ago now.
The Decca audition is the name given to the now-famous audition by The Beatles for Decca Records at their Decca Studios in West Hampstead, London, England, before they reached international stardom. Decca's decision to reject the group is considered to be one of the biggest mistakes in music history.
Manager Brian Epstein made numerous trips to London to visit record companies with the hope of securing a record contract, but was rejected by many, including Columbia, Pye, Philips, and Oriole.
The Beatles were driven down to London by Neil Aspinall on New Year's Eve in 1961, for a Decca audition, but Aspinall lost his way, and the trip took ten hours. They arrived at 10 o'clock at night, and John Lennon said that they arrived "just in time to see the drunks jumping in the Trafalgar Square fountain." On 1 January 1962, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Pete Best were auditioned by Decca producer Tony Meehan (ex-drummer of the Shadows) performing a total of fifteen songs in just under one hour. All the material was selected by Epstein, who decided on a selection of covers that the band had performed in various clubs over the years, interspersed with three Lennon/McCartney originals. The Beatles later found out that Epstein had paid Meehan to produce the studio recordings.
Eventually, Decca Records rejected The Beatles, saying that "guitar groups are on the way out", although it has since been suggested that their work that day did not yet reflect their true potential, and the "guitar" comment may have been intended as a polite let down. Decca instead chose The Tremeloes, who auditioned the same day as The Beatles, were local and would require lower travel expenses.
The Beatles went on to sign with EMI subsidiary Parlophone, after their 'comedy album' producer George Martin heard the Decca demos and decided to meet the band. In 2007, Dr. Ebbetts Sound Systems released a CD version of The Decca Audition.

Comments: I have sourced a reasonable amount of the information regarding this recording from Wikipedia, and although these recordings have been in circulation for decades, with some 'semi official' releases of the material often minus the Lennon/McCartney material, this is by far the best audio copy of the sessions I have heard, and is complete.
Some of the sessions were also released as a series of bootleg 'promo' singles on coloured vinyl back in 1976, along with full colour picture sleeves on 'Deccagone records'.
Reloaded - 29/May/2015 - download link in comments.
The story goes thus for Harts - laying all the instruments, writing all the songs and even recording and producing everything single handedly, the Aussie "one-man music making machine", virtuoso guitarist, songwriter & producer, Darren Hart has been hard at work recording and producing a brand new EP, titled 'Breakthrough'. He's touring Australia & New Zealand in June & July, listen to the featured track below and go buy some tickets - exceptional 70's rock is now in safe young hands & funk has won a reprieve, marvellous music!
The low down for Ambassadeurs - 'Breathe' (feat. Folly Rae) is the next track to be unveiled from ‘Patterns’, the debut album from the much-championed UK electronica artist, Ambassadeurs (aka Mark Dobson). The 12 track release will be available to download from 29 June on his own Lost Tribe Records imprint, preceded by a Spotify ‘First Listen’ from 1 June. ‘Looking At You’ will be released as a single on 10 July. Electronica seems to mean different things to different folk however from what we receive at Beehive Candy, I think it fair to say it's a crowded market. So to say Ambassadeurs is a stand out act hopefully emphasises just how impressed we are with this music.
We have been informed that 'Aussie folk pop singer/songwriter Meg Sampson is stoked to be doing what she does'. Now listen up Australia! You keep sending us great music and that's fine, but don't start getting clever and using your own slang, otherwise it will be 'up the apple and pears to Bedfordshire' for all our Cockney fans and then what? OK for us sensitive people from the other side of the planet 'stoked' I am informed means 'to be quite happy with'. Now everyone calm down there is no need to get cranky or crook. As regards Meg Sampson, she is heaps stella! Music please...
