Toots and The Maytals - New York 1979.

Image
This is Toots and The Maytals live in New York back in 1979. This would have been the latter part of their set on the night, as at this time they would normally play around a dozen songs and usually include a few hits such as Monkey Man, Pressure Drop and the like. There is some dispute as to the venue, The Bottom Line Club has been cited elsewhere however there is no record of them performing at the club that year in the archives, however WNEW would regularly cover live performances at that time from the venue. Any how despite the lack of facts this is one fine recording to enjoy. Toots and the Maytals' compositions would be given a second airing in 1978-80 during the reggae punk and ska revival period in the UK, when The Specials included "Monkey Man" on their 1979 debut album and The Clash covered "Pressure Drop". They were also included in the lyrics to Bob Marley & The Wailers song, "Punky Reggae Party" - "The Wailers will be there,

Background: Fuel Box is a Soul/Dub/Blues/Hop-act from the Netherlands that delivers raw, psychedelic but melodic beat songs. Kind of a mixture between Madlib, The Black Keys, Wu Tang Clan, Bill Withers, Lee Perry and Prince. They generate a sound that is best described as if a 60's Soul singer and a latter day hip-hop producer cut an album together in 70's Jamaica. It all started out with singer Remy Britsemmer and producer Josh Boon but today it's a fully operating and functioning live-band. Now they released a Free EP, called "The Pre-EP". It's the preview for the complete album "1" coming out this fall, 2011. "It rarely ever happens that you like a demo this much from the start. But apparently, once in a while there's an act that combines exactly the right amount of passion, technique and musicality that touches you. This duo, consisting of singer Remy Britsemmer and producer Joshua Boon, makes a mixture of hiphop, soul, funk, pop

Lene Lovich - Malibu 1983

Image
This is Lene Lovich live in Malibu back in 1983. Lene Lovich was born Lili-Marlene Premilovich in Detroit, Michigan, to an English mother and a Serbian father. After her father had health problems, her mother took her and her three siblings to live in Hull, England. Lovich was 13 years old at the time. She met the guitarist/songwriter Les Chappell when they were teenagers, and he became her longtime collaborator and life partner. In autumn 1968, they went to London, England to attend art school. It was there that Lovich first tied her hair into the plaits that later became a visual trademark, though at first she did it to keep her hair out of the clay when studying sculpture. In 1975, Lovich joined The Diversions, a funk group that put out five singles and an album on Polydor Records without success. In 1976 she released a 7" 3-track "maxi-single" in the UK under her own name, aimed at the Christmas market: "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus/The Christmas Song (M

It really was the gig of a lifetime and created a scene never before witnessed in Camden. It was also the first year we added the Roundhouse as venue and started to pull in some serious ‘headliners’. 2011Candy - May Edition One

Image
Background: Golden Glow is the charming solo project of Manchester singer/songwriter Pierre Hall. Son of a British father from Trinidad and Tobago, and a Mauritian mother, Pierre's early years were spent near Liverpool before moving to Manchester at 18 for university. Although he had already dabbled in poetry and guitar, it was in Manchester that music became the central focus of his life. Not long after befriending the creative promotion team Akoustik Anarkhy, Pierre began his own weekly club night Friends Of Mine and threw a series of raucous house parties that lead UK Nightlife guide City Life to say "if Manchester music really is going though a golden age of partying and cool DIY indie club nights, then Pierre Hall is unquestionably the city's chief party organiser." It was during this same fertile period that he fronted the short-lived but much-loved Brit-Pop band Lead Balloons. In October 2009, just as Lead Balloons were ending their time together, Pierre was

Kate & Anna McGarrigle - Germany 1977

Image
This is Kate & Anna McGarrigle performing live with a sizable studio audience in Cologne, Germany for WDR (TV) in Studio 'L' back on the 3rd February 1977. As was so often the case when the McGarrigle sisters performed the atmosphere was informal and homely, the singing and musicianship counted for everything as is demonstrated in this recording where the monitors were failing and the band rightly demanded better. That said with difficulty hearing themselves in the mix the actual performance was both stunning and moving. In 1975 the sisters made their first LP, Kate and Anna McGarrigle (Warner BS-2862) , which brought them critical notice and concert engagements internationally. After their London debut 25 Jul 1976 at Victoria Palace, Michael Watts in Melody Maker (31 Jul 1976) called their music 'a holy marriage of strong sentiment and brilliant, pure singing ... Anna's, lilting and airy, Kate's, deeper and fiercer - these are amongst the very best voice