Whilst we allow Australia to ride rampantly here on 'Quality Not Quantity' we might as well address Mia Milan who has been crafting her skills in Europe as the following confirms - Australian Pop artist Mia Milan: if you haven’t heard of her- you soon will! She’s been singing, recording & writing all throughout Europe for the last few years defining her unique pop style! What hits you about her music is her solid nod to retro, her ‘young girl out in the world’ lyrics and her powerful pop sound. Mia Milan is well on her way to setting her own benchmark of cool on the global pop scene and wraps it all up with her pop star quality of the new generation.
Reality is, we all come from Earth, it's a messed up place, however sometimes a breath of musical
'fresh air' does us all good and fine old 'pop' music is often just the remedy! This is a worthy example of the finest of pop with a quirky lilt, enjoy.
Finally a few words about Turtle - Glaswegian producer and songwriter Jon Cooper aka Turtle is excited to share a brand new video for his single 'The Floor', taken from his second EP 'Colours' - out now on Beatnik Creative. ‘The Floor’ opens the five track EP in style, introducing Turtle’s distinctive vocals over alluring guitar hooks and rising, dreamlike synths. Constantly building, emerging beats propel the track to a motorik climax with Cooper’s vocals enveloping within blissful sounds and rhythm.
It's a fine piece of music to say the least, so we are more than happy to share the video. The audio tracks follow, give the guy your support, this is an excellent E.P.
Reloaded 27/May/2015 - I wanted to feature this set of sessions recorded for BBC radio again for a couple of reasons. Firstly because it is so easy to forget the impact on pop, rock, blues and other genres, Jeff Beck had back then. He was respected by his counterparts and was not afraid to push the boundaries. Secondly Jeff Beck was a driving force for many other artists, witnessed by those around him on these sessions alone. It's all a long time ago now, but recognition for Jeff's musical legacy should I think be acknowledged.
This is a selection of recordings from The Jeff Beck Group, which were recorded as sessions for the BBC (Radio One), from 1967 to 1971. This is not the complete set of songs performed by the band for the BBC, however it does represent a very good flavour of the material the band were performing live at that time.
The audio quality of tracks one to nine are notably better quality than track ten to seventeen however the latter tracks include some classic material, along with off air comments and introduction from DJ John Peel. I have separated the material into two files along the above lines.
There were two versions of the Jeff Beck Group the first existing from 1966 through to 1969, and the latter group (with different musician line up) from 1970 to 1972. With the exception of two songs (which were probably from a longer 'in concert' performance) this material is from the original band line up.

Comments:
One of the reasons that bands were invited to perform sessions for the BBC during the 1960's and 1970's was due to the restricted 'needle time' that existed in the UK at the time. By undertaking 'live sessions' it enabled the BBC to provide more popular music performances, and get around the rediculous limitations placed on them by the 'Performance Rights' authorities. These crazy restrictions were also in part the reason that Offshore 'pirate' Radio took off in the 1960's and 70's. The legacy however has ironically given us high quality live performance recordings of bands from The Beatles through to The Yardbirds.

Reloaded 26/May/2015 - Another very popular rarity that remains searched after regularly amongst collectors of Rolling Stones material. This recording was seeded close to the original 'release' and the audio reflects that and is very clean and highly enjoyable. It remains a must have for anyone who remembers the raw energy the Stones had, that set them apart from so many right from the start.
Beat Beat Beat at the Beeb is probably the most comprehensive selection of The Rolling Stones BBC Sessions from 1963 to 1965 although many other bootleg compilations have surfaced, including 'Get Satisfaction If You Want' and 'Crackin Up'.
There is a question mark over the absolute accuracy of the dates of shows or recordings however Beat Beat Beat has a reputation for being well researched so are probably pretty accurate.
The cover art displayed is apparently from a rare 10inch German album version. As regards the actual performances themselves, then this is wonderful material, showing off a highly energetic and youthful band, that in the interview ponder whether they have a few more years in them, if only they had known.

We are advised that - Scenic Voidis a music project based out of Chicago, IL intent on releasing its debut EP in May of 2015. Fronted by eclectic and multi-talented musician, Patrick Jennings, he is presenting a thrilling sound with subtle intricacy; a meticulously crafted, emotionally driven dream rock EP. The Scenic Void EP was made available May 5th via Dancing Berries Music and will be playing shows around the Chicago area in support of the new release.
We say - It's a goody! Nice vibe, fine songs and some excellent guitar work.
Dark and dreamy duo Ultra Violent Rays will digitally release their next single, "Wish," on May 26. The duo of Cooper Gillespie (vocals and bass) and Greg Gordon (drums and sequences) create a fresh and layered sound that does have a strong hint of 'Siouxsie Sioux' in her more ethereal vocal renditions (our words - getting a bit creative here). Others have also mentioned Joy Division and Portishead as references, however we reckon Ultra Violent Rays have enough of their own talent going and are definitely worth your ears.
First the pedigree - Atlanta born and Brooklyn fancy singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Sarah Kervin is internationally recognised as a soloist, guest artist, composer, and band leader by Downbeat Student Music Awards, the Jazz Education Network Composition Award, and research grants in vocal pedagogy from the Magellan Program. She has performed with great artists such as Jon Hendricks, the Manhattan Transfer, Ben Folds, the Fort Worth Symphony, and Afro Blue.
We can add that Sarah is excited to begin a new partnership with the Joyful Heart Foundation to advocate for domestic violence awareness. More about 'JHF' HERE. The new album 'Into the City' is out in June 2015 with proceeds to benefit the foundation, and we at Beehive Candy think it will do very well as the whole album is just so good! Available from CD Baby HERE, and itunes.
From Australia we are told artist - KITis a mixture of Adele and Aretha Franklin in a soul infused fire of honest pop. Originally from Bega from country New South Wales, she displays great strength and confidence on stage whilst showcasing her passionate, vibrant personality. Having played well over 600 live shows, she is ready to release her debut single. KIT’s featured single Goodbye showcases her ability to demonstrate a strong soul vocal performance when accompanied by contemporary instrumentation.
We say pay attention world, another fine talent that stands out from the massive musical crowd!
“Goodbye” by KIT will be released 12th June 2015.
Reloaded 24/May/2015 By popular request and a firm favourite for Rolling Stones rarities collectors, however we would like to point out that CD1 and 2 are within the official King Biscuit archives and will be deleted from this site once we have given a little time for the Stones completest fans who have requested this famous bootleg. Full artwork of the original packaging is included. This is a four CD box set bootleg of The Rolling Stones that was circulated originally on The Swingin' Pig label (TSP-CD-200) and in 1998 on the Dandelion label as part of their 'The Classic Rolling Stones Collection' (DL030 - DL033). The first two CD's include the entire Forth Worth show (which is also in the King Biscuit archives). CD's 3 and 4 have pretty much every song broadcast from the 1978 tour plus a few soundboard recordings that never made it to air. This version is sourced from the 'Dandelion' label boxed set and the audio quality is so good, it is of little surprise that mainstream bootleggers cashed in on the material (we of course do not!).
The Rolling Stones' US Tour 1978 took place during June and July 1978, immediately following the release of the group's 1978 album Some Girls (hence the bootlegs 'Handsome Girls' title). Like the 1972 and 1975 U.S.A. tours, Bill Graham was the tour promoter. One opening act was Peter Tosh, who was sometimes joined by Jagger for their duet "Don't Look Back". The tour used a stripped back, minimal stage show compared to the previous Tour of the Americas '75 and Tour of Europe '76, possibly due to the emergence of the punk rock scene and its emphasis solely on music and attitude rather than presenting a grandiose stage extravaganza.
From Wikipedia - The tour is widely believed among fans to be one of the band's greatest, largely because it was in many ways back to basics both in musical and visual terms. It meant a return to a mixture of classic Stones numbers ("Tumbling Dice," "Star Star," "Happy," "Street Fighting Man", etc.) mixed with blues numbers and Chuck Berry covers, as well as including a large number of songs from then newly released Some Girls LP. It was the first tour featuring songs written with Ron Wood as an official member of the Rolling Stones, and his contributions from this period are considered by many Stones fans as some of his greatest with the band. While no live album was released from this tour, a fair amount of bootleg releases showcases its musical qualities, most notably the multi-show King Biscuit Flower Hour FM recording mostly known as "Handsome Girls."
Guest artists that played with the Stones during individual shows included Linda Ronstadt, Sugar Blue, Doug Kershaw, Bobby Keys and Nicky Hopkins. Other opening Acts included Van Halen, Journey, Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes and the Doobie Brothers.

Reloaded 23/May/2015 - Beehive Candy may at times feel, less a labour of love and more a chore, when it comes to replacing our many lost files. However when we are reminded of fantastic performances such as this one and the musical diversity it adds to this site, it does make the whole replacement thing, seem a far more worthwhile project.
A fine and funky concert complete with the full power house of rhythm is captured here on this recording of Tower Of Power and fit for 'Bumpsters' everywhere!
Recorded with an appreciative audience at Ultrasonic Studios Hempstead, NY, USA back on May 14th, 1974 this is a superb example of the band who continue to impress and perform today.
Some background from Wikipedia here that covers up to the time of this concert - The roots of the band go back to the summer of 1968, when tenor saxophonist/vocalist Emilio Castillo met Stephen "Doc" Kupka, who played baritone sax. Castillo had played in several bands, but it was Castillo's father, who told his son to "hire that guy" after a home audition. Together, they would become the backbone of Tower of Power. Within months, the group, known as the Motowns at the time, would begin playing various "gigs" around Oakland and Berkeley, their soul sound relating to both minority and rebellious listeners. By 1970, the now renamed Tower of Power (including trumpet/arranger Greg Adams, first trumpet Mic Gillette, first saxophone Skip Mesquite, Francis "Rocco" Prestia on bass, Willie Fulton on guitar, and drummer David Garibaldi) signed a recording contract with Bill Graham's San Francisco Records and released their first album, East Bay Grease. Rufus Miller performed most of the lead vocals on this debut album which included the single Sparkling In The Sand, which received airplay on famed Bay Area soul station KDIA.
Augmented by percussionist/conga/bongo player Brent Byars, guitarist Bruce Conte and keyboardist Chester Thompson, Tower of Power moved to Warner Bros. Records. With Rick Stevens now singing lead, 1972's Bump City would give the band its first national exposure. This album included "You're Still a Young Man", which peaked at number 29 on the Billboard Hot 100. Emilio Castillo, who co-wrote and sang lead on "You're Still a Young Man," told Songfacts that the song was based on a true story concerning a former girlfriend who was six years older than him. Though not released as a single, "Down to the Nightclub" received heavy airplay on West Coast FM stations and several AM stations. Both songs still get substantial airplay on oldies radio and remain fan favorites.
Tower of Power, released in the spring of 1973, the third album for the band, now featured Lenny Williams on lead vocals and Lenny Pickett on first saxophone. This was the group's most successful album. It peaked at number 15 on the Billboard Pop Albums chart and was RIAA certified as a gold record (for sales in excess of 500,000 copies). The album also spawned their most-successful single "So Very Hard To Go". Although the single peaked at number 17 on the Billboard Hot 100, it landed in the Top 10 on the surveys of many West Coast Top 40 radio stations, hitting number 1 on many of them. The album also charted two other singles on the Billboard Hot 100, "This Time It's Real" and "What Is Hip?" The latter is possibly their most enduring song.
1974's Back to Oakland spawned another hit, "Don't Change Horses (in the Middle of a Stream)", that reached number 26 on the Billboard Hot 100, plus "Time Will Tell", which charted at number 69.
